Wall and Piece

Banksy, Britain's now-legendary "guerilla" street artist, has painted the walls, streets, and bridges of towns and cities throughout the world. Not only did he smuggle his pieces into four of New York City's major art museums, he's also "hung" his work at London's Tate Gallery and adorned Israel's West Bank barrier with satirical images. Banksy's identity remains unknown, but his work is unmistakableâ??with prints selling for as much as $45,000.

This book is great. Page after page after page of stencils and stories. There are so many things to look at, it's well-organized, and includes a little something to read on almost every page. Some of the things in this book made me laugh, and other pages really made me think about the world I live in. I guess that's the point.

If you want to get into stencil painting, this book will open your eyes and give you lots to think about.

it is interesting and entertaining. the stuff he does is really cool. some of them are a bit strange, but others are hilarious. he likes to make fun of various people and things, so someone who is a bobby, or british cop, might not like it as much. otherwise, he just does stuff for fun, such as writing "what are you looking at?" in front of a security camera. its fun to just look through the stuff he's done. he is an amazing artist. and very creative guy.

If you know Banksy, you know everything he has ever done is worth 5 stars. But in case you are concerned about their presentation, this book goes far to present his work with beautiful imagery and insightful commentary from the Banksy, itself!!

If you do not know Banksy yet and you enjoy stencil, symbolism, absurdism, political art, graffiti or taking risks to prove a point- just buy this book, you will not regret it!

I purchased this book after Banksy's wall sold on Ebay for near $400,000! I was intirgued to see more and found the book to be quite interesting. For an art book virgin it is interesting and a great piece of pop culture. I would recommend it to anyone-but caution that it is probably not appropriate for young children due to some of the content.

"Nobody ever listened to me until the didn't know who I was"
- Banksy

I've always been a fan of street art. I am not going to argue that every tag is beautiful, but some definitely are, and I anyone to point out a visual medium that engages the public more than graf.

Still, a lot of it is pretty boring. Kids writing their names on walls can only hold one's interest for so long. Banksy, on the other hand, is a lot of things. Childish, hilarious, often time brilliant, but never boring. He is the most important street artist working today, and I highly recommend you at least look at this expensive art book in the store. It's amazing.

Using stencils, balloons, posters, markers, traffic cones and whatever else comes to hand, he has created some amazing work. He has hung his own works in major art museums, and he traveled to Palestine to do a number of works on thewall that separates the West Bank from Israel.

The work isn't always good. Some of it is just childish, and some of it is standard graffiti where he's just pissing on a wall to mark his space, but some of it is down right genius.

Banksy is a serious artist who doesn't take himself all that serious. Check out this book, and I am sure you'll be impressed.

I've been familiar w/ Banksy's graffiti work for years, but never knew he was responsible for so many of the iconographic images that are shown throughout this book. He challenges people's perceptions and turns 'public art' into a post-Andy Warhol comment on modern society. The design and layout is also well thought through. Well worth browsing or buying if you are willing to think about what his art is saying.

Wall and Piece is a fantastic coffee-table conversation point to have, after the disappointment of Extencilism due to it's tiny size, Wall and Piece was a joy to get hold of - containing art both of funny and black humour, and a good 100 pages or so. Contains a good spread of Banksy's work... before the council drones got to it!

This book is great. I've been a graff writer for years, and this is one of those head-turners that caught my eye at the bookstore and I thumbed threw it and had to have it. Bomb style stencil pieces not unlike that from sheppard ferry "OBEY".

If you like Graff/Street art this is a must have!

(Hide Review...)  Captivating introduction to the powers of public art
Reviewer Permalink
In this book is an excerpt from a letter in which a young man asks Banksy to stop stenciling his childhood neighborhood because it makes the area seem hip and Yuppies are moving in, raising housing prices such that this young man cannot buy a house here. Banksy's book is filled with inspiring, hilarious, and very intelligent statements accompanied by witty captions, but his work is the kind that speaks 1000 words by themselves. A true public artist, Bansky also offers his tips on how to take a town by storm in only one night. The art in this book is a response often times to public advertising; it is essentially a way for the public to respond to the ads that we are forced to see. A great and intriguing book.

This is an amazing book full of beautiful pictures of some of the best stencil street art in the world. Banksy's tongue in cheek humour never ceases to bring a smile to your face and a lit bottle of gasoline to your throwing arm.

It's a great book, one that definitely puts Banksy in its rightful place even in the minds of people that have no idea about urban art and art anarchism. Insight from Banksy himself, the hooded mistery, photographs of some of his most famous pieces, this book has it all. A must read for any and everyone.

Banksy, with its misterious aura, brings to the face of the society those things the society itself hides under the tapestry (as perfectly illustrated in his book). Even more if we're talking about Great Britain, or America.

Those that live in "3rd world" countries like Brazil (myself included) can appreciate even more this masterpiece of urban intervention. A must-have. Specially for the narrow-minded, conservative ones.

Banksy is one of the artists who elevates graffitti into a true artform. It's political, satirical, sometimes lyrical and often very pointedly amusing. This book contains some of the bext pieces done all over the world. The work that goes into planning and executing these works is staggering. Very engaging and an ideal gift for any artist or art fan.

Banksy is a political artist who has created pieces from the thought-provoking to the amusing, and usually somewhere in between. This book is complete with wonderful photos of his pieces, his own little quips and insights into his background and what inspires him.

I really liked this book, and I am not a fan of grafitti. But Banksy is a true artist, unlike the vast majority of those who deface public property. In short this book makes a good coffee table book that guests will be intrigued by - for at least the next 5 minutes anyway.
