I bought this book, not ever having heard of ATCs before. Got home, read it cover to cover, went to Yahoo and joined three swaps, and haven't slowed down since! Have made/traded dozens and will soon be hundreds. Have met kindred spirits all over the world, thanks to this book and its inspiration. I lost my bookbag that had this wonderful book in it, and promptly ordered another one. That shows how highly I regard it.

Wether you're a pro or just stepping into the world of ATC's, you'll get a lot out of this book. If you're already experienced in creating ATC's you'll most likely find instructions for a technique you've never tried before. If you're new to the ATC/mixed-media/collage craft, this is a great guide.

There are numerous techniqes featured with great instructions and step by step pictures. There are lots of gorgeous examples from a wide variety of ATC pro's.

This is a book I know I'll be referring back to often as my talent and ability grows in this type of art. Besides the great instructional guide, it's fun to look at for ideas.

Terrific book with a lot of fresh ideas. Some items are harder to find, but reasonable subsitutes can often be found...for instance Orange Goo Gone can be used in place of Gamsol in some instances. You can find a number of groups working on the challenges together and sharing their progress with this book and that's an extraordinary situation, IMO. I love it!

I have only had this book in my possession for about a week and I have already made a trip to the craft store to get a few new supplies and was up until all hours of the night the last few days trying the new techniques! I have been an avid scrapbooker and paper crafter for years, but this book showed me things I have never thought of or tried before and it opened a whole new world of possibilities and inspiration for me. Not only does the author present some great techniques, but she includes gorgeous color photos and easy to follow instructions. Any paper crafter can use the ideas in this guide and make them their own!

I have been disappointed by this book. There is a lot of visual examples of ATC cards, however the explanations on "how to do this-or that" are not vey detailled. Some interesting techniques to use for your ATC, but lack of information.

After reading all the glowing reviews I picked this up from the library. I don't particularly care for North Light Books after having "read" two of them now. They seem to be mostly people's personal journals and art published, and I end up flipping through them in 5 minutes.

This book goes a bit further than the other North Light Book, with more how-to techniques. Still, if you are learning mixed-media collage, a better choice would be The Crafter's Complete Guide to Collage by Amanda Pearce. I just finished that one and it's discusses everything from supports to materials in a well-presented manner. This book has a very limited audience, since it focuses on the artist trading card community.

I've only just started working through this book and, while the techniques are interesting, I'm disappointed to see the heavy emphasis (at least in the early lessons) on pre-made materials that are not available where I live. I would have preferred techniques that did not require me to go out and spend money on stamps and specialty inks; rather, to use materials that are commonly found in new and different ways. However, that point aside, the explanations, while brief, are easy to understand and include pictures for each step. There are many techniques to try and explore -- I intend to do as many of them as I can.

This is a great book with quick and easy techniques that apply to any type of collage/mixed-media art. Not just for the ATC crowd! There are also inspiring examples that are candy for the creative spirit ~ yum. It would have been nice to see a larger selection of artists...it seems a select few artists contributed to the collection of samples, none-the-less, it provides inspiration.

(Hide Review...)  The #1 Authoritative Book on ATCs
Reviewer Permalink
Bernie Berlin, with all her various roles and titles, can add one more to the list: the author of the most comprehensive, informative, creative guide to creating ATCs on the market today.

I have read, looked at, thumbed through, browsed and even intently studied, every guide to ATCs you can think of. As someone who is coo-coo for mixed media (and every aspect of it), I breathe mixed media creations and altered art. No matter what my overflowing drawers, heaped-upon shelves, or pile-laden floor says, I cannot get enough. I've even trained my children - they bring home bits and pieces of things they find on the street or buried at the playground. I am an altered art JUNKie. (Operative word being "junk" to those who don't see the value in found treasures.)

Artist Trading Card Workshop has not left my sight since it arrived. Every time I look at it I see something new. Ms Berlin takes readers on a journey of techniques, supplies, different artists and creative eye candy. It is impossible to pick up the book and not find a fun and different slant to creating art. Every technique is described with a short paragraph enticing the reader of what's to come, moves onto a list of supplies (that doesn't include a bunch of brand names!), and continues with a well-written tutorial of the steps involved. The directions are clear and concise - and if there are questions in the readers' mind, pictures of each step are included, further driving home the information. Ms Berlin smartly wraps up with finished examples of each technique - using her own work and the work of additional artists (both well known and others) to illustrate just what can be accomplished. If her excitement for each idea doesn't get you and your muse salivating, the finished artwork will.

Missing this book would definitely leave a hole in your library. Even if you aren't interested in ATCs, the methods should not be overlooked - there are multiple concepts and new designs even seasoned artists will appreciate.

The book is rounded out with a short synopsis of what ATCs are, when/where to trade them, where to buy the supplies to make them, and tons of interpretations done by a slew of other artists - with individual contact information listed in the back of the book. This book hasn't left anything out - I'm telling you, it's a MUST OWN. Ms Berlin definitely has a talent for teaching and writing - along with some rockin' artistic skills!

I have made several ATC utilizing the techniques that Ms Berlin spelled out and they came out better than I had thought they would. I would recommend this book to any artist at any level.

I love that there are over 100 pages of well-written, beautifully photographed, step-by-step techniques with gorgeous samples that illustrate each one. I've been making ATCs for over 4 years and will keep this book just to try out someof the techniques (which, by the way, you can use on any mixed media project, not just ATCs!).

Good job Bernie. This one is a keeper.

Inspired artists offer a wonderful selection of ATCs. Each chapter offers several great ideas and more importantly, shows techniques. While some of the techniques might seem elementary to some artists - the "how-to" is very helpful to beginners. Don't worry, there are plenty of great ideas for advanced ATC artists as well and some nice variations of ideas. I thought that the general style was very similar throughout (not a huge variety) - very "collage styled." Wonderful examples of common object uses - not everything has to be "fine art" materials. This book proves that there is a place for artists and folk artists to rise above the term "crafter." Great resource page for materials and ATC groups.

I am a newcomer to collage and to artist trading cards (ATC's) and this book was simply wonderful. It explored over 32 different innovative techniques that can not only be used for ATC's but for any type of collage. The book includes a brief history of ATC's, storage, signatures, resources, and many, many examples of beautiful ATC's. What a tremendous guide!

Each step is illustrated in an easy-to-follow fashion, and followed up with creative finished examples. Highly recommended.

I have been make ATC's for a few years now and was feeling a bit lost for ideas. Luckily I happened upon this book: besides being inspired,I was also greatly entertained by the many beautiful(& yes,at times, very unusual) cards shown. The cards themselves are well photographed and the ideas presented are for the most part, fairly easily achieved(although some are for the more experienced in dealing with heat guns, embossing powder, etc.) So I suggest doing the easier techniques first. I received this book as a gift, but probably would've bought it eventually. Anyway,I'm glad I have it..!

I bought this book because I was curious to see decorated cards, as I was making some myself, and in France, it's not so current as it can be in the US. So, I discovered this wonderful "how-to-do" book. The presentation is classic, but the Art shown in it is great. Really beautiful Art & Craft there, it really brings something new, in spite of the fact I already have hundreds of books. If you have a passion for cards, collage, mix media, scrapbooks, painting, or if you are simply curious, you won't regret to have bought this book. I brought it from L.A. to Paris with me and I will bring it back to L.A. with me when I go back there.
