This book, like all the other Eyewitness books, was awesome. It provided so much information about seeing the U.S. Whether looking for tourist attractions, general information, facts about each state, or hotel and restaurant suggestions, this book provides it all - with tons of pictures to boot.

The book is a great review of the best places from a very big country, it gives you history and a lot of information to travel around and to have a big picture of this country.

This is a great book. My friend has one. Once I saw his book and read it, I decided to have my own one. I just arrived in US for 6-months training. Everything in US is new and attractive for me. This book helped me know US more quickly.

(Hide Review...)  Great help for planing a cross country trip
Reviewer Permalink
This is an excellent guide for those who want to sample what the United States has to offer. It is an excellent place to start especially if you are only going to be traveling through a lot of places. If you are going to someplace for a week this book will not be helpful and you should get the regional guides. Overall planning a cross country trip it gives lots of advice on cities as well as small out of the way places that would be fun to see. Great addition to a travel book collection.

(Hide Review...)  Only useful if you are not intending to actually go there

At last count, I have travelled to 48 countries, and I have bought guides for most of them from either Rough Guide, Lonely Planet or Footprint. I thought I'd try a new brand of travel guide for the USA as from reading the other reviews here, most people are not particularly happy with either the coverage or accuracy for the USA. However, this has to be the worst guide I have ever bought for content. Yes, it has lots of nice pictures and yes, it has some cross-section cut-throughs of major buildings, but to be honest most of these places have more thorough guides when you actually get to the building if you want more information of, say, the different rooms in a Church. The number of hotels, bars and restuarants recommended is truly worthless for the weight of the book. For example, I just returned from 5 days in San Francisco. I took this guide. I read all of the 6 pages it has to offer on the city center on the flight over, and from that point onwards it was just a dead weight to have to carry. In the end I left it in my hotel room. For one of the cities in the USA that prides itself in the number and diversity of eateries, the coverage of San Francisco gave me no insight whatsoever. Similarly, I looked at the coverage of New York (where I live) and this is nothng special either. The only use for these books is looking at the nice pictures of the places you could go if you choose to travel somewhere, but don't bother taking it with you. This is absolutely NOT a backpackers or true travellers guide.

My work has provided me with the opportunity to travel a good bit. I am the type of person who wants to get a working background for my destinations, both in terms of history and geographic layout. Because I work, I don't have a great deal of time to spend reading and studying different, often lengthy, travel guides before or during my trips.

Because these guides are concise, beautifully illustrated, relatively compact, and impeccably organized, I cannot recommend highly enough the Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Travel Guides! The DK Eyewitness Travel Guide is THE guide I buy for every destination. Not only do I get a quick history and background of the destination, but I also will be provided with a visual guide to everything. The visual detail is really what sets the DK Eyewitness Travel Guides apart.

The street maps of common destination points are drawn in dimensional detail so you will visually recognize when you "get there." The regional maps are colorful and concise. And the drawings associated with attractions like museums allow the traveler who is short on time to quickly see the best of the museum within the time the traveler has to spend.

Each DK Eyewitness Travel Guide has a good summary section in the back with practical information about where to eat, where to sleep, what to do, and how to get around.

While I may supplement the DK Eyewitness Travel Guide with others for a more detailed travel guide, the other guide is only more to read, not more to see. Buy the DK Eyewitness Travel Guide first for any destination.

The Rough Guide series has proven to be the best choice when traveling; this edition is no different. I recently completed a six week auto journey of the Western US--from South Dakota through California and finally back to my home in North Carolina. I couldn't have had a better guide to point me along on the journey. The information is honest and the attitude contemporary. The book covers the US national parks at the same level of detail and high energy as the country's grandest cities. I have--and will be--consistenly be traveling with the highest caliber guidebook on the planet. Very nice work and my congratulations to the Rough Guide authors & staff.

(Hide Review...)  Mediocre at Best

This guide does not include half the details I was looking for. It lacks on historical background, demographics, maps, neighborhood information and totally leaves out several cities. It lacks major cities in the details that it does cover. I had high expectations, and was left very dissapointed. I felt this guide was mediocre at best.

The DK Eyewitness travel guides are really great: very lively and colorful, lots of pictures, easy to read, useful information, a lot of original drawings to describe best the must-see monuments, etc.
This travel guide covers all 50 states, and is quite comprehensive for major cities such as NY, DC, Philly, Boston, Frisco, LA, etc. It has also a good coverage of smaller cities, but don't expect to have all the details. They just tell you what's really interesting to see. Listing of good restaurants/hotels/hostels at the end of each chapter.
Good for those who want to spend only one day in these cities.
Only problem: For each attraction they tell you if there is an admission fee, but not the amount.
But this travel guide is really fun to read, and it proved to be very useful when I visited major U.S. cities.

(Hide Review...)  THE GREATEST TRAVEL GUIDE BOOKS SERIES EVER
Reviewer Permalink
The first time I saw a DK travel guide on a book shop I'w dazzled and amazed. Never before had I read so many information inside a single guide. Then I started purchasing other titles on the series: St. Petesburg, South Africa, Germany, Mexico, Florida, Greek Islands, Japan etc etc etc and now I've got more than 15 titles on the shelf. The DK guides are fully illustrated, with astonishing cutaways and useful information about every detail of a trip: from places to stay and eat to places to shop and currency and transportation. I also recommend the titles EUROPE, USA, GERMANY, SPAIN and so on, dedicated to a continent or a country. They're not as complete as the ones written to a single city, but surely they bring you enough information not to get lost anywhere. It's a must buy.
