Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World: 75 Dairy-Free Recipes for Cupcakes that Rule

The hosts of the vegan cooking show The Post Punk Kitchen are back with a vengeance — and this time, dessert. A companion volume to Vegan with a Vengeance, Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World is a sweet and sassy guide to baking everyone's favorite treat without using any animal products. This unique cookbook contains over 50 recipes for cupcakes and frostings — some innovative, some classics — with beautiful full color photographs. Isa and Terry offer delicious, cheap, dairy-free, egg-free and vegan-friendly recipes like Classic Vanilla Cupcakes (with chocolate frosting), Crimson Velveteen Cupcakes (red velvet with creamy white frosting), Linzer Torte Cupcakes (hazelnut with raspberry and chocolate ganache), Chai Latte Cupcakes (with powdered sugar) and Banana Split Cupcakes (banana-chocolate chip-pineapple with fluffy frosting). Included also are gluten-free recipes, decorating tips, baking guidelines, vegan shopping advice, and Isa's true cupcake anecdotes from the trenches. When Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World, no dessert lover can resist.

I've had this book for awhile, but I feel it's time to finally review it. This cookbook is truly the perfect way to show family and friends that being vegan isn't a big deal--no really. I'm the only vegan in my family, but I can't wait to knock everyone's socks off at Christmas with these delicious recipes (I'm thinking blueberry lemon creme cake for the adults, and 'decorate-it-yourself' banana split cupcakes for the younguns). Please buy this book. I love exotic vegan cooking as much as the next person, but I don't have to funds to acquire the really weird ingredients. This book has those exotic ingredients, but also simple recipes with common ingredients. I'm hoping this book will propel me to official baker of the extended family, making each gathering a little less cruel!

Unlike others i went straight for a hard recipe. Well, for me at least :) Orange creamsicle cupcakes! After my bf helped me figure out I would have to turn up the heat a little to make the orange pudding, (evil electric stove) it was smooth sailing. They came out fantastic and noone at the party had any idea they were vegan until we told them. The orange buttercream frosting is to die for btw.
I also made the mexican cocoa cupcakes that day. They tasted great but i had a little spill over and the tops kept popping off. I think that was me, not the recipe!

I've had this cookbook for a couple of years now and have easily tried out half the recipes, all with excellent results! The recipes are easy to follow, even the more complicated ones, and produce great treats every time ranging from the simple to the decadent.

I get repeated requests for the gingerbread, chocolate chip pumpkin, and almond cupcakes (which I make without the apricot filling and with almond buttercream frosting). The green tea, chocolate stout, and banana split cupcakes are all delightful as well. In addition to the recipes the authors include hints, tips and tricks to answer baking questions and give additional options.

All this and vegan too!

I bought this book because I was looking for interesting cupcake recipes on the internet. I saw a picture of pistachio rosewater cupcakes and found out that the recipe came from this book. I am not nor have ever been remotely vegan, but I bought it anyway. Every single recipe that I've tried so far has been wonderful and delicious - oreo, peanut butter, maple, low-fat vanilla, red velvet, and pistachio rosewater - all so yummy! And if I don't have the right soy products in my house, then I substitute with dairy and they still turn out great.

I agree with one of the other reviews that was disappointed with the unhealthiness of the cupcakes, but they ARE cupcakes, I guess I wasn't expecting them to be super healthy.

This book has gotten me into the kitchen, which was a rarity before. I love it and recommend it to everyone I know.

Grab the book as fast as you can and watch people fall over to be your friend!

Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World is one of the best recipe books I've ever read. Not only is it amazingly detailed and clear but it is also funny -I found myself laughing at many of the commentaries and advises Isa and Terry give.
I recently became a vegetarian and I hope I can make the conversion to a vegan lifestyle in the future as I am not yet ready to make that change.
I identify myself as a vegetarian, however, if I can make food or buy a product that supports vegan lifestyle, I will buy it or make it. I hope it is not seen from vegan's and vegetarian's point of view as a hypocrite thing to do. I feel like whatever I can do to help out both lifestyles, I will do.
This is an amazing book. The cupcakes I've made have become pretty popular between my friends and people at my University. I've also had the chance to spread the word about vegetarianism and veganism (there's people here who didn't even know what it was). I am very happy and look forward to buying more of Isa's and Terry's books.

