DeLorme's Atlas and Gazetteer Series is America's most popular line of recreational maps! Each atlas covers an individual state in its entirety with detailed, full-color topographic maps. Detail includes back roads, hidden lakes, boat ramps, hiking trails, campgrounds, public lands, forests, wetlands and more. And, the Gazetteer sections feature page after page of information on places to go and things to do. These atlases are year-round favorites with outdoors enthusiasts and anyone who likes to leave the main roads behind.

This does not show many of the back roads (un-improved...), and is not very topographic (mountains...). VERY CONFUSING to try and follow!
I "HIGHLY" recommend the!- Benchmark Colorado Road & Recreation Atlas (any state!) Excellent detail/topographic, and most of the trails...! Benchmark Colorado Road & Recreation Atlas (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-16 04:57:32 EST)

These DeLorme maps are great. I plan on visiting the state of Colorado next fall and do some hiking while I am there and these look great. The details of the roads and all campsites are awesome. I plan to purchase more of these of other states.

Very poor details compared to the Colorado Road and Recreation Atlas. Do not even use it.

We used the Missouri Gazeteer for a spring camping trip to the Ozarks. We wanted to explore out of the way places, and knew that good maps would be invaluable. The date on our Gazeteer was 2002, which might explain some of the incongruencies, but I have to wonder how much back roads change in 5 years. We followed one that took us to where we wanted to go, but it ended another half mile away in a camping spot. We would have LOVED to have known about that, and also to have known that the road did NOT continue through as marked on the map. I guess that they still want you to have a sense of adventure!

I have nothing but praise for DeLorme. We have purchased and used 5 states now (Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Colorado, and Arizona), and each has enabled us to really enjoy some spontaneous vacations. I plan to buy one for each state I visit.

Other sites had cheaper atlases, but their shipping was exhorbitant! Amazon had the lowest overall price. The atlas was received promptly, as described. DeLorme makes very useful road atlases that show what's right there on the ground as you're travelling. They're the most accurate atlases I own, and I have over a dozen atlases for different states. DeLorme's atlases have great detail and show most roads, unlike the usual road maps that show just interstates and major paved highways. Some DeLorme atlases have a printing defect with missing pages. Make sure the seller has a return policy to cover this problem. The WA atlas I purchased was perfect, so no problems.

I was hoping this would be as excellent as the Maine Gazeteer, but it isn't. It is a topographical map, which is fine if all you want to do is hike mountains. But if you want street names and town names better grab a magnifying glass. Tiny print and roads drawn in pastel colors is not really helpful. Disappointing.

I'm planning a trip to California shortly, but I lived there for many years as a child. The Delorme for Northern California joins my collection of about 10 other Delorme maps for other areas I have lived and visited. Being a birdwatcher, we in the birding community often give directions to birds by Delorme pages. Makes life SO much easier. Although it doesn't have every little street in some areas, it does have MUCH more detail than the average road map, and makes it wonderful when you're like me and just want to head off in a general direction to scout for bird territory, but not necessarily follow the same path back. Love Delorme Atlases... wouldn't travel without them.

There just is not a better book or piece of information to have than a state atlas when travelling. With the atlas, you are able to get (off the beaten path), see the "hard to get to" areas of the United States, and actually get back on track again. You will do all of this and never get lost!
These books are amazing. Not only do they have all the gravel roads but even the dirt roads! Buy the Atlas, you won't be sorry. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-08-08 04:57:45 EST)

Hi All I am a disabled traveler and Started out in Missouri and ended up in Arizona.
I have used many of deLormes Atlas and Gazetteer's, I dont know why this Missouri Atlas does not have the RANGE AND TOWNSHIP MARKINGS ALSO THE ELEVATIONS???? Maybe it cost too much these days to include that. I have a 1999 Arizona Atlas by DeLorme that has all that included I was Disapointed with this book, print is smaller and does not show any of the city streets??? \ does an OK job for the county roads, that does help.. But GPS tic marks could be bigger or bolder. overall it might get you where you want to go. I guess so I am not lost in the woods or on some old county road..lol Good luck to all and to DeLorme include these things next time around..ok? (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-08-08 04:57:45 EST)

For years I refused to buy this road atlas because it got the name and length of the 1970's era street I live on wrong. In fact, I noted several errors within the vicinity that I'm most familiar with. That said, it's still the only serious contender for a reasonably decent compendium of local maps. I finally broke down and bought a copy because so many birding and canoeing resources reference the "Delorme" as it's usually called locally. It's no real alternative to having very detailed USGS topo maps of any area of intense interest, but I'll give it credit for being a reasonably compact, (by large, bulky, car use standards), version of a state map. It's position is between that of the free Dept of Transportation maps and the highly detailed local maps that can be purchased from convience stores for road use, and from the better outdoor provision and recreational companies for topographical and lake and shore details. For what it is, it's definitely worth the price. Just don't expect it to be the last local map you'll buy. It's a compromise all the way around. But, sometimes a compromise is the best solution. That said, I went ahead and got the one for SC, and will probably get the one for VA as well.

