Even though I did not really use this book for the photography information, it has great suggstions of places to visit and good directions on how to get there. I highly recommend a trip to Sentinel Dome, what an amazing view from the top.

Whether you're an amateur or a pro, this book has a lot to offer. It's loaded with information on how and when to take fabulous pictures while you're in Yosemite. It's well organized and it's easy to read. It's loaded with beautiful photographs that serve as good examples.
It's small and can be easily packed with your stuff as you venture into the valley. A must-have for those who are visiting the park and want to take great pictures! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-25 02:43:45 EST)

There are many glowing reviews of this book and it does provide the goods on how and where to go to get good shots. The maps (5) and sections are also quite simple to read. In addition, the sequential numbering of the points of interest is a help.
I was disappointed to find so much coverage of photographic technique. While some technique discussions directly relate to the unique character of Yosemite (for example talking about color and the lack of it in granite) most of it feels more like filler, and indeed makes it harder to navigate to the sections of interest. The book also lacks an index so the only useful navigation tool is the brief table of contents. Without that table of contents it would be hard to find any particular section and even with it, you're going to have to resort to man-made book marks to find what you want. For example if Pohono Bridge and Fern Spring caught your fancy but you didn't remember to book mark it or remember its number you'll have to resort to scanning all of the maps and/or all of the numbered interest points because despite the page of content, there is no entry for this viewpoint in the table of contents (and remember there is no index). I would prefer the maps be all together at the front or back so that it would work better as a reference book. I would also have liked to see some more examples of "out of the way" hikes to desirable vistas. Finally, I would like the author to have provided some sort of "effort vs eye-appeal" rating to help me focus on which sunrise locations are the "not to miss" areas and which are "ok". Perhaps the author can even suggest a few itineraries. These more useful things could replace the "choosing film" techniques section and others like it that are a bit basic and detract from the otherwise good "where and when" information. I'm tempted to get Harold Davis's book "The Photographer's Guide to Yosemite & the High Sierra" just to make a comparison. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-22 05:41:25 EST)

I took the trip of a lifetime earlier this month to Yosemite and San Francisco, and it was wonderful. Photography is a big hobby for me, and I spent every second looking for photo opportunities. I read that this was a great book to have and bought it before the trip. It is available at most of the gift shops in the park, but you'll love having ahead of time if you want to make some plans before you go. It's not much cheaper here than in the park, though- maybe $1. Anyway, this was an invaluable tool and I used it to plan most of my hiking and sightseeing while in Yosemite. I also had a PhotoSecrets book for San Francisco, but it wasn't nearly as helpful as this book. This is a great investment to make sure you get the pictures you want on your trip to Yosemite National Park.

This is the first book I've ever bought to prepare for a trip. I usually spend endless hours searching out tips from links on websites and then printing them--now I look for a photographer's guide first! Michael Frye has given every tip on 'what, when, where, and how', including which filters to use for problem situations or enhancement. This guide is equally beneficial for those travelers looking for the perfect time and place for wonderment--those special spots not marked by signs with arrows and time tables. And the images are awe inspiring. Definitely something to keep out on the coffee table when you get back home.

Yosemite is a frequent photgraphic destination for me. I use Michael's book on each trip. There is so much to see at Yosemite that a plan is required. This book not only directs you to the best photo locations, but tells you precisely the time of year to get the best results. Highly recommended.

I used this for my first visit to Yosemite. It was very accurate and a great guide even if you're not a photographer. You should use it in conjunction with the free trail guide for the off road hikes. The trail guide has difficulty ratings for the hikes. We went to the top of Vernal falls and it was more difficult than the impression I got from the book. That was my fault not the author's. Great photos in the book too.

This book is great, and we were so glad that we purchased this book before arriving in the park. We read it before our trip, and marked down the hikes we wanted to do, and found great spots to drive to as well! We went to almost ever spot in this book, and got wonderful pictures! Even the rainbow in the waterfall picture came out perfect. We were so glad we found this book, because it made finding everything much easier! Definitely purchase this book!

This was a great book for our recent trip to Yosemite and I highly recommend it. It sent us to the perfect viewpoints at the perfect times so the light was just right. It saved us a lot of time because we didn't have to try to figure it all out on our own. Even if you're not interested in taking photos, it's a great resource to help you figure out the best times to see the sights in Yosemite, and it contains beautiful photographs. It made us want to return to the park in the winter. Every book store and gift shop had stacks of this book, so it's obviously very popular. We thought it was great and kept it handy the entire trip.

This is very useful book - not only if you a serious photographer. It will take you to many amazing places in Yosemite - no matter whether you wanna go there to take your best pictures or just admire the view. It is small enough to have it fit in your backpack when hiking, and very rich in Yosemite info. I love it and it's highly recommended.

I go to Yosemite evey 2nd year or so to shoot landscapes for a week. I saw this guide on my first trip. The author lived in the park for years, and has shot it in all seasons and weather conditions. I think there is literally no aspect of photgraphy in Yosemite which is not clearly addressed. If you want to shoot good pictures in and around Yosemete, this book will cut down planning and running around to minimum and guide you to some of the best photos you've ever taken. I cannot say enough good things about it.