I've had this book for a couple of years and it is, without a doubt, my favorite cookbook of all time! I've probably made 100 batches of cupcakes, and they have all been AMAZING. I mostly feed them to non-vegan people, and every single time I've given them to someone new, they have commented, "This is the best cupcake I have ever eaten." Not just the best *vegan* cupcake, mind you.... the best cupcake period!

I highly suggest the chocolate cupcakes filled with the peanut butter icing... it will change your life!

Since I got this book, I've become a Cupcake Superstar, and my reputation as a Master Cupcake Baker is known far and wide. :-) Thanks, Isa!!!

It was a chilly Sunday morning in March when my parents announced they were going to become vegans. In their hazy, half-asleep state, the morning radio show to which their alarm was set had been replaced with a talk show. That morning's guest was a doctor and very vocal vegan who insisted easy weight loss was within one's grasp if one simply went vegan. After a week of listening to my pensioner parents insist that they needed to become vegans, I went to Barnes and Noble and picked up every vegan cookbook I could find: Vegan with a Vengeance and Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World being the two books our small local store kept in stock.

Five weeks later and several pounds lighter, my parents gave up veganism after I had to, once again, stop them from ordering a cheese and bean burrito or honey-mustard salad dressing because they didn't actually understand what vegan meant. However, I kept the cookbooks, and have referred to them ever since whenever a work potluck or party required me to bring cupcakes.

My office is filled with people who have a variety of dietary restrictions -- many women self-diagnosed with IBS, one with so many digestive problems almost everything you can name will kill her, and one with celiac's disease. Yet, inevitably, I can find a recipe that will satisfy those with sensitive tummies and still be satisfying to those who can eat almost anything.

The Mucho Margarita cupcakes were a hit, and my concoction based on the Vanilla and Agave Nectar cupcakes with peanut buttercream frosting and chocolate ganache are ridiculously popular at home.

But it's not just the amazing results that make these light, fluffy, and oh-so-delicious recipes a hit. It's also the ease of the directions, which I don't need a culinary degree to decipher and the simple ingredients. Yes, agave nectar was hard to come by until a Wegman's opened in my area, and I still have trouble finding green tea powder, but so much of this is so simple, I was able to whip up a dozen last night within an hour, and without going to the store to buy any special ingredients. So their quick, easy, and delicious!

The best part, though, is that unless you let your secret slip, most people do not know that they are vegan!

And did I mention the taste? The texture? The perfection of these little cakes that are like gateway drugs into veganism in general? The book should come with a warning that you will experiment with more vegan cookbooks after you bite into one of these sweet treats if your only aversion in the past has been the bad texture or flavor of vegan food.

God, that's good.

Even if you aren't vegan, do yourself a favor and give this cookbook a try! Wonderfully innovative and delicious recipies, easy to follow instructions and great ingredient suggestions make this gem of a book suitable for anyone on any budget. I made the mocha version of the chocolate cupcake and it was so freaking great I just had to rush to the computer and write a review. Seriously. Even if you have never baked anything in your life, the authors offer trouble shooting tips and explanations of ingredients for those who need a little extra help.
You won't have buyer's remorse, but you may feel a little guilty after eating a way too many cupcakes...

I haven't made my way through ALL of the recipes in this wonderful cookbook, but am approaching half of them. Every time I've tried one of the recipes I've found them very easy to follow and the results are delightful, delicious every single time. The almond cupcakes, with or without the apricot jam, are a big hit and have been requested many times now. I've also done then with an almond butter cream, instead of the apricot glaze, and rolled into toasted almond slivers -- looked beautiful and tasted wonderful. Other faves & raves have been the chocolate stout, banana split, gingerbread, chocolate chip pumpkin, and the green tea cupcakes!

