I'm finding my torts class difficult at times, so I'm glad to have this book for my text. It has a lot of examples to illustrate each concept, which is helping me grasp all the ideas pretty well. Also, the book is not nearly as expensive as a lot of textbooks, so I feel I'm getting my money's worth out of it.

I found this book to be too meandering to be much help in studying for my torts final. Maybe it's something to do with the subject. Some of the simpler topics were beaten to death, and I never ended up getting through the whole thing.

Reviewer Permalink
I just recently took an intro Torts class and I found that this book was very helpful in preparing me for my exam. The only required reading for my class was a Torts case book, but I have found that the recommended/supplemental reading books (such as this one) are just as beneficial for clarifying some less-direct topics.

Though I ended up not having much use for this book due to my professor's distinctive teaching methodology, I still found it helpful in clarifying the basic concepts of Torts. The author injects a slightly dorky sense of humor into the narrative, which makes the information more accessible and easier to grasp. He also has a very clear, conversational writing style. Overall recommended (at least if you don't have my Torts professor).

I would recommend this aid to any student taking Torts and finding it difficult to grasp certain topics (that's almost everyone!). I used this book to refer to when I was having trouble understanding a specific topic, and the detailed - but easy to understand explanations helped. Also, there are questions at the end of each topic you can quiz yourself on and then answers are provided for you to check your response against. But one of the most valuable parts of this book was the end where the author, well known and respected in the field of torts law, provides tips for taking a torts exam. The author is a torts professor and discusses many of the common mistakes his students make. Overall, a wonderful book!

This book was incredibly helpful in breaking down torts. I particularly appreciated the chapters on causation. I plan on buying all of the examples and explanations books as supplements to my course readings for next semester as well.

Bought for some reading on vacation. Just trying to figure out if I've been a victim of IIED. If this book helps, I'll write a better review.

There are apparently different criteria for IIED. The most interesting one I've seen are as follows:

1) there was a pattern of conduct, not just an isolated incident
2) the plaintiff was VULNERABLE and the defendant knew it
3) the defendant was in a position of POWER
4) the defendant owed the plaintiff a FIDUCIARY duty

If you learn well from Q&A, this is absolutely key to getting Civ. Pro. Otherwise for me at least, it seemed just like a bunch of somewhat boring rules. Hypotheticals make it more interesting and make you think about all of the trickier scenarios. This book is really good at that. This is so far at least the most helpful study guide I've used in law school.

Torts and Property are the top two E&E books in terms of how helpful they are in covering complex topics for the 1st year law student. This book's layout matches almost perfectly with most torts courses, and the essay exam practices were the most helpful for my finals. Probably the best of the E&E series.

(Hide Review...)  Good Doctrinal Overview
Reviewer Permalink
This book was extremely helpful and accessible for illustrating general doctrine; however, although it discusses a smattering of major cases (e.g., Palsgraf) and other minor cases that may or may not appear in your torts textbook, it does not provide substantial depth for these cases and does not address important dissents (such as Andrews' dissent in Palsgraf), so you shouldn't attempt to rely on it for that purpose. You could easily get through torts without this book, but given the nature of law school curves, why not give yourself every advantage?

I bought this book in addition to other E & E books for other classes. You can definitely get by without the book, not because the book isn't helpful, since the subject matter itself is relatively easy compared to other classes. It was helpful just as a general overview of the subject and in writing outlines.

I love these Examples & Explanations books. The rules make sense when you can get decent examples, and these books do a good job of that.

If you find your outline frustrating (Like Emmanuels and/or Gilberts - both of which drive me nuts with frustration) try the Finals series books. I like them much better as outlines than the "official outlines."

Great book. Definitely doesn't cover every area of Torts that you're going to need to know for your course (IIED, false imprisonment, etc.). Get Gilberts or Emanuels or just use your class notes on this stuff though. Also: if your professor has a slightly different view on the rules (even if it's just a difference in semantics) use your prof's rules when working the Examples. Writing out your answers to the Examples throughout the semester will solidify your knowledge and you won't have to struggle to memorize the elements of each rule at the end of the semester.

The book is great as it is, no doubt, but the older editions do not have Products Liability in them, which is VITAL to your studies. Make sure you get the latest edition, which has two chapters on PL.

Aside from that one missing element in the older edition, the rest of the book is excellent.

Reviewer Permalink
Very seldom is a sequel better than the original. Terminator 2 comes to mind, along with perhaps The Empire Strikes Back and the Aliens series. But for the most part, sequels suck. The opposite is true in law school support texts. I borrowed the 2nd edition of this book from a friend and found it to be utter crap (think crap on the level of the third Austin Powers or The Mummy Returns). It was almost as if Glannon, during a celebration over the success of his Civ Pro E&E success, got hammered and wrote Torts E&E 1st and 2nd Eds in a drunken stupor. It seems, though, that for the 3rd Ed. he either ran out of alcohol or got an editor. It's still not Civ Pro E&E, which single handedly rescued me from oblivion (and likely suicide) in that course, but it is definitely worth having.

