The book was in good shape. It provides more recipes to use if you attempt to follow his diet. After these recipes it was easy to cook foods I was used to in the Ornish diet style which is low or no fat.

I am a big fan of Dr. Ornish and his vegetarian approach to treating and preventing heart disease. When I am trying a new recipe I surround it with simple additions so I can concentrate on the new fare, especially if it includes alot of ingredients. Most of the meal plans in this book are complicated, requiring alot of ingredients for each new item on the menu for that meal. I could not successfully use this book as written, except to try one item at a time.

I've been in tune with Dr. Ornish since about 1997. I had 3 bypasses at that time. Using his simple techniques of eating well (and a lot), moderate exercise and relaxation techniques, I lost 120lbs. in 6 months and kept it off! This man is world renowned in his field and has yet to have any peers. That's right. This is the man that made Dr. Atkins look foolish in a debate on PBS! Dr. Ornish, thank you!

In order for this book to make sense you need to read Dr. Ornish's other book (Eat More, Weigh Less). This book is full of great food that is simple to prepare and very healthy. You won't miss the stuff you leave out.

(Hide Review...)  It works. 90 pounds worth for me
Reviewer Permalink
Ah. Poor soul below me. Don't eat this or that. How about just plain good food and eat all you want of that?

We just got the book. I have been using fat free or almost fat free cooking for a while. My 90 pounds weight loss without even trying proves it has some benefits. I was not unhappy with those 90 pounds however the other half's heart was in serious trouble so I read Ornish and started to cook that way. Very simple and taste filled once you learn the principles and learn your spices. We have made progress.. A LOT. OH is now allowed to exercise a bit. The heart got better and I lost a LOT of weight.

The book is wonderful because it has the methods, tips and hints at my finger tips instead of having to get online and hunt em down I can flip thru them as I want. The recipes are set up seasonal which is great because that is what I should be eating at this time for the best flavor. I visted the produce stand locally and bought local homegrown veggies. Came home and simply flipped the book to spring. They are designed to be models. The recipes are nice but they give me a spring board for creating my own and the book gives me the info to do that. I am not wandering around blind and bemoaning my diet. It isn't one. It is simply good eating. The pantry section helps straighten out and guide your food choices. They don't leave you high and dry to cooking beans or grain. I had to go thru several books or search the net before if I hadn't cooked a bean in a long time or never to find out info on it.

It encourages new choices in produce. Fava beans are on my list now. I don't look at the grocery store choices the same way. It is a handy reference and nice guide. IF you use it correctly. I won't whine one bit. Darn good eating and it teaches you how to cook. You won't have to follow the recipe exactly after you get done reading it. You can make it what you want.

(Hide Review...)  GOOD VALUE FOR YOUR DOLLAR
Reviewer Permalink
Who ever thought food could taste so good and be healthy! There are not a lot of recipes in this book in comparison to many other cookbooks but the variety is endless and there is something for everyone. The critical factor is that the recipes provided here are low in fat and cholesterol, not to mention very tasty. What will make these recipes so appealing, apart rom the health issue, is the simplicity of the recipes. The reader will find everything from Arkansas chili (great for serving to company) to scrumptous carrot cake with tempting creamy cheese frosting - so delicious! With this book, the reader will find value for their dollar and some healthy, nutritious meals for you, your family and friends. Why waste your time and money on junk food when you can eat healthy and enjoy every bite?

A combination of scientific research into healthier living (primarily reversing heart disease but principles apply to any of us folks who want to feel energetic and live healthy lives) and easy to follow no added fat vegetarian recipes that are arranged by menu. This book is a vast improvement over his prior book Eat More, Weigh Less because the recipes are easy to make. In his prior book Ornish was trying to prove that no-added fat vegetarian cooking can be tasty too--so all the recipes are by renowned chefs given these specific parameters--thus they tend to be too complex for those of us who are not gourmet chefs but rather everyday basic cook types.

I read a copy from my library and I am going to buy it. The recipe ingredients are NOT unusual, the preparation is quick and easy, and "number of servings" is usually "4" or "1". The amount of theory and explanation falls well short of the usual ranting and raving about the relative merits of the various diet plans.

So I need to lose a few pounds, AND I WILL, but I refuse to obsess over it. This is easy cooking for a single fellow making one-course meals. There really are more important things to care about in life than food, now that I have my basic nutrition education and a good cook book. What a RELIEF!

I do not have weight problem or dietary restrictions, but loved the book for the great tasting recipes. I recommend the vegetable soups and the great corn bread. A book well worth buying.

I borrowed this book from my local library in the hopes of finding low-fat vegetarian meals that weren't too far off the conventional track. Having both gall stones and a weight problem require me to watch my fat intake, but all too often fat-free receipes are dull. Not so with these. Even my meat-eating husband enjoyed the various bean, vegetable and grain meals. One of our favorites was a stuffed pepper with black bean sauce. We served it with some steamed veggies and followed it with the fat-free carrot cake which was dense and delicious. Preparation time for most of the recipes is not too long, though some are too complicated to think about after a day at the office. Try this one. It's well worth the investment.
