The Sorceress (Secrets Imrtl Nicholas Flamel)

The third book in Michael Scott's "Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel" series, The Sorceress, kicks the action up to a whole new level. Adding to the series' menagerie of immortal humans ("humani") and mythological beasts, the book picks up where The Magician left off: the immortal Nicholas Flamel (of The Alchemyst) and the twins, Sophie and Josh, have just arrived at St. Pancras international train station in London. Almost immediately, they're confronted with a demonic bounty hunter that immortal magician John Dee has sent their way. At the same time, Dee's occasional cohort, Niccolo Machiavelli, decides to focus his energy on Perenelle Flamel, the Alchemyst's wife, who has been imprisoned at Alcatraz since the beginning of the series. In this book, Perenelle gets a chance to show off her sorcery and resourcefulness, fighting and forging alliances with ghosts, beasts, and the occasional Elder to try and find a way out of her predicament and back to Flamel. Scott is as playful as ever, introducing new immortals--famous figures from history who (surprise!) are still alive. He also adds to the roster of fantastical beasts, which already includes such intriguing foes as Bastet, the Egyptian cat goddess, and the Morrigan, or Crow Goddess. Raising the stakes with each installment, Scott deftly manages multiple story lines and keeps everything moving pretty quickly, making this third book a real page-turner. More than just another piece in the puzzle of the whole series, The Sorceress is an adventure in its own right, and will certainly leave series fans wanting more. --Heidi Broadhead

Amazon.com Exclusive: An Interview with Author Michael Scott

Q: What was your inspiration for the seriesâ??was it the legend of the Flamels and the Book of Abraham? Did Dee figure in from the start?

Scott: The story really started with Dr. John Dee and, for a long time, he was the hero of the series. I had written about Dee before in my horror novels, Image, (Sphere, UK, 1991), Reflection, (Sphere, UK, 1993) and then The Merchant Prince (Pocket Books, USA, 2000). Dee was a fascinating man, but he was never “right” for the lead character: he was always too dark, too troubled.

I know I started to develop the series on May 18th, 1997, because that is the first time the word “Alchemyst” with the “Y” appears in my notebooks. However, it was really three years later, in late September 2000, when I was in Paris and stumbled across Nicholas Flamel’s house in the Rue de Montmorency that the series really came together. I knew a lot about Flamel and the legendary Book of Abraham and, sitting in Flamel’s home, which is now a wonderful restaurant, I realized that here was the hero for my series.

Nicholas Flamel was one of the most famous alchemists of his day. He was born in 1330 and earned his living as a bookseller (which was the same job I had for many years.) One day he bought a book, the same book mentioned in The Alchemyst: the Book of Abraham. It too, really existed and Nicholas Flamel left us with a very detailed description of the copper-bound book. Although the book itself is lost, the illustrations from the text still exist.

Over the course of his long life, Flamel became extraordinarily wealthy, and used his wealth to found churches, hospitals and schools. Both he and his wife, Perenelle, were very well known in France and across Europe. The streets named after them, the Rue Flamel and the Rue Perenelle, still exist in Paris today.

Q: I was excited to see The Sorceress showing off more of Perenelle. How much does the real Perenelle Flamel influence the character of Perenelle?

Scott: We know little about the historical Perenelle. There are a few solid facts however and I have incorporated them into the story: she was older than Nicholas (there is even the suggestion that she might have been a widow when she married him), and she was also wealthier. It is also abundantly clear that she was the dominant character in the marriage and there is some evidence to suggest that she was an alchemist in her own right.

Q: What's coming up next?

Scott: Coming up next... well, book 4 brings up back to the west coast of America and San Francisco. And then we head south towards LA (but if I tell you any more I’ll reveal a couple of big surprises!) However, I will tell you that I am just back from a weekend in London where I spent most of Saturday wandering around Covent Garden. You’ll find out why in The Necromancer.

Q: The most fun thing about the series, I think, is how you reveal new immortals as you go along (e.g., Machiavelli, Joan of Arc... I won’t spoil your reveals in The Sorceress, but they’re surprising). How do you decide which famous figure from history will be your next immortal?

Scott: Thank you for not revealing some of the surprises!

Once I had plotted the series, I had a rough idea of the type of characters I wanted to include. My settingsâ??the United States, France and Englandâ??suggested certain types of characters. I could not write about Paris, for example, and not include Joan. But there were other charactersâ??Scathach is the perfect exampleâ??who was there right from the very beginning. Again, she was someone I had written about before in my early collections of Irish folklore and knew that I wanted to use again.