I cannot get enough of these cupcakes! I just made the simple chocolate cupcakes with the rich chocolate mousse topping last night. I jazzed them up with a little layer of homemade raspberry jam. There are not only plenty of unique and delicious (not to mention easy) recipes, they almost all have variations to try out. The ingredients are easy to keep on hand, the variety has something for everyone, and the cream cheese frosting is to die for!
Also, the writing is funny and fun, like cooking with your best girlfriend. My husband and I make these cupcakes together and in less than an hour we have cupcakes that are cooled and iced. We always laugh about the commentary in the recipes, my favorite being, "use a double boiler to melt down the chocolate chips. Of course, you don't have a double boiler, so use..." I just love that feel of these cupcakes as something you do with family and friends, not in a formal kitchen.
Enjoy!

This book is the best thing that has happened to me in a long time! Not only am I vegan, but I'm allergic to gluten/wheat products! And she includes a scrumptious vanilla and chocolate version of GF cupcakes in here! All a GF vegan has to do is substitute the GF cupcakes into any of the recipes in here and voila! An amazing cupcake that all your friends at work will ask you to make over and over..yes, they're vegan...and many "non-veg-savvy" are frightened at the prospect...but these cupcakes are total, over the top crowd pleasers!!! Even my boyfriend likes them...and he's a real "I like meat" kinda guy...if this book can win him over, it can win your man over too...not to mention your boss, your friends, your relatives...the list goes on and on and on...buy it...it's the best book I've bought in a long long time! You will not be disappointed.

I was craving cupcakes, and remembered seeing Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World at Whole Foods. So I ran over there and got the book as well as the ingredients to make the basic vanilla cupcakes, and the vegan cream cheese frosting (lemon variation). I doubled the amount of lemon zest in the frosting (1 T wasn't enough) - and the cupcakes are unbelievably good. I just ate two! Highly recommend this book. Only problem is deciding what to make next...

The cupcakes are delicious, moist, and gorgeous; there's a wonderful variety of offerings from the very easy to the uber-fancy, but Isa and Terry make it all very non-threatening. I made a batch of the lemon macadamia nut cupcakes for a party not long ago and they were devoured instantly; only my lactose-intolerant bf knew that they were vegan. The cupcakes I've made have all turned out to be moist (it's worth saying twice) and flavorful, and could stand alone nicely without frosting--strong words from someone who normally ignores the cake entirely in favor of the frosting! The authors pay scrupulous attention to flavor, mouthfeel, and texture in all recipes; the tips on baking and where to find some of the less everyday materials or ingredients are also very helpful.

Some of the ingredients can be hard to find for some of the recipes (I have torn the greater St. Louis area apart trying to find vegan cream cheese, to no avail), but that's sort of to be expected. Bottom line, I'll happily live in any world these ladies decide to take over.

These recipes are wonderful, and like Veganomicon (buy this too if you don't own it!), the cookbook itself is well written, instructive and humorous. There are also a lot of good pictures of the cupcakes too. The recipes mostly use ingredients that a vegetarian or vegan would have on hand (though there are some rather "gourmet" cupcakes that might stretch the limits of your pantry) and the cupcakes cook up wonderfully. I have brought them to work and to parties and my Omni friends and co-workers never knew the difference. In fact, most asked for the recipes, and were stumped when I showed them!

So far, I have made:

Cupcakes: Golden Vanilla, Basic Chocolate, Mucho Margarita (OMG you have to try these!!!)
Icings: Chocolate Ganache, Chocolate Mousse, Margarita Glaze

This book is incredible. I purchased it awhile back after reading it in B&N and put it on the shelf for about a year. When I finally got it down, I tried one recipe and it was amazing! I have since made about 6 different recipes from this book and I am looking forward to making more.

