First Betsy Taylor loses her job, then she's killed in a car accident. But what really bites is that she can't seem to stay dead. And now her new friends have the ridiculous idea that Betsy is the prophesied vampire queen, and they want her help in overthrowing the most obnoxious power-hungry vampire in five centuries.

Undead and Unwed is not the typical book I would pick up and read but I am so glad that I did. It is hilarious, quirky and well-written. Usually highly erotic books are not my thing but this one is so much fun and the erotic scenes are critical to the storyline and so hot! Such an enjoyable read!

I've been reading vampire books since before they were popular, and I've read every vampire series I've come across.
Everything from Vampirates to Anne Rice and everything else including the popular Twilight saga, The Vampire Diaries, and the Sookie Stackhouse series. I thoroughly enjoyed every other series I've encountered, delighting in all the different vampire interpretations each author presented. I'm sad to say that this series was dry and not very funny as it was advertised to be. The characters weren't very likeable and the writing wasn't very polished, I felt like I was reading a high school manuscript. I only read the first book, because I just couldn't bear to read one more word, and honestly it was a struggle to even finish the book. I gave it two stars for the original story line. I love vampire stories. I also love comedies. This series (I'm on the third of the series) combines the two, with steamy scenes thrown in for good measure. I love the Sookie Stackhouse novels as Sookie has quite a feisty wit, but Vampire Queen Betsy takes it over the top with her sarcastic wit. The writing is light and funny, which is quite refreshing for vampire stories, which are usually dark and brooding. I wouldn't advise this for teenage readers as there is quite a bit of profanity and sex, but the gore and violence are minimal - some might say non-existent. If you like light reading, a good laugh, vampire stories without the gore and excessive violence, you might want to give this a try.

It's a good thing this is the first in a series, because I am looking forward to reading the rest of them.
It's light reading, as you might imagine from the cover - very silly. I can imagine MaryJanice Davidson giggling while writing this, and possibly drinking plum wine. If you're looking for something deep or edgy, keep looking. If you think that a vampire eating a handkerchief to make a point might be funny, you're browsing the right book. I like the overall idea of this book (young, modern day woman becomes vampire queen - the ensuing adventure ideas are nearly limitless), but the style of writing was horrendous. The main character and her friends are immature and obnoxious with outdated, insulting humor in every single interaction/narrative. I read just over halfway through the book and threw it in the trash. I kept hoping it would catch its stride (for me, that is - I see that most people enjoyed this book), but it did not. I loved the Sookie Stackhouse series, but definitely wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.

I have to say I loved this book. Funny and witty and just whole new take on the vampire genre. I can't wait to read the rest of the books in the series. Betsy is not only funny, but a strong person who doesn't take crap off anyone. Very good book, I would highly recommend anyone reading.

