The Time Traveler's Wife (Harvest Book)

A dazzling novel in the most untraditional fashion, this is the remarkable story of Henry DeTamble, a dashing, adventuresome librarian who travels involuntarily through time, and Clare Abshire, an artist whose life takes a natural sequential course. Henry and Clare's passionate love affair endures across a sea of time and captures the two lovers in an impossibly romantic trap, and it is Audrey Niffenegger's cinematic storytelling that makes the novel's unconventional chronology so vibrantly triumphant.

An enchanting debut and a spellbinding tale of fate and belief in the bonds of love, The Time Traveler's Wife is destined to captivate readers for years to come.

I always begin reading books with a sense of adventure. It wasn't long before I felt completely lost in a story so banal and so trite that I wondered at my own intelligence since so many people have lauded it. What have I missed? Maybe it's the genre, not my favorite at the best of times. I simply didn't care about Henry and the very precious Clare after a few pages. My willing suspension of disbelief vanished and maybe has shown up in a different time zone. I just hope it comes back!

Henry DeTamble is a time traveler. He can't control when he does it or what year he'll land in, but it happens. He suffers from a "Chrono Displacement" disorder which causes the travel, leaving him naked and often disoriented somewhere in time. Though it is an incredible burden, it is also these episodes of time travel that define his relationship with Clare Abshire in this one of a kind love story.

This book contains an incredibly unique and complicated story, but it is told in a way that is fairly simple to comprehend (unless you start questioning all the complexities of time travel--that tends to give me a headache!). There is a lot of explanation of how Henry's time travel works, or at least what he knows of it, including things like changing the future, preventing things from happening, etc., which I appreciated. Of course, there are always more questions, but some answers are better than none.

The relationships in this book--particularly Clare and Henry's--are incredibly well-crafted. One thing that makes it so special is the way Clare and Henry meet and get to know each other. When Clare is six, she meets Henry for the first time; he is 36 and has already known her for years in the future. Many years later, Henry meets Clare for the first time, when he is 28 and she is 20; Clare explains to Henry that she's known him almost all her life. These details and encounters are so unique and intriguing. Even though Henry jumps around in time and Clare remains stationary, they both get a sense of their futures and pasts already being intertwined when they first meet. Often one of them has memories of moments that the other hasn't experienced yet. Their relationship is extraordinary--truly one of a kind.

One of my other favorite things about the book is the narration. Since it alternates between Clare and Henry (who may be time traveling), the same moment can be told from one, two, or three different points of view, which are often dispersed throughout the entire book. This sometimes provides questions that will be answered later, or just a point of view from someone who has different knowledge of the situation. It was definitely interesting--you never knew which moment was about to be revisited and told from a new voice.

I don't have too much criticism for this book. The only thing I'd say is keep in mind that this is not a YA book (I venture out of that genre from time to time) and I would not recommend this for younger teens due to language/sexual content. However, it is definitely a book that more mature readers (around high school age and up) can appreciate and enjoy!

I also think it's safe to say this is one of my favorite books of all time--five stars!

This was a book club selection and for the most part has been a pleasurable read. Excellent character development and writing style are essential to a successful read. The author did well given the format of the book. The characters make you laugh. They make you cry, eliciting an emotional response, which is good.

The negative comes with the editing. There is constant shifting of the narrative, which becomes annoying. I found myself having to look back to see which character was speaking and at what age he/she currently is.

There is a tendency in current media practices to add pizzazz and bling to attract the reader/viewer. More is not better. It becomes distracting, making it easy to put the book down and subsequently forgotten.

This book is probably great for those that like romance novels. My problem is that I thought it was an adventure book based on the time machine movie with Mr. Depp. Unfortunately I couldn't finish the book because it was too slow of a read for me. I should have researched the book category. My bad.

(Hide Review...)  Tragic Love Story
Reviewer Permalink
My real rating for this book is about a 3.3, but the extra star is for the prose the author borrows from other sources which is skillfully woven into the novel.

