Winner of the 1995 James Beard Award for Best Vegetarian Cookbook
Although many people think that cooking without meat means spending more time in the kitchen, the cooks at the world-renowned Moosewood Restaurant know this isn't so. Busy balancing home, work, and other commitments, they've been cooking for family and friends every day of the week for over twenty years. Moosewood Restaurant Cooks at Home is the result of that experience -- over 150 carefully honed and tested recipes calling for the best ingredients, accompanied by time-saving tips and planning suggestions, add up to a delicious whole-foods cuisine that is versatile and healthful and can be prepared with a minimum of effort. This book contains dishes full of exciting flavors, sure to please every taste, from savory soups to substantial main-dish salads, from hearty stews to palate-teasing "small dishes." Sauces, salsas and dressings, and a collection of almost-instant desserts turn the simplest meal into an occasion. Chapters on techniques and menu planning, lists of recipes for special needs, including nondairy and vegan fare and kid-pleasing food, as well as an in-depth guide to stocking the meatless pantry (including a list of recommended convenience foods), make Moosewood Restaurant Cooks at Home the essential companion to everyday cooking.

The Moosewood Collective has had big vegetarian cookbook success with other collections. The main aim of this addition to their list is to offer much-needed help to those who need recipes for speedy preparation. Most take less than 30 minutes preparation. Recipes include stir-fries, salads, sandwiches, bean dips, soups, scones, pancakes and desserts. Almost all are vegan, with dairy products offered only as optional extras, though there is a separate section on fish and eggs. Winner of the 1995 James Beard Award for vegetarian cookbooks.

I've used my Moosewood cookbooks forever. The fish packet recipes are excellent and impress dinner guests. They also freeze well. Our favorite is the Asian, I haven't tried the French version yet.

I love this cookbook. The recipes are delicious and best of all they are easy enough to prepare after the work-day. I would highly recommend this book for people looking to eat healthfully during the week, but don't have time for long preparations and piles of pots and pans once the meal is over. I'll be buying the Moosewood Simple Suppers cookbook next.

This has been great to go with her other book, simple cooking. I do wish it was in a binder type cookbook. Would be easier to use in the kitchen. Has great recipes.

I've had this cookbook since I was an intern right out of college, and it has been my favorite ever since. I especially like the fish recipes, the chick pea artichoke heart stew, and veggie chili recipes. I find that with the lower fat recipes, I can usually eat as much as I want, and still know that I am maintaining a healthy weight, which I struggle with usually. I am buying this book today for my mom, who is now living alone and needs healthy easy recipes. My husband likes it too, since the meals are hearty (he's 6'-5"). I usually make a double recipe and freeze half in individual servings. I highly recommend this, especially for new cooks and busy people, since the recipes are all reasonably quick (like, 45 minutes to an hour). It may not be for gourmets, since there are a lot of pre-prepared foods used (canned beans and vegetables.) You could always substitute your own soaked dry beans if you were feeling ambitious, but the cookbook is great because it uses lots of shortcuts. I highly recommend the book, and I'm not even vegetarian!

This is a wonderful cookbook for those who typically cook a strict, healthful diet, but it will also fool our friends and family who aren't ready to give up their poor diets. Easy to follow recipes.

This is my favorite cookbook, I use it monthly. It's very versatile containing all sorts of every day recipes from simple to fancy and they're all relatively easy to prepare.
Moosewood Cooks At Home is one of the best examples of how healthy and fresh eating can also be delicious and easy to prepare for your household. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-12-21 20:02:21 EST)

I've cooked from these recipes for several years, and I've used it so much the binding has given out. It's one of my favorite cookbooks, because the recipes are up to the Moosewood standards, but are not too time-consuming. A few of the recipes I make on a regular basis for my family. If Moosewood ever comes out with a sequel, I'll buy it!

I bought this book because I had recently seen Mooswood restraunt featured on a T.V. cooking show. I have to say I was a little disappointed when I started going through it. So many of the recipes were so basic, it was more like "how to boil water if you are vegetarian". I guess it is a good place to start if you are new to cooking period, and want to be vegetarian, but it is not for a more advanced cook. I recommend Vegetarian Times Complete Cookbookor 1,001 Low-Fat Vegetarian Recipes: Delicious, Easy-to-Make, Healthy Meals for Everyone (1,001) This is my favorite.