We needed to locate some undeveloped property in the Show Low Pines area. This map and the internet were great in assisting us. We use our Colorado and Wyoming ones all the time. They are a great resource for people who like to do beyond the end of the road!

the delorme gazeteer series is perfect for people who want to wander off of the main roads. my wife and i like to point the car as whim sees fit. the map has backroads with enought detail to let us find our wish and our way back. essential for indirect travel. also has marked 4wd trails to unknown wonders, as well as a smattering of known wonders (waterfalls, museums, fishing, camping...). not a replacement for usgs quads, but will make the travel to your hike more fun. if you are interested in exploring a state, or some portion thereof, the gazetteer series is an invaluable tool.

While visiting family in Encino, a portion of Los Angeles, I was curious to know what exactly the San Fernando Valley looked like in relation to the rest of L.A. A trip to the Encino Library left me only partially satisfied. But, by purchasing the Southern & Central California Atlas and Gazetteer, I finally understood the boundaries of the valley, the configuration of the mountains separating the two major portions of L.A., and the logic of travelling "West" to Encino from the rest of L.A. on the 101 without falling into the Pacific Ocean. This is a great resource for anyone wanting to know more about the geologic and geocultural configuration of the southern half of California. Should I find an equal curiosity about the northern half of the state, I'll be sure to buy the companion volume. And some day, I'll even donate my copy to the Encino Public Library (which is a great place, by the way; they just didn't have this terrific atlas).

They have done a good job on this Gazatter. I has been a few years since it was updated but can get you where you are going. They give Latitude and Longitude in Decimal and Degree, hour & minutes, which is a plus.

I bought these for use in backpacks and bugout kits. They are enormous measuring 11 x 16 inches. Perhaps not enormous, but a pretty large reference for a backpack. Perhaps NOT ideally suited for those looking for a pocket reference.
They are printed on nice think paper and soft bound to a thick cover. These should last for some time. I agree with what others have commented that the roadways are not as prominent as a roadmap may be, but the roadways ARE pretty clear. No less prominent than the other features the map illustrates, such as terrain and landmarks. Where the AAA map mostly portrays roadways the USGS map portrays terrain. The DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer seems to treat both equally. If one is just looking for a roadmap, they may find these a bit bulky. If you ever have to take to the "back roads" or find yourself in unfamallier territory - then this is the map for you. I will be buying more of these fine maps. I found the maps useful for detailed travel in a small area. Of course they are MUCH better than the normal road map. Elevation information gives you an idea of what you can expect. My two complaints are: (1)the elevation information is difficult to see -- finding the actual elevation number to go with a line is very hard as there are few numbers and they are not highlighted to make them easier to find; and,(2) additional information about the type of road surface would be helpful for the adventurous.

This atlas, like all the Delorme atlases of the states, shows in clear detail every possible feature of the areas: roads down to dirt paths, rivers and streams, railroads, and the contours and elevations of the land. Placenames are thoroughly listed, as are parks, campgrounds, and recreation sites for hunting, fishing, hiking, and biking. This is an excellent all-around reference work.

It would be good if Amazon reviewers of maps and atlases used the standard definitions for "large-scale" and "small-scale."

I love this map. I always take it with me when I go anywhere in Colorado. The scale is small enough so that you can see all the little back roads, and it's pretty easy to read.

You should receive the sixth edition (2002) of the DeLorme Colorado Atlas & Gazetteer when you order from Amazon, even though Amazon's listing still shows only the fifth edition (2000). The atlas is indispensable if you're planning to travel on the back roads or the major Forest Service or BLM roads of Colorado. Governmental jurisdictions are well-differentiated by color, and the topographic relief is very nice.
The only caveat is that the scale of the maps in this atlas, at 1:160,000, is too large to show great detail. If you're mountain biking or hiking in remote terrain or on minor trails, you should get additional maps, such as smaller-scale governmental maps or those made by Latitude 40. It was this book that first convinced me to buy a GPS. We were out 4-wheeling in the Colorado backcountry and met another 4-wheeler. We were looking at his Colorado Atlas and disagreeing at which trail intersection we were at. He pulled out his GPS and said he would settle this. The GPS with the Colorado Atlas proved us both wrong. I went back to town and bought this book and a GPS.

Although I don't have this one myself, I have several of their atlas in my 4x4 and when I go to Colorado I will buy this one also. If you go into the back country you must have an atlas of that state from DeLorme Mapping