Henry DeTamble is a reluctant time traveler. He jumps backwards and forward into time at any moment, usually when it's most inconvenient, to relive both happy and tragic moments of his life, as well as to get a glimpse of what has not yet come to pass. His ability to time travel is beyond his control and even though he is able to talk to his loved ones in his past, he is not able to alter the future in any way. The most significant part of his time travel is the opportunity to meet his future wife and enter her life periodically as she is growing up. This novel is all about the love between Henry and Clare, and how Clare must endure the pain of watching her husband disappear in time and wait for the time when he will once again reappear. This is the tone of the novel and though the action plods along at a turtle's pace, the author slowly reveals to us that Henry is, sooner or later, heading for disaster. It is just this desire to find out what happens that keeps me reading, else I would have put it down a long time ago.

My problem with this book is that though the idea of time travel is an interesting topic for a book, not enough is happening to make it as engaging as it could be. It is basically the play by play of a couple's uneventful life with the extraordinary circumstance of time travel thrown in. The mood is a sad one because there is so much foreshadowing of Henry's less than happy future and the unfortunate events of his continuous scrapes that one can't help but read on with dread. I didn't like that feeling. I also lost patience with the extra fillers like an entire scene from It's a Wonderful Life told to me; and all the punk band mumbo jumbo. Enough already!

Ironically one does get to feel for Henry and Clare as you would Romeo and Juliet. You wish they would get their happy ending but you know it won't happen because the author has already hinted that it's a tragic love story, so all you can do is sit back and wait for it all to unravel.

B read.

(Hide Review...)  Unique love story, but takes some focus to really enjoy.
Reviewer Permalink
A beautiful love story that uses science fiction to both complicate and strengthen the bond of Clare and Henry. It does not focus on the details of time travel, but instead uses this to tell a love story that stands the test of time and and the boundaries of age.

Henry has a genetic defect that causes him to time-travel. There is no predictability to where he might go or how long he will be gone. Clare is Henry's future wife, and she has known him her entire life. The book begins when she first meets Henry in 'real' life, but then in a few pages, begins where it should, at the beginning: Clare is a little girl and Henry is man who has time-traveled to her backyard.

Pay close attention to the year and the characters' age at the beginning of each chapter. Although a bit tricky at first, it will greatly help you follow the story line. This was probably the only frustrating part of the book, but it is easily overcome with a little focus. The story isn't the same if you don't spend the time understanding where Henry is in "time" and how that relates to the rest of the characters.

This felt like a good mystery, revealing clues to the couple's path, but not giving away the ending. I enjoyed unraveling the story chapter by chapter, and seeing the evolution in the characters as they aged and gained experience. Both Henry and Clare face unique challenges and their interactions both in the present and with a time traveling Henry are interesting, to say the least.

someone saw me reading this the other day, checked out the back cover and assumed it was some sappy romance novel. true, it is a story of love, but it is also so much more. niffenegger artfully addresses time travel, life and loss, hope and patience, while melding art and literature with the lives of her characters in such a way that i couldn't help but appreciate what she had done. it definitely puts life and love into a new perspective, one that is worth pondering over. the beauty of the story lies in the characters and the truth that we can find in them. unfortunately, as character building stories go, there were some lulls in the storyline. i had a hard time pushing through the first 200 pages, but flew through the next 200. the story itself was an interesting one, about henry detambles involuntary time travel to his own, and his wife clares, past and future. it is a difficult concept to grasp at first and requires a little sorting out of dates and people, but is a beautifully written account of such a complex subject.

i had a time travel dream last night, so i know that there was some level of impact on me. definitely a book i would recommend for you patient readers who love a rewarding experience through words.

Oh my goodness!!! What a great book. I saw the movie on a Monday and loved it, so I got the book on the next Satuday. I was finished with it by Monday afternoon. I just couldn't put this down! Henry is an unwilling time traveller due to a genetic disorder. He has no warning when he will travel or where he will wind up. Clare is an artist from a well to do family. She meets Henry in a meadow near her parents' house when she is 6 years old, Henry is 36. She spends her childhood and adolesensce loving Henry as he pops in and out. However, when she is 20 and he is 28, Henry has no idea who she is when they meet at the library where he works. She is already in love with him, but he has not met her yet. Even more mind bending is the fact that she is in love with a Henry almost a decade older. The Henry she meets is an alcoholic womanizer. So, Clare has to help mold Henry into that man she loves, which wouldn't be possible if he had not come to her meadow all those years ago/years from now. Wow. It sounds confusing, but the author does a brilliant job of keeping it all untangled. I will be thinking of Henry and Clare for a long time. Their story is absolutely beautiful.