This is the most used vegetarian cookbook in my library. The recipes are reasonably fast, simple and tasty. I haven't been disappointed by a single recipe so far. Off to the side of each recipe the book gives you fuller menu options from other recipes in the book. It also gives you a brief description of just what it is that you are making. In addition to me being satisfied with the meals that come out of this book, my children (ages 4, 7, and 9) are also very satisfied. It is a big hit for the entire family. I find with most recipes that I can start making dinner at 5:00 and we can be seated and eating by 6:00. The recipes I've made so far are quite simple to make and most enjoyable to eat. My favourite recipe to date is the black bean soup. It is quick and easy to make if you use canned beans and produces a rich and satisfying meal that we all love. This is definitely a great cookbook for anybody, but especially for somebody that doesn't have several hours to spend on making dinner.

I own a number of the Moosewood series cookbooks. This one is quickly becoming a favorite. The Avocado & Corn Salad, Spicy Corn Quesadilla, and Tomato & Bean Salad are my favorites so far. It's great to be able to cook a delicious veg. meal in under a half hour. Highly recommended.

I'm a "veg head" and my family isn't. I use this cookbook as one of my main cookbooks. Yes, sometimes I "round out" a meal with a meat or fish, for my young sons, but mostly, we just eat a main course from here, and round out the veggie portion of what we haven't had that day.
Our favorites (and my neighbors, whom I sometimes share our meals with)are the Golden Cheddar Soup, Sweet potato Quesadillas, and the African Pineapple Stew. Yes, some are recipes that have "different" ingredients in them, but "different" can be good. My sons are adventurous eaters, with help from this cookbook. The recipies in this book are very easy, accessible, healthy and most of all....delicious! The soups in particular are flavorful and satisfying and do not require a lot of clean-up afterwards. Just cook it all in the same pot and you are ready to go. The pasta recipies are also very tasty. It's a great way to get your veggies without feeling hungry at the end of the meal. I highly recommend this book!

I use this book all the time. I have become a guerilla vegetarian, slipping veggie meals to my family without their knowledge. Both my 6 year old son and my 14 year old daughter haven't noticed. The only complaint I've received was on the re-presentation of curried garbanzo beans by my son ("This again?"). The dishes are tasty and quick, and easy to prepare. I serve them up with some homemade whole wheat bread and everone gets plenty to eat. Highly recommended!

This is my favorite Moosewood book, because everything is fast, and a lot of the recipes call for things that we have around the house. There's an African peanut butter and pineapple stew that we make all the time, for example, and it's delicious (we make it last minute a lot so we substitute frozen spinach, which we always have around, for the kale, which we have to make a special trip for). We have 4 other Moosewood books but we use this one the most (we use the first book a lot also, and the new classics one also. Still life and enchanted forest we rarely use. Our other favorite cookbooks are Jane Brody's Good Food, Tara Duggan's book, and Quick Vegetarian Pleasures).

Do you have expensive tastes? Are you rich? Childless? If so, then this cookbook is for you! I've never even heard of some of these ingredients and the ones that weren't too expensive are nothing that my kids would eat. In fact, I couldn't find a single thing that my kids would eat, and I don't think the average kid would either. I think most of these recipes are something only an adult would appreciate. Well, I guess I can't say that my kids wouldn't like ANYTHING out of this book. They'd probably like a couple of the dessert recipes. Check this out from your local library first. I'm glad I did.

I'm interested in low fat, quick meatless cooking - and this is the cookbook I use most often. I've been very pleased with the way the food tastes and how quick it is to prepare. I have many other cookbooks, but in some I use only one recipe. This book has at least 10 recipes I used regularly. This is my first Moosewood cookbook, but I have many vegetarian cookbooks.
This book is for you if you like basic recipes and/or quick meals, which the name implies. I usually like meals that are a little more gourmet, but this book will do in a pinch on a weeknight or if you have kids. There are really some delicous recipes in here, and the cook times are reduced by using canned beans, etc. Most recipes use cheese, which I don't eat. There are also many seafood recipes. If you're not vegan, you'll find most of the recipes right up your alley. It can save you on a weeknight. The other feature I like, is the index in the back. They organize recipes by the time you have to cook, if you're having company, and/or if you're vegan. That's helpful, so you don't have to leaf through the whole book. I use this one fairly regularly because the recipes are quicker than the other Moosewood cookbooks. The Golden Cheddar soup is a particular favorite, although my husband prefers his soups with MEAT in them. The recipe for teriyaki sauce on grilled fish is delicious with salmon.

I am not much of a cook. I like eating well, mostly vegetarian, but don't really enjoy cooking. So if I go to the trouble of following a recipe I want to love my meal. This cookbook has never failed to deliver. All the recipes are great and easy to make. If you love healthy, mostly vegetarian food you will like the recipes in this cookbook! (BTW - I was not as impressed with the Moosewood Low Fat cookbook. The in recipes in that one didn't look as appealing).