There are a variety of recipes here, some that ask for harder to find ingredients (like agar agar powder or matcha), and some that just use regular everyday stuff. I began working with the simpler recipes (basic vanilla, mucho margarita) and have since moved on to the more complicated ones (Brookyn vs Boston Cream pie, Green Tea). All of the recipes have been delicious. And I'M NOT VEGAN!!!!

I am having a hard time buying another cupcake book because this one is soooo good! There are great pictures, decorating ideas, and variations. I hope they come out with another book!

Vegan or not, this book has got it goin' on. Not only is it fun to read (I've read the A to Z a few times!), the recipies are very accurate. I've had books and recipes from "celebrity" bakers, those who have even been featured on the famed Food Network, and their recipes were awful - they just don't turn out like illustrated in a regular kitchen. Now, if you'd like a recipe for 24 cupcakes that actually MAKES like ... FIFTY, then I can recommend a book from a young lady in NYC ...

But really, this book is great. The recipes are easy and simple to make, and are infused with fun and wit to boot. These have got to appeal to even the biggest carnivores and baking-haters alike! I plan on making every recipe in the book, then doing a crash South Beach Diet ...

One note: Definitely take the advice on the Golden Vanilla Cupcakes to use the margerine recipe. I would also recommend cake flour instead of regular flour. The oil recipe comes out a little denser than I'd prefer, but if you don't have margerine or cake flour, they're still vegan-ly delicious.

I came across this book by accident and was skeptical at first. After searching around on the web, I found a recipe for vegan chocolate cupcakes from this book at Chow.com. I tried it, and was instantly hooked! If you are unsure about the recipes like I was, try the chocolate cupcake recipe first :) You won't be dissappointed!

The cupcakes were moist, delicious, and so simple to make. I believe they're almost fool proof and way better than the cupcakes I previously made from scratch the old way. Everyone that has tried this cupcake has raved about how delicious it is! Of course, these will not end up tasting like your box mix cupcakes, but they will surely be a LOT healtier for you!

I can wait to try every single recipe in this book!! I'm so happy with the results!

I am not a vegan, and am not easily excited about vegan baked goods. However I do have a best friend who is a committed vegan and who very much is excited by vegan baked goods. When I purchased this book for her as a birthday gift, she was beyond thrilled. I guess she had another vegan cookbook by this same author, and had already fallen in love with her recipes. (Who knew?)
She later made chocolate-strawberry-something cupcakes from this book, and when I tasted them, they really weren't half bad. If you didn't really think about it, you almost couldn't tell that they were vegan. If all vegan baked goods tasted like these cupcakes, maybe vegan cupcakes really could take over the world.
As she told me, "This book is as good as it gets!"

From the organizer of the first and second annual Santa Barbara vegan bake off:

I like to try lots of different baking books--vegan and non-vegan alike.

I was sitting down tonight with my King Arthur Baker's Companion (amazing but each recipe has at least a stick of butter in it) and even leafed through How it All Vegan (their choc chip recipe is pretty good) before I remembered I had picked up this little book. The book is well written and fun to look through. Perfect for those nights when you just want to make something fun after dinner without having to prepare with a ton of ingredients in advance.

I chose a red velvet cupcake recipe and a vegan cream cheese frosting.

What can I say, my boyfriend has already eaten half the batch so I must say it was a success!

It's a lovely book and will be a useful guide in getting the dairy out of baked goods, but I have to say I'm a bit stunned that a vegan cookbook is so full of white flour and white sugar. There are just so many healthier sweeteners and flours to use that I can't imagine why the recipes weren't developed to be really healthy instead of simply dairy free.

My only complaint is a good deal of the recipes include odd-ish items or somewhat expensive items. I live in a rural area where a great deal of vegan friendly products are hard/impossible to come by.

