What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause: The Breakthrough Book on Natural Progesterone

Women considering hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopause symptoms and health benefits should read this controversial, provocative book first. "Advertising and research dollars are spent trying to convince women that estrogen will cure everything from heart disease to Alzheimer's," writes John R. Lee, M.D., "but there is scant evidence for any of these claims and reams of evidence that synthetic estrogens are highly toxic and carcinogenic." Lee has studied the research and concludes that estrogen is not the magic bullet for protection against heart disease and osteoporosis, nor does it retard aging. Natural progesterone, instead, puts postmenopausal women's hormones in balance, says Lee. He cites study after study that indicates that natural progesterone, obtained in cream form, delivers what the usual HRT only promises."Menopause as a disease has been largely fabricated by physicians and the pharmaceutical industry," says this leader of a "quiet but powerful revolution" regarding HRT. What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause covers the benefits of natural progesterone, the history and politics of the medical and drug establishment, the biochemistry and dynamics of hormones and how they get out of balance, and how to prevent hormone imbalance and stay healthy. Lee empowers you to ask hard questions of your doctor. Highly recommended. --Joan Price

Please remember that when it comes to hormone balance, there is no one size fits all approach. Each person has a unique hormone blueprint and would be wise to find a competent physician, trained in hormone balance, with clinical experience, who can TEST your hormones, help you achieve balance, and keep you safe. Hormone balance is a delicate matter, and each hormone affects others.

For additional information, check out www.hormonesynergy.com . Hormones are powerful things and while Dr. Lee offers valuable information about hormone balance in his book and the role "bio-identical" or "biologically equivalant" hormones (much safer than their synthetic counterparts) its not always as simple as bathing yourself in over the counter progesterone creams.

Become educated, continue to get informed!

There is not a woman who should miss reading "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause" and the companion books: "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Pre-Menopause" and "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer". As others have commented here, such books will give you very important, and unique, health information to assist you to make the best decisions for your midlife health. Don't overlook the books written by Sandra Cabot and Linda Ojeda which are excellent also. Each brings something different to the table. I have read about every book on the market on this subject and these five are the best. You may not find every statement made in these books to be necessarily true for yourself, and that is OK. Also, some people have misinterpreted Dr. Lee's books, reading them to advise never taking estrogen in any form and this is not so. I was fortunate enough to be able to speak with him when he gave a lecture in my city a few years ago. He certainly advised against the combination hormone replacement pills so routinely prescribed which contain Premarin and synthetic progesterone. These have now been proven dangerous in highly publicized studies, as Dr. Lee said all along. Using a bioidentical estrogen skin cream and balancing it with natural progesterone cream in specific measured amounts is not the same thing, and may benefit some women. As Dr. Lee explains, the route of administration, the chemical makeup, the amount, and other factors make a difference. Rather than take the opinions of other people as to what Dr. Lee said as truth, read Dr. Lee's books for yourself. He has illuminated the subject of natural progesterone cream and offers information you may not hear from your doctor. This cream has the same chemical composition as that made by your own body but is not subject to patent, does not require a prescription, and is available in health food stores. A key benefit of the progesterone cream is that it stands alone in working to rebuild bone that is rapidly lost during the menopausal years. Dr. Lee explains the full details and his well-documented research on this. Become well-informed and you will make the best decisions for yourself regarding your health.

I have worked in the health food and the medical fields. I have seen the "miracle cure alls" come and go. This book seems to say that using Progesterone is a super cure to all womanly woes. Having had womanly woes, I tried using progesterone for my endometriosis. It was not a cure-all. I'm sure that it helps some women, but be wary of putting all your faith in it.

As a professional health specialist I have read extensively about natural progesterone cream and hormones since my diagnosis of breast cancer in 2001 and have been using it since that time instead of the drugs and radiotherapy recommended by my doctors. Dr Lee's work is remarkable but you must read carefully otherwise you will be under misapprehensions like some of these other reviewers who are still making mistakes about the difference between natural progesterone and synthetic progestins! They are molecularly different and natural progesterone does not carry the same side effects or risks that the synthetic ones do! I am the Hormone Health Expert for the CMA and Bio Vitality Limited where we also advocate hormone testing so that you do not supplement if you do not need it! It's really what the doctors should be doing before they give out hormones of any description.