This was the first cookbook I bought which I actually used extensively, and the only cookbook I own from which I've actually cooked the vast majority of the recipes. It is perfect not only for vegetarians, but anyone just starting out with their own kitchen. The book not only provides a large variety of relatively easy to cook recipes, it also explains (in appendices) what the various cooking terms mean and what the various ingredients are. The range of recipes also serves as a good introduction to just how wide the possibilities of a vegetarian diet are. As the title promises, these are recipes for everyday use, not the ones to bring out to impress the guests on holidays.

This is the one cookbook that turned me on to the entire Moosewood Restaurant series. I can make pretty much any recipe in the cookbook without worrying about how it will taste when it's done -- everything tastes terrific! I love the fact that I can just use the index when I've got zucchini in the fridge & I'm not sure what to do with it. One warning though -- you're going to want to double most of the recipes. Leftovers are a blessing. :)

I received this for Christmas, and so far every recipe that I've used from this book has been excellent! Flavorful, healthy, vegetarian food that is quick and easy to make. This book is also nice for the single guy or gal as the recipes make moderate amounts - just enough for dinner and a couple of leftovers.

I'm a Cornell grad, and one thing I remember with particular pleasure about my time in Ithaca, NY are those occasional forays down the Hill for lunch or (more likely) dinner at Moosewood, for years one of *the* local standout restaurants. Although not a vegetarian, I try not to eat meat every day of the week; and for a tasty, healthy alternative, there just isn't anything better than Moosewood's recipes. No question that I had to get their cookbook - several of them, actually - before I finally left town.
"Moosewood Restaurant Cooks at Home" begins with two short introductory sections about the use of time and nutritional analysis. The recipes are then grouped into individually introduced sections covering soups, dips, spreads and quick breads, salads and sides, dressings, salsas and sauces, main dish salads, gains, beans, pastas, stews, stir-fries and sautes, fish, sandwiches, filled tortillas, and pizzas, eggs and pancakes, and desserts. The book closes with a pantry list, a guide to ingredients, chapters on preparation and techniques, fresh herbs, menu planning and quantities (including liquid and dry measure and temperature conversion tables - particularly helpful for those of us who live in a "metric system" country); as well as a number of special lists, grouping the featured recipes according to their qualification as nondairy and vegan, kid-pleasers, recipes preparable in 30 minutes or less, and recipes suitable for entertaining, buffets and pot-lucks. What I like most about this book - besides the overall outstanding quality of the recipes and the fact that most of them are very quick and easy to prepare - are the countless little insider tips regarding the shopping for as well as preparation and storage of idividual dishes and their combination with other dishes or ingredients, in addition to the background information on the names, provenance and cultural context of the many Non-Western recipes (not to mention that so many of those recipes are included in the first place). It's hard for me to pick a personal favorite; there are so many ... for soups, I guess I'd pick the Mexican tomato lime soup, for dips the spicy peanut dip, for sides the mushrooms in lemon marinade, for dressings either the creamy pine nut vinaigrette or the lemon sesame dressing, for sauces the hazelnut and red peppers sauce, for main dish salads the sweet potato salad, for grains the herbed lemon pilaf with almonds ... and for salsas, pastas, stews, tortillas, pizzas, eggs, pancakes and desserts, every single one! (Sorry, really can't make up my mind there; it's more a question of mood and, of course, what ingredients I happen to have handy.) But whether you're just cooking for yourself or for family and friends, there should be something for everyone in this book; regardless whether you are vegetarian/vegan or not. Highly recommended! This is the book I use all the time, whether I want to make something familiar, or try something new. It has inspired me to add more healthful things to my diet, and it has also made me realize that one does not have to spend a lot of time in the kitchen to enjoy good, healthy food. The authors present great recipes, as well as menu ideas, pairing suggestions, and provide variations on the recipes. This book has opened up a new world of culinary vegan delights for me and my family.

I bought the "Sundays at Moosewood Restaurant" cookbook a number of years ago and was disappointed with it because the recipes were not consistently good and were often time-consuming or complicated. So I came to this cookbook with a good deal of skepticism. Thus far, however, I've been extremely pleased with it. The recipes are genuinely fast and easy, most of the ingredients are readily available, and the resulting food has been delicious. I've gotten quite a few good ideas from this cookbook and use it often at home. With this cookbook I can make tasty, healthy meals for my family on busy weeknights. Highly recommended!