I've been baking a new recipe every week since I got this book! It's fantastic. The basic recipes alone would be enough to get you through any birthday party -- there's basic vanilla and chocolate, and frosting recipes for each. Just like Betty Crocker used to make, except there're no eggs or dairy. The vast majority of the ingredients are pantry standards for me, like sugar, salt, soy milk, flour. It's only for the more special recipes that I've had to search out some unique ingredients like maple extract or agar flakes, and an early introductory section helps you locate or substitute ingredients if need be. Once you get into the Classic and Fancy recipe sections, you realize how innovative the authors are and what a resource they've created. Carrot Cake, S'More, Tiramisu, Lemon Macadamia - these are just a few of the recipes I've tried, so far everything's been excellent. This book should be standard-issue for any new vegan: you get your B12 supplements, your pleather shoes, and your copy of Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World.

Read an article about this book in a newspaper and planned to buy it for a friend who's son is allergic to eggs, and ended up buying one for myself too! My family isn't vegetarian, but we don't eat a lot of meat, so didn't see any reason why we had to have eggs and milk in our cupcakes. Being a mom of a two and four year old - we love cupcakes, and this book makes making them soooo much fun, and positively delicious! Great photos and layout to boot!

Simple to follow recipes with amazing results. Perfect for non-vegans, no one believes me that anything I have made from this cookbook is Vegan! Highly recommend! Great photos and step by step instructions, perfect for the non-experienced or experienced baker!

This book is beyond amazing- it is the only cookbook that everything single thing I try works out everytime - EVEN if I alter the recipe a bit. Case in Point: the sexy low-fat vanilla muffin recipe was so great that I decided to try, using your cupcake recipe as a guide, and make raspberry muffins (using wholewheat flour and a less sugar) and they were the best muffins I ever tasted- ever!. So, thanks again Isa & Chandra, VCTOTW impressed me so much, I just bought your Veganomicon book- cant wait to have fun w/ all your creative recipe creations. Ive been veggie since I was 11 yrs old (a long time); vegan cuisine (thanks in large part to you two) is maturing and coming into a new era of sophistication. [This Aint the veggie cookbook from 20 yrs ago- lemme tell ya!]

We bought this book because our daughter has an egg allergy. The chocolate cupcakes are perfect (I did use whole milk instead of soy but I'm sure soy would be great too). Everyone who has tried them can't believe that they are egg-less and it actually tastes just as good as my Mom's chocolate cake (with dairy) that has been a family favorite forever. I do eat dairy but I would choose to make the chocolate cupcakes over regular chocolate cake recipes any day. Can't wait to try more!

I bought this book on an excited recommendation of a friend of mine and, I must say, I'm now just as overjoyed as she is. I just got the book last week and have already made the Gingerbread cupcakes w/ Lemon Buttercream frosting and Coconut Lime cupcakes with Lime Buttercream frosting. Both batches were gone within a day they're so unbelievably good. I seriously cannot.stop.eating them.

This book looks full of great delicious looking cupcake recipes and also offers useful tips throughout the book. The author's experience is obvious in the helpful tips. It offers ganauche, basic icing recipes that you can vary throughout the book: it's simple, organized, and straightforward. However, non-hydrogenated shortening and non-hydrogenated margerine are staples in the icing which is brilliant but I don't know where to find non-hydrogenated shortening. Otherwise there are no really specialty items to buy. It looks really good.. i haven't tried it yet. But there are just enough pictures... not on every single page like some other overpriced modern-looking cookbooks... but just enough to show the important stuff. I want to buy Veganomicon now.

I have been baking my way through Ms. Moskowitz' book and have made the best cupcakes I've made in years! My family has been enjoying the treats and any problems have been due to my error, not due to any problems with the recipes themselves. No one needs to spend money on "Sprinkles" cupcakes when they have this wonderful book at their fingertips!!

Ok, seriously, this book is ridiculous! The cupcakes would fool any non-vegan! I made some of the Golden vanilla cupcakes with chocolate buttercream frosting and brought them to a 4 year olds birthday party, since I was the only vegan attending and wanted to eat something sweet with everyone. Well, the cupcakes went faster than the kid's birthday cake!Great book- a MUST HAVE!!

Many of my coworkers are vegan, so I got this book to make birthdays a little more delicious, and every recipe is a gem. They are so tasty, and offer so many unusual options, and I've never made better icing. This is truly an "I can't believe it's vegan" cookbook.

