The South Beach Diet Supercharged: Faster Weight Loss and Better Health for Life

Five years ago, with the publication of The South Beach Diet, renowned Miami cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatston set out to change the way America eats. Now he has an even more ambitious goal: to change the way America lives by helping Americans become fitter as well as thinner and healthier...for life.

In the all-new The South Beach Diet Supercharged, Dr. Agatston shows you how to rev up your metabolism and lose weight faster while following the proven healthy eating principles of the original diet: choose good carbs, good fats, lean protein, and low-fat dairy.

Collaborating with Dr. Joseph Signorile, a professor of exercise physiology at the University of Miami, Dr. Agatston presents a cutting-edge, three-phase workout that perfectly complements the three phases of the diet itself. Based on the latest exercise science, this ease-into-it fitness program combines low- and high-intensity interval exercise (with a focus on walking) and functional core body-toning exercises. The result: you'll look fitter and you'll burn more fat and calories all day--even at rest.

Also included is the latest nutritional research on how specific foods high in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and a host of phytonutrients help keep you healthy; new and expanded lists of Foods to Enjoy; taste-tempting Meal Plans for phases 1 and 2; and dozens of easy-to-prepare new recipes, including Eggs Frijoles, Chock-Full-of-Veggies Chili, Roasted Tomato Soup, Homestyle Turkey Meatloaf, and South Beach Diet Tiramisu. In every chapter you'll find inspiring success stories from real-life South Beach dieters and plenty of effective weight loss tips. And as an added bonus, Dr. Agatston answers the questions you've most often asked him about the diet since the original book was published.

Updated info on the South Beach Diet. Easier to follow than ever. One caution, however. If you have a bad back, be very careful in doing some of the Pilates exercises. Go slowly and modify if necessary. Otherwise, excellent.

(Hide Review...)  A Comprehensive Plan for Diet, Exercise, and Healthful Living

Instead of repeating other reviewers, let's focus mostly on seldom-discussed details of this book.

The South Beach diet centers on natural foods. Agatson contends that portion size usually takes care of itself when natural foods are eaten. He opposes the taking of supplements with the exception of fish oils (p. 314), because he doesn't believe that supplements can adequately replace the nutritive content of natural foods. Fish oil is effective at reducing the inflammatory response that is part of the metabolic syndrome. (p. 81)

Agatson traces the obesity epidemic in the western world. He points to the overconsumption of refined carbohydrates and other foods with a high glycemic impact, and the increase in sedentary living. In fact, he shows that NEAT (nonexercise activity thermogenesis) has declined not only since the Industrial Revolution, but even at much more recent times, owing to such inventions as the e-mail. (p. 57) Even subtle declines in everyday activity levels add up, over time, to increased fat accumulation.

He points to the irony of the fact that American children are overfed but undernourished. This causes a host of problems beyond the most obvious ones. For example, the attention span of children in schools has declined in recent years. (p. 87) As an experienced educator, I fully agree.

Belly fat is the most dangerous, as it contributes to the inflammatory process that leads to cardiovascular disease, strokes, etc. Agatson shows how crude weight measurements and the BMI have been superseded by measurements of the waist-to-hip ratio. It should not exceed 0.8 in women and 0.95 in men. (p. 64)

Agatson prescribes many different kinds of exercise. He also stresses interval training, pointing out the fact that this facilitates fat-burning. Also, more intense exercise gives a longer afterburn, which is the time that fat burning is still occurring at above-resting rates after the exercise session has been finished.

There are numerous menu ideas presented in this book. There is also a helpful table of food substitutions (p. 242) for use in the Phase 1 of the South Beach diet. For instance, mashed potatoes can be replaced by mashed cauliflower or pureed navy beans, and potato chips can be replaced by baked zucchini chips.

This book concludes with a list of references, to articles in medical journals, which the research-oriented reader can use for further study.

This book is less about diet than about exercise. The premise is that you should exercise which is hardly a revelation to anyone. The original book had everything you need for the diet except that the new book will produce additional profits for the author. Go check out the old book in the library for free.