It is the worst book that I have ever read. Whole story and characters are very shallow, fake and no consistancy at all. Henry sometimes remembers what he has done during his travel and sometimes clueless, just for the convenience of the author. To my opinion, the author wrote this book just for the sake of writing something. Completely waste time to read it !!! Luckily, I borrowed the book from the library. Otherwise, it wastes my hard-earn money too.

A line in Steel Magnolias has long stuck with me: "I would rather have thirty minutes of wonderful rather than a lifetime of nothing special." Niffengger explores this premise thoughtfully through several relationships in The Time Traveler's Wife. But while the book presents a fascinating idea and explores several themes poignantly, it would have been better suited to a novella rather than a 500+ page book.

For the first quarter of the book, the plot is a compelling force (as is the last quarter, though for quite different reasons), but the middle plodded along so slowly and clumsily that the urgency and flow of the plot is nearly brought to a standstill. Niffenegger does a brilliant job of exploring the depths of the main characters' love for each other and, more surprisingly, the commonplace turmoils of their relationship. However, her writing style lacks any notable character and at times the plot borders on sentimental; but, the strength of the character development and the uniqueness of the premise save the book from being overshadowed by its flaws.

I'm a cryer. I always cry at sappy love stories whether they be books or movies. This can barely be described as a love story and it didn't move me at all. I never really understood why Henry and Claire were in love in the first place. I wasn't convinced that they felt anything deeply for each other besides the sex they had all the time. Even when they were trying to have a baby, I kept thinking "why?". It was all so shallow and unbelievable. I am really disappointed with this one.

Like another reviewer mentioned, I was also disappointed with the lack of character development especially with Claire. She did nothing with her life accept wait for Henry. I mean, did she even finish college? Was she a good mother to Alba? Who knows? The author never goes beneath the surface with any of the relationships in the book, including the main characters.

I would not buy this book again.

(Hide Review...)  more of a lust story than a love story
Reviewer Permalink
While I really liked the whole time-travel, meeting your spouse ahead of time, etc. story line, and the way the author presented it, a major problem for me was that this book came off as more of a lust story instead of a love story. The author's overuse of the f- word was what did this for me. The time traveler and his wife didn't make love, they f-----. Both characters continually referred to it in those terms both after the fact and in asking each other for it. "Why don't you f--- me", "please f---" me", "let's f---", over and over. The overuse of such crude/juvenile terminology for what should have been beautiful moments in this couple's life ruined the relationship of the two and the entire book for me.

(Hide Review...)  Overrated and underwritten and full of plot holes
Reviewer Permalink
After seeing previews for the movie, and hearing positive reveiews from family and friends, I decided to read this book. I was told it was an epic, moving love story. I kept waiting, and waiting for it to happen, but it never did.

By now, everyone must know the plot, however I'll still summarize it. Henry DeTamble is blessed--or cursed--with chrono-displacement disorder. His first time travel experience happens when his mother dies in a car accident when he is five, and it happens continually throughout his life. In one of his experiences, he meets the young Clare, who is already his wife in the present. He transforms her childhood. She transforms his future.

Despite the slightly icky premise, I thought maybe the author could pull it off. However, rather than give me a love story of how Clare and Henry fall in love, Niffennegger continually tells me "Clare and Henry fall in love because it's meant to be." Then, layers on the sex scenes. I would have no problem with the "meant to be" part if Niffennegger has fully explored the conflicts, the exhilarations, and the highs and lows that both Clare and Henry would have realistically experienced since their love is tied to fate, rather then free will. Instead we told the Henry and Clare always find each other perfect. They have the perfect bodies, the perfect sex life, the perfect careers--they are the perfect people for each other. That is the depth of the epic love story.