My sincerest apologies to the author in advance, but this book was awful!
I bought this book, as many readers said that if you liked the Sookie Stackhouse series (my guilty pleasure), you would like this. Well, I did not! Unfortunately, it was so awful, after 5 painful days and many valiant attempts of trying to read it, I finally gave up at page 162. The ongoing snarky, negative comments, which never ceased, were annoying and counted for an abundance of unnecessary dialogue. Betsy's continual snarling of the names of enemies became a joke that got old and fast, and yet, managed to continue throughout the book...Sink Lair? Noseo? The language was so juvenile, I felt like I was back in high school surrounded by bitchy catty comments, parent issues, and everyone having a crush on the big bad guy. The author attempts to deal with two controversial topics (Homosexuality and PETAs and its actions) but it falls flat and short, and feels ackwardly out of place. Betsy is crude, rude, bitchy, catty, and negative. Betsy's character reminds me of a cheese grater that is too close to my nerves, and if she were here, I would stake her myself. While I can never get those hours of my life back, and I can't return the book to get my money back, I have found a second life for it as compost, where it can truly be appreciated for what it really is: Bacteria food. Betsy Taylor is not the typical vampire queen. And her superficiality is hysterical. The cast of characters introduced here are pretty funny. I didn't think this was the typical para-romance. It was a lot lighter on the romance then some of the stuff I have pulled out of the Sci-Fi section of my book store. It's great to see the uniqueness of the queen in relation to the other vamps here - so that's a nice change of pace. Normally, it's pretty difficult to find unique points to the stories in this genre.
Seeing how Betsy becomes queen was interesting. It was also nice to not have that whole "I think I love you but am too traumatized by something terrible in my past to admit it/you could never love a monster like me you're too fragile and beautiful" dialogue going on over and over (like most of the books in this genre). At the same time, that pulled some of the romance out of it. The group that becomes Betsy's entourage are great peripheral characters. We get enough about them to feel invested in them and to like them. The "good vamps" are endearing - even if "good" really isn't the right word for them. As for the bad guy - Nostro - well, we don't really get enough development to feel anything about him, so we have to take it for granted that he really is a bad guy. But it's not hard to accept based on what we are told about them. The writing - it's funny. But definitely not the worlds greatest novel. These are some of the quickest reads ever. And I did find myself sometimes skimming paragraphs that were too outrageous, even for the world's most vain vampire. And the shoes thing... well... I totally don't get that. It makes Betsy pretty unique, but seem like one of the most moronic main characters to ever take center stage in one of these books. The fact that they are told in from her first-person point of view makes her a little tough to read sometimes without simply skimming. I think she is funny enough to keep reading the series though. And I am eager to see what happens between her and Sinclair. There is clearly more to him and what he knows then what is revealed in this first book. I didn't think I'd like reading a "vampire book" but this wasn't what I thought at all. It's more of a cute, fun story that will make you laugh out loud. I already read the next two books in the series, and am looking forward to the rest!

I love this book! It was laugh out loud funny!
If you are looking for something in the vampire genre that has Elizabeth Bevarly or Janet Evanovich type charter you'll love Betsy. She maybe shallow and have a shoe fetish but she is also loyal and kind hearted. Eric Sinclair is just as hot as Eric Northman and Bill Compton! I highly recommend for a fun take your mind off life read. (Review Data Last Updated: 2010-04-14 07:17:14 EST)

I'll admit I expected not to like this book. I don't like flighty shallow heroines, and I'm very picky when it comes to comedy in books. I'm sorry to say this book didn't really prove me wrong.
It's the first person account of Betsy becoming a vampire. Betsy seems dimwitted and self absorbed, but to give her credit she does have a good sense of humor. At first it was mildly amusing to read about her "death", and subsequent inability to truly die. That lasted about 50 pages. Then the evil stepmother showed up, having stolen Betsy's shoes after she "died" and I lost interest. Aside from the fact that the constant naming of brands (she goes on and on about the shoes!) was driving me crazy, I just couldn't deal with the simplistic characterization and melodrama. My impression of this book was that it's a lot like a soap opera, but with a vampire as our person of interest. To some this may be appealing, and if your looking for a mindless laugh I'd say go for it. Not for me, though. (Review Data Last Updated: 2010-02-28 01:59:57 EST)

I happened across the Queen Betsy series while looking for something to fill the void until the next Sookie Stackhouse mystery. Betsy is so ridiculously clueless that it keeps you laughing and there are enough twists thoughout the series to keep you captivated otherwise. If you're a Buffy fan, you'll love Betsy. Long Live the Queen!

This was an extremely funny story, unlike any vampire book I've ever read! It starts out with Betsy, short for Elizabeth, telling the readers about the worst day of her life. "The day I died started out bad and got worse in a hurry." It's her birthday, she gets fired from her job, her cat runs away, a freak snowstorm in April cancels her birthday party, and she gets hit by a car and killed. The problem is that she just can't stay dead!
Betsy is so unlike ANY other vampire I've ever read about! Picture the main character of legally blond, add a good portion of that annoying 7 year old that enjoys bugging everyone, (example: Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?) and you get Betsy. She's so annoying, and ditzy that you just have to laugh at the things that she says and does. Plus her mind takes her off on these tangents that have nothing to do with the situation at hand, and they happen at the most inconvenient times. Sometimes it's like you just want to slap her and say, "Hey! ADD girl, focus! Someone is trying to hurt you; it's not the right time to be thinking about your shoes!" Throughout the entire series, I'm constantly wondering what else can possibly happen to this girl. Anyways, I thought that the book was extremely funny! Of course, part of that might have been that I was listening to it on audio book, and the actor played the part of a spoiled, ditzy blond perfectly! If you are looking for a good laugh, read these books! (Review Data Last Updated: 2010-02-06 02:49:21 EST)

but finished the book very disappointed. The concept is great, the story wasn't that bad, the writing was very juvenile and at times just wore me down. I would have loved this book when I was 14 or 15.
I took the advice of another reviewer and bought Charlaine Harris book. Much better choice for me. (Review Data Last Updated: 2010-01-13 06:49:56 EST)

