Windows XP For Dummies, 2nd Edition

Windows is the world’s most popular operating system, and Windows For Dummies is the bestselling computer book ever. When you look at Windows XP For Dummies, 2nd Edition, it’s easy to see why. Here’s all the stuff you want to know, served up in plain English and seasoned with a few chuckles. But make no mistake, this book means business.

Author Andy Rathbone listened to what you wanted to know, and this edition is loaded with additional information about

  • E-mail, faxing, and troubleshooting
  • Maximizing security features
  • Customizing and upgrading Windows XP
  • Multimedia applications—CDs, digital music and photos, video, and more
  • Answers to questions asked by thousands of Windows users

If you’re just getting started with Windows XP, you’ll find Windows XP For Dummies, 2nd Edition is a lot easier than trying to get the fourth-grader next door to explain it to you. (Andy Rathbone is a lot more patient.) There’s a whole section devoted to “Windows XP Stuff Everybody Thinks You Already Know,” so you can get the hang of the basics quickly and in the privacy of your own home. And if you’ve been around a couple of generations of Windows, you’ll be especially interested in how to squeeze maximum security from the beefed-up anti-spam and firewall features in Service Pack 2.

Windows XP For Dummies, 2nd Edition is sort of like a buffet—you can sample everything, or just stick with the stuff you know you like. You’ll find out how to

  • Locate programs and files, organize your information, and fax, scan, or print documents
  • Get online safely, send and receive e-mail, work with Internet Explorer’s security toolbar, and steer clear of pop-ups, viruses, and spam
  • Make Windows XP work the way you want it to, share your computer while maintaining your privacy, set up a network, and perform routine maintenance
  • Transfer and organize pictures from your digital camera, edit digital video, and create custom CDs of your favorite tunes
  • Use Windows XP’s troubleshooting wizards and become your own computer doctor

With its task-oriented table of contents and tear-out cheat sheet, Windows XP For Dummies, 2nd Edition is easy to use. You can quickly find what you want to know, and you just may discover that this book is as important to your computer as the power cord.

Windows XP for Dummies does a good job in its role as the flagship of the Dummies line, providing Windows novices with a guided introduction to Microsoft's latest and most feature-rich operating system for everyday computer users. Its treatment of computer, Windows, and Internet fundamentals is among the best on the market, and author Andy Rathbone has an appealing way of writing that's simultaneously fun and detail-rich. If you're a Windows novice--meaning you don't know how to undelete a file that's been sent to the Recycle Bin, or what a Web browser is, or what it means to "cut and paste" text--you will get a lot out of Rathbone's work.

Some aspects of this book could be better, such as the part of the networking chapter that calls for an Ethernet hub without noting that a switch, though possibly more expensive, would do the job better, without any additional hassle. The networking coverage also does an inadequate job of explaining how to share a cable modem or DSL connection among several computers. This is a serious shortcoming, and we're getting to the point in our evolution as a society of computer users at which we can assume that everyone knows what the "Cancel" button does and would rather read about the newer, more exciting things that Windows XP can do. Even the dummies aren't that dumb anymore.

But that said--and Rathbone does confine a lot of the really elementary stuff to a skinny introductory chapter--this book is a boon to people who aren't familiar with Windows XP or its immediate predecessors (including Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me). It's also great for people who have learned a little about Windows on the job or from their kids, and want to expand on what they know. --David Wall

Topics covered: Microsoft Windows XP for people completely unfamiliar with the operating system and other recent versions of Windows. HAD BOUGHT WINDOWS XP TO UPGRADE MY WIN 98 AND FOUND THAT THERE WAS ENOUGH OF A DIFFERENCE THAT I NEEDED A LITTLE EXTRA HELP. I JUST STARTED USING COMPUTERS AGAIN AFTER BEING AWAY FOR 13 YEARS AND THEY HAVE REALLY CHANGED. I HAD TO UPGRADE BECAUSE ALL THE NEWW EQUIPMENT THAT I BOUGHT HAD TO HAVE XP, 2000, OR BETTER TO RUN. THIS BOOK HAS THE HINTS THAT I NEED TO GET ME FROM STUCK TO UN-STUCK IN A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME. TOO MANY OTHER BOOKS ARE TOO TECHNICAL FOR THE AVERAGE JOE TO UNDERSTAND.

I have a friend who is in her 80's, relatively inexperienced in computers and dependent on grandchildren to help, that is when she could find them. I saw this and sent it to her. Her comments were very enthuiastic. She claims that it substituted for a grandchild quite well on several occasions.

I did not find the book that helpful. A lot of times, the information in the book does not match the information on the window menu, task bar, etc. I had to lesrn through trial and error. I thought this book would help me to avoid that. It did not. I am still learning through trail and error. The book seems to be outdated, and it is a disappointment to me.

These days, so many people really don't have the slightest idea of knowing how to sincerely operate a computer. With all the hype over which to choose from, there is always one thing they all have in common, the operating system. Most computers today that are being released, are geared towards the Windows XP operating systems, XP Professional, Home edition, and the widely released Media Center editions. Nevertheless, with all the hype of Windows upcoming operating system the Vista, many are looking to buy a computer just to upgrade to the next level. But, if you can't even place your fingers on the button.