Then, there is the name-dropping. While it is useful as an indictor of Henry and Clare's interests in art, literature, philosophy and music, we learn nothing insightful about their characters from it. To a certain extent, it also verges on the ridiculous. Henry is always shown as time traveling or being exhausted from time-traveling--so where on earth did he find the time to perfectly fluent in several languages, well-read, a music geek and an all-round hipster. There is also some hyprocrisy in how the interests and name dropping is presented. Henry and Clare are always talking about how awful the "capitalist misogenist corporate operating system" but when Henry and Clare when something involving money occurs in the book, we don't see them following through on their political and hipster beliefs--if anything, they become even more conventionally suburban and boring. Not the daring, radical characters we are so often told that they are.

Then, there are the plot holes. Does Clare ever graduate from college? How did Henry not time travel in his mother's womb? When did Clare get so famous she needed an art dealer? How did Henry graduate from any type of school if he's always time traveling?

Despite not being chronologically told, this book isn't a difficult read. Niffennegger often tells the past/future event in the same chapter. Often times, the plot feels confused--as if Niffennegger couldn't decide which chronology should be given stronger emphasis--Henry's or Clare's--so she takes the middle approach which muddles down the challenge and intrigue of Henry's time travel. Henry talks about being out of time, but you never feel it because everything is arranged in a chronological, non-time suspended order. Another point that makes Henry's time traveling feel unrealistic that he's ALWAYS able to time travel back and reassure Clare EXACTLY when she needs his time travel future self to be there whether it be on issues regarding courtship, getting married, childbirth, etc. (This happens at least 3 times but up to 6 altogether.) This, in a book that constantly trys to tell us just how random, scary, and unpredicable Henry's time travel supposedly is.

Yes, it's a long book but most of it is empty space. Long descriptions involving "and this and this and I did this and that as well." It could have been by reduced by half and nothing important would be missing.

This book could have been something special but instead, because of how it is written, is just another It Book that will be forgotten in a few years.

By the end, I was ready for it to be over. And I hate to say this, being a woman and all, but the writing is unbearably feminine.

Chicago Librarian Henry DeTamble is married to abstract paper artist Claire Abshire. They were married when Henry was thirty and Claire twenty-two, however they first met when Henry was thirty-eight and Claire was six. How can this be? Here's how. Henry suffers from Chrono Displacement Disorder, which means that at any time at all he involuntarily disappears from where he is, leaving behind a heap of shoes and clothes and reappears in his birthday suit in another time and place and that leaves a lot of room for humor in this touching love story.

Ms. Niffenegger has created a wonderful story about a man who craves stability and can't get it. She shows us how he has to survive by hook or crook when he shows up somewhere sans money or clothes. No ID either. And we see Claire waiting and worrying while Henry is away and we worry with her in this superbly written story. Yes, there is a touch of the SciFi here. Yes SciFi fans may be a little put out by the way Ms. Niffenegger deals with time travel, but when you come right down to it, this isn't a SciFi book at all. It's a love story, one you'll never forget. Never.

I'm not sure how I ended up with this book. Well, I mean I checked it out at the library all on my own, but I don't know why. I didn't think I was going to like it at all. At first I got too tied up in all of the dates and times and the whole thought of time travel. I was thinking it would be cheesy like that Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock movie with the mailbox.

In this book the time travel done by Henry is more like a genetic defect. There is no time machine, he can't control it. He doesn't know where he is going or when. To make matters worse, whenever he lands, he is completely nude and without any of the possessions he had in his current timeline.

Henry first meets Clare when she is 6 years old. In his own timeline he and Clare are already married and he is only 8 years older then her. But in this first meeting he shows up as his 36 year-old self. I thought the emotions of both Henry and Clare were brilliantly portrayed as well as the way they grow and change.

Clare is desperately in love with Henry, from the time when she is able to feel the emotion. Henry in his own timeline however, has no idea about Clare until she finds him in his when he is 28.

Once I stoppped worrying about the timeline and what was happening when and how, I actually started enjoying the book. As the story unfolds, so does the romance and the plots of the story. I actually enjoyed this WAY more than I thought I would.

One of my biggest problems with the book was the excessive use of the f-word. I'm not a prude, but sometimes it's so unneccessary that it almost makes me blush. I am fine with the use of language when it gives something to a character or plot. (Example, Hannah Moskowitz's Break, the main character is a teenage boy. His use of language gives his character credibility as a teenager.) Certain words uttered by a character, might let you know more about him...give you depth and understanding. When it is used in the narrative, it just seems unneccessary.