I couldn't stop laughing. Total homerun, way out of the park. This book is Vampire chick lit, in a good way. For humor, I rate this book and, in fact, this whole series up with the Spellman Files by LIsa Lutz, which made me laugh constantly. The Spellman Files: A Novel For other good vampire humor see Christopher Moore, especially his novel, You Suck You Suck: A Love Story. Or if you want funny with a female protagonist and haven't read the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich, then you need to start there.

I first picked this book up at the library and couldn't put it down! Within the first sentence I was hooked. My favorite part is when she goes and gets all of her Manolos, Pradas, Guccis, Fendis and Ferragamos from her stepmother who thought she was dead so she stole all of her expensive shoes! Her mother doesn't care that she's dead just that's she's back and her dad couldn't be more scared of her! And then there is sexy Eric Sinclair and even though he's a vamp sex appeal just rolls off of him. You also have the side kicks Jessica and Marc who fight with each other over the attention of our Queen Betsey. It's a great series pick it up!!!

I tried, I really tried to enjoy this book. As someone mentioned before, I was trying to fill the void left by Charlaine Harris, but this just made me feel worse. I just couldn't get into the way the book was written. It was corny, the author tried to hardto make EVERYTHING funny. It really wasn't necessary to spell out so much of the dialogue. Who needs to read out the sound of the cat meowing? reeeeeeeeeeeeeeoooooowwww??????? It was just overdone for my taste, hard to find romance in so much corny dialogue.

MaryJanice Davidson takes her characters and brings them to life...and death, to create a world that the reader finds interesting and hilarious all at the same time. Betsy is down-to-earth and matter-of-fact. I just don't know what else to say except the Queen Betsy books are must reads!

In Book 1 of MaryJanice Davidson's Queen Betsy series, Undead and Unwed, Betsy Taylor has had a horrible day. First, she loses her job as a secretary. Then, when she gets home and goes outside to retrieve her cat, she is hit by a car and instantly killed. So that's the end of everything... right?
Not exactly. Betsy wakes up in her own coffin, dressed in a cheap pink suit and horrible shoes all courtesy of her gold-digging stepmother. It seems that thanks to a late night attack outside of a Mongolian restaurant, Betsy is now a vampire. As she is soon to find out, not just any vampire. She is, in fact, the supposed Queen who has been prophesied to free the vampires from their current leader, an iron fisted man named Nostro. She doesn't believe it at first and only wants to live her undead unlife the same as she lived her life, including shopping for expensive, designer shoes. But it is hard to ignore that not only is she unlike humans, but she is different from other vampires, too. Men and dogs are drawn to her, conventional weapons such as crosses and holy water are ineffective, and she doesn't need to feed nightly as other vampires do. She is extraordinary for a vampire, which gives credence to the claim that she is meant to be the Queen. Undead and Unwed isn't one of those serious `the plights of a new vampire' type novels. There's no Louisesque pondering of the soul and spirit, that `mortal coil' that is referenced. No, this book will have you laughing from page one. You are drawn in by the utter insanity of this poor young woman's life, by her failed attempts at self-annihilation, and her personal opinions about what she has become. Because, really, how would your every day girl feel about suddenly becoming a vampire? It would be a little surreal, yes, but I also think anyone would react the way Betsy did: with a logical, "nu-uh!" Though I have to admit that sometimes I was frustrated by Betsy's inability to be serious or mature for even a moment. The conversations had throughout the novel were nothing more than witty banter back and forth... I don't think anyone had a serious conversation the entire book without something `clever' being said somewhere in retort. I like the book a lot, but I do hope that as Betsy gets used to being a vampire, especially as Queen, she matures a bit and cares a little less about sarcasm and shoes and a little more about the big picture. I don't know if I would want someone who can't so easily look below the surface of a situation as my Queen! But, hey, that is what development is for and none of us is perfect, right? Betsy provides a lot of amusement and laughs, so I have to think her for that even as I sometimes wanted to strangle her. I mean none of the above as criticism, don't get me wrong, because I loved the book. And I like a character that is imperfect because, come on, how many annoyingly perfect leading female characters are there out in the world of literature? Too many. We need a good, ultimately heart-warming but superficial shoe lover to remind us that some characters can be great and entertaining without being perfect. I hope that the next book is as much fun as the first. And, of course, that she continues to both love and loath Sinclair. It would totally ruin the fun if they get all lovey so soon. I really enjoyed the two of them mutually disliking but wanting each other. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-09-24 02:36:52 EST)