Also, because this series is based upon legend, mythology and history, it put in place certain rules: the only “created” characters in the series are the twins, Sophie and Josh. Everyone else existed.

Q: You’ve written for adults and young adultsâ??and this series certainly seems to have crossed over into an adult readership. Is the experience any different when you’re writing for younger readers? Do you find that younger readers have a stronger connection to the work, for example?

Scott: I have always written for both adults and young adults, but you are right, the Flamel series has crossed over in an extraordinary way. Writing for young adults requires a certain precision in language. Adults have a body of shared knowledge and information that young adults do not. I can make allusions and references in my adult writing that young adults might not get. My young adult writing tends to be much more descriptive and I will take the time to describe people, places and situations to allow the younger readers to become fully involved in the world.

Younger readers are certainly attracted to the adventure and are thrilled to realize what when they go online they can find out all sorts of additional information about all the characters. The older readers tend to ask more specific questions about the mythological characters.

Q: How is this series different from other young adult books that you’ve written?

Scott: This is the most intricate and ambitious work I’ve done. The six books will take place in less than a month so everything has to knit and mesh together. The notes for this series are now bigger than the books themselves. I have said before that there is nothing accidental in the books. What might look like an inconsistency, for example, is often a clue to something that will happen later on. Because I’ve plotted the entire series, it gives me huge freedom to plant seeds and clues to later events.

Q: Of all the forms you write inâ??novels, scripts, nonfictionâ??do you have a favorite?

Scott: Novels. It is the only one of the three where you are in complete control. With a script, for example, everyone has a say and what you see on screen only vaguely resembles what you’ve written.

Q: What’s your favorite genre (to write and to read)?

Scott: I love writing fantasyâ??and it’s what I read most. However, my rule is when I’m writing fantasy, I will read anything but fantasy. So I end up reading a lot of crimeâ??I’ve got the new John Connolly on the desk to read nextâ??and I’m a huge John Sandford fan. The research for this series is huge (but it’s the part I really enjoy), so I do find myself reading some terribly odd non-fiction.

Q: Have all six of the books in the series already been written? If so, what are you working on now? Is it strange to revisit each of the books as they come out?

Scott: They have all been plotted, but not written. I’m close to the end of The Necromancer now and little bits of book 5, The Warlock, and even the end of book 6, The Enchantress, have been written.

I am also writing and researching a new series, not linked to the Flamel series, which I’m having a lot of fun with. All I’ll say is that it also has its roots in myth. The oddest part of revisiting the books is when I tour. Usually I am touring and reading from a book I finished many months previously. I have to be careful not to reveal any of the forthcoming surprises when I take questions.

I have been reading this series and I have found that while they are interesting, the first two were not difficult to put down. The Sorceress was actually more of a quick read to me. I wanted to finish it and didn't get bored. I hope the next one continues the trend and gets better still. It is an interesting story and I have been enjoying the series.

I loved this book, very exciting. The Sorceress was better than the first two. I bought the book for my son and started reading it before him. I couldn't put it down and was finished in a few days. My son just read it also and was finished in 2 days. It keeps you guessing what's next. We can't wait for The Necromancer. The Necromancer (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel).

The sorceress is a great addition to The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series. I love how Michael Scott focused on every single individual, there isn't a dull or uninteresting character in this book.

The cant-put-down sequel to the Magician and the Alchemist is about two teenage twins, pulled into the world of magic by a man named Nicholas Flamel, after Dr. John Dee attacks them in a coffee shop, searching for the book of Abraham the Mage. He takes the book, but one of the twins accidentally rips out a page, which just happened to be the most important page in the book. Dr. Dee will not stop until this page is in his hands. This leads the twins, Nicholas Flamel, and some friends and enemies on an intriguing journey.

Personally, I really liked this book. It was completely unique from anything else I have ever read. I think the most interesting part of this book, and the series, is how Scott incorporated the Gods into the story. I like how they make others do the work for them, and then plan to take over the world.

Although something I haven't understood is how it is always expressed over and over how much Nicholas and his wife Perenelle have endured so much throughout their long lives, and how they are legends, and how they've fought the worst monsters. If they've done all this stuff than why are they always about to die in the book? It will say how Nicholas and Perenelle fought the biggest, most dangerous monster, and then a monster will come along that's not even close to the horrifying other monster, and they will be drained of their magic. I really don't get it. If Scott is trying to keep the reader turning the pages (which I am) then you don't have to put in all that stuff about being these amazing invincible people.