The only word I have for this book is delicious! Each cupcake I've made so far has been delicious, and I have to convince people that they're vegan!
The basic cupcakes are also really easy to make, which is a bonus.

I was a strict vegan for many years, now an omnivore. But I still prefer to bake like a vegan--not so much for health reasons, but I find it easier, challenging and fun at the same time. I borrowed the book from the library to try it, and will definitely be purchasing it for myself.

So far we've made the Vanilla Cupcakes with Fluffy Vanilla Buttercream, and the Cookies and Cream Cupcakes...both way better than any non-vegan cupcake I've made in my life!

The buttercream frosting recipe alone is worth the price of the book. It's the first time i've made perfect, spreadable, delicious buttercream frosting. And the chocolate cupcake recipe is divine, and as the authors suggested, I'll be making those without frosting for quick little chocolate cakes.

The authors' troubleshooting suggestions are helpful too; it had been a long time since i'd attempted cupcakes, but I felt confident when following their advice. A well-done, fun, cute book, with fantastic recipes.

These recipes are great! I have only done the basics so far. Chocolate and vanilla, then I tried them with variation and made the cookies N cream and the lemon versions. There are many recipes in this book, then at the end of each recipe they give you variations. So fun! The frostings are great too! Closest to the "real" thing then any others I have tried. I made a batch of V & C for easter and they were a hit! Everyone was so impressed that they are better for you than traditional cupcakes and they taste amazing. I reccomend this book for all people. Vegan or not!

(Hide Review...)  Fantastic! Vegan or not, if you own ONE cupcake book, this one should be it
Reviewer Permalink
Let's start by saying that I'm not a vegan or even a vegetarian, but I do have an intolerance to dairy and wheat, and so do both my daughters.

Let's also say that while I consider myself a good cook, until recently my experiences with baking had been somewhat disappointing. I decided to change that, especially because of my oldest daughter. There seems to be a birthday, bake sale or celebration of some kind every other week at her school, and I wanted her to be able to enjoy something without the stomach upset that almost invariably follows dairy and wheat consumption. I decided to start with cupcakes because they are less threatening than cake (to me, the inexperienced baker) and kids love them (and so do most adults).

I chose this book based on the reviews, and I am very glad I did! I have now made cupcakes a few times and I am very happy with the results. I was able to make very good vegan, gluten-free vanilla cupcakes for a school celebration and absolutely scrumptious sugar-free (agave-sweetened) chocolate cupcakes for a brunch, and got rave reviews both times.

The book gives very clear instructions in the recipes, clear explanations of the ingredients to chose in the introductory section, and it even includes troubleshooting tips for all of us new to baking cupcakes, which are absolutely brilliant because I was able to immediately pinpoint and correct the reason why my first cupcakes had sunk (oven temperature).

The book also features numerous recipes that range from the classic cupcakes like Vanilla and Chocolate, to some very fun, made-to-impress recipes like Cookies 'n' Cream Cupcakes, Tiramisù Cupcakes and Chocolate Cherry Crème Cupcakes (and more) to the adventurous and interesting like Green Tea Cupcakes with Green Tea Glaze and Almond Flowers, Chai Latte Cupcakes or Pistachio Rosewater Cupcakes, sure to attract attention at your next party and make you known as "the one with the delicious cupcakes" from the very first time around.

If I had one issue with this book would be that the recipes include a bit too much sugar, but I was quickly mollified by the fact that the authors include clear instructions to modify the recipes so they can be made with Agave Syrup instead - and also include a recipe for Agave-sweetened vanilla or chocolate cupcakes, and one for Agave-sweetened icing. I also appreciate that they included a recipe for gluten-free cupcakes, thereby giving some guidance for adventurous cooks who are ready to modify the other recipes in the book the same way.

So for all these reasons (and more, because I'm peretty sure I forgot something!), I give this book 5 stars, a rare occurrence but fully deserved!!
