More than two decades have passed since The World Atlas of Wine made its first appearance. During that time the book that the French supreme wine authority, the Institute National des Appellations d'Origine (INAO), called "a major landmark in the literature of wine" has been hailed by critics all over the world as "extraordinary" and "irreplaceable." Translated into a dozen languages, it has been bought by more than two million people, and commands an unrivaled position as the definitive work for wine lovers, connoisseurs, and professionals alike. The fourth edition of this undisputed classic has been completely revised and updated to keep abreast of the changing world of wine. Since the publication of the third edition, wine making and wine appreciation have not stood still. The Old World has risen to the challenge of the New: important legislative changes have taken effect; previously unrecognized wines and wine regions are coming to the fore; wine makers are taking their skills into new regions and new countries and are learning from one another. In every wineproducing country standards of wine making are being raised in response to the unrelenting pressure for quality, not quantity. Hugh Johnson emphasizes that there is an intimate relationship between geography and wine -- that where the wine comes from determines its quality, style, and taste. This new edition of the Atlas guides the wine lover and professional through the world's quality vineyards to the year 2000. The authoritative choice of maps has been expanded in its coverage and new information added, maintaining the crucial link between wine and place. The better the wine, the more precisely the Atlas locates its origin, down to a single field. Besides revealing where a vineyard is located, maps can explain why it is there: what is singular about the site and its size; its soil, slope, sunshine, rainfall; and how it relates to its neighboring vineyards. They reveal the fundamental differences in terroir -- the myriad details of a landscape which conspire to make the difference between a grand cru and a vin de table. This new edition of the Atlas further expands its coverage and visual appeal. Every one of its 180 maps has been revised, extended where necessary, and brought completely up-to-date. Of these, 36 are totally new, mapping areas that have recently risen -- or risen again -- to excellence, or have changed so greatly that they demand new cartographic treatment. The entire introductory section on the background to wine and its enjoyment has been redesigned and newly illustrated. New artwork, color photographs, fact boxes, and tables enhance the text, much of it rewritten to reflect the latest changes. Despite the considerable efforts of competitors around the world, no other wine atlas can match The World Atlas of Wine or claim its cartographic excellence. The translation of this atlas into a dozen languages bears witness to its remarkable success. In his foreword to the third edition, the president of the Office International de la Vigne et le Vin predicted a choice place for the Atlas in every wine expert's or wine lover's library. This fourth edition is set to maintain and enhance its status through a third decade. |

The World Atlas of Wine is something of a dream-team production. The names Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson alone recommend any book on which they appear. The fifth edition (in 30 years) of this astonishingly successful book lives up to, and surpasses, its predecessors. In 350 densely packed but never clotted pages the authors manage the extraordinary feat of characterizing wine production throughout the world, from Vancouver Island to Japan--Buddhists first planted vines in that inhospitably precipitous, monsoon-lashed land over a 1,000 years ago. After a substantial introductory section dealing with the history of wine, its making, storage, and enjoyment, we're off. Starting with (where else?) France and Burgundy, each wine area is summarized in terms of its geography, climate, and preferred vines and the appellations, laws, and traditions that govern production. The discussion of Pomerol, for example, tells you a great deal in one short page. Even since 1994, when the fourth edition came out, vast changes have swept the wine world, and many parts of the atlas have been correspondingly completely reworked. South America, Canada, Southern France, Italy, Greece, Eastern Europe, and the Eastern Mediterranean are among the areas that have benefited. The regional maps that form the core of the book are a triumph of clarity. The whole production constitutes a brilliant achievement of organization and synthesis, forming an indispensable resource for any wine lover at all interested in where the wine they drink comes from and why it tastes the way it does. --Robin Davidson, Amazon.co.uk

I was very pleased to have finally discover a book that contained maps of all the premiere growing areas, especially in Europe (in topo no less.) In the past, I had been challenged searching on-line for maps that were able to pin point certain vineyards. A true atlas in every sense of the word to the greatest grape growing areas including a 14 page gazatteer to aid in locating even the smallest village.
The first 50 pages is a well illustrated lesson of wine from vine to stemware including the history of wine, grape type and identification, soils, aging and more. The atlas section contains, in addition to maps, beautiful photos and reproductions of labels pertinent to the area being described. Individual paragraphs guide the reader through these areas with details on dominant grapes grown and the leading producers. Better suited for the more advanced oenophile. If you can only own one wine book, this is it. Well-organized, enormously informative, accurate, rich writing and graphics. The A-Z of wines without pretension or being a ten volume tome.