Ok, I've never written a review that I gave 1 star. But here it is. The main character is shallow...so shallow, in fact (SPOILER ALERT*******) that other characters must purchase a pair of expensive designer shoes to convince her to fight the main big bad guy...sigh. No amount of suffering and pain of others would get her to fight this guy, but you put designer shoes on the table, and whoooo booooy, get out of her way...
There is no explainable reason for her friends to stick by her, nor is there any explicable reason for the main dude to LOVE her (somehow, they skipped any form of attraction or dating, and he is in LOVE) she is rude, selfish and (as previously mentioned) shallow. I wouldn't hang out with someone who had, truely, no redeeming qualities, so why would I want to read about one? I will admit that I did read about five books into the series, to give it a fair shot, but things never really got any better. The heroine never grows as a person. Save your money. I thought this book was entertaining, funny, and I find it a little truer to vampire life as we use to know it (not like biting sets off venom). I loved the hero in the book "Sinclair" - he makes it worth reading (at times he can be a rascal - butt can't we all). Betsy can be a pain at times but the couple works when it comes to sparks flying. I am so far definitely a fan.

I started reading this book after finishing the Sookie Stackhouse books. I choose it because I wanted something that was light hearted with humor without the dark anthology theme you usually get with some of the paranormal books.
I found this book to be quite humorous at times, but irritating at the same time on how conceited and condescending she could be. If you can overlook some of her flaws it's really not a bad read, but defiantly not as good as Sookie. I do plan on reading the next book. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-05-09 01:26:09 EST)

Buffy meets Sex and the City.
Former blonde (dyed) ex-model, Elizabeth Taylor--Betsy, if you please--now laid off secretary, is having the week from hell. Besides getting run over like roadkill, she can't seem to stay dead. And boy, has she tried everything. After a few dozen attempts at suicide, she finally gives in, and just says, 'Fine. I'm a vampire. Now what?' Yes indeed, what to do? What to do when you realize you're dead and you can't die (again), even when you try, or when all of a sudden, you're so thirsty and 'hungry' yet human food makes you puke, or when your BFF, billionaire heiress Jess, and your new BF, suicidal Dr. Marc, think you're the next SuperVamp 2000, or when the wannabe version of Count Dracula (think Dracula: Dead and Loving It) wants you as his slave, OR the fact that every vampire rule/law/cliche does. not. apply. to you? And oh--the fact that the mere scent of blood unleashes her new dentition to the world, which--ahem--tends to make her lisp. Betsy, aka Queen Betsy, the prophisized vampire to rule them all, decides fairly easily. She isn't gonna play by any rules but her own. And not even sexy Sinclair of the rival faction, who wants to woe and win her over to his side, can change her mind. Not even an offering of himself, or when he throws in a few pairs of designer shoes-- Well...maybe just a smidgen. It has been so long since I last laughed at something or just found so many parts funny in a book, a vampire romance novel no less! Davidson has the pulse on humor while mixing it with a good dose of what it's like to become a vampire, all the weirdness and the fact that maybe blood-sucking isn't all that it's cracked up to be. Then again... :). The dialogue predominates, which, for most books, doesn't work because using dialogue to propel action as well as describe what's going on is a rare talent--one of which Davidson excels at. Her language and style is vivid and imaginative, plain yet provocative, while making it realistic enough for you to feel an affinity to the main characters--especially Betsy, who may be no Einstein in the closet, but knows how take everything with a dose of realty, and some Prada shoes. Don't take this book seriously (the first of a series! Yay!). There is slapstick comedy, a few parts that will annoy some of you, and for some, again, the dialogue will seem aimless and long-winded, but beyond that, the story itself was well structured, with a smart concept, good execution and again, no holds bar humor. That that was the surprising of all--character development (though nothing which'll blow your mind or too dimensional, but an actual arch is there), not a bad plot, smooth pacing, funny-funny-funny as hell. The ending is not a big blow-out but the promise of more great story telling to come, and thank goodness! The whole thing is meant to be campy and fun, don't try to apply an Ann Rice-ish philosophy, Davidson isn't trying for that--she's going for pure peals of laughter. So just go with it and laugh! Sometimes a narrator can really make or break a book. In this instance Nancy Wu just blew it for me. I can't stand whiney voices and though she is trying to portray a whiney self centered character she just took it too far.
But -- the storyline, well that is different and the reason I added an extra star. The story is very well paced with a "don't know what's coming next" feel that has you laughing out loud. Not only is life challenging when you are named Elizabeth Taylor, but when you wake up after being hit by a car and you are in a coffin, wearing the ugliest clothes that your evil stepmother could dressed you in, life can only get better. Well, that is if you think being a Queen Vampire is better. Betsy isn't your usual vampire; she doesn't burn in the sun, can wear a cross and doesn't have to feed like the average vampire. This alone makes Nostro, the evil vampire leader, want Betsy dead, but with the help of a very desirable Eric Sinclair, they take on this dictator and total hilarity pursues. A wee bit adult at times, but still very funny and definitely a series to follow. But not on audio, I'll stick with the books. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-05-09 01:26:09 EST)