I was diagnosed with uterine fibroids seven years ago, and through browsing the internet I found out about Dr. Lee and this book. I took his advice, and I must have indeed been progesterone deficient because using the natural progesterone did clear up the fibroids and repair some other problems I was having. Dr. Lee also has other good pieces of advice that most physicians will not talk about in the realm of nutrition and environmental toxins. Especially eye-opening was his discussion of how non-organic meats and milk are full of estrogen due to modern farming methods. In retrospect, he apparently was also right about Premarin, as in the past three years medical trials showed this drug to be so harmful that the test was in fact halted due to its initial findings. Prior to that it was being passed out like candy by physicians to practically all menopausal women. However, I do have an aunt who has been on it for over twenty years, closely monitored, and her quality of life is probably higher because of it. This is because for her, specifically, the drug works without side effects. As for me, as I passed through menopause and continued to take progesterone, it began to cause problems for me. My blood pressure went up, I was constantly hyper, I had palpatations, and my blood sugar went up and down like a roller coaster. I took a saliva test for my hormones, and my progesterone was off the charts. The nutritionist I was working with said to stop the progesterone immediately. She also told me that although natural progesterone is a godsend to many women, there are some, like me, that are very sensitive to the cortisol related to progesterone and have the woes I described. Within three months of quitting the progesterone, everything returned to normal with the exception of my thyroid, which still requires supplementation to this day, three years later. I guess the moral to this story is that there is always something out there - whether it be a pharmaceutical or a natural product- that helps some people. Progesterone is one of those natural products, but please monitor yourself with regular hormonal saliva tests to insure that you personally are in balance. It's just too bad that proponents of natural cures and traditional physicians have to look at each other as enemies and not realize that both have something to add to the quality of life.

Thank you, Dr. Lee for your book! I was on a calculated plan of natural progesterone for approximately 8 months which corrected many of the issues brought on by synthetic progestogens. Contrary to what some people are writing in their reviews, natural progesterone is NOT the same as the synthetic progestogens found in birth control pills or RU-486, nor can natural progesterone be used at the same amount each month or forever. I, for one, CANNOT use synthetic progestogens because of the problems they cause--leg cramping, sleeplessness, mood changes, blood clots, weight gain to mention a few. Dosage of natural progesterone totally depends on physical, monthly needs of the individual woman-some months, a little more, some months, a little less, and always under the guidance of physicians who understand and support the use of natural progesterone. Hurray to those who bring this information to the forefront and are not slaves of the pharmaceutical companies!

Other reviewers have written about the incredible results they are getting with natural progesterone cream. Six months ago, I started using 20 mg. every night before bed and almost from the first I began to feel more relaxed, sleep better, and my hot flashes have almost completely disappeared. One added bonus is that after 4 months my doctor was able to reduce my thyroid med. dosage for the first time in 20 years! Of course, I use a natural form of thyroid (Armour), so women taking synthetic forms of thyroid may have an entirely different response. Natural hormones seem to complement and enhance each other, like the original hormones in the body did when we were younger. A good book on this is Dr. David Brownstein's book "The Miracle of Natural Hormones," and Dr. Erika Schwartz's book "The Hormone Solution" is also helpful.

Dr. Lee's book has saved the quality of my life since 1998. I was given birth control pills, Provera, diuretics to stop the swelling from Provera and the Pill. I thought I was going crazy.

Then I found Dr. Lee's book and found a doctor to prescribe the natural progesterone and my symptoms went away. No more tears, bloating, swelling, sore breasts, angry episodes, night sweats, binges, hot flashes, or hopelessness.

Dr. Lee's book helped me to understand that my body would not tolerate the pharmaceutical companies' progestines that were patented to replace the natural progesterone. It is a money issue and so many women suffer from using man-made progestins that are in the Pill and Provera. Use Dr. Lee's recommendations on Natural Progesterone.

Dr. Lee's book convinced me to try natural progesterone, and it was one of the worst decisions ever. After only one month of use, I developed blood clots in my legs, and became so ill that it has taken over six months to recover. Progesterone cream builds up in your tissues over time and can make you very, very sick. Do not believe it when you read that there are no side effects and it is impossible to overdose . [...] Know that the progesterone you're putting on your skin, although "natural", is capable of having all the same effects as the progesterone in birth control pills and RU-486 ~ in other words, you're using something with serious dangers connected to it. Please, please be careful. Get Barbara Seaman or Ellen Grant, MD's books for better information.

As a holistic nurse who has practiced complementary approaches and taught women self-care measures for menopause for more than 20 years, this book seems too narrowly focused. There is so much more going on during the menopause process than this book mentions.

For the past year, I've hosted the Menopause web site at bellaonline.com and the women who ask me questions bring up everything from exercise to herbs to stress reduction to insomnia and more. For a book to be truly useful to them, I think it needs to focus on these aspects, too.

Dr. Lee was one of the first to reveal the difference between natural progesterone and progestins. Progestins are one of the synthetic ingredients in Prempro, the HRT drug used in the WHI studies that many women mistakenly think is the only way to replace hormones. Surprise! Hormones that are identical to the ones your body has less and less of as you age have been around for years, like the progesterone cream Dr. Lee recommends. They can't be patented, so drug companies don't push them like they do Premarin and Prempro. I personally also needed natural estrogen, like that in the Vivelle DOT patch and Estrace tablets, so you might want to do some reading beyond Dr. Lee. It's not "all in your head" and it affects your mind, body, and sex life, so get your hormones straight!
