Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World: 75 Dairy-Free Recipes for Cupcakes that Rule

The hosts of the vegan cooking show The Post Punk Kitchen are back with a vengeance — and this time, dessert. A companion volume to Vegan with a Vengeance, Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World is a sweet and sassy guide to baking everyone's favorite treat without using any animal products. This unique cookbook contains over 50 recipes for cupcakes and frostings — some innovative, some classics — with beautiful full color photographs. Isa and Terry offer delicious, cheap, dairy-free, egg-free and vegan-friendly recipes like Classic Vanilla Cupcakes (with chocolate frosting), Crimson Velveteen Cupcakes (red velvet with creamy white frosting), Linzer Torte Cupcakes (hazelnut with raspberry and chocolate ganache), Chai Latte Cupcakes (with powdered sugar) and Banana Split Cupcakes (banana-chocolate chip-pineapple with fluffy frosting). Included also are gluten-free recipes, decorating tips, baking guidelines, vegan shopping advice, and Isa's true cupcake anecdotes from the trenches. When Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World, no dessert lover can resist.

I am not a vegan, and am not easily excited about vegan baked goods. However I do have a best friend who is a committed vegan and who very much is excited by vegan baked goods. When I purchased this book for her as a birthday gift, she was beyond thrilled. I guess she had another vegan cookbook by this same author, and had already fallen in love with her recipes. (Who knew?)
She later made chocolate-strawberry-something cupcakes from this book, and when I tasted them, they really weren't half bad. If you didn't really think about it, you almost couldn't tell that they were vegan. If all vegan baked goods tasted like these cupcakes, maybe vegan cupcakes really could take over the world.
As she told me, "This book is as good as it gets!"

From the organizer of the first and second annual Santa Barbara vegan bake off:

I like to try lots of different baking books--vegan and non-vegan alike.

I was sitting down tonight with my King Arthur Baker's Companion (amazing but each recipe has at least a stick of butter in it) and even leafed through How it All Vegan (their choc chip recipe is pretty good) before I remembered I had picked up this little book. The book is well written and fun to look through. Perfect for those nights when you just want to make something fun after dinner without having to prepare with a ton of ingredients in advance.

I chose a red velvet cupcake recipe and a vegan cream cheese frosting.

What can I say, my boyfriend has already eaten half the batch so I must say it was a success!

My daughter has an egg and dairy allergy. It finally dawned on me to look at vegan recipes to find a way to make an edible dessert for her. These cupcakes are very easy and taste wonderful. You would never know there is no egg or dairy. I have tried the vanilla, chocolate, and peanut butter ones. The peanut butter cupcakes were the best ones I have ever had, vegan or not. I highly recommend this book.

It's a lovely book and will be a useful guide in getting the dairy out of baked goods, but I have to say I'm a bit stunned that a vegan cookbook is so full of white flour and white sugar. There are just so many healthier sweeteners and flours to use that I can't imagine why the recipes weren't developed to be really healthy instead of simply dairy free.

Amazing recipes, adorable pictures and even for the non vegan its a great book full of creative ideas and concepts for everyones childhood favorite snack!

I've made a variety of these recipes, and recipes from the authors other books and my family has loved them. Very flavorful and fun to make!

My only complaint is a good deal of the recipes include odd-ish items or somewhat expensive items. I live in a rural area where a great deal of vegan friendly products are hard/impossible to come by.

I've been baking a new recipe every week since I got this book! It's fantastic. The basic recipes alone would be enough to get you through any birthday party -- there's basic vanilla and chocolate, and frosting recipes for each. Just like Betty Crocker used to make, except there're no eggs or dairy. The vast majority of the ingredients are pantry standards for me, like sugar, salt, soy milk, flour. It's only for the more special recipes that I've had to search out some unique ingredients like maple extract or agar flakes, and an early introductory section helps you locate or substitute ingredients if need be. Once you get into the Classic and Fancy recipe sections, you realize how innovative the authors are and what a resource they've created. Carrot Cake, S'More, Tiramisu, Lemon Macadamia - these are just a few of the recipes I've tried, so far everything's been excellent. This book should be standard-issue for any new vegan: you get your B12 supplements, your pleather shoes, and your copy of Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World.

Read an article about this book in a newspaper and planned to buy it for a friend who's son is allergic to eggs, and ended up buying one for myself too! My family isn't vegetarian, but we don't eat a lot of meat, so didn't see any reason why we had to have eggs and milk in our cupcakes. Being a mom of a two and four year old - we love cupcakes, and this book makes making them soooo much fun, and positively delicious! Great photos and layout to boot!