The key to this book and how it differentiates itself from the many wine references on the market is the excellent use of geographic and topographic maps. It is in fact an atlas and is true to its name. By having vividly detailed map information for the reader, you begin to understand why various wine regions are held in higher esteem.
Aside from its primary beneift, an astute reader will derive a secondary benefit from these maps. Many chateau and wineries are located on the maps along with their vineyards. For example, while many of you may have heard of famed Chateau Mouton-Rothschild, some of you may not be aware that Chateau Clerc Milon is located adjacent to the property and in fact is owned by Mouton. This wine can be had for a much more reasonable price even though geographically they are very close. This can be also said of Chateaus Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut Brion with their vines interwined (and both owned by the Delon family) but the later an exceptional value comparatively. Used in conjunction with other wine references this atlas will fill in the geographic gaps many other references leave. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-04-11 13:39:11 EST)

Recently, my wife and I went on holiday to the Bordeaux region to tour the vineyards. This book was extremely helpful in planning and executing the trip. As geography and 'terroir' are key to understanding wine, I know of no other book that gives a better overview of this mysterious and elegant beverage. It's a must buy for wine lovers.

I'm a wine retailer in Minnesota who has learned to lean heavily on this wonderful book. If one wants comprehensive information about the world of wines, this is like a bible. Because of my job I use it weekly, and consider this work essential.
One could begin this book as a complete novice and become fully competent at understanding the often daunting complexities of wine by its end. One needn't worry about anything buying this book. It is well worth the money, and you will have a gorgeous reference at your fingertips at all times. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-02-17 22:44:45 EST)

Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson are not only rockstars in the world of wine appreciation, but they are approachable and candid in their delivery. Whether you are a seasoned wine lover, or just learning the ropes, this book is a must have.

I met a sommelier in Italy recently who gave me several lessons about wine. The very first lesson included a hands on reference to "The World Atlas of Wine." It is a must have if you are truly interested in learning about wine. The Amazon price was about $20 less than the sommelier paid in Europe!

This is one of the best books on the history of wine in the world. This book covers wine from its birth, and goes through to the modern day wine world. The nice thing about this book is that it is not a book that talks about all the different producers around the world and their vintages, but rather the regions around the world, and their history etc. I recommend this book, and 'Exploring Wine' for the person that wants to learn about wines role in the world throughout history. All this and fantastic illustrations and maps as well!
I received this book for my birthday [...]. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-07 13:50:54 EST)

If ever there was a must-have tome on wine, this would be it. It's equally at home on the reference shelf or the coffee table with its specific descriptions of both the classic regions and the emerging areas as well as its stunning photography and beautiful presentation throughout. I've owned the book for two years, and I find I'm often turning to it after enjoying a nice wine to find out more about where it was made. Why do we visit wineries? For me, it's to attach a memory or place to the product we drink. This book won't take you there physically, but really it's the next best thing presenting photographs and maps of the areas, information on what makes each area unique, as well as some of the geographic, economic, and social drivers that are making it evolve. Other reviewers have said that the book isn't as comprehensive as they would like, but it's not meant to present a thorough analysis of each wine, but rather to present notable regions on aggregate. I must admit that in some cases the representative wines given for a region wouldn't have been my choice, but I guess that's a matter of personal taste. This being the fifth revised edition of the book speaks to its enduring influence in the space, and even with the thousands of other competing products out there, I expect this reference to continue its reputation as the best there is.

This work is perfect for wine enthusiasts all over the world.
The authors depict major wine groups as to their geographical location and surrounding climate . Area maps set forth pointers to wine territories; such as, the Champagne of eastern France. The author presents the preferred soil content, climate and auvee or blend/mixture. This book would be invaluable for major restaurant owners. If you plan on entertaining an international audience, the work will assist in selecting wines specific to each country. The pictures alone are worth the price charged for the volume. I just got my copy, my tome, in the mail, and I immediately went to the sections that were reported as missing or flawed by some of the other reviewers here, and I'm glad to say that the section on Cote Chalonnaise in my book was not cut off nor was the beginning reprinted again on the two pages. There was no printing error, so I don't know what that reviewer was talking about. Besides, printing errors don't detract from this awesome book that serves as an important reference to any wine expert or wannabe, like you and me, who loves great wines from all over the world.
This will be my reference of choice until I find a better one, and I don't expect the search to end tomorrow. This is a highly useful book and well worth the price. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-02-23 13:40:56 EST)

Whether you're just looking for a book to learn the basics about wine or you're really hooked into the stuff, this is the best book there is -trust me; I own quite a library on the subject. Better to spend your money wisely and once than to throw it away later on ten cheap sales (that goes for wine too!).
This book is as simple or as researched as you need it to be. Not only that, it's a very beautiful edition (makes a nice coffee table item). And if you really enjoy it, I suggest you also get Mrs. Robinson's funny DVD "Understanding Wine" (no, not "The Graduate", you wino!). Cheers! (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-02-22 14:04:35 EST)