It's hard not to compare this book to the Charlaine Harris's Southern Vampire series, especially since so much of this seems ripped right out of those pages. Whether it's the huge, well-endowed hunk of a love interest (named Eric, which made me smirk) or the somewhat naive lead character, the watered down resemblance is sometimes a little startling. Vampire fiction is bound to have similarities, of course, especially when it's a vampiric universe with a light-hearted touch with which Harris excels and Davidson tries (very, very) hard to recreate. But this reads a lot like fan fiction, where someone has tried to capitalize on the Buffy and Sookie mania that has kept many in its grasp over the past several years.
The real difference is that Harris's series has depth and heart, even while her Sookie (the lead character) is a bit naive and occasionally dense. At least she's humble and real, unlike Davidson's Betsy Taylor. Admittedly, she does become a vampire, though she's a super special vampire with super special powers that makes her much more super special than all the other vampires that ever lived (existed?). Davidson wrings almost every moment into an almost-desperate yet flippant attempt for humor, destroying the scenes ripe with potential for real emotion (other than vanity, jealousy, horniness, and superiority). Even a sort of rape scene that sparked a bit of sympathy was ruined in--well, overwrought purple prose. Davidson took the worst of chick lit and tried to cram it into the cracked mold created by her talented predecessors. All that said, I gave it two stars because it did occasionally force a smile out of me, even a chuckle or two. I'm probably not going to read the rest of the series, however, unless I find myself extremely bored at work and download the audio versions available from my library. Save yourself some wasted hours and read Harris's Southern Vampire series if you want to read about vampires. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-05-09 01:26:09 EST)

i downloaded this book for my kindle after reading a book of short stories that Davidson contributed to. Queen Betsy was a minor character, but she cracked me up right from the get-go.
This was the perfect series for me after reading the southern vampire series by charlaine harris. They are totally different, but I love the quick wit and style that Davidson brings to the storyline, making fun of stereotypes, quick witted banter - very much in the vein (ack - i did it and i have no regrets :) of Buffy the Vampire Slayer series. It's not a deep, brooding vampire novel - but surely there are enough of those out there. Davidson was a change of pace, and my husband thinks I am a bit mad for constantly giggling to myself as I am reading - not that he's entirely wrong! Read it - it's good, clean - no, it's damn dirty fun!!! (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-05-09 01:26:09 EST)

