The Wisdom of Menopause: Creating Physical and Emotional Health and Healing During the Change

Through her bestselling books, groundbreaking PBS specials, and up-to-the-minute clinical knowledge, Dr. Christiane Northrup has earned a place as one of America’s most trusted medical advisors.

In The Wisdom of Menopause, she once again challenges convention with this inspiring look at one of the most commonly misunderstood female health issues. The “change” is not simply a collection of physical symptoms to be “fixed,” Dr. Northrup claims, but a mind/body revolution that brings the greatest opportunity for growth since adolescence. The choices a woman makes now–from the quality of her relationships to the quality of her diet–have the power to secure her health and well-being for the rest of her life. Through her personal story and many fascinating case histories, Dr. Northrup shows:

• How menopause jump-starts changes in the brain, issuing a dramatic wake-up call to body, mind, and emotions
• How to ensure the long-term health of breasts, bones, and heart
• How the body adjusts naturally to changing hormones
• Why bestselling drugs like Premarin may not be the best choice
• How to deal with metabolism shifts, weight gain, sexual problems, and appearance issues
• How to negotiate the challenges of “the empty nest” and midlife marriage

And much more.

In a book destined to be a classic, Dr. Northrup shows women how they can make menopause a time of personal empowerment and positive energy–emerging wiser, healthier, and stronger in both mind and body than ever before.
Menopause doesn't have to be a dreaded curse of aging during which we can look forward only to hot flashes and whacked-out hormonal mood swings. According to Christiane Northrup, M.D. (Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom), menopause often marks the beginning of a woman's most sexually passionate, creatively inspired, and professionally productive phase of life.

While this may sound like wishful thinking, Northrup backs up her good news with solid medical expertise. As an obstetrician and gynecologist, Northrup has specialized in using a mind-body approach to women's health for decades, which means she doesn't just write about hormones, but also examines how a woman's lifestyle, emotions, and beliefs are affected by menopause. With the right diet, attitude, and perhaps some supplements along the way, women can actually look forward to a resurgence of energy and a revolutionary opportunity for personal growth--one that rivals the hormonally driven period of adolescence in its scope and urgency, she claims. And yes, at just under 500 pages, The Wisdom of Menopause does explain how to have a positive and healthy menopause in concise detail. Northrup has indeed "written the book" on menopause.

It helps that Northrup has been through menopause herself (she vowed she wouldn't write a book on it until she was on the other side). Readers have the sense that they are gleaning advice from a knowledgeable holistic doctor as well as a sage aunt whose life was radically altered by the "change of life" (Northrup divorced at the onset of menopause). After she shares her personal story of "the change," Northrup delves into a significant discussion on how self-sacrifice catches up with women in midlife. Suddenly, hormones are directing women out of the caregiver role and into an inwardly focused assessment of life and its meaning, she explains. Resentments (not hormones) are what spur the notorious surges of anger, as women reexamine the agreements surrounding their relationships with colleagues, friends, and family members.

From here, Northrup guides readers into a thorough section on menopausal hormone changes--a discussion that is scientifically informative, yet entirely accessible. While acknowledging the need for hormone-replacement therapy and the tremendous relief it can provide (helping to alleviate insomnia, hot flashes, and depression), Northrup encourages women to avoid synthetic hormones and instead consider "bioidentical" hormones (such as estradiol, estrone, and estriol). She also devotes an entire chapter to foods and supplements that support hormonal balance. By the way, she says to skip the wild Mexican yam creams: "they certainly don't provide the documented benefits of progesterone." Be warned: some readers may find the advice in Wisdom of Menopause too alternative for their liking. For example, in her discussion on insomnia, one of Northrup's recommendations is to cover the mirror at night, following the ancient Asian design principles of feng shui. (Skeptics will find Northrup's medical assertions carefully cited and footnoted in the rear of her book.)

Northrup gives a solid and practical diet plan that supports hormonal balance while countering the weight gain that so frequently plagues menopausal women ("focus on portion size, not calories," "eat protein at every meal," and cut down on refined and high-carbohydrate foods). Readers can also expect a thorough mind-body discussion in subsequent chapters that cover breast health, bone loss, and cultivating midlife beauty, along with chapters titled "Sex and Menopause: Myths and Reality" and "Creating Pelvic Health and Power."

