Women & Money: Owning the Power to Control Your Destiny

Why is it that women, who are so competent in all other areas of their lives, cannot find the same competence when it comes to matters of money?

Suze Orman investigates the complicated, dysfunctional relationship women have with money in this groundbreaking new book. With her signature mix of insight, compassion, and soul-deep recognition, she equips women with the financial knowledge and emotional awareness to overcome the blocks that have kept them from making more out of the money they make. At the center of the book is The Save Yourself Plan—a streamlined, five-month program that delivers genuine long-term financial security. But what’s at stake is far bigger than money itself: It’s about every woman’s sense of who she is and what she deserves, and why it all begins with the decision to save yourself.

Join the Movement to Save Yourself with this Unprecedented Offer to Readers of Women & Money:

Suze Orman believes that having an account of your own is the cornerstone of long-term financial security, and so she has begun a national movement called Save Yourself to turn this wish—that every woman have an account in her own name—into a reality. She is joined in this crusade by the financial brokerage firm TD Ameritrade, which has come up with an extraordinary offer for readers of WOMEN & MONEY. Follow Suze’s Save Yourself Plan and open an account in your name with TD Ameritrade. Commit to an automatic deposit of at least $50 per month for twelve consecutive months, and TD Ameritrade will provide the incentive in the form of a $100 deposit into your account in the thirteenth month. In other words, you save $600 or more over the course of a year, and TD Ameritrade will reward that effort with a $100 bonus. Learn more inside the book or at www.saveyourself.com.

Offer valid for one new TD AMERITRADE account (non-retirement) opened between 2/27/07 and 3/31/08, and funded by 12 monthly consecutive automatic electronic deposits of $50 or more. First $50 must be deposited within 30 days of opening account. To be eligible, you must be a U.S. resident aged 18 or older. See www.saveyourself.com for obligations and limitations and to accept this offer. This is not an offer or solicitation in any jurisdiction where TD AMERITRADE is not authorized to do business. Money maven Suze Orman's latest book, Women & Money addresses the complicated (and often dysfunctional) relationship women have with personal finance. Orman's direct, non-condescending style is perfect for this subject matter--she begins with the premise that "Women can invest, save, and handle debt as well and skillfully as any man" and then tackles the important question--"So why don't they?" Designed to educate and inspire, Women & Money also offers a "Save Yourself Plan," a five-month program that "delivers genuine long-term financial security." Want to know more? Watch a video message from Suze below, and take a gander at the first chapter of Women & Money--you'll be "controlling your destiny" in no time. --Daphne Durham

Read the First Chapter of Women & Money

For Women Only

I never thought I'd write a book about money just for women. I never thought it was necessary. So then why am I doing just that in my eighth book? And why now? Let me explain. All my previous books were written with the belief that gender is not a factor on any level in mastering the nuts and bolts of smart financial management. Women can invest, save, and handle debt just as well and skillfully as any man. I still believe that--why would anyone think differently? So imagine my surprise when I learned that some of the people closest to me in my life were in the dark about their own finances. Clueless. Or, in some cases, willfully resisting doing what they knew needed to be done. I'm talking about smart, competent, accomplished women who present a face to the world that is pure confidence and capability. Do you mean to tell me that I, Suze Orman, who make my living solving the financial problems of total strangers, couldn't spot the trouble brewing so close to home? I don't think I'm blind; I just think that these women became very, very good at hiding their troubles from me.Why not? They had years of practice hiding them from themselves.

For women who have little or no working knowledge about how finances and investments should be ran, this book is an excellent place to start. It definietely takes the blinders off--especially since women can no longer go under their spouse's credit rating should things happen that aren't forseen. In my case it was a divorce, but this book gave me a wealth of info that I fully intend to apply.

For those of you going through a separation of some sort, this is a good book to start with. She doesn't come out and mention death and/or divorce, but paints out scenarios that often leave women holding the bag and fending for themselves. There are a lot of preventative measures that can be taken also. The bottom line is that we no longer live in an age where women can rely on the spouse or significant other to provide--something has to be set aside just in case the unforseen occurs.

This book is a good investment. I strongly urge women to read it.

Suze Orman hammers home that women need a will, an irrevocable trust and a durable power of attorney. This is information that she discusses in each one of her books. In some of her books, she goes more in-depth but this book, I found the information more basic, just that in this book, she targets women. She talks about how to come up with a 12-month plan to get your finances in order but I found her overly confident in her belief that her methods are going to work in EVERY situation. Unlike her other fantastic books, The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous and Broke and the 9 Steps to Financial Freedom, I found most of the information in this book to be common sense financial advice. I understand, though that she needs to rehash this information because not everyone will read all of her books, however, she could have easily limited this information to a single chapter in one of her better books.