I really REALLY wanted to like this book and had hoped this was a series to sink into now that I've finished all the Sookie Stackhouse books. Wrong. Betsy is nothing like Sookie - no brains, no brawn, no courage, no common sense... there is nothing about this character that earns my respect or interest and she's not really funny.
Scene after scene in the book has Betsy making fun of someone she doesn't know, assuming she is smarter and better than everyone she meets, taking advantage of her true friends, badmouthing her grieving parents after her death and resurrection, disposing of a friend's CDs because she personally doesn't care for HIS musical tastes, and in the end, Betsy essentially sells herself for shoes. Don't get me wrong, I am all for gorgeous handmade Italian shoes! Betsy's life revolves around her vanity AND she is a nitwit. That drove me crazy for the entire book. I kept hoping Sinclair would just stake her. I will pass on the rest of the books in this series. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-05-09 01:26:09 EST)

I really wanted to like this book. I've read and enjoyed many books in this genre, but Betsy is the worst kind of heroine. She's shallow, stupid, and hard to take. She loves shoes and has little respect for anything. Hardly anyone I want to read about and I wish I had my money back. If you haven't read the Sookie Stackhouse books, then read those instead. If you're a shallow shoe lover that thinks it's funny to insult other women because they need pedicures and if you want to cheer a heroine who cares so little for other's things that she throws a friend's classical CDs out of the window of the friend's car then... good luck.

I did not know what to expect when I opened Undead and Unwed. To be honest, I liked the cover and being a huge fan of Charlaine Harris (Sookie Stackhouse-books) and Stephenie Meyer (Twilight), I craved more vampire stories and was looking for something new when I stumbled upon this little book.
I loved this book. It was hysterical and I laughed out loud several times. I immediately fell in love with "Queen Betsy" and her entourage. We first meet "Elisabeth Taylor" before she is a vampire and get to go through her transformation with her, which is delivered with amazing humor (she "dies" on the day she looses her job and it is also her birthday...sucks, right!!?). Queen Betsy's love for shoes is the only reason she agrees to become the Queen, and maybe, just maybe Mr. Sinclair also plays a part!!! I am also a shoe addict which is probably what made me connect so well with the main character. It is a little on the naughty side, but it was far from being tacky or cheap. I liked it so well, I ended up reading all seven books in the series in three weeks!! They are quick reads and not deep, but extremely entertaining! I highly recommend them all!!! This book is funny - laugh out loud funny - I love her attitude about just continuing with her life and not let a thing like being dead stop her from having a good time and spending time with her not dead friends and family.

This is like reading a romantic comedy only the heroine is a vampire. She wakes up in the mortuary and doesn't even realize she is now a vampire though and it's hilarious watching her figure it all out. You'll like her and will laugh your way through her escapades. I have read the entire series now and I intend on reading it again one of these days. I read it for the humor more than anything else. If you liked the Southern Vampire Mystery series by Charlaine Harris, then you will like this too. This vampire is more worried about her stepmother stealing her large shoe collection than about being dead! The only thing that I didn't like was the foul language from Betsy. The author has her cussing every other word in some scenes. It is really distasteful and the story doesn't need it to be funny.

"Undead and Unwed" was recommended to me after I was coming off the Twilight Series by Stephanie Meyer. I was looking forward to another series to start and this seemed light and fun.
I picked up the audio book at the library and as far as chic lit goes, the story was just "ok". I could get past the bad puns, and slowly warmed to the main character, Betsy Taylor. I even really liked her best friend Jessica (who was, by the way, my favorite character). My biggest problem with the audio book was the "voice" that the narrator gave to Sinclair. I absolutely hated the accent she put on for him and it made me really dislike the character. Far from sounding like the sexy dangerous love interest, he sounded more like a snooty butler type. I got no sexy vibe for him and therefore couldn't get into the whole love interest plot line. It really turned me off from wanting to read any other books in the series. Overall the story was light and shallow but not so much in a bad way. It was not even in the same ball park as the Twilight Series, but if you're up for "chick lit meets vampire" (think Shopaholic Series), my only advice would be to skip the audio version. Another series I do recommend (and way better than this one) is the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris. The main characters and general storyline are somewhat similar but the narrator on the audio is SO much better! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-12-07 02:16:06 EST)

A good friend recommended this book to me or I confess I would have never ordered it on my own. The cover alone was a turn off for me. But don't let it fool you! Betsy is one of the best female vamp characters to come along. She's sexy, brilliantly funny, and her wit is as sharp as a knife! The book reads very fast, and has just enough steamy romance to wet your appitite for the next in the series.