Reinforces what was written in the first book, with some additional interesting information. The list of foods to enjoy got bigger, which is better to choose a wider variety of acceptable foods. And of course, the supercharged part of it, exercising, makes it a must-have book for an all around excellent diet and lifestyle change. Would also recommend The South Beach Diet Quick and Easy Cookbook, which has many more delicious recipes.

I was aware of South Beach Diet throughout all these years but I never made an effort to read any of the books by Dr. Agatston as I thought that there was too much hype about them and I considered this whole `South Beach movement' as a passing fad, especially after reading somewhere that South Beach Diet is nothing more than repackaged Atkin's Diet. But the main reason that I actually avoid diet books is the fact that I do not believe in diets. What I believe in is healthy lifestyle and I have already purchased my Perfect Healthy Lifestyle Book a few years ago. For all that reasons I was surprised (actually `unpleasantly surprised' to tell the truth) when I recently got The South Beach Diet Supercharged as a birthday gift. Just to prove myself that I was right about my opinion about this book I took it for my bed reading the next evening. And that is when I was proven wrong. It turned out that this isn't actually a diet book per se. Like the other book this one is actually also a book about healthy lifestyle. Since the book is addressed to people having some problems with controlling their weight, a big part of it is devoted to nutrition. However the main focus here is on proper nutrition rather then just losing weight at any rate. The part on exercising gave me some good ideas for making a better use of my daily walks and weekends' hikes. A number of recipes for easy meals, healthy salad dressings, etc. should satisfy most demanding `Health Freaks' like myself... Although The South Beach Diet Supercharged does not beat the content of my most favorable Body Maintenance Handbook, it is definitely a good addition to it.

I started the SBD in September 2007. I've lost 55 lbs and kept it off. I pre ordered this book and couldn't wait to read it. Phase 1 is so much easier than Phase 1 in the original book. The new recipes are fabulous. I also started the 3 phase exercise program contained in this book about 3 weeks ago. Phase 1 of the exercise plan is pretty boring if you already work out. So far I am being challenged by Phase 2 and appreciate the shorter work outs! I swear by the SBD and have been lucky to have a husband that didn't need to lose weight but wanted our family to eat healthier. I was a sugar and bad carb addict but also liked to enjoy a glass or two of wine and didn't want to give the wine up. This is the perfect lifestyle to adopt and this book makes it so easy if you are willing to take the time to plan your meals ahead of time. As one last comment - on phase 1 of the diet I did not cheat AT ALL and did not weigh myself until the 2 weeks were over. I had lost 13.2 lbs and completely lost my sugar and bad carb cravings. Anyone that I know that has success with this diet truly READ the book and didn't cheat AT ALL in phase 1.

I have been following a south beach regimen on and off for 4 years. Dr. Agaston's newest book was helpful in that it was comprehensive, yet easy to read. It honed in on many of my concerns from belly fat to revving up my metabolism... The discussions on how and why interval training works has motivated me to shake up my exercise routine.
The recipes that I tried so far, were easy and tasted good!

It has helped me get back on track towards the lifestyle change I want to keep me healthy.

This one's a keeper!

I went on the South Beach Diet in November 2005. In one year I went from weighing 280 lbs to weighing 215! My cholesterol went from 221 to 141,and my blood pressure went from 150/100 to 117/77 (with NO drugs). Also I lost 6 inches around my waist. It went from 42 inches to 36.As of May 2008, I currently weigh 212 (at 5' 11') and am trying to work my way to 195 now. I think that this book will probably help me do that.I own all of the books and am one of the biggest advocates of the diet. I would recommend this book to anyone!

Back in 2003, when the SBD first came out, I was a freshman in college and terrified of the "freshman 15". My mom bought me the first [book: The South Beach Diet] and my freshman 15 was a negative 15. Through out college, I remember thinking that I was overweight, but looking back at those pictures, I truly miss how skinny I was! Through different doctors and vitamins and pills and such I got to a point where I gained a rapid and unexplainable amount of about 50 lbs and haven't been able to lose it. I have no desire to exercise, and whenever I do, I just feel worse and more hopeless. I kinda gave up on the SBD way of life, because it wasn't working, and with now feeding the husband, my methods were hopeless.

