(Hide Review...)  Two Weeks Will Not Be Enough
Reviewer Permalink
Plans for our two-week road trip to the National Parks of southern Utah were rather chaotic -- lots of bits and pieces from several guidebooks were difficult to organize. But, thanks to Laurent Martres' book, I think we now have a much better chance of being in the right place at the right time to truly enjoy the sights. The photographic illustrations are really magnificent.

(Hide Review...)  Beware False Kiva
Reviewer Permalink
I loved this book...however. On a trip to Moab 3 wks ago I hiked to the location of False Kiva as described in the book and originally described by Tom Till. It was a very windy, gusty day with gusts over 45 mph. I nearly pulled a Thelma & Louise without the T-Bird under me. With the wind and final assault up the slickstone, death was brought into the equation & I aborted. Also, I got lost for an hour and everything I owned was coated in sand. Avoid this recommendation when there is even a hint of wind. This advice comes from someone with 55 missions over North Viet Nam.

I already own the 1th Edition and used it extensively to find rare to be seen places in the Southwest. I am German and visit the Southwest once or twice a year and found this book to be invaluable. Easy to follow directions, great images, good advice. You don't need any other guide to see all the best places (which no one else finds).

One of several books by this author and I think that the information here will be very helpful in getting great photos on vacation. The biggest problem in getting a good photo is the location. Having a starting point is invaluable and then the only variable is the weather. Having photos in the book to illustrate the locations is a major plus.

(Hide Review...)  Simply the best photographic guides to this amazing scenery
Reviewer Permalink
If you're planning a tour of the American Southwest these brilliant books are simply the best possible guide to what to photograph, and how. In three volumes Martrès guides you to all the photographic highlights of Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico. At the well known tourist spots he tells you what and when to shoot for best results, but he's also not afraid to take you off the beaten path to some less frequently visited scenic gems.

I've just completed a photographic holiday following roughly the traditional "grand circle" route, and I couldn't have got some of my most successful shots without these books.

The author provides consistent, detailed instructions for each location, including guidance on lenses and timing. Sometimes he even tells you which rock to stand on! Follow his instructions carefully, and you'll usually get good results, although some instructions require careful interpretation.

It's also great fun shouting "snap!" when you realise the only other souls in some lonely location are also clutching a copy of the same book.

All three volumes have recently been updated, with high quality colour photos throughout, and a comprehensive index of locations including ratings for accessibility and scenic and photographic value, invaluable if a tight schedule means making difficult choices.

I'm already planning my next trip using volume 3! Highly recommended.

It's dicey to purchase a book without putting your hands on it and turning the pages. I always expect that the book will be less than the reviews. Not so with this product. It is a great addition to any photographer's toolkit. If you are visiting the Utah SW buy this book. It's been updated with a few essential GPS co-ordinates but not enough. I'll fix that when we travel there next fall. It is especially valid with information on how to get to the locations it talks about. Convinced us that we should take the truck and not just the SUV for better access to "off track" locations. The technical advise is solid. The awareness needed for great photos is always a great reminder for all of us. Photographing is not just technical ability, new cameras can take care of that for you, it's about "seening the shot". Sometimes landscapes are better with shadows, shilouttes, or people. This book encourages you to take the time to find your shot. A great photographer sees what others don't. This book will help you both technically and artistically.

We used this throughout our vacation. Especially helpful were the road and trail ratings. We found them to be very true to our own experiences. This was by far the most helpful guide we had... even if you can't be everywhere for the 'golden hour' of photography.

I bought all three books from the series Photographing the Southwest by author Laurent Martres. I'm preparing for 2 weeks trip to USA next year. I found these books very useful. All provide very valuable information about the best time and conditions for all the people having passion for taking fotographs at most famous places all over Southwest. Simply must have.

(Hide Review...)  Not just for photographers; scenic drives and hikes

This set of guides contains just the right amount of information to selectively choose your next Southwest driving or hiking destination:
1. Full color pictures of destinations
2. A rating system for the scenic value of the destination and hiking and driving difficulty getting there
3. An appropriate level of description, including directions
4. An overview map showing the destinations

I highly enjoyed my previous visit to Southern Utah, but found it hard to know where to go with the limited time I had. Now armed with this series of books, I am prepared to make the best of my next trip. Of course, you will need road maps and trail maps, but the author mentions several great resources for these as well, some of which I was not aware of. Thanks to the author for putting together these great resources!

This is the best book I've found for someone traveling to Southern Utah. It covers where to go and what to see, what you absolutely can't miss, and what you can pass up if you're short on time. Great directions, pictures and even occasional GPS coordinates. Oh, yeah, and of course - photography advice too!

This book is a must have if you want to see the beauty of southern Utah.
It will take you places that are truely magnificent. It suggests what to see and how to get there. Directions are clear and concise. The author relates his experiances and informs you of the difficulties that may be encountered on the road. This book and its companion Volume-2 Arizona,
are the only ones you will ever need. Buy them, get off the main highways do some hiking and enjoy!!!!

This book really turned out to be very useful in planning and then actually doing my recent trip in October of 2006. As it turned out, due to rain, many places I planned on seeing were not accessible due to washed out roads and mud, but i was always able to come up with a good "plan B" using the book.

I really don't think my trip would have been near as much fun - both photographically and just seeing some cool stuff - without having had the book.

The weak area seemed to be in the Arches area. Better discriptions of where the sun might be at various times of the year would have been helpful and would have saved some hiking!

Over-all, the advice was dead on and I am so glad a friend recommended this book.