I own most of Moosewoods books but turn to this one most during the week because the recipes are quicker (less cooking time and/or less prep) than others in the series (say Sunday's at Moosewoods). My personal favorite has to be Curried Tofu and chickpeas. Not only is it quick to prepare, but the final dish is amazingly colorful as well as quite tasty. The entire section on packet cooking is infinitely adaptable. She uses fish in foil packets, but one could do this with tempeh(staying vegetarian) or even with chicken, if there are meat eaters around. I highly recommend this book for people who want to cook more vegetarian food at home, but can't always find the time.

I own most of the Moosewood cookbooks, but I don't use this one nearly as often as I do the earlier books, mostly because the recipes in this one are more limited. Still, there are some great quick vegetarian dishes here that could quickly become favorites. Families especially will appreciate the quick pizza recipes that allow you to choose your "crust": pre-baked shell, French bread, or pita. The Herbed Chevre and Tomato Pizza and the Mushroom and Smoked-Cheese Pizza are both great, although you really don't need a recipe for either. The same is true for the vegetarian antipasto salad - anyone can figure out how to make a salad out of olives, artichoke hearts, beans, roasted red peppers, and cheese. However, sometimes when I want a quick dinner, I can't think on my own. This is when this cookbook comes through.
Some of the more unusual recipes are Curried Fried Rice, Asian Cabbage Slaw, Pasta with Spicy Cauliflower, Sweet Potato Quesadillas, and Fragrant Rice Noodles with Vegetables. Warning: some of these recipes contain fish. Since Moosewood has such an established reputation for vegetarian cuisine, I don't understand why something like Chesapeake Catfish had to be included. As with all of the Moosewood cookbooks, the desserts are competent but unexceptional. In the back, the authors divide their recipes into lists: non-dairy and vegan dishes; recipes that will allow you to spend more time with your guests; "kid pleasers"; dishes suitable for buffets; and 30 minute meals. This is probably the most thoughtful aspect of the book, and I appreciate the effort. You'll also find a fairly comprehensive "Guide to Ingredients" which not only describes some of the more unusual items but also where you are likely to find them. For close to 400 pages of recipes, this cookbook does not seem to have a lot in it. Still, it's worth getting for those recipes that ARE there. Don't make this your only Moosewood cookbook, but certainly include it as part of your collection. (Review Data Last Updated: 2005-11-20 05:52:21 EST)

This is so inventive. I really enjoy all of their books, not just for their creativity but for the diversity of recipes. This is really American cooking. A melting pot of all ethnicities are in this book. I especially liked the Garlic Tomato Soup. It was a Portuguese recipe. Not only was the country of origin credited but it was authentic. I made it for some visiting pals & they swore that it could not have been in an American cookbook. Fact is they keep begging for more.

One of the best of the vegetarian cookbooks, this has delicious recipes (e.g., "Pasta with Greens and Ricotta"), and clear directions for relatively easy vegetarian fare. There's an emphasis on the "fast and easy," and each recipe has an estimated preparation time, often under half an hour. Sometimes these estimates imply a cook with Olympian speed and efficiency, but with experience, preparation time is reduced. For example, "Field Peas with Kale and Sweet Potatoes" requires boiling potatoes, and sauteing onions, kale, and peas. Total time is a reasonable 25 minutes. A nutritional analysis follows each recipe. Field Peas above has 142 calories, 6.9 G protein, 2.3G fat, 24.5 Carbohydrates, 19mg sodium, and 0 mg cholesterol.
There's no particular low-fat emphasis here: Boiled Polenta with Mushrooms and Cheese" has 15.6 g of fat per 8 oz. I am a cookbook fanatic and write a cooking column for a local newspaper. I use this cookbook more than all my other cookbooks combined. I have never made a bad recipe from this book, and many of their dishes are menu staples in our house. Their menu suggestions are right on target and often turn an already delicious homey dish into a company showstopper. I love the Carribean Black Beans with Mango Salso and Golden Spanish Rice. But then, I love just about every recipe in this cookbook. With three little kids to distract me when I cook, the short preparation times are a godsend. I fall at the feet of the Moosewood Collective in gratitude.

I have three requirements for recipes to enter my frequent rotation: that they be healthy, yummy, and, above all, fast and easy. (Is that 4 requirements?) Almost all of the recipes in this book meet those.
This is the cookbook that I use the most. The pages are covered with spills, tearing, falling out. That's the mark of a fine cookbook. Maybe it's time for me to buy another copy. (Review Data Last Updated: 2005-11-20 05:52:23 EST)