Well, now [author: Arthur Atgatson] has updated and more than republished his old SBD book, this one is completely an upgrade. [book: The South Beach Diet Supercharged] does have all of the old advice, but so much more, and more in depth, that makes more sense. Plus there is more scientific data to back it up, and more success stories to brag about with the lifestyle. The supercharged part of the diet now is the emphasis on exercise. Not to say that he had not mentioned it back in 2003, he had, but not in the depth and detail with the experts backing his work as it is in this book.

It's taken me about three weeks to read the book, and I've been on the diet for about two and some weeks, and have so far lost 'eh about 10 lbs. It's not fabulous, but it is more than I've been able to do in the last year. So, even though, on day two of the diet, the hubby stocked the fridge with Dr. Pepper and Ginger Ale (my favorites). I haven't had a one, and I'm doing fairly well. I read the exercise portions today, and they appear simple, and appear to be something I am capable of... Just saying, I despise exercise, and the activities are put into a format of ONLY 20 MINUTES a day, and no more. So, I might be able to fit that in between a book or two.

I read most of this book in the first 2 nights! It is not just a rehash of the first book, but it offers new and improved food lists, new menus, new tips for food replacement and best of all--a new exercise program. There are greta stories of people who have lived this lifestyle for over 5 years--which really validates the plan. If you are new to the SBD-this book is a must. If you have the old book--this one is still a good buy!!

All my life I had zero interest in any diet. I guess I was lucky. I've always been slim although not skinny and fine with it. But nothing last forever. Last winter I gained 5 lb and they stubbornly stayed with me. I still had no interest in diets that I heard about and just hoped that somehow my extra pounds vanish. They didn't and then I discovered South Beach Diet Supercharged book. I love it.
I love the diet because it's more like sensible eating guide rather than constant depravation. I love all the little things that I learned about my eating habits. I thought they were great and in general they are but it was good to find out why starting your day with just fruit maybe not the best way to do it. And last but not least I really like the exercise component. It's easy, it's doable and it fantastically supports the eating well effort. What I like the best about this book is that the whole program is so sustainable. It's for life. Thank you Dr. Agatston

If you have never read The South Beach Diet, buy this book instead: It's much more helpful due to the exercise section and latest research on healthy eating and physical activity. If you already have a copy of The South Beach Diet, you need to buy this one as well so you can do the exercises.

I'm a big fan of The South Beach Diet. It helped me lose a lot of weight when nothing else worked. I felt comfortable losing the weight and looked great when I was done, rather than like a survivor of starvation. Whenever I gained a bit of weight since then, returning to Phase 1 quickly took it off.

But there was a problem: I clearly wasn't exercising enough. In the past, I've done a lot of walking and weight lifting . . . but I didn't get much benefit in terms of medical measures like reduced triglycerides. In fact, eating oatmeal and taking omega-3 supplements does more for my cholesterol level than exercise. I know that I need something different.

My eyes opened wide when I got to the section of this book that talked about how moderate amounts of walking (20 minutes every other day) with short intervals of fast movement spaced between moderate walking would do me more good for burning fat than doing all that walking that I used to do at one speed. Now, that sounded great!

Between walking days, you do some moderate body toning. Here is where I had some concerns about the book: The photographs show a lot of stress being put on the back. That's not a good idea for me: I have back problems. I'm not quite sure what to do, but I've ordered the DVD to see how these exercises are to be done and hope there will be detailed instructions there for people with bad backs.

In this book, Dr. Agatston does a good job of describing the various physical ills in joints and feet that baby boomers develop from the wrong kinds of activity and exercise. He even helped me understand how I create vast shoulder pain when I shovel snow the wrong way . . . and now I know what not to do.

If you are under 30, you can probably use this book just as is. If you are older, be careful with the body toning!

The remainder of the book is the same wonderful material on eating good carbs and good fats while avoiding bad carbs and bad fats . . . plus the latest validations of scientific research supporting the assumptions underlying the diet. There are lots of phase 1 and phase 2 recipes, and you can buy separate cookbooks if you want more.

