Revision of Sams highest unit netting Visual Basic .NET book! Part of the best-selling TY in 24 Hours series, this book reaches blue-collar coders on the verge of jumping to .NET programming. Completely updated for MS's "Everett" release, this book is 100% .NET - no messy legacy/beta code to muddle through. The author, James Foxall, has readers writing Visual Basic .NET applications within the first 50 pages of the book. Visual Basic .NET is available as part of Microsoft's Visual Studio .NET suite of developer tools ($1,079 to $2,499) or as a standalone product ($109 before MS rebates). When Visual Studio released in 2001, adoption was limited-especially when comparing book sales on VB 6 to VB.NET. Now that Visual Studio is moving out of the "early adopter" stage and into general acceptance by the bulk of the developer audience, use of Visual Basic, the most highly used programming language in the world, will migrate from VB 6 to VB.NET. Teach Yourself Visual Basic .NET in 24 Hours provides readers with 24 structured lessons with step-by-step guidance to real-world programming tasks including Windows and Web applications. Each chapter includes practice exercises, tips, notes, and cautions providing easy-to-understand advice on how to start programming quickly. Sidebars provide more experienced readers with tips that will ease their migration from Visual Basic 6 to Visual Basic .NET. James Foxall, MCSD, is VP of Tigerpaw Software, Inc. a Microsoft Certified Solution Provider (MCSP) specializing in commercial database applications. He is responsible for management of all Windows application development, and is an authority on application interface and behavior standards of applications for the Microsoft Windows and Office environments. In addition to being a well-known book author, he contributes to several journals and magazines, speaks internationally, teaches college level courses on Visual Basic, and has been featured in news shows, trade publications, and newspaper articles for his technology expertise.

This book is so well written, if you are just starting out with VB, then this book is a must. Where my tutor does not make sense, James Foxall does. James you are a genius, Thank you.
So this book is a must, you don't need to think about it, just buy it. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-18 10:06:10 EST)

I have had many years in IT. I wanted to understand what .net was about and VB (.net) to get through the brochure speak and be able to manage developments in the .net environment effectively.
This book was excellent. Taking each lesson in turn, the pace and instruction was clear and exact. At the end of the 24 hours I more than satsified my aims. I now have a good grounding in vb.net and understand the .net environment much better. Well done to James Foxall (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-06 19:40:12 EST)

The title could rather be given as sams teach yourself VB.NET "for" 8 hours....All what has been presented here can be mastered in just 8 hours. This book lacks essence in conveying the concepts. It does not also cover all parts of VB.NET. The author could have dedicated some more topics on ADO.NET and database programming.
This book sounds good to novices in VB.NET but a money waste for experienced programmers. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-06 19:40:12 EST)

This is an excellent book and Yes, you can learn to program in Visual Basic.Net in 24 hours. This book gives you the details the other books leave out. The book flows well and builds a solid foundation. This is better then the college text I am using for VB.Net. Buy it, you won't be sorry!

Great beginner book - incorporates a bit a humor throughout to keep things interesting. Nice book to transition from VBA to VB .NET.
Errata is posted on authors page as well as user forum. The book also acclimates you to the Visual Studio IDE very well. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-06 19:40:12 EST)

I'm a Cobol and PL1 programmer with 20 years experince in the IT industry. I wanted to make the transition to newer technologies, including VB.NET. This meant I had to start understanding Object Oriented programming as well as the VB.NET syntax and what it can do.
This book is GREAT in the sense that it takes you step by step through VB.NET features. Halfway though the book I was confidently adding stuff to the exercises I had learnt earlier in the book. I can see that the book may be too 'simple' for experienced VB & VB.NET programmers but don't believe that is the target market for this book anyway. This book is pitched at the beginner programmer and achieves what it sets out do to. It gets you going. Well done, James, and Thanks. AJ. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-03-10 11:23:58 EST)

At first glance this book looks great like you are "jumping in with both feet" to VB.NET. However, if you have any background whatsoever in programming the lack of detailed information about key topics can be very irritating. If you are someone who has very little experience and wants to make a simple windows app in VB.NET this might be what you are looking for...if you are a professional coder looking to learn VB.NET don't waste your time with this book! Great for first timers new to visual studio 2003....not so great for everyone else

There was no indication that this product was not available and when expecting to receive notification that it was shipped, I received notice that it was not only not being shipped, but was unavailable and would not be recieved, EVER.

I am a part time programmer, making the transition from Access VBA to VB.Net. I don't have time to code in notepad and want to use all the productivity tools available (read Visual Studio 2003). This book gave me the basics for text boxes, combo boxes (big differences) etc. and provided good real world examples. Also the downloaded code worked and was easy to follow.
Great job. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-07 13:06:46 EST)

Great introduction to VB .NET and the Visual Studio IDE. I am a novice MS Access developer migrating to Visual Studio .NET. This books is an excellent quick start for devloping with VB .NET. But don't expect to get in depth. It's just a primer, but well worth it if that's what you need. You will need to continue learning with other books. Also, the DVD-ROM 60 day trial version of Visual Studio is great. I'm going to buy the full version when done.

Every once in a long while, a great book comes along that forces even someone like me to post a public opinion. This book unlike a lot of other "great" books takes you step by step and actually show you "HOW it is done" and not just tell you what you are to do.
After trying another VB.NET Beginners book that was highly touted on the internet I almost gave up. I came accross this book on the shelf of Borders just by chance This is a sample of how these kinds of books should be written THANKS MR. FOXALL !!!!!!!! If you just starting out with VB.net then this is a good book to start out with. A well written book that keeps your interest and presents its subject matter in a straightforward, easy to understand manor. Each lesson builds on the previous lesson enabling the beginner to get a grasp of the subject matter quickly and easily as well as build a good foundation for more advanced books. Excellent book for the beginner.

The problem with this books is ironically due to the success of his others. This book is a warmed-over version, and does not address the sticky issues of .NET