Without spoiling too much of the plot, we get a few other `naughty' words, but the one that caught me off-guard was the use of the four letter c-word to describe a certain part of the female anatomy and how much it hurt after childbirth.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and look forward to seeing the movie rendition of it. Although it's been out for a while, I still haven't seen it!

First off, from the reviews of this book, I was quite excited from the get go. While I don't think that contributed largely to my 3/5 score, I do believe it played some role. To note, I come from mainly the Sci-Fi/Fantasy Genre (Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Twilight, Warcraft),

The text of the book itself is enjoyable, and you will feel some connection with the characters, but it wasn't so enticing, that I was dying to turn the next page or caring very much what happened to them. The Time travelling concept was great, but I believed it could have been played out better. It was partially confusing at first, but you'll catch on very quickly.

What upsets me is how the ending plays out, I won't ruin it for you, but it really killed the overall goal of the book for me.

The book is good, it's not flimsy paper and is solid. For 10 bucks this will give you a give experience, though not life changing as some others have argued.

I can not see how they made a movie out of this book. I should have read more reviews. Claire and Henry completely lost me on Henry's travels. The worst part was when there were two Henrys and two of his daughter. Also I had a hard time understanding why he had to leave his clothes every time. I was never sure when he died. Early in the book or when?

This was such an interesting story and I loved the way the author told it. It drew me in from the very beginning and never lost my interest. The entire time I was reading it though, all I could think was how great it would be in audio format, hearing the characters tell their own story - I had very definite ideas as to how they would sound too. :o)

I loved it and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for an interesting, fresh story to read.

A copy of this book has been kicking around my house for a while. The plot concept is a good one, and the characters are generally likeable; even the constant switching back and forth in time is a delight. I just found the book less-than-satisfying overall; aside from the token rom-com, tear-jerker of an ending, the characters were not well developed (documented, but not developed) and everything felt very trite.

If you have made it this far past all the hype without reading "The Time Traveller's Wife," don't bother. I finished the book easily, but with so many great books out there, there is probably a better use of your time. I certainly didn't see writing skills that warranted a $2 million advance for her most recent book.

I love Rachel McAdams. And, I'm not gonna lie, the guy that plays Henry is pretty gorgeous. Knowing I wanted to see the movie but also having a rule that says if I know there's a book before watching the movie, I must read the book first. So I did.

This story is unlike anything I've ever read, or even contemplated as a story. It's written in a journal-like format, going back and forth between Clare and Henry. I dislike journal formatting but I completely changed my mind reading this book. It was just SO amazing and I read it in two sittings.

But I must be fair and warned you; I cried. A lot. Hysterically. Several times. I read the last
pages through tears and it was so touching.

I cannot recommend this book enough. It's tied for my favorite with Pride and Prejudice and surpasses every Jodi Picoult book I've read.

Wow what a wonderful and beautiful book, I absolutely loved it and I didn't want it to end. I do have to say it took me a little bit to get used to the changing of times and characters. I fell in love with the characters and felt everything they felt. This is definitely a book I will read again. I am looking forward to seeing the movie and I am hoping they haven't changed it too much. The book was perfect. I can't recommend this book more.

I went to see the movie before I read the book. I was able to get through half the book until I just didn't care anymore. I love to read, but this was too bogged down with description. I thought it was me, but after loaning out the book to someone else that loves to read I realized that it wasn't just me. She couldn't get through the book either!! So, I can only give this two stars because the book just dragged on and on.

The ideas behind the book, and the way that the reader is propelled into events that seem to be both happening in sequence and totally disjoint, is ingenious. At first, I was wondering where the whole story was heading, but, by about three-quarters of the way through the book, it is fairly obvious how it will end. However, that didn't make me want to stop reading. Quite the contrary: I couldn't stop!

Initially, all the time jumps are a bit confusing, but the start of every chapter is labelled with the date and the ages of the main characters: Clare and Henry. Sometimes, Henry has two ages, as he meets himself coming back; or forward. Don't worry though, you soon get used to the structure, and it flows incredibly well.