But the best part of the book comes in reading the personal testimonies. They make the book come alive.

Great work!

(Hide Review...)  Good, but fails to acknowledge basic human habits and preferences
Reviewer Permalink
Although I like much of what is suggested by Dr. A in his diet (I actualy tried his diet for a while) and now newly added exercise plan, my main complaint with his and most other diet and fitness programs is that they fail to take into account basic human habits and preferences. A simple and admittedly rather silly example comes to mind when I read things like eating a baked potato with butter is actually a better alternative to eating the potato plain. The justification being that the carbs from the buttered potato are absorbed more slowly due to the addition of the fat. Again, I chose this rather silly example simply as an illustration of the basic lack of understanding of human habits. Of course faced with the prospect of eating a plain baked potato, most people would eat only a small portion, if any of it (25 - 100 calories) whereas, if you throw on the butter, many would eat the whole thing (500 - 700 calories) if not a second helping of the same. The same type of logic can be applied to the consumption of salads or raw vegetables. Who eats salads without pouring on the dressing? Sorry, it's just not what people do. The same goes for snacking on raw vegetables. Sorry, it doesn't work; most people just won't stick to it. In our book Dump Your Trainer we provide a diet and fitness plan which acknowledges basic human habits and we work around them. For example, instead of emphasizing salads we much prefer steamed vegetables which most people enjoy without high calorie additives. In addition, our program is designed to be integrated into a person's existing schedule, not modify the schedule to meet the diet; something which most people have no alternative to. For example: Instead of snacking on unappealing raw vegetables as a late afternoon snack to hold you over `til dinner, how about a tasty protein shake with some Inulin fiber mixed in. Not only will it really satisfy your hunger, it will give you enough energy to prepare you for a healthy walk or trip to the gym (not keep you impatiently anticipating dinner).

As for the new exercise program that Dr. A offers, I really like the fact that he has incorporated core strengthening. Unfortunately though, I feel that some of his interval exercises are overly traumatic for people who most likely are overweight and de-conditioned. The most important thing you need to focus on when starting a new exercise program is avoiding injury, but some of the exercises (side-to-side jumping, etc.) suggested by Dr. A risk injury to the knees, hips and spine. I am also not a big advocate of interval training for people just starting out on an exercise plan. Again, it fails to take into account basic human nature. The fact is: most newbie's who accelerate their workout to a high intensity and then relax the pace will be much more inclined to discontinue the routine versus reaccelerating. From my personal experience (having lost almost 60 pounds and keeping it off for over nine years), I recommend a "step it up/step it down" exercise routine which acknowledges basic human habits while still providing a solid low intensity (fat burning) component as well as a good cardio-intensive segment which almost anyone can follow.

In summary, although I feel that much of Dr. A's program has merit the fundamental problems are similar to those found in most of the existing diet and fitness programs: A fundamental failure to accept and address basic habits which so frequently lead to failure.

In our book we stress that the most important thing you need to focus on when starting a new exercise program is avoiding injury, but some of the exercises (side-to-side jumping, etc.) suggested by Dr.

The original South Beach Diet book changed the way I think about my food selections and I am ten pounds lighter-- years later. This new book has even more information about nutrition in foods and hugely expanded food lists. I started on the interval training program and I have lost those "last couple of pounds" I wanted to just by adding the program! I feel fabulous!

If you were ever looking for "the answer" to your weight and health issues, the South Beach Diet Supercharged is it. I was lucky enough to receive an advance look at the latest update to the South Beach program and have been "living the lifestyle" since October. What a difference it has made not only in my life, but in the lives of my entire family.

For the first time in my life I actually enjoy exercising. The interval walking program has taught me ways to be physically fit without having to devote major amounts of time to it. I am able to get a good work out in as little as 30 minutes. I also have the ability to change up the intervals by using the "interval time technique" on cardio machines such as ellipticals and treadmills this always keeps my workout new and fresh.