She concludes with a list of mail-order and online resources, such as retailers for bioidentical hormones, progesterone cream, Chinese herbs, soy products, weight-loss audiocassettes, lubricants, and Kegel weights. Northrup takes a truly comprehensive approach to all the effective treatments of menopausal symptoms so that women can make their own highly informed and wise choices. --Gail Hudson

This book literally changed my life...the way I think, eat and exercise. It has influenced my priorities, emotions and health and I recommend it not only to all women going through menopause...but to all women PERIOD; young and old. I even encourage all MEN to read this to better understand the women in their life and what they go through. It was an easy, fast read and I keep it handy to refer to it often as a resource. I so related to her perspective - Can't wait to read her other books!

Brillian book, most essential for all women to read in their years leading up to the menopause. It addresses all aspects of symptons all women will experience at some point in their life, gives you remedies for a natural approach to handle it or what you should ask your doctor should you need more help. It also gives you scenarios from real people she has treated, which I am sure some women can relate to. Most of all it gives you some reasoning and direction for what is happening in your body and why it happens. It is a bible for all women.

For years I've seen Dr. Northrup pop up on PBS and Oprah and for some reason I just never could "get into her" when I saw her on TV. This is the first of her books that I've read and all I can say is wow! Packed with medical health information, quality holistic health info, tons of personality, and yes -- a lot of wisdom -- this is the perfect menopause guide to read for women who want to embrace this time of their lives spiritually, mentally, and physically. I know others have pointed out that the "new aginess" of the book was a turn-off. I actually liked it. Look, you can find dry medical advice about menopause just about anywhere. I really appreciate this creative dimension to the book and felt it added to its cover-to-cover readability. Also, now that I've become a Northrup devotee, I've done some poking around the web for more resources like this one. For anyone won over by Wisdom of Menopause, I recommend checking out womentowomen.com. It is part of the clinic cofounded by Northrup way back when in Maine and has lots of great articles that follow Dr. Northrup's way of thinking.

Lots of sound medical advice and explanations but this book would have been more readable (and much shorter) if she had left out some of the personal and New Age info. Other books I've read on the subject have pretty much the same information on perimenopause so I didn't find much new. Got it from the library or else I probably would be returning it to get my money back.

I have gained so much information about menopause from this book. Christiane is wonderful at telling it like it is and I am so grateful for that. We can do so much to take charge of our own lives and this book gives all the angles, from homeopathy to medicine/drugs and learning to trust our instincts. Women need to begin by taking real care of themselves and everything else falls into place. If you have questions about menopause READ THIS BOOK! And live it's message.

I thank God for this book. I have been reading books for 10 years trying to find the answers to what is happening to me. This book is for women who not only want to know but want to know how to respond and help get through it with sanity intact. This is THE best resource. Men just don't get it. I'm sorry, but no male doctor book has the depth and understanding this female doctor has. It is worth so much more than the price....it's priceless.

I was very disappointed with this book. I was looking for a book that discussed the body changes with menopause. Instead I got a book that was very pro divorce. It was interspearsed everywhere throughout the book. Very sad that alot of people might read this book because the author is well known and they will be encouraged to drop everything and think only of themselves at the expense of their families, especially their children. I ended up throwing the book in the garbage can.

This book isn't what I was expected. I expected to learn more about the stages before menopause, and I did, but I didn't expect to read something that, in some ways, was depressing. The author explains her life and how menopause affected her when she didn't realize it, causing her marriage to fail. But with me, this is the happiest time of my life with a new marriage. It's hard to read the depressing divorce stories while my marriage is happy and a new beginning on life.

I can't imagine a more comprehensive resource for women seeking information about going through this important transitional phase of life.

I love the fact that Christiane Northrup is not only a medical doctor, but a spiritual person with a total-person approach to health and a metaphysical outlook. She brings a balanced, holistic approach to women's health, with the reassuring guidance of one who has not only helped many others, but who has experienced the complexities of mid-life for herself.

Each chapter addresses a different aspect of women's health and well-being at menopause: things such as brain health and memory, sexual myths and reality, pelvic exercises, food supplements, life fulfillment issues, mood swings, aging gracefully, skin care, diet for a changing metabolism, exercise, sexual organ health, hormone replacement therapy, osteoporosis, breast health and heart disease. All these subjects are covered in great, almost tedious detail.

Some chapters provided life-changing insight. I devoured her clear descriptions of how a woman's diet should be modified at mid-life, as well as her ideas about the best ways to exercise. The author clearly knows her material, and has helped countless patients with a staggering variety of women's health issues.