I am a young-ish, successful sales-woman, looking to further my knowledge about general finances and investing. This book is great, as it is easy to read and very informative. Suzie does a great job of speaking to all different types of women: stay at home moms, those heavily in debt, and those who are looking to grow their money in the future. Most importantly, she ties these need-to-know finance topics with the emotional "issues" woman generally deal with when it comes to finances. I would highly recommend this book, but it is a book for finance "beginners" or those who need help.

This book is just what I needed to get started. My uncle had signed me up for Kiplinger's magazine, but I just had no idea how to make sense of the magazine or doing anything based upon it. There were lots of odd terms in it and I didn't understand what anything meant. Suze's book is just the opposite. It taught me everything I needed to know about how to actually START, which is so important. I have found that the practical STARTing information is not so readily available on other money books. The text is also simple to read. Wonderful. And to the poster who suggested that this book is for the above average person, I heartily disagree. I do not have much money at all but have found the book useful. Indeed, Suze actually emphasizes building your emergency fund at the same time as you are building your retirement fund, so that you will not devote all your money to retirement and then end up with a toothbill you cannot pay. The book is great!

I bought this book because I saw her on PBS. The book is just her speech she gives every time. I wanted the book because there was supposed to be a code in it that you could put in the computer and get a savings account that would pay you $100 after 12 consecutive months of savings. There was no code in the entire book. Her website said it was on page 85. It was not there. I read the entire book and never found it. Very disappointing considering I thought the book would pay for itself.

I absolutely loved this book. I highly recommend it to all my friends. Suze Orman writes this one on a more personal level. I felt that everything she was saying was directed right at me. Many of the questions I had about investing and planning for retirement she answered in a way I could understand. So many times financial planning books seem so far fetched that the plan just doesn't seem something I could do. Suze's book did not leave me with that feeling. I feel I can put her 5 month plan to work. If you are looking for simple instructions on how to get out of debt, plan for retirement, etc. this is definetly the book for you!

And what I needed to know is not just about what to do with my money, but that I even needed to start asking questions about it, and how to go about doing that. I am the woman that Suze wrote this book for. My dad was great with money, and my brother and sister are, too. I did not naturally inherit this trait, so I have always been a mess when it comes to finances. I always felt "dumb" for not knowing these things, but what I finally realize is that I should stop blaming myself for not knowing what was never taught and start taking control by educating MYSELF. I am still reading the book, but already feel some of the power that Suze is talking about just by knowing the details of my checking account and what APY means for example... I am someone who was letting my husband take care of everything and letting myself stay in the dark, but Suze has changed all that. Our relationship with money has already changed, as he sees me becoming more in control. He will call and consult me before making a large purchase, b/c he knows I am watching over our finances. I also love the 8 qualities of a wealthy woman section; I have started making a conscious effort to adopt these and it really does make a difference. It doesn't happen overnight and takes dedication (I am only just beginning), but I do believe it is possible. Highly recommend this book to any woman.

I was looking for a guidebook to understand why I had gotten into my downward financial spiral years ago, but also to remedy the problem. I had seen Suze Orman's name and books for years but never really paid much attention. This title captured my interest immediately, and I feel I've made a lifesaving choice by reading this book. Suze Orman lays out clearly, in a month by month program, everything a woman needs to do to make critical changes in her own financial realm, and guide her along the way in choosing realistic answers to current financial stressors while offering solid and safe advice in setting personal goals. The icing on the cake is a $100. bonus offered by TD Ameritrade just by opening a savings account and making a commitment to savings. We may not all end up millionaires, but we all certainly have room for major improvement in how we approach our financial decisions. I have three teenage daughters, and believe me, I will teach them what I have learned from this book. I highly recommend reading Women & Money.

This book made me realize my lack of respect for my hard earned money.Since reading I have focused on investing for the future and stopped being so compulsive in shopping. This book is truly an eye opener and I'd recommend it highly!

This book and the products and information offered on her website regarding this book are beneficial reading for everyone. This book along with Suze's shows and other books are changing my husband's and my opinions about and relationship with money. Makes a great gift too!

Suze's book is easy to read and follow. Very inspiring. Great book for anyone who wants to seriously step up and take control of their own financial destiny...as I have just started.

I have intended to become really organized for the past forty years. (It's amazing how quickly these years have evaporated). Suzi's book provided the road map and stimulus that I needed. I now can quickly find a copy of any document I need and the originals are safely protected rather than shoved in a file somewhere.

Most important, my husband and I discovered that the death benefits we thought would carry us until the surviving one could make financial decisions DID NOT EXIST! Our assumptions were hundreds of dollars A MONTH LESS than we had planned. This allows us to adjust our thinking rather than face a huge financial trauma at the worst possible time.