This book is beyond amazing- it is the only cookbook that everything single thing I try works out everytime - EVEN if I alter the recipe a bit. Case in Point: the sexy low-fat vanilla muffin recipe was so great that I decided to try, using your cupcake recipe as a guide, and make raspberry muffins (using wholewheat flour and a less sugar) and they were the best muffins I ever tasted- ever!. So, thanks again Isa & Chandra, VCTOTW impressed me so much, I just bought your Veganomicon book- cant wait to have fun w/ all your creative recipe creations. Ive been veggie since I was 11 yrs old (a long time); vegan cuisine (thanks in large part to you two) is maturing and coming into a new era of sophistication. [This Aint the veggie cookbook from 20 yrs ago- lemme tell ya!]

We bought this book because our daughter has an egg allergy. The chocolate cupcakes are perfect (I did use whole milk instead of soy but I'm sure soy would be great too). Everyone who has tried them can't believe that they are egg-less and it actually tastes just as good as my Mom's chocolate cake (with dairy) that has been a family favorite forever. I do eat dairy but I would choose to make the chocolate cupcakes over regular chocolate cake recipes any day. Can't wait to try more!

This book looks full of great delicious looking cupcake recipes and also offers useful tips throughout the book. The author's experience is obvious in the helpful tips. It offers ganauche, basic icing recipes that you can vary throughout the book: it's simple, organized, and straightforward. However, non-hydrogenated shortening and non-hydrogenated margerine are staples in the icing which is brilliant but I don't know where to find non-hydrogenated shortening. Otherwise there are no really specialty items to buy. It looks really good.. i haven't tried it yet. But there are just enough pictures... not on every single page like some other overpriced modern-looking cookbooks... but just enough to show the important stuff. I want to buy Veganomicon now.

I was a strict vegan for many years, now an omnivore. But I still prefer to bake like a vegan--not so much for health reasons, but I find it easier, challenging and fun at the same time. I borrowed the book from the library to try it, and will definitely be purchasing it for myself.

So far we've made the Vanilla Cupcakes with Fluffy Vanilla Buttercream, and the Cookies and Cream Cupcakes...both way better than any non-vegan cupcake I've made in my life!

The buttercream frosting recipe alone is worth the price of the book. It's the first time i've made perfect, spreadable, delicious buttercream frosting. And the chocolate cupcake recipe is divine, and as the authors suggested, I'll be making those without frosting for quick little chocolate cakes.

The authors' troubleshooting suggestions are helpful too; it had been a long time since i'd attempted cupcakes, but I felt confident when following their advice. A well-done, fun, cute book, with fantastic recipes.

These recipes are great! I have only done the basics so far. Chocolate and vanilla, then I tried them with variation and made the cookies N cream and the lemon versions. There are many recipes in this book, then at the end of each recipe they give you variations. So fun! The frostings are great too! Closest to the "real" thing then any others I have tried. I made a batch of V & C for easter and they were a hit! Everyone was so impressed that they are better for you than traditional cupcakes and they taste amazing. I reccomend this book for all people. (Hide Review...)  Fantastic! Vegan or not, if you own ONE cupcake book, this one should be it

Let's start by saying that I'm not a vegan or even a vegetarian, but I do have an intolerance to dairy and wheat, and so do both my daughters.

Let's also say that while I consider myself a good cook, until recently my experiences with baking had been somewhat disappointing. I decided to change that, especially because of my oldest daughter. There seems to be a birthday, bake sale or celebration of some kind every other week at her school, and I wanted her to be able to enjoy something without the stomach upset that almost invariably follows dairy and wheat consumption. I decided to start with cupcakes because they are less threatening than cake (to me, the inexperienced baker) and kids love them (and so do most adults).

I chose this book based on the reviews, and I am very glad I did! I have now made cupcakes a few times and I am very happy with the results. I was able to make very good vegan, gluten-free vanilla cupcakes for a school celebration and absolutely scrumptious sugar-free (agave-sweetened) chocolate cupcakes for a brunch, and got rave reviews both times.

The book gives very clear instructions in the recipes, clear explanations of the ingredients to chose in the introductory section, and it even includes troubleshooting tips for all of us new to baking cupcakes, which are absolutely brilliant because I was able to immediately pinpoint and correct the reason why my first cupcakes had sunk (oven temperature).

