The Story of the Malakand Field Force: An Episode of Frontier War was an 1898 book written by Winston Churchill; it was his first published work of non-fiction. It details an 1897 military campaign on the Northwest Frontier (an area now part of Pakistan). Churchill participated in the campaign as a second lieutenant in the cavalry; he volunteered for the posting, having become bored of playing polo in India.

The episode with which this chapter is concerned is one that has often occurred on the out-post line of civilisation, and which is peculiarly frequent in the history of a people whose widespread Empire is fringed with savage tribes. A small band of soldiers or settlers, armed with the resources of science, and strengthened by the cohesion of mutual trust, are assailed in some isolated post, by thousands of warlike and merciless enemies. Usually the courage and equipment of the garrison enable them to hold out until a relieving force arrives, as at Rorke's Drift, Fort Chitral, Chakdara or Gulistan. But sometimes the defenders are overwhelmed, and, as at Saraghari or Khartoum, none are left to tell the tale.

Warning!! The Edition of this book published by Alan Rodgers Books/Aegyptian Press has NO MAPS!!! I strongly recommend that you do not buy that edition. I am sure sorry I did. I wish I could recommend an edition that I know does have maps, but from the information available on their web pages I can't tell if they do or not. I just went and took a look on the web and the original edition had 6 maps. Churchill obviously assumed in the text that maps were going to be available to refer to. It is VERY DIFFICULT to figure out what was going on during the campaign without them.