Windows XP For Dummies is a very detailed, and diverse guide which mainly focuses on the Home and Professional editions. The book gives a lot in each simple way to operate each part of the operating system from how to configure the taskbars to either the traditional taskbar menus, or the contemporary, sleek Windows XP menu. The book gives tips on how to use each main part of the operating system from the Windows Media Player 10th edition, to knowing how you can simply copy your media onto a blank disc or DVD recordable disc. The book gives detailed words on how to maintain and use each part of the operating system with todbits for anybody who gets stuck in a rough problem. For example, if you find that the computer freezes up, you can simply hold the power button down for a few seconds, and it will manually shut down. You'll also know how to make the backwards compatabilty from programs from previous versions of Windows like 98 or Millenium editions, for efficency on the XP edition where there would be problems.

All in all, I just wish this edition could've done a better job at focusing on the Media Center editons of Windows XP, and gave a few more charts about each part of the operating system. Nevertheless, the Windows XP for Dummies is a still a great buy for any new computer owner. I really am learning a whole lot with this great book, and if you're into a new computer, this is a must buy for you.

The book for the most part is having a discussion with you about Windows XP. Offering comments or critiques. It is not a book that I would recommend for learning via book. A Few areas actually go into depth. I see it as a PowerPoint presentation discussion about basics XP and should have been sold as. It lacked detail in networking and wireless needed for many user/owner issues.

As stated and well known to most, the "...For Dummies" series of books is aimed at beginners. That doesn't take away from the valuable information that is included in their send up of Windows XP and believe or not I still refer to it for it's other stated purpose - "a reference for the rest of us."
Because of the nature and audience level of expertise, IT STILL IS a fantastic basic reference and I have used it to find broader subjects and to narrow my search in both my higher level references on XP - "Windows XP: The Missing Manual" and "Windows XP Inside Out Second Deluxe Edition". Using a computer and a new operating system is like riding a bike. The Dummies series are the ones to get when you still need training wheels on flat ground. It makes the basis of knowledge found in more advanced references (ones that are well written, anyway as the two I've mentioned)easier to understand and become proficient and confidentwith the subject matter at higher levels.
I think the book is worth the cost when you're first starting out.

If you don't know diddly about computers like me when I got mine, don't think you're going to sit down and fool around with one for an hour and have it all figured out. You will find yourself many times looking at the screen wondering what you are looking at and what it all means and what you are supposed to do with it. And, the computer world seems to assume you already know all kinds of deep stuff, and when they offer instructions (they call it "help") you don't even understand what the "help" is talking about. This book spells it out plainly in the language we use every day talking about normal things. If you are a commoner like me, if you don't have a book like this you are going to waste very many frustrating, bewildering hours trying to catch on. Also, the book will make you aware of Windows features that are not obvious and that you probably won't discover very soon just by pecking around. Andy Rathbone is funny, and the book is easy and enjoyable to read. If you are finding yourself in deep water like I did, then I recommend it.

Andy Rathbone is one of the grand old geeks of the Dummies' stable. How he gets so much writing done on such a range of subjects is cause for awe-struck wonder in the rest of us.

Like other books he's written, Windows XP for Dummies is clear and readable, with as helpful an index as any computer self-help book (not that that's aying a whole lot).

A computer klutz myself, I've found this book an invaluable tool for getting unstuck in the cyber muddles I so often fall into.

This isn't a bad book on Windows XP. I got it to figure out how XP is different from the older versions of Windows. It does that pretty well with good explanations and helpful tips. But this book is mainly for someone brand-new to Windows who is just pulling out their new computer and wondering what to do next. It does have some tips and information for the experienced user. If you know how to use any version of Windows, just borrow a copy for a weekend.

This is an updated edition of the continuing series on Microsoft's Windows products. This version includes the latest Windows XP updates including Service Pack 2. As you would expect this book is aimed at the user working with the features contained within XP. This includes fundamental operating system features such as optimizing the system and to suit the individual's taste, and features that are included in Windows XP like working with the Internet, Outlook Express, scanning and faxing, CD burning and other included application programs.

Perhaps the best aspect of this book is the light tone and readable style that has been perfected over the previous 35 For Dummies books written by Andy Rathbone.

Sure, you can read all the thick Egghead books, if you want, but the average user can simply purchase a copy of this great little book, to learn the basics of the XP Operating System, and use it for reference, occasionally.

The Windows XP Operating System is so Wonderful, that a user will not have much trouble, at all. This "Dummies" book should suffice for any questions that arise while using this Fantastic O.S.

Do yourself a Favor, and Upgrade from Windows '98 or, preferably, Windows 2000. Install "Microsoft Office XP Professional Upgrade, by Microsoft," and watch 98% of your computer woes vanish before your eyes ! Do the Updates, and watch the remaining 2% disappear, without a trace.

This book is really all the average Home user needs to run with XP. I work in IT, troubleshooting computers, and I strongly recommend this simple reference guide. I am not afraid to admit I was a "Dummy," in regards to XP.

Furthermore, I am using a "Dummies" book to help study for the A+ Exams. These books are fantastic. If you do not have the time to dig-through complicated information to find the answer to a dilemma, use the Index & Glossary to quickly get back to your work. The Screen Shots and Succinct Commentary will have you rolling right along, singing the Praises of XP.