The book also features numerous recipes that range from the classic cupcakes like Vanilla and Chocolate, to some very fun, made-to-impress recipes like Cookies 'n' Cream Cupcakes, Tiramisù Cupcakes and Chocolate Cherry Crème Cupcakes (and more) to the adventurous and interesting like Green Tea Cupcakes with Green Tea Glaze and Almond Flowers, Chai Latte Cupcakes or Pistachio Rosewater Cupcakes, sure to attract attention at your next party and make you known as "the one with the delicious cupcakes" from the very first time around.

If I had one issue with this book would be that the recipes include a bit too much sugar, but I was quickly mollified by the fact that the authors include clear instructions to modify the recipes so they can be made with Agave Syrup instead - and also include a recipe for Agave-sweetened vanilla or chocolate cupcakes, and one for Agave-sweetened icing. I also appreciate that they included a recipe for gluten-free cupcakes, thereby giving some guidance for adventurous cooks who are ready to modify the other recipes in the book the same way.

So for all these reasons (and more, because I'm peretty sure I forgot something!), I give this book 5 stars, a rare occurrence but fully deserved!!

This was the first cookbook I bought after going vegan. I always turn to one of these trusty little recipes when I find someone in my life who thinks vegans can't have anything tasty. I love the pictures in this book too! Since making your food look as good as it tastes is very important (IMO), I found the abundance of pretty photos inspiring. However, not every recipe gets its picture shown, and even though that's normal in cookbooks, I find it unforgivable in desert books!
I couldn't give this a perfect score because I selfishly wanted more pictures, recipes and there's the whole issue with Isa not really being vegan. I would have past this book by if I would have known ahead of time that one of the authors eats animal products whenever the fancy strikes her. It just seems a bit hypocritical to be making money projecting yourself as something you're not.

I bought this after I got the Veganomicon as a gift. Yep, I'm not a vegan or vegetarian (yet?) but was so impressed with the dessert recipes in the Veganomicon that I wanted more.

This cupcake book definitely delivers. I'm no chef, but with all the delicious, easy and unique recipes in here I could start a bake sale revolution. :)

Some products used in a few recipes are harder to find than others - particularly for someone who is not used to shopping vegan, such as agar agar and some alternative flours, but there are so many other fantastic cupcake recipes, I haven't even needed to experiment with those yet.

This is highly recommended for delicious cupcakes with a twist. I particularly love the low fat vanilla cupcakes... perfect for my struggling-to-stay-health-conscious family.

Have a vegan or vegetarian friend who's tough to shop for? Know someone whose New Year's Resolution is to eat healthier? This book makes a great gift for those of us who want to have an animal-free diet, yet don't want to exist on gruel and granola! This is a fun and well-written guide to feeding your sweet tooth on a plant-based diet that doesn't taste like the bark and sticks carnivores accuse you of subsiting on. This book shows you that a cruelty-free diet can still be fun and exciting, as well as a little indulgent; while keeping your conscience clear and even fooling some of those out there that think vegans only eat tofu.

(Hide Review...)  AWESOME! Best vegan baking book EVER
Reviewer Permalink
I have used many vegan books for baking and this is the best! I have made the carrot cake, chocolate and red velvet so far and they were all delish. I have served them for my daughter's birthday and preschool class which requires them to be dairy, egg and nut free for the kids with allergies. They all loved them, as does the teacher and all the parents. I've made the vegan cream cheese frosting - delicious! and the vegan buttercream - also wonderful. As far as I can tell, these recipes are fool proof - they were obviously extensively tested. I did get an oven thermometer as recommended since I have an old oven, there was a 25 degree difference, FYI. Another note - I sub all the AP flour for a mix of spelt and kamut as we do not eat white flour - they still come out perfectly, I just reduce the cooking time by about 2 minutes so that they are not dry.
** After reading the other reviews, I felt compelled to add a few notes:
1. even though the introduction is extensive, you can skip all that information and still make awesome cupcakes.
2. The only things that I use to make these are two bowls, one large, one medium, a spatula or large spoon, measuring cups, measuring spoons, a cupcake pan (which I usually just spray with non-stick/flour), the oven, and the ingredients.
3. regarding ingredients - almost everyone has flour, oil, vanilla extract, cocoa powder, powdered sugar, baking soda and baking powder. At least, if you bake, you do. The other flavor cupcakes (like green tea) require specialized ingredients, but they are specialized cupcakes, so that's to be expected. With the exception of ganache, most of the frostings require either Earth Balance, vegan shortening or better than cream cheese - something along those lines... but most vegans who bake have these things around anyway. Some of the extracts require a special trip to the store, but usually you can just add more vanilla, unless it's an itegral flavor (like orange in orange - chocolate cupcakes).
4. Regarding the "health" of the recipes... they are cupcakes. If you want something *totally* healthy, then you need a muffin cookbook, not a cupcake book. You could certainly make substitutions for the oil and reduce the sugar... but they are meant to be cupcakes :)
5. EVERYONE who has eaten one of these cupcakes has loved it, and that includes my carnivore sister who didn't have ANY idea that they were free of eggs and dairy.