Reviewer Permalink
I actually purchased this for help with my classes, but found even though it had some basic information, the best use was not for daily reading and case briefing, but for exams. There are a few pages in each chapter of basic topic description and then the rest of the chapter has example essay type questions you can use to practice before midterms or finals. You then get explanations to go along with those sample questions that let you know if you're on the right track. If you need help for daily reading, this isn't going to help, but if you are worried about exams, this is the book for you.

Reviewer Permalink
For some reason I think Amazon's reviews bleed through different editions.

IE. You will find reviews of the 1st/2nd edition on the 3rd editions page. This often misleads and/or distorts the promotion of a product.

The newest editions of examples & explanations are fabulous and settle a few issues that may have been present in the past. All to often students expect these to be comprehensive outlines like Emanuels that do all the work for them---no. The grades come to those who work and that is where this series shines. It gives you practice and furthers understanding.

This book was actually recommended for our Torts class and I am so glad it was. Glannon is a great writer and he makes things easy and fun to read (sometimes he is a little too punny). His examples are a great help too, especially around exam time. His practice exams are great at helping you to spot the issues and organize them clearly. Glannon also wrote Examples and Explanations for Civil Pro. That is highly recommended also!

This book covers the traditional tort material very well. However, it does not do as good of a job covering products liability and strict liability. If you're in a bind, this book would probably help you salvage a decent grade, but I would not rely on it if you're going for the A.

Buy this and High Court summaries keyed to your casebook and you're set. I also used the Gilberts and Sum and Substance 1L tapes while commuting to school--the best preparation with the least effort. AWESOME!
This book make Torts my best 1L subject. Even though I forgot a lot of details, the substance stayed with me for 1L and it got me an A in Torts. I'd recommend reading prior to the first year, and then reviewing as you complete each chapter during the semester. AWESOME especially since Glannon includes a sample exam--good luck trying to find many profs to offer that!

An ABSOLUTE MUST for 1L! You WILL get your money's worth, and if you keep it in good shape you'll find another 1L to buy it from you when you're done with it. Unless you keep it for Bar Review.
This book is like good foreign cars--the resale value stays up. :)

This book helped me to get the fifth lowest passing grade in my torts class. Don't get me wrong, I'm no slacker: I went to class everyday, took notes, read the assignments, outlined, etc. Still, I felt I needed more help in torts, so I got this book. I managed to read all of the sections relevant to my torts class in about 2 nights. It did clear up a lot for me, so if you're looking for extra help, go for it. However, keep in mind you still have a very stressful 3 hour exam at the end of the semester, and you can't remember everything....

(Hide Review...)  Excellent...for what it covers
Reviewer Permalink
As many of the previous reviewers note, this text is not as good as Glannon's E&E Civ Pro text. While this is true, it is a little misleading to just leave it at that.

The text is excellent, for the tort law that Glannon chooses to cover. The book is mainly about negligence, and Glannon does a fine job covering such a broad topic. The only problem is that, under the intentional torts, Glannon only covers assault, battery. As for defenses to intentional torts: self-defense, and consent. That is way this one is not as good as the others. The title of the book should read: "The Selected Law of Torts."

So don't be misled. This is not your end-all be-all of torts supplements. But, if your having problems with negligence, or causation, this is a fantastic reference. The examples do a great job of slowly working you though those ever so important distinctions. If the title of the book let the reader know that this book is mainly about negligence, then I would have given it 5 stars for sure. Hope this helps.

I strongly recommend against buying this book. A lot of the material covered in a first year Torts class is not covered in this book; a few examples are false imprisonment, defamation, and invasion of privacy. In addition, this book has MISTAKES in it regarding the law; one example is it does not specify the standard of care owed by a physician in a medical malpractice case correctly. Of course it does not even have a separate section dealing with duty owed by professionals...

Instead of this book, I would strongly recommend Understanding Torts by Diamond (Lexis) or the Law of Torts by Dobbs (West).

I was expecting a book about small pastries (I LOVE pastries!), with perhaps lots of lush, full-color photos of tasty raspberry-jam-filled confections (I LOVE raspberry jam!). But, to my initial disappointment, I instead found a book explaining some kind of legal rigmarole about suing people for damaging persons or property. Despite its dry, abstract subject matter, this book actually turned out to be an extremely gripping read. (I devoured it all in one sitting, staying up all night because I just had to know how it ended.) Even if you're only interested in opening your own little patisserie and spreading joy to people through your talent with filo dough, I highly recommend this book anyway: After all, you never know when a customer might slip and fall in your shop.

I bought this book, but I happened to be lucky enough to have a wonderful torts professor so that I never even opened it. However, with that said, I still had experience with this book. My teacher used the examples from it constantly in class to help us understand torts, and it was wonderful. My professor openly advocates this book and many of my classmates swore by it. I do think it could use a little help on the negligence section, but if your torts professor was as horrible as some of my fellow 1Ls, then I highly recommend you purchase this book as a supplement to quiz yourself and make sure you've got those prima facie cases down pat, inside and out.