Poor Betsy! First she is attacked in an alley by some nasty people (if you could call them that) that aren't that familiar with soap and water. Then she gets hit by a truck, thrown into a tree and dies. Then she wakes up only to realize that her horrible stepmother stole all her designer shoes, and oh yeah - she's now the undead.
This is a laugh out loud start to a series that I'm anxious to continue reading. It's like really good chick lit mixed with vampires! A fun read. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-22 03:03:39 EST)

I decided to try this book one day when reading through some reviews of it online one day. I figured it might be good for a few chuckles, but I wasn't expecting it to be high on my list of favorites. Surprisingly, I was blown away by this book! The book opens with the death of the heroine, Elizabeth "Betsy" Taylor, unambitious executive secretary and designer shoe queen. Rather than let death stop her, she "rises again" to reclaim her shoe collection from her tacky and cruel step-mother. But Betsy soon discovers she is not like other vampires; she is able to go into religious buildings, she is not bothered by crosses, and she is unaffected by holy water. These abnormal characteristics point to a vampire prophecy of which Betsy may be the fulfillment, simultaneously placing her in danger from those who do not wish the prophecy to come true.
This is a novel in which the heroine is moderately intelligent at best, grating at worst, and simultaneously endearing always. If you love chick-lit style paranormal novels doused in humor, sarcasm, and a tough-as-nails leading lady who refuses to back down from anyone - including the man she is attracted to - this is the book for you! This book is a mix of paranormal and chick lit, so if you don't like either genre you need to avoid it like a vampire avoids garlic. Oops, sorry about the slip into lame similes. I thought this was pretty good. It was cute, almost precious at points, but I liked Betsy's no-nonsense reaction to waking up and discovering that she's now undead. My one complaint is that I found the language to be rather crude at at times. I'm no prude, but the sudden switch to almost vulgarity during the sex/feeding scenes was rather jarring. But it was a fun diversion and the reader of the audiobook was a perfect fit, so I'll definitely be listening to more in the series.

Just the right amount of funny, sexy, and wit! I found this book in the most random of ways.
The main character is a hoot, as are all of her friends and surrounding characters in this book. I was in a book rut... seeming to read everything that sounded the same so this was a nice change. Am glad to have stumbled on this series. I will definitely have to read up on the continuation of it... This book made me laugh, got me all hot and bothered, and again, laugh, laugh, laugh. You'll love it. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-05 01:16:24 EST)

This book was recommended by a friend so although I rarely read fiction, I thought it might be a nice change.
Didn't like it. It's basically a romance novel with some quirky characters and a different type of story line. The main character gets fired, gets killed and turns into a vampire... one who can walk around in daylight. I did not like the main character as although I'm all for shopping and shoes, she got on my nerves. Maybe it's my age (over 50) But I know people who rave about the entire series. The day Betsy Taylor died started out bad (waking up late, sitting in gum) and got worse (getting fired from her job and then dying from a car wreck). Or maybe waking up in the morgue in a cheap pink suit and her step monster's tacky knock off shoes was it... Either way, she's not dead. As a matter of fact she's having trouble staying dead. She jumped off the roof of the morgue, stabbed herself with a butcher knife, drank a bottle of bleach, electrocuted herself, tried to drown herself and tried to get herself murdered by a group of would be rapists.
The only thing all of that resulted in was a hole in her shirt, a case of dry mouth, some bad hair and some dead rapists. Oh and the six year old who's mother she saved, telling her she was a vampire. Yeah, told by a six year old what she now is. Taking this information, Betsy goes back to her life and tries to get back to normal. It's not exactly normal, when a pair of vampires she meets insists that she is the foretold vampire queen, and that she is the one that will overthrow the current ruler. Maybe she was better off dead... I love this series and author, I highly recommend her if you're looking for a funny and chick lit look on vampires. I decided to try this book because I was looking for something to tide me over while waiting for the Sookie Stackhouse book. I had a little bit of trouble with the first couple chapters. I thought, I'm not going to enjoy this at all. Boy! Am I ever glad I stuck it out. Once i got into it, I laughed and laughed. What an enjoyable read. I can't wait to read the rest of them.
