|
Cathe Olson (Simply Natural Baby Food) is back with The Vegetarian Mother's Cookbook, a collection of more than 300 delicious whole foods recipes designed to nourish mothers and their families throughout pregnancy and lactation. The easy-to-prepare dishes are packed with protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids to help both mother and baby thrive. Entrées include many "quick fix" meals and freezable dishes - perfect for the busy parent. Many of the recipes in the book are vegan, and almost all of the recipes provide vegan options. For those with allergies, wheat-free, soy-free, dairy-free, and egg-free dishes are also included. There are even teas and tonics to help ease common pregnancy discomforts.
In addition to recipes, The Vegetarian Mother's Cookbook provides up-to-date nutritional information with recommended dietary intakes, complete guide to ingredients, suggested shopping list, and tips for saving time and minimizing work in the kitchen. This book is a comprehensive eating guide for vegetarian mothers, and for non-vegetarians who want to include more whole foods in their diets. |

The book is one of the few cookbooks, vegetarian and non-vegetarian alike that shares my philosophy of not using refined sugars in my cooking. I have enjoyed the recipes so far that I have prepared. I would recommend this book to both vegetarians and non-vegetarians, even if they were not pregnant.

Absolutely love this book! All of the recipes are delicious! Even my non-veggie husband enjoys the meals that I make from this cookbook. It's not just for pregnant moms, but for the whole family.

I'm glad I chose this book. The recipes are simple and straightforward, and many of them can be prepared in stages. They're also very malleable -- it's helpful that the author always suggests different kinds of nut butters or sweeteners, for variety and availability. I particularly appreciated the tea and drink section at the end of the book.
So far I've used the recipes for Sweet Potato Biscuits, Granola, the Orange Creamsicle Smoothie, and the Tomato Omelet, and I've got a bunch tagged for future use. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-04-17 10:10:35 EST)

This cookbook is absolutely amazing! I got it from the library a few days ago and ordered one for myself the very next day! I have made recipes from it EVERY DAY since I got it and they have all been wonderful! The very first recipe I made was Cathe's Tofu Vegetable Stir Fry and I had a question about browning my tofu. In the book she shared her email address and said that she welcomed comments or questions. I figured it was a long shot but I emailed her (not expecting to get a reply). Well, much to my surprise, not only did she reply, but she gave me step by step instructions to answer my question and was so friendly and helpful! She didn't seem at all put out that I would ask such a simple question. Since then I have made her Potatoes and Veggies served with Scrambled Eggs, her High Protein Pasta with her Easy Marinara sauce and her Pumpkin Pesto Ravioli (my personal FAVORITE!!!). My family (3 1/2 yr old twins, a 1 1/2 yr old and a very picky hubby) all LOVED every single thing I have made from this book!!
Another perk is that she shares nutritional information on all the recipes. Also, the recipes are EASY to make and don't have difficult to find ingredients. She also has freezing instructions for many of the recipes which is extremely helpful! I'm having a BLAST with my new cookbook. This is by far the best recipe and nutrition book I've ever seen. I can't put it down - it is worse than being in the middle of a good novel! :-) I have a TON of cookbooks in my kitchen and this one is by far the very best one I own. Don't be fooled - this book is not only for pregnant/nursing mothers. It is for ANYONE who wants HEALTHY, DELICIOUS, EASY RECIPES. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-04-08 01:09:39 EST)

My husband and I and now our 14 month old son stick to a diet that is about 90-95% vegetarian. We can't always live up to being completely meat-free, but only because sometimes the vegetarian options are less than satisfying. With that said, I am always looking for tasty vegetarian recipes that don't feel like punishment. Cathe Olsen is amazing!!!
There are combinations that I would never have thought of and every ounce of me says "Ewww, that won't work together." But a leap of faith and a little cooking later and I am stunned that everything turns out so tasty. It is expanding my repertoire of vegetarian cooking and inspiring my own new recipes using some of the different ingredients I had never used before this book. Very inspiring. I have not had a single disappointing recipe from this book. Everything, absolutely everything is wonderful. My family is eating it all up. My husband is even taking the leftovers to work for lunch on his own initiative (and he really hates leftovers). I highly recommend the tortilla soup and the squash and bean soup and the sweet potato enchiladas. The squash and spinach lasagna was great (except I think I might par-boil the lasagna noodles next time b/c I think the starch in the noodles gives off a bitter taste). My main purpose for eating primarily vegetarian is the health benefit. This book gives you a break down of nutrients, vitamins and minerals with each recipe. I initially picked up the book when I got pregnant, but the title is a bit misleading. This isn't just for pregnant mamas, it is fantastic eating for everyone. Love it. Buy it. You won't regret it. We are a vegan and vegetarian family. I like that she gives vegan alternatives to her recipes. My toddler likes mostly everything I make from this book. I've tagged a lot of the recipes, and use them frequently. I found this book after my daughter was born, so I didn't use the pregnancy info. My sister in-law did and found the info very useful. I completely recommend this book.

