It is a good book worth to read. Although I am a little reserved about natural progesterone (is it as good as the aurthor said). Through this book, you can get more knowledge and then judge by yourself.

"What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Premenopause" is a paradigm shifting book in women's health that I think should be required reading for women of all ages. The authors, as well as many other holistic practitioners, have found that many of the symptoms common in women from about their 30s until menopause such as monthly migraines and PMS are caused by estrogen dominance (a termed coined by Dr. Lee) and are easily correctable with progesterone cream, as well as diet, exercise, and lifestyle. The authors explain, however, that progesterone is no panacea, and it's pointless to add it if a woman is going to have an unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle.

Why bio-identical progesterone and not Premarin ® (PREgnant MARe urINe hormones)? Author John Lee, M.D. was among the first to sound the alarm to the general public about the dangers of taking synthetic female hormones, equine hormones (such as Premarin ®), and estrogen unopposed by progesterone. This book not only discusses the dangers of the above, but explicitly shows women how to balance their hormones through diet, exercise, lifestyle, and bio-indentical progesterone. It is so thorough and well-written that the reader should have no doubts on when and how to safely use bio-indentical progesterone.

Why is this 1999 book still relevant? A National Institutes of Health (NIH) 2004 press release about the Women's Health Initiative study reads, "The estrogen-plus-progestin trial was stopped after 5.6 years of follow-up because of an increased risk of breast cancer and because the risk of breast cancer, coronary heart disease, stroke, and blood clots outweighed the benefits on hip fracture and colorectal cancer." Yet doctors today routinely endanger women's health by prescribing synthetic and/or horse hormones that don't match hormone receptor sites in the human body, and unopposed estrogen. Typically doctors are educated by the pharmaceutical industry which has profit in mind, not Dr. Lee who had women's optimal health in mind.

By the way, the breast cancer section of this book is outstanding, and should be read by any woman with a concern about or history or family history of breast cancer. It makes some key points on prevention.

As a 10 year-old book according to as of this writing, not much about the book is out-of-date with the notable exception of amounts of supplements recommended. For example, they say not much is known about vitamin D, and they recommend 100 to 400 IU. Ten years later, much is known about vitamin D, including the fact most Americans, Canadians and Europeans are too low in it and need 1,000 to 4,000 IU daily in the winter months to help not only with healthy bones but an optimal immune system. The book also recommends taking pre-formed vitamin A, which is now known to be associated with osteoporosis. If the reader uses the supplements recommended, I suggest she look up the amounts recommended for optimal health based on current knowledge. They also say to supplement with vitamin E, failing to mention that the unnatural "dl" form of vitamin E is virtually useless, whereas the benefits are found in the natural "d" form. (Look on the label for the form.)

I have a quibble here and there in the nutrition section (no, strict vegetarians do not all need to supplement zinc, provided they eat nuts regularly). Overall, however, the nutrition section is very thorough, even discussing food allergies and the avoidance of yeast infections.

There are a lot more books on bioidentical hormones than there were when this book was published in 1999. But you can't go wrong with this one.

I only wish I would have found this book 11 years ago. My problems started in my 30's and prior to my hysterectomy I had four "female" surgeries and was put on some pretty nasty hormones to try and alleviate my symptoms. None of which solved the problems, which progressively got worse with each year. I was suffering was dysmenorrhea, menorrhagia, fibroids and ovarian cysts. I has a multitude of symptoms that had been communicated to my doctors and were ignored. In 2009 I has an ovarian cancer scare that resulted in a partial hysterectomy which found severe endometriosis and a complicated ovarian cyst which was only going to larger and bigger if it wasn't removed. I read this book after my surgery because my doctor wanted me to continue birth control pills to prevent reoccurrence of the endometriosis. My mother also died of breast cancer and I wanted to make life style changes that would lower my risk. This book will educate you on so many levels to what steps you can take to get your hormone levels stablized and live a happy, healthy life. My doctors never took the time to educate me on why or rather what was causing all my problems. After reading this book I now understand.

This book and "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause" have a lot of cross over. I actually wish there was only 1 book because really to get everything that is covered in both books, you have to get and read 2. I didn't really mind though because they are so good.

These books are full of information about hormone replacement, what works what doesn't. Lots of detail and lots of referenced studies and papers. But still esay to read and follow. It's the kind of book where you want to dog-ear half the pages so you don't forget something you read.

All women should read this. I am quite knowledgeable about health, but didn't really understand what progesterone and estrogen do and how they work.