Reviewer Permalink
This little book is worth it's weight in gold. I am not a vegan but we have multiple food allergies in our family, including dairy and eggs. Since this book is for vegans, none of the recipes contain animal products, which takes care of the egg and milk issues. In addition, this book offers all kind of information on substitutions of different flours, sweeteners and non-dairy items like nut and rice milks. Some recipes are gluten-free as well. I found this book more helpful than the dozen others I have that are written for people with allergies! The recipes are delicious and you would never know they didn't contain the "usual" ingredients. The book is also written in a very entertaining and quippish way, which makes it more friendly to we less experienced bakers. I would highly recommend this book to anyone trying to prepare a dairy and egg-free sweet treat. My only suggestion to the authors would be to add stevia to the list of alternative sweeteners.

I bought this book after buying VwaV as I was extremely impressed with the cupcakes from that one. VCTotW is better than I imagined. The book is nicely laid out with full color photos and easy-to-follow instructions. I have already tried four recipes and every one of them turned out wonderfully. Vegans can now indulge in genuinely delicious desserts (not just "vegan" delicious).

This is the cutest and most well put together recipe book I have yet to encounter. Who can go wrong with cupcakes? Well, a few people can technically...but who can go wrong with VEGAN cupcakes? No one!!! This book has several great vegan cupcake recipes with great photography and informative and fun recipes. Definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested.

I have so far made the 'Rosewater pistachio', 'Chai latte' and 'Green tea' cupcakes and shared them with many friends; none of which were vegan except me, but nodody even knew the difference. In fact, I would go so far as to say that animal products are simply unnecessary to make a fabulous cupcake! This book has 75 + recipes, all of which are very tantalizing and pretty simple to make. Who doesn't smile when they are given a cute little cupcake? Vanilla and chocolate are so boring compared to all the delectable flavors they have. I'm going to bake the 'Lychee with coconut glaze' cupcakes this weekend, can't wait! Get this book, even if you're not vegan.

This book is perfect in every way. Not only does it perfect the classic cupcakes like chocolate and vanilla, but the other ideas that Terry and Isa came up with, like the apple cider and pistachio-rosewater varieties, are so creative and amazing. Before I got this book, I had only thought about cupcakes as something that went along with a 6-year-old's birthday--now I make cupcakes for almost every party and potluck I attend. And with options like gluten free and low-fat included, everyone in my social circle is happier for my having discovered this gem.

I make cupcakes from this book for every event that I attend where I need to bring food. I have yet to meet anyone who can tell that the cupcakes are vegan. When I tell them, they let me know I'm doing a great job on breaking vegan-food stereotypes! The recipes are easy to follow and the book is well written. I most definitely recommend this book!

these cupcakes make my world go round. I first made them craving delicious baked goods as a new vegan- I divided the recipe by 3 to make 4 cupcakes. It still worked perfectly! round, fluffly, moist cupcakes- I made the crimson velvet w cream cheese frosting. mmmmm.

I am not a vegan or a vegetarian, but I am an avid baker, was fasting (from animal products) last year for a few months, and wanted to bake myself a few treats. I had tried some vegan baking from another vegan cookbook, with very mediocre results. I ordered this book, and it is one of gems of my cooking library. These cupcakes are so delicious, you will wonder how you survived without them. I took a few batches to my office, and no one would believe that these were vegan cupcakes. I dare say that these are even better than cupcakes made with butter, eggs, etc.

The cookbook has great pictures, lots of variations to keep you amused, and is quite fun to read. Whether you are vegan or not, if you want to bake up some great cupcakes, give this cookbook a try. Delicious!

I also have her "Vegan with a Vengance" cookbook and the chocolate chocolate chip pancakes are the best I've ever had.
