I've been camping in Maine for a few weeks... Mainers expect you to have one of these. They say "get out your DeLorme's" not "do you have a map?" Some people I've met have pointed me to the right page without looking at the back.
The details in this atlas are great! All of Maine's public reserve land and campground are clearly marked. If you are trying to do some real camping in some remote areas, get this map. This is a must if you are going to be doing anything outdoors in ME. I never thought I'd say a map is fun to read. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-30 04:16:32 EST)

After reading reviews on Amazon, I bought this book with a couple of others for my sister-in-law who moved to Maine. Within a week of moving to Maine, they got lost and used this atlas to find their way! They really like it.

This is the bible of maps of Maine. And most, if not all, other states have a version available. The first time you use it will probably make the purchase worthwhile.

This is a good map if your going to Maine. The only thing I think they should add is more street maps of the towns down the coast. We had to buy them when we got there.

I strongly recommend this product for anyone visiting Maine and unfamiliar with roads and highways in that state. We found the Atlas very helpful in finding the shortest routes and alternate routes over traffic-clogged route 1.

I would not want to be without this map when referring to locations throughout the state of Maine. The gazetteer is an invaluable resource.

We bought this atlas a few weeks before a two week Maine vacation we had planned. We had an idea of a few different places we were going to visit and didn't want to get lost along the way.
When we got there however, we realized how valuable this atlas actually is. We traveled all over the state, from interstate to highway to dirt roads. The scale of the maps is absolutely amazing. There's no way you can get lost with this bad boy and you can explore every nook and cranny of Maine. Well worth the money and then some. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-06-24 05:34:24 EST)

The Maine Atlas & Gazetteer by DeLorme should also be known as "The Maine Bible." Every Mainer should own one. All too often I've tried those web sites that are supposed to give you driving directions, and inevitably they give me an error message saying "that location was not found" when I try to get directions to places in rural Maine. You'll never have to worry about that with the Gazetteer. Every Maine city, town, village or plantation is listed in this book, no matter how obscure it is.

This goes for any of the gazetters. These books are indispensable. I have them for many states and refer to them constantly when traveling. I photograph lighthouses and landscapes. They have the lighthouses marked and many tiny roads. I've used the one in Northern California to navigate through the deep forests on logging roads to get to the ocean and never have had an error. If I find myself in error it has always been my mistake in reading the map not the map. They are the perfect detail for the size package. I also use the Topo 4.0 Wow! I don't carry a laptop in the field though.

If you are visiting Maine and want to explore, this is the only reference possible. It is updated every year to show washed out roads, backwoods detours and detail that is essential to getting in and out of the Northern Wilderness.

The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer is a must-have book if you are going to accompany Henry David Thoreau on his three trips through the Maine woods during the nineteenth century. This way, I was there following the Penobscot , crossing streams, travelling large and small ponds, going up falls and down, stopping at tiny 'villages." This is really an exciting trip. Wish I could have been there back then.

In a field of few, it's the best map book of Maine. Lacks the appeal of the original all-green edition