Bottom line is that almost all women (and men too!) in industrial societies are estrogen dominant and need progesterone to balance it. The estrogen comes from petrochemicals and toxins in our environment (plastics, etc) and eating lousy food. As well as from being overweight (fat cells make estrogen because nature wants you to be fertile when food is plentiful.)

Helps to have a good idea of what is going on and when. As we get older, its always hard to understand the changes we are going through. We have purchsaed a couple books to make sure we see if there are other views or ideas on what is going on that will work best for my wife. So far things are going well.

The information in this book was invaluable in determining what to do for pre-menopause. The recommendations and information went well beyond what my own doctor presented me with. I did not need anti-depressants, as my doctor would prescribe. I just needed to make some changes in my lifestyle, eating and a little natural hormone (progesterone), to help me take my life back in my own hands. I highly recommend this book. I have shared it with some of my friends and they were so thankful to see their own problems addressed in this book.

I am in my early forties and had begun to experience bouts of extreme insomnia. I was so exhausted. Once I finally fell asleep, I was only able to stay asleep for a couple of hours at a time. I also noticed that my periods, which had always been like clockwork, were starting to come early one month and late the next. Then, I had my first hot flash. Oh no, I thought. Is this a sign of menopause? I'm too young for this! I began searching the internet for menopause symptoms and came across a recommendation for this book. I purchased the Kindle version and read it in one night. One of the women mentioned in the book had symptoms identical to mine. The book recommends the use of a natural progesterone cream for the symptoms. I decided to give it a try. After only one week using the cream, I was like a different person. My insomnia is now gone! I am able to sleep for 8 hours a night. My energy level is higher than it has been in years. My periods are back to normal and I haven't experienced any more hot flashes. For anyone who is having similar symptoms, I urge you to read this book.

"What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Pre-Menopause," What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause," and "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer" are books that every woman needs to read.

Dr. Lee's books are thorough and medically detailed, they are not simplistic reading. Patience: if you are a woman, you need this information. Do you consider anything more important than your health? You may want to start with the book "Dr. John Lee's Hormone Balance Made Simple," by Dr. John Lee and Virginia Hopkins, which is much less technical and can serve as a good handbook companion. The three books mentioned above have important additional information.

In an era before the latest studies, Dr. Lee was advising against artificial estrogen and the combination tablets that are made of Premarin with artificial progesterone for relief of pre- and menopause symptoms. These are not bio-identical and now they have once and for all been proven dangerous in the highly publicized studies.

The late Dr. Lee had nothing whatever to sell except some very important information. You make the best decisions when you have the most competent information.

Dr. Lee's outstanding main contribution was in making known the many uses of natural progesterone cream, information you probably will NOT hear from your doctor, since this extremely beneficial natural cream happens to be available over-the-counter without prescription.

You can begin benefitting from this cream, available in most health food stores, as early as your 20's or as late as your 90's but as there are many imitation products, you need Dr. Lee's book(s) to guide you correctly.

Unlike the synthetic prescribed "progestins," (fake progesterone), this cream is bio-identical, having the same chemistry as progesterone made by the body. It is derived from plants and is applied on the skin, being well-absorbed.

It is a wonderful supplement with many benefits, the most important of which regards our skeletal structure. For women, bone is automatically and continually lost very rapidly starting around age 50, leading to osteoporosis. This causes many problems such as "dowager's hump", but worse, a fractured hip or spine can be an extremely serious injury.

The progesterone has been well-proven by Dr. Lee to actually REBUILD BONE in carefully documented studies over many years and in the premenopause and menopause books Dr. Lee supplies all of the details as to how this works and why there is nothing comparable available that works as well to prevent osteoporosis.

Before you fall for any of the celebrity TV-advertised prescription "bone building" medications, please invest a much smaller sum in Dr. Lee's pre-menopause and menopause books that discuss such harmful and ineffective products.

For pre-menopausal women, progesterone cream can also prevent and solve numerous monthly problems that may begin as early as the 20's.

(Also excellent are the books "Menopause Without Medicine" by Linda Ojeda and "Smart Medicine for Menopause" by Sandra Cabot, M.D. plus any other book she wrote that you can obtain).

This book is a must read...for everyone! I learned so much about hormones and health. Who knew hormones regulate most things in the body? For both men and women! If our hormones are out of balance, it can affect so many things. Dr. Lee does a great job of educating us on hormones, balance and using natural hormones. I highly recommend this book and all others Dr. Lee has written.