This is such a good cookbook, it has so many delicous recipes in it. I do eat meat and I do add meat to some of the recipes, but they are so yummy as is to. It gives me great ideas for healthy food for my family.
My favorite part of the cookbook is how she has a list of recipes to try at various stages in your pregnancy, and even post-partum, while lactating, and trying to conceive. Also quick to make and foods frozen well are indicated which is great for a soon to be, or even seasoned mother or father. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-12-11 11:19:59 EST)

I'm in my first trimester and am very conscious about what I eat. Being a vegetarian (and first time mom), I was initially worried I may not get the right nutrition for my growing baby. Not anymore... This book is fantastic. There's a lot of great information about the nutrition needed before, during and after pregnancy. There are even suggested menus for pre-conception, 1st, 2nd and 3rd trimesters. The recipes are delicious and easy to make. This book is a must have.
I also recommend "Your Vegetarian Pregnancy: A Month-by-Month Guide to Health and Nutrition" (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-01-17 07:17:22 EST)

Cathe Olson, author of Simply Natural Baby Food is back! And, wow!
From shopping lists to sample menus to sound nutritional information for pregnancy and lactation, this book covers everything you want to know, and more! There are sections on how to supplement your diet to help with everything from cravings, constipation and heartburn to a colicky baby, lack of breastmilk and depression. But that's only the beginning. There are over 300 recipes in this cookbook. When I first got this book, I started by writing little notes to myself in the margins: things like "Yumm!", "Quick and Easy" and "Great!" Pretty soon, I realized the whole book was being marked up and now I have little post-its sticking out all over to remind myself to "make that again!" Every recipe has been a hit! Many of the recipes are vegan; those that aren't offer a vegan alternative. Each recipe offers nutritional information and key nutrients. Many of the recipes offer freezing directions and variation ideas. In addition to seemingly endless healthful recipes and unique ideas for everything from breakfasts to snacks, to stews, entrees and desserts the whole family will dive into, Olson offers a variety of teas and tonics to soothe pregnancy discomforts. This book should be in every family's kitchen! It is truly the best `family' cookbook I have come across. --Ginger Carlson (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-01-17 07:17:22 EST)

I originally bought this book for a friend who was pregnant but when I saw how many great recipes were in it - recipes that I knew my family would like - I had to get one for myself. Tortilla Soup, Squash and White Bean Soup, Tamale Pie, Shepherds Pie, Spanikopitta, Yogurt-Spinach Quiche (well I could go on) are now regularly on the menu at our house. At a party we had recently, I made the Tofu and Udon Noodle Salad with Sesame-Peanut Dressing and Curried Rice Salad and they were both a hit.
The desserts are great too - we love the Applesauce Cake and Cranberry Date Bars (both vegan), as well as the delicious and easy "Better Than Ice Cream" varieties. And they are all made without refined sweeteners. I'm so happy to have found a book of easy to make recipes that are family friendly and healthy. I recommend this whether you are a parent or not - and even if you are not a vegetarian but just want to eat whole, natural foods. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-01-17 07:17:22 EST)

This hefty yet not overwhelming volume would be welcome in any vegetarian or vegan kitchen. The subtitle is "Whole foods to nourish pregnant and breastfeeding women-and their families" but its usefulness will go on long after the woman of the house is pregnant and breastfeeding. The meals are simple to prepare, nourishing, and will appeal to all types of palates, from the very basic to the fussy to the adventurous. One standout feature is that each recipe, aside from displaying nutritional data, details key nutrients. So, it's easy to see which recipes contain nutrients important to pregnancy and lactation like iron, folate, and so on, and in what quantities.
I sure wish I had this book when I was pregnant and breastfeeding. It's so much better than that ridiculous "What to Eat When You're Expecting," so much friendlier, and not the least judgemental. My "babies" are now vegan teens and we all enjoyed Cathe's Miso-Noodle Soup, Tofu Enchiladas, Pasta with Vegetables and Pine Nuts, and others. I have numerous post-its throughout the book marking recipes to be tried. I have lots of cookbooks in my kitchen aimed at more general audiences, but this cookbook for vegetarian moms will prove far more useful than most. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-01-17 07:17:22 EST)
