The South Beach Heart Health Revolution: Cardiac Prevention That Can Reverse Heart Disease and Stop Heart Attacks and Strokes

'Another masterpiece! The author of The South Beach Diet has taken a sharpshooter's aim at heart disease, the Normandy Beach for half of all Americans.'-Mehmet Oz, M.D., co-author of You: An Owner's Manual and You: On a DietHeart disease is the number one killer of men and women in this country. This year alone, 865,000 people will have a new or recurrent heart attack, and another 700,000 will have a stroke. Don't become a statistic-heart attacks and strokes can be prevented! In The South Beach Heart Health Revolution, Dr. Arthur Agatston's innovative approach to heart disease prevention will show you how to protect your heart and live a longer, healthier life. He has authored groundbreaking studies and is frequently quoted in the media as a diet and cardiac health expert. Previously published as The South Beach Heart Program
Book Description
A pioneering cardiologist and the author of the international bestseller The South Beach Diet presents the truth about cardiac care in this country and offers his proven program for preventing heart attacks and strokes.

This year alone more than 1 million men and women in this country will suffer a heart attack or stroke. The shocking fact is that the majority of heart attacks and strokes can be prevented with the medical knowledge we already possess. Yet this isn?t happening. Why? Because doctors and hospitals are paid more to treat disease with invasive techniques like angioplasty and bypass surgery than to prevent it. In his most personal and passionate work yet, Dr. Arthur Agatston champions a revolution in heart disease prevention that will enable people to stay out of the hospital and off the operating table.

In Part 1 of this compelling book, he tells you why seemingly healthy people can suddenly have a heart attack and why people with great cholesterol numbers can be walking time bombs. He explains why belly fat can be an early warning sign of future heart disease and why a noninvasive heart scan can help predict your risk of heart attack. In Part 2, he presents the South Beach Heart Program, his 4-step plan for detecting, preventing, and even reversing heart disease: The 4 steps include: Heart-healthy eating, regular aerobic and core-strengthening exercise, state-of-the art diagnostic testing, and the latest heart-protective medications, as necessary. Thanks to his aggressive prevention approach, Dr. Agatston rarely sees a heart attack or stroke in his practice. Now you can benefit from the prevention strategy he uses to help his patients every day.

Dr. Agatston's explanation of the heart and heart disease is written in layman's terms so everyone will have an easy time to understand the "ins" and "outs" of heart disease. After reading this book, you will want to change your life style and ask your doctor for these life saving tests. I would highly recommend this book especially if you have a family history of heart disease and stroke.

Okay, but not, imho, as accurate nor as engaging as other books. Try Ultrametabolism instead.

Positives: delicious, nutritious food. Never felt hungry through a year of using the recipes and menus. That was five years ago and 50 pounds ago. The 50 have stayed off because I/we still eat the same way, and always will. Negatives: preparation of many recipes takes a LOT of time and access to a few ingredients that are hard to find in a small town grocery store. This would be a TERRIFIC diet if only one had someone to prepare all this food for you. Still the best diet out there; it works and it changes the way you will eat and think about food for the rest of your life.

I purchased this book for a friend who had bypass surgery. I had previously read South Beach Diet and tried it out. I thought it was extremely informative and sensible. It definitely improved my weight and my overall health. I hope this book will help my friend make some needed changes in his diet and life style.

I HAVE NOT READ THROUGH THE ENTIRE BOOK YET, BUT HAVE MOST, IF NOT ALL, DR. AGASTON'S BOOKS ON SOUTH BEACH DIET & HAVE STUDIED NUTRITION OVER THE YEARS (ALOT) IT'S GREAT INFORMATION & IT SEEMS THE ONLY WAY TO DIET IS THROUGH NORMAL EATING WITH GOOD CARBS & LOW GI FOODS ADDING LOW FAT DAIRY (OR NONFAT) PLUS FRUITS, VEGGIES & WHOLE GRAINS PLUS SMALL AMOUNTS OF NUTS, SEEDS & LEGUMES. SO I AGREE WITH IT - NOW IF I COULD ONLY STICK TO IT FULL-TIME! I THINK IT'S ON TARGET INFORMATION & WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. THANKS - STILL TRYING TO 'REVERSE'.

A very good book, almost excellent. It's nearly comprehensive and a great introduction for the middle-aged man to understand the cumulative negative implications of declining fitness and increasing inactivity. It's shortfalls are the limited examples of day-to-day sample menu's and the advantages of non-processed foods. Additionally, the chapter on exercising is a bit lame in this day of mens health, and widely distributed fitness, etc. Finally chapter summaries would help. Otherwise, well worth the investment and the read. For me, this book has been a great help for me to understand how to make an important mid-life change in direction to improve not only the quality of my life but also my longevity.

From the author/cardiologist of the popular "South Beach Diet" comes "The South Beach Heart Program" -a book designed to get and keep your heart in shape via a 4 step plan.

Step one is getting on a good diet. It should come to no surprise that the diet plan recommended is the heart healthy South Beach Diet. Step two is the exercise portion and the book recommend walking and strengthening exercises, particularly your core. The rationale here is that you can't keep your heart strong and exercise if your other muscles are weak. Step three is about getting the right tests. In other words, the earlier you get the tests, the better your chances are of preventing a heart attack or stroke. And finally, step four is getting the right medications one might need.

Good for anyone concerned about being heart healthy, I recommend this book for due to its comprehensive discussion of its subject in plain language. Also recommend "The Sixty-Second Motivator" for readers needing help making healthy lifestyle changes. Good luck!

Dr. Agatston book is a great story about the limitations of the current medical system, with emphasis on how heart disease is treated in the USA, and how we, collectively, could do a better job by improving the early diagnosis of heart disease. It encourages people to develop simple habits and follow treatment options that reduce the number of surgical interventions, as well as the number of cardiac events and deaths. It gives its readers the knowledge and tools to get going with these solutions. The typical doctor is not well prepared to diagnose heart disease early enough. Patients are well rewarded when they are proactive in prevention methods. Hospitals and many cardiologists often intervene to save patients when their lives are already compromised, but have no financial incentive to truly emphasize early prevention for the rest. Dr. Agatston found one: Educate the public by selling books. Given that heart disease is the number one killer, this one is worth it.

The author has things just right. Preventing heart attacks is the key to treating them. The strongest part of this book is his recommendation on Statins to control cholesterol levels. I have personal and remarkable results from following his recommendations. Even at 80 years of age by following the authors four step plan I have increased my heart pumping capacity by 50% over a 12 months period. I was not a big fan of his first book - South Beach Diet but his heart program is a life saver

I am a Registered Nurse and believe that this book WILL save lives if people will use his program. I brought my total cholesterol down 80 points in just 3 months-in my case, using old-fashioned oatmeal and 2 tbsp. milled flaxseed EVERY morning for breakfast and THEN following the South Beach Diet for the rest of the day. (I cannot go almost completely without carbs, it doesn't work for me.)My HDLs (good) are OVER 85 and my LDLs (bad) are less than 120. Triglycerides were great, at less than 100.My doctor was so shocked, he searched my records to make sure he had not prescribed a statin medication! I hope this is not too technical and helps you.

I thought it fell short in providing "do's and dont's" for the diet. It was a wealth of information on the diagnosis and treatment of heart desease. I was looking for step by step instructions on how to follow the diet, I did not get much information at all on the subject.

This is an excellent book and should be required reading for all adults and probably on an exit exam for high school students. I have bought five copies of the book and given four away to friends and family. I will probably buy a few more. This book tells the reader how to analyze the problem, measure it and deal with it.