This book and "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause", have helped me so much to know what is going on with me and my body and to assist me in finding ways to help myself. Topical, natural Progesterone has been a life saver, no more hot flashes or night sweats, and it is helping my mood to stabilize. His books explain the difference between natural and 'man made' and how the chemical composition needs to be the same chemical composition as created by our bodies. I refer back to both of these books often and have been taking vitamins and supplements. I have found these to be a wealth of wisdom.

I am now a happy, WELL-RESTED 40 yr old due to this book (and another book: Natural Hormone Balance For Women by Dr. Uzzi Reiss)
Both of these have saved my LIFE, most importantly my SLEEP!

For the past few years (after having a 3rd child) from age 37 onward, I could no longer fall into sleep, nor get REM/Delta level, and NOTHING would work (except Ambien).

Well now since learning about natural progesterone cream and other important, necessary homones the body may need (and mine did), such as DHEA and Melatonin, I now use all three nearly every night at bedtime: one tiny dab of a natural progesterone cream, 2 sprays (equals 10 mg) of a DHEA spray called Biosom, and 1 mg or less (half the pill) of Melatonin Plus by Schiff (Found at Sam's, it also contains vitamin B6 and L-Theanine very needed additions to helping Melatonin work).

Now I sleep like a baby every night!
No more Ambien!:)

Buy this book (and the other one I mentioned).

OB/GYN's disappointed me by recommending HRT or even hysterectomy, ALL because I simply had hormone imbalance-related Insomnia and Adrenal Fatigue.

PLEASE check with your doctor/naturopath BEFORE taking any of my above products/steps that work for ME.

This book is so informative and woman of all ages need to be educated on hormone balancing. Our hormones are connected to so many physical aspects of our lives that Dr. Lee's information is essential to living a happy, healthy, balanced life filled with quality. It is definitely informative and helps you to become aware of the fact that some of the symptoms that you have could be from a hormonal imbalance, thus balancing the hormones can bring healing. He also provides a resource section for further testing and information.

It is refreshing to have MD's publish a book this useful and insightful. Mainstream allopathic medicine has failed so many women in this regard in particular, to say nothing of the drug companies. Here is a gentle, common sense approach that works with the body instead of against it. As someone who's suffered for several years from adrenal fatigue (also a failure of mainstream medicine for diagnosis and treatment), to read of the connection between estrogen dominance and adrenal drain resonated immediately. There is not a thing in this book that goes against a woman's intuition about her own health; there is an instinctive wisdom that can't help but be beneficial. NOTE: Too much of anything isn't good, and the book addresses this as well. Bad side effects are not a failing of natual pregesterone creams, but "operator error." Work either with a naturopath or doctor well-informed on integrative or holistic medicine if you have any concerns.

I am about to order more copies for my female friends and family members. This information is too valuable to be missed.

This guy is a whack job! I'm all for the natural remedies. I like to think I have an open mind and I started the book thinking I would like to try some of his suggestions. This book is lecturing on the world today and how pesticides are ruining your body and everything around us. Birth control? Don't use any! Yeah, that's normal. I'll be sure to tell my 18 year old son that as he walks out the door tonight. "Honey, if you choose to have sex, make sure you have her check her temperature and cervical mucus otherwise...." No thanks! Oh, and don't forget the progersterone cream which is a cure-all for everything from heavy periods to cancer. I don't know if he has a contract with every company that sells this stuff but I can't think of any other reason he's pushing it so hard. Seriously, every chapter mentions it at least 5 times. ANNOYING!

I have been in perimenopause for about a year now and sufferring miserably. I have been to three different Obgyn's most of whom wanted to immediately put me on some sort of hormone replacement therapy either on the pill or on heavy doses of prometrium (a progesterone steriod) or do a hysterectomy, all this without doing any testing of my hormone levels. I wanted to know if there were any natural alternatives to any of these suggestions--they bascially looked at me as if I were a nut job and said no==not that they knew of--I went in search of some answers and found Dr Lee's book. It is clear and concise and incredibly informative. It assumes the reader wants to take responsibility for her own healthcare and wants to find a doctor to partner with that has the same assumption. It gives you the information and scientific evidence for putting your body into hormonal balance naturally and through a balanced diet supplemented by vitamins herbs and exercise and supplemental hormones. It does so without the bias of alleged scientific evidence backed by self interested pharmaceutical companies. He does not endorse any company or product but he was the pioneer in promoting progesterone cream as a means to hormonal balance and makes a strong case through his own practice in terms of the benefits of this approach. There has been some confusion by other reviewers of his book about what he is promoting so I want to clear that up.He does not promote bio-identical drugs which are those that are made by pharmaceutical companies and mimic natural ingredients and need to patented by pharmeceutical companies in order to be sold. He does promote the use of progesterone cream which is not a bio-identical as defined above. Dr Carolyn Dean who has written a few books on hormonal balance does a better job of explaining this in her books, Hormone Balance and Menopause Naturally. To summarize, this book is a great introduction into the bodily and emotionally changes that women go through in their premenopausal years and how to treat these changes naturally.