Although some parts of the book did not interest me, for example hormone replacement therapy options, I was impressed with the thoroughness and degree of experience and expertise the author brought to each subject addressed.

This book is a must-have resource for any woman over 45 as a way to prepare for and experience the menopausal years with knowledge and insight.

The nice fact about this book is that it provides updated information on both the current medical advice on the topic of menopause AND the alternative herbal/nutritional approach, all supported by relevant current studies and literature (the writer is a physician), so that the reader can make an informed decision on what route to follow. This is, according to me, what any physician should do. In addition, I find the positive outlook to this time of change to be emotionally encouraging (even if somewhat forced), as the end of reproductive years is usually lived as a stress, both physically and psychologically. The cited sources indicate how to deepen some points of interest. Since the topic is continuously evolving, it is advisable to follow also some newsletter on it

This is a must-read for women in their 40s and 50s. I am right on the cusp of menopause & my physician recommended this book to me. The central theme of the book - that the years surrounding menopause are a time for women to claim themselves emotionally and physically - speaks powerfully to me and more than once has brought me to tears. The medical information and recommendations (diet, herbs, HRT, exercise, etc.) for dealing with hot flashes, vaginal health, osteoporosis, etc. is easy to understand and complete. My one hesitation about giving the book 5 stars is that sometimes she veers off into the land of New Age pep talks, which I could do without.

This book does have some information that is useful, but it is overshadowed by the author's questionable (and sometimes insulting) emotional analysis of possible causes of menopausal symptoms. Her "spiritual" evaluations seem to reflect her own emotional difficulties rather than provide any useful information for other women.

Minus the drivel, this book might have some value. But the other content leaves me to question whether I would want to put my trust in any of her advice. I don't need to be analyzed. I need clear and relevant information. I will be looking elsewhere.

OK, i love to read about health and hormones. I have them all. This is generally a good book if you have access to good medical care and to alternative solutions (a doctor who will work with bioidentical hormones for example). Thankfully I do and I do use natural progesterone cream. The confusing things: she touts soy quite a bit. However, you can find that soy is not "all that" and the studies she quotes seem to be all done by the soy industry. Search on soy and you will see what I mean. Also, if you are estrogen heavy, I have read to avoid soy as it mimics estrogen. Those with certain breast cancers are told to stay away from soy for that reason. She doesn't seem to explain that clearly or perhaps I just have it all wrong. The other sticky point is she says not to starve yourself yet she recommends Reliv and Usana products. Both are MLM which means expensive and not USP quality tested like other great brands. The USANA website says that the RESET program she recommends if very low calorie which means starvation. This backfires eventually. I also found some stuff about USANA that their supplements are not as complete as the label says. So, I question her judgement there. I also wonder if one gets so thin when nature wants to hold on to some fat as the norm, if she osteoporosis is the next step as that can happen when you get too thin and don't build bone. I think for diet I prefer Schwarzbein (although this gal isn't too far off....she leaves alot of it up to you). And high fiber (but low processed food, ditch the "whole grain bread" in lieu of natural carbos like greens and sweet potatoes) is a better choice. But, if you are in menopause and not sure what to do or where to start, this is a good general book. It is helpful that she is a GYN and she has been through menopause so she gets kudos for that! There is my two cents worth.

I purchased two copies of this book for my daughters for a stocking stuffer. Once I started looking it over, I was even more impressed with Dr. Northrup! I have seen her on PBS specials and have one of her health tapes, as everything she writes is just excellent.

I wish this book had been available when I was in my forties; I know my daughters will thoroughly enjoy reading and learning from the information Dr. Northrup provides.

A person I would love to meet one day. We all could learn alot from Ms, Northrup. A definite book for knowledge.

Succinct, to the point, direct, holds no punches. It's a touchy subject and the book handles a delicate subject matter in a very professional way. While it's a delicate topic it's also important that the material not be misunderstood and this book walks that tightrope better than most. I felt I was 50% better able to deal with this after reading the book, and that's pretty significant.

I've been on sort of an anti aging kick lately, and wholeheartedly agree with an earlier post that Northrup's is the best book on the subject and that Martha Bolton's "Race You To The Fountain of Youth" is the FUNNIEST book on aging ever written. Race You to the Fountain of Youth: I'm Not Dead Yet (But parts of me are going fast)

I was hooked on this book in the first 33 pages. It was ah-ha moment after ah-ha moment for me. This author has a way of explaining medical changes in an informative and entertaining way while at the same time tying these changes to your emotional and spiritual being. Highly recommended +++