Although the book is entitled The Time Traveler's Wife, it was much more about Henry, the time traveller, than about his wife, Clare, whose character was much less developed. One other aspect of the book, which sometimes irritated me was that it was often too high-brow. Perhaps it is me who is too low-brow! And my final little gripe is that there were too many lists. These can be skipped: once you get used to them, you can see them coming.

The enduring thought that I was left with was, "If I could travel in time, where and when would I go?" How would you answer that one?

(Hide Review...)  Liked the book, despite the pretentious writing style
Reviewer Permalink
The book is fresh, unusual. All the good things about this book have been already said not once and are all true. I really liked the book, although this is not one of the books I would read again.
But... I hated the pretentious writing style: endless naming of probably famous people, whose names doesn't ring a bell on any level for me. The author made a serious research, searching for "big" names and tried to insert few names on each page: she could have saved a forest! I think, she managed to name almost all musical bands that existed in the last century, while it didn't add any additional meaning to the book. It only made me skip pages, as well as endless naming of streets and restaurants did. The characters seem too old and serious when they are actually in their twenties: I caught myself several times rechecking in what time the scene is taking place.

(Hide Review...)  Excellent Book, Slightly Disappointing Ending
Reviewer Permalink
I loved the vast majority of this book. Original, well written, and laced with surprises (both good and bad--just like real life), it captivates you and makes you care about this couple and their unusual relationship. Reading it was a pleasure and I highly recommend it (along with everyone else!).

Two things disappointed me, however. First, I think the author must have a frustrated sex life, based on the sexual relationship of her two protagonists. It's not graphic or extreme, but it reads like a sighing fantasy. But that's minor. The second thing is the last--I don't know--sixth of the book. It gets pretty dark, which is a bit out of character with what has preceded it. And there's an episode with a character named Gomez that I found very distasteful and not in line with the personality of one of the main characters (can't say more than that without giving some of the plot away). I wish the publisher had accidentally let those two pages slip to the floor.

These two things added a little bit of tarnish to an otherwise thoroughly enjoyable book.

I heard so many good things about this book from different people and even when I checked it out at the library the librarian said it was one of her all-time favorite books. I had a hard time getting into the book. The characters were flat and the book was not very exciting in my opinion; it was too random. I just kept waiting for something to happen to justify all the praise it received. It ended kind of sweet but it was also very sad. I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought it was not a great read.

I just finished the audio version of this book which I borrowed from the library (author/publisher: if you are listening, why isn't it available for Kindle? I'd have paid for it then!). It was a wonderful read - interesting plot, wonderfully drawn characters. None of the characters are perfect, but they are likeable despite their flaws just as my real human friends. While time travel books are not new, this one is presented in a very unique way. I ended the book wishing it could have gone on longer.... just as the characters in the book were wishing for the same.

This book was recommended by my book club. Overall, it was not the worse book that I've read, but also not the greatest that some make it out to be. I agree with the previous reviews that this book was way too long. Alot of the art stuff could have been cut out and more character developement inregards to Gomez and Sherice. To those thinking of reading this book, it is very slow and confusing in the beginning. However, it gets better as it goes on. I also disgree with the comments about the ending. For me it was the best part of the book. If you really read the book, you will see that they do get their "happy ever after".

I really enjoyed this book. When I wasn't reading it I was thinking about it. I was quit confused the first half of the book, my mind just would not wrap around the whole time traveling thing. But after I got half way through the book it started to kick in and I enjoyed the book even more. I still enjoyed the book at the beginning, I loved how it went back and fourth between Clare and Henry, and it went from different time periods. It kept you guessing and kept you wanting to read to see what was going to happen next.
I was sad at the end. I was hoping that it would be different than what it was. But not all endings are happy endings, or what you want them to be. :)

(Hide Review...)  This book made me angry
Reviewer Permalink
The positive: The story is amazing, the time travel is handled well, it's romantic.

The negative:
In the last chapter, huge, HUGE betrayal. To the point I almost stopped reading right before the end. I hated it. Now I feel like I've wasted my time. Also, does this author have a clue about romance? Sex is not romance. Her descriptions of sex are not romantic. They actually detract from all the romance. The lurid descriptions throughout the book just cheapen it. It would have been better to hint and leave it up to the imagination.

I am actually angry this author did this story. I wish someone else had done it and treated it with more of the respect it deserved.