Reviewer Permalink
The overall message in this book is that maintaining good health as the years go by, is about keeping all aspects of your life in balance. Being female and in the premenopause category as defined by the authors, I found much in the book that I as well as my close female friends could identify with, both in terms of symptoms resulting from lack of balance, and the reasons why these symptoms arise. As a physician myself, I wholeheartedly agree with the authors' stance that these symptoms arising from a lack of balance in one's life cannot be solved by radical surgery and/or prescription hormones.
The information about substances that we use every day which can disturb the delicate biochemical balance that makes us function at an optimal level, was very eye-opening, and even a little frightening. Most people are unaware of the hidden dangers in a seemingly innocuous bottle of nail polish and nail polish remover.
The recommendations made are easily within the reach of any woman who is interested in embarking on the quest for balance. Although the use of the natural hormone progesterone is advocated, the authors state very clearly that this will only work in the long run if measures to achieve balance in other aspects of one's life (e.g. diet. stress management) are also implemented at the same time. It really is all about balance in all aspects of one's life. This is a good book for women who are not satisfied with the answers and solutions proposed by conventional western medicine to their very real problems at this stage of life.

I've never been the kind of person who would care about this kind of thing. But after a very frustrating year, I was extremely frustrated with my doctors. I'm in my early 30's(!) and have been having numerous symptoms that my doctors said weren't related and it couldn't possibly be premenapause because I'm WAY too young. Now, I am finally understanding how the numerous xeno-hormones and major stress are causing my premenapausal symptoms and I'm learning how to take better care of myself so that my body does NOT start this phase too early! It also talks about the difference between natural and synthetic hormones and how we are ALL exposed on a normal basis and how they build up. It was a little difficult at first with the medical jargon, but he continually reinforces and builds on his findings from his and others' research. It is AMAZING how little MY doctors know about this! You would think my OB/GYN would be well-versed in this area, but everything they gave me made my symptoms worse! So don't automatically assume that a doctor will hold all the answers to your health, you need to do your own research and be your own advocate! That way, you will at least be well-informed. On top of that, they simply wouldn't consider any natural remedies (anything that didn't require a perscription). I went and got some natural progesterone (this book tells you exactly what to look for) and within a week I could tell the difference. That and some life-style changes (less stress, better food) have made an enormous difference. Not only that, I just found out last week that I'm pregnant! If you are having problems in this area too, I highly recommend reading this book before you go to a fertility clinic!!

After multiple trips to the doctor regarding my weight gain, sluggishness, loss of libido and weird menstural cycle and getting no answers, I was recommended this book. I have been enlightened to learn that what I am experiencing is not so much a "medical problem", but a natural progeression towards menopause. The unpleasant symptoms of this are to a large extent controllable through diet, supplements and exercise. The book treats premenopause with respect and allows you to feel good about yourself instead of dreading the whole aspect as "an unfortunate part of getting old". My doctor wouldn't address the issue, but now I can go in and address it with him on my own terms.

This book really rocked my world. I had no idea what scam the Pharmaceutical companies had on us! I think every woman should read this book. Just becaus a doctor prescribes something for you does NOT mean it is good for you! Quite the opposite - in fact. I had to read the book twice, because the first go thru I was just shocked!

Dr. Lee and natural progesterone hormone creams have changed the lives of countless, countless women for the better. There are incredible amounts of xenoestrogens in our environment, chemicals that act on our bodies like estrogen. These are found in most petroleum based products (mineral oil, plastics, etc) and have an effect on our bodies that is subtle, yet can grow to be quite disruptive to our lives, and even deadly in some cases. The tragic death of Dana Reeve, a non-smoker with lung cancer, has brought to the forefront the fact that, of nonsmokers with lung cancer, 80% are WOMEN (source: USA Today, March 8th, Life section). This article even says that this is likely due to an estrogen effect.