My favorite part of the exercise is the palates program. In the beginning I questioned my body's abilities. I now can't wait to see each day how much farther I can push myself. My favorite exercise is the Roll Down which is found in Phase 1. The fist time I tried it I said "You have got to be kidding"! Now, I can achieve success without any problem (Hint: roll up a towel between your legs and squeeze it as you are rolling up. In no time at all you will be able to remove the towel!)

Of course, the best part of the book is the new food choices and recipes. I am a HUGE foodie. I love cookbooks, TV food shows, magazines, anything related to food. This program allows me to continue loving food in a very healthy way. The family friendly recipes in the book will please even the pickiest of pallets! My husband and children are now huge lovers of foods like barley, quinoa and kale. The book also contains easy to use charts that offer you great South Beach friendly substitutes to many everyday cooking ingredients.

This program has changed my life. Not only have I lost weight (36 pounds to date), for the first time in years, I feel healthy!

I have been a fan of the South Beach diet ever since the first book came out five years ago and have lost 40 pounds and kept it off (I do have a ways to go). Needless to say, I have been anxiously waiting for Dr. Agatston to update his original book and I love this new version. I am so glad to have the expanded lists of Foods to Enjoy for Phases 1 and 2 and all the suggestions for easy one-dish meals as well as the great ideas for soups, rolls and wraps, new desserts, and healthy salad dressings. These new features alone are worth the price of the book! Oh, and another good thing. I've never worked out before because I really don't have an hour to spend, but I am looking forward trying Dr. Agatston's new 20-minute a day exercise program (I do have 20 minutes!) Thanks Dr. Agatston for truly supercharging your great diet.

The South Beach Diet Supercharged reinforces the South Beach way of eating involving good carbs, good fats, lean protein, and low-fat dairy. This new book includes a three-phase workout to go along with the three-phase diet plan. The diet phases are:
Phase 1: Eat lean protein, high-fiber legumes, low-fat dairy, good fats (including some nuts), and plenty of vegetables. There are no highly processed refined carbs allowed. This phase is supposed to jump-start weight loss, control blood sugar swings, and eliminate cravings for sugar and refined starches. Phase 1 usually continues for 2 weeks.
Phase 2: Introduce whole fruits and high-fiber whole grains to your diet while continuing with adequate protein such as fish, shellfish, chicken, turkey, lean beef or pork, or soy protein.
Phase 3: Eating is not regulated and the book allows an occasional sugary food or bagel, though does not recommend going back to your old habits.

The exercise program combines both high intensity and low intensity interval exercise focusing on a 10 week walking program, as well as a shaping and toning exercise program of 27 exercises with photos.

Also included are new meal plans for Phase 1 and Phase 2, expanded lists of foods to eat and foods to avoid for Phase 1 and Phase 2, latest nutrition research, testimonials, weight loss tips, Q & A based on reader questions, and many excellent recipes (Turkey Meatloaf, Veggie Chili, etc.).

The basic diet advice of low sugar while emphasizing high-fiber, nutrient-rich carbohydrates, healthy fats, lean protein, and low-fat dairy is sound. This updated version of the South Beach diet is a good book for learning about healthy eating, and it includes a moderate and beneficial exercise program. It is a reasonable and well-documented approach to a healthy lifestyle. I also recommend THE 3:00 PM SECRET: Live Slim and Strong, Live Your Dreams

Dr. Arthur Agatston really changed the way America eats when he published The South Beach Diet in 2003. As a direct result, we now have a broader choice of whole grain breads, pasta etc. and people know the difference between good fats and bad fats. We understand that "calories in-calories out" is a simplistic old fashioned phrased and that the quality of the calories is significantly more important. Dr. Agatston's nutrient rich, fiber dense approach to dieting is what has made The South Beach Diet an international bestseller. His NEW book, The South Beach Diet Supercharged introduces a three-phased interval training program to go along with the diet. It promises to rev up your metabolism, get you off plateaus faster, and keep your body melting fat, even at rest. The new meal plans, expanded foods to enjoy/food to avoid lists, and the inspirational success stories will have you racing toward your own personal weight loss goal in record time.

The new research just out about metabolic syndrome responding to interval training further backs up Dr. Agatston's new program. This is breakthrough stuff. I highly recommend it.