The book is well organized and easy to follow. Helps a lot to determine the time to visit certain points for best pictures. Also has some basic technical advise for "vacation photographer" like me. Anyway it is not a book intended to teach photography but to help enhance your photo experience, specially if you are on a tight schedule.

I used this several times a day to plan my photo sessions. It saved me time and wasted energy by making it easy to plan which sites to photograph at certain times of the day.
Although they sell this book all over the park, Ansel Adams gallery included, you really need it before you get there to plan things out and have a good feel for the park without being there yet. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-06-30 04:50:32 EST)

I relied heavily on this guide on my recent trip to Yosemite to determine what, and when I was going to visit each site. I couldn't believe the difference just a few hours made in determining what the best time of day was to shoot each highlighted area. It's a great value, and very well written.

We visited Yosemite in July and took this book along. It provided tons of useful information about where and when to get great shots, and directions to each spot. It was very useful, and at the price is also a real bargain.
While there, I did a Photo Walking Tour with a pro photographer who works in Yosemite, arranged through the Ansel Adams Gallery. To my surprise, during our hike she pulled a well-worn copy of *this* book out of her backpack and cited it as a good reference for shooting photos in Yosemite -- so that would be another helpful endorsement for it. During my first visit to Yosemite this book was a lifesaver. I expected that the pull-outs, parking lots, and viewpoints in the Yosemite Valley would be well signed. They are not well signed. I would certainly not have been able to find or photograph many of the spectacular features of the Yosemite valley without the guidance of this book (okay, I probably could have managed, but the book made it MUCH easier). It was easily worth the price. The information about where and when (time of day as well as season) to shoot particular features was spot on from my limited experience. The photographs in the book are nice and give you an idea of what you will find at each viewpoint. The size of the book is great as it fit nicely in my camera backpack.
That said buyers should be aware that the main focus of this book is photography in Yosemite valley. Yosemite NP is a big place with many things to see and do. This book has extensive coverage of the Yosemite valley and highlights the best stuff in other areas of the park. Its treatment of hiking trails is brief as it hits only the highlights again. It is a great book at helping you photograph the amazingly beautiful Yosemite valley and the best stuff in the rest of Yosemite NP. If you are looking for information about less traveled spots in Yosemite NP or hiking trails then you should look elsewhere. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-01-03 05:47:37 EST)

I recently returned from a trip to Yosemite. I have to admit that I carried this book with me in my camera bag. It was literally that valuable that I did not leave the lodge without it. There are detailed instructions on where to go, when to go and how long it will take you to get there. The hiking instructions are right on, down to which switchbacks to follow. I especially liked the information on times to shoot the photos. The books tells you "Best Months" and "Best Light" for each location. The author also includes helpful informational topics, such as "Photographing Waterfalls", "Photographing Rainbows", and "Night Photography". Advanced photographers will not find this information useful, however, the novice will. In summary, this is the best $8.95 you can spend if you want great Yosemite photos!

I am a serious amature photographer, who know his stuff, so I was a little bent out of shape when a friend gave me this book. I have been on many pack trips into the high country, and shot many a roll of film, I do not need a guide book on how to photograph Yosemite! I was wrong, this is an excellent guide, with information usefull to all skill levels. The author does a great job giving details and descriptions of where to go for the best shots, including time of day and season. I also recomemend the book "ACROSS This is an excellent book for discovering how to photograph Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park. Descriptions and directions are all first rate, easy to follow and easy to find. Although it seems to be a bit more tailored to film photographers and is in a since a bit dated in that area, the rest of the information in the book is first rate. Highly recommended. I also recomemend "ACROSS THE HIGH LONESOME" a great read about the high country!

This book is a treat. Every page is in full color, with plenty of inspiring pictures to whet your appetite. But the really valuable aspect is that Frye describes exactly where, when, and how he got each shot. Frye is quite generous in sharing what he's learned about many locations in Yosemite during each season; he's lived there for over 20 years, so he knows what he's talking about. There's also a very practical discussion of photographic technique, yet the whole volume is remarkably compact for portability.
Highly recommended! (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-02 06:59:29 EST)

This is how a photo guide should be: excellent photos, detailed maps, ideal time of day, optimal season. Additionally it is compact and reasonably priced. Highly recommended.

I love this book!! Thank-you to Michael Frye for taking on this project. I hope he goes to other national parks and writes more books. Michael not only shows photos and tells where to get them, he goes into great detail about what time of day, type of film, use of filters, depth of field, exposure... everything a "professional photographer-in-the-making" can use.

...It has illustrations for all kinds of photographic techniques including advice on seasons, film, lenses needed, important time of days etc. Definitely worth buying it. You can finish reading this book in couple of hours in car while somebody else is driving. i did the same. In my opinion it would really help if the authur included some kind of readmap you can follow so that u can be at right places at right time. (although considering the vastness of yosemite, i am sure it will be a difficult job) All in all great little book. i would recommend to buy it in advance...to take full advantage of authur's suggessions.

Michael Frye has done a wonderful job guiding the photographer be they a novis or pro through most of Yoesmities jewels. His experience and wisdom of the art of photography are real treasures that make this book a "must" for anyone traveling to the area. Yosemites beauity and tips to capture it in pictures are explained in simple yet profound detail.