Natural progesterone helps to keep hormones in balance in a woman's body. Synthetic progestin IS NOT THE SAME, does not work on the body in the same way, and should not be used for long periods of time. Why doesn't your doctor know about this? Because most of the information she/he gets is from the pharmaceutical companies. Pharma cannot patent a natural element like natural progesterone, so they can't make money off of it. Hence, they push the synthetic hormones which have proved to be detrimental to women's health.

PLEASE read Dr. Lee's book, and share with the women that you love. It is critical to your and their lifelong health and well-being.

All women need to read this and pass it on to their friends and family. This is not just for women aged 30-50. These problems we are experiencing are happening in our teenagers too! This is information everyone needs to know from the dangers of birth control to why 10 year olds are getting their periods so early. I have just started selling a great progesterone cream to help myself and the people I know. Like the book says, you will need to find a very good quality cream as they are not all created equal. Some will not work at all. Good luck!

I don't want to sound dramatic but I had been through 10 years of taking synthetic hormones and gaining 60 pounds because of them with worsening symptoms of anxiety and depression. I had horrible cycles and was subjected to horrible solutions! I am sleeping better, lost weight, cycles are normal, no anxiety, no carb cravings! I haven't felt this good in 10 years!

I purchased this book after it was recommended to a friend of mine.
While reading it I felt as if I had found the cure for my PMS and heavy/painful periods. I ran out and got some Natural Progesterone Cream that was recommended in the book, and started using it.
Well all I can say is to proceed with caution. After using it for just a short time, I began to have a re-occurance of my depression symptoms. I have since stopped using the cream and am slowly returning to my normal self. When I did a net search on the side effects of too much progesterone I found many people with my same experience. This book is very one sided, and he does not talk much about the negative aspect of using the cream.
Please consult with a physician before starting this stuff on your own, or at least be aware of the possible side effects so that you can stop the cream as soon as you see them. This book has helped many people, I guess. But I'm not one of them.

I wish I'd read this book a few years back - very informative and easy to read. It is always useful to get another perspective on healthcare. We're often at the mercy of our healthcare providers, who in turn are at the mercy of insurance ocmpanies. We can take more control over our healthcare, and sometimes what we need isn't a pharmaceutical, just some common sense.

(Hide Review...)  If you have a hormonal imbalances, read this book...

OMG!!! I could not put this book down... I am in my upper twenties and I am going thru a bunch of these symptoms already. Yes the book is bios about natural progesterone, so what... I have not personally used progesterone cream yet, because I am waiting for my saliva test results to make sure that's what I need. But even if I don't, everything else provided in the book is amazing information. Your diet, your vitamins, your stress level, your physical activity, everything is co-related to most woman's hormonal imbalances. They even talked about a case where a woman did not want to use the natural progesterone and how by changing all of the other stuff in her life, she achieved hormone balancing. If you are suffering from hormonal imbalances, I will strongly recommend this book. I also bought other ones that I will be reading after this one. But I started with "Be Lean by Romy Seleznov", which is a story from her life and how she struggled to balance her hormones and gives all the details of what she did, then I continued with this book, and the next one I will be reading is "Natural Hormone Balance for Women" by Uzzi Reiss, which does cite this book as well.

If you think you have a hormonal imbalance, please do not rely on your doctor 100%, I am not saying that you should not believe them or rule out everything they say, but do your homework. I have been telling my doctors since I am in my TEENS that I feel I have an imbalance with my hormones and since all of the results come back fine they have been telling me that my symptoms were "normal"... WRONG!!! Now they found a tumor in my pituitary gland, which causes an imbalance... The tumor grows slowly, so I am sure that it has been there for years, but they never checked it before. Now that I am treating it, all of my "normal" symptoms are almost gone. I am still on the process of getting everything in balance. If you feel you have something wrong, even if the results of your blood work comes as normal, READ more and look for healthy ways of changing your diet, exercising more, balance your hormones, and look for second opinions and definitely have a good naturopath that you can go to. Also "Bikram Yoga", is an excellent exercise to helping you with hormonal balancing. At least that's part of what I changed.

I hope this reviewed helped you and good luck finding what you are looking for!

here is step number one in that process. there are so many things that doctors do not tell you. this book is a plethora of information for every woman from age 30-50. to not be informed is to be frightened when the unknown is introduced. know your body--take charge of your health. a doctor cannot do this for you. the best way to beat breast cancer is prevention, not a mammography. natural progresterone cream is a great way to balance the changes that take place in a woman's body during these years. also look into xooma and coral calcium. i highly, highly recommend owning this book!