I do like how Scott keeps the book as fast paced as possible, there isn't a dull moment in this book. Another thing is, I can usually spot what's going to happen at the end of a book, but this one has kept me guessing.

Read if you're looking for a fast-paced, intriguing adventure.

What a delightful, thrilling and well written series that transcends the "young adult" classification it's been given, and just stand as simply great books. Michael Scott continues his tale of twins Josh and Sophie, the ones destined to save the world, or destroy it. While the twins with the help of Flamel, and The Bard himself, race for Stonehenge, Perenelle continues to look for any way to get off of The Rock, A.K.A. Alcatraz, before Dee, Machiavelli,or someone worse manages to kill her. With pretty much relentless action for nearly five hundred pages, Scott redefines the page turner while leaving the reader wanting more at it's oh too soon conclusion.

This review refers to the audio version. #3 'Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel' YA fantasy series. This book picks up immediately where the second one left off, with Sophie and Josh Newman, fifteen-year-old twins (now known to the 'The Twins of Legend') with the alchemist Nicholas Flamel battling against the forces of evil, which are spearheaded by the noted magician, Dr. John Dee. Presently in London, Dee continues to send various foes against them, most drawn from the pages of history and/or mythology. This book is very fast-paced, hurtling along from one near-disaster to another with little time for piecing together of any puzzles in between. Meanwhile, on Alcatraz Island, Flamel's wife Peronelle, a sorceress of some note, has to deal with various monsters sent by Niccolo Machiavelli, another of the evil crew, who is looking to settle an old debt with her. The book leaves no doubt that there will be more in the series as it seemed like nothing more than an action-packed interlude on the way to a hopefully somewhat meatier conclusion. (I've no idea how many books are planned in this series.) I enjoyed the book, although the reader is not my favorite. We learned a few things along the way, but most of this was action and not much introspection or puzzle-solving and not a lot of character development. My favorite character in this series, Scatatch, an ancient Celtic warrior goddess (who is now a vegetarian vampire!) was very short on exposure in this book--hoping to see more of her again next time.

(Hide Review...)  The Story Continues--But Flaws Appear

If one has read the first two books of this planned hexad, one can already surmise what is in this third book. If one has not read the first two, then he has come to THE SORCERESS prematurely and should go at once to THE ALCHEMYST followed by THE MAGICIAN, only then coming to THE SORCERESS. None is really a complete stand-alone book. Think of each instead as chapters in a single very large story--and one that is not finished even after this third volume. Scott, perhaps inspired by Rowling's Harry Potter books, has announced his intention of writing a total of six books in this "Nicholas Flamel" series, so THE SORCERESS should mark the halfway point in the saga. Thus far, both the second and the third book have built upon the preceding volume, and the reader will enjoy (and understand) each much more clearly if he has read the preceding work, so, by all means, read the books in the intended order!

In this third book, Scott continues with the same story line, with immortal humans, pre-humans (Dark Elders, Archons, Second Generation), and, of course, the hero and heroine, two teen-age "regular" human twins endowed with magical powers, all locked in battle for the future of the earth. Machiavelli and Dr. John Dee continue their nefarious schemes to capture our magical teenagers and continue to be thwarted in their attempts. In fact, the reader begins to wonder just how patient (or how impotent) their Dark Elder masters are to permit these two supposedly powerful but bumbling henchmen to continue their constantly failing efforts to apprehend the teenagers.

Scott does include some really nifty characters in this book. I especially like Aerop-Enap (Old Spider), Gilgamesh and Palamedes. On the other hand, making William Shakespeare an immortal who appears in mechanic's overalls doesn't seem to work very well. And throwing in William Bonney ("Billy the Kid") as another immortal living in San Francisco is really over the top. Heretofore, Scott's characters have all been either from myth and legend or from the mists of little-known history, making them much easier to accept as other-than-normal beings. Shakespeare and Bonney, on the other hand, are well-studied, widely-known historical persons, and resurrecting them as immortals living in modern times puts a real strain on the reader's credulity. Scott would have done better to have continued to seek his characters in ancient legends.

The book also shows some flaws that suggest haste in its writing and a lack of competent proofreading. There are not many of these flaws, but there are certainly more than in the preceding two books. Once (page 332) Dr. John Dee is described as becoming nauseous as he retrieves the sword Excalibur from the noxious sludge into which it had fallen. Now, "nauseous" describes something or someone that is sickening, that is, something that causes nausea in others. It is not synonymous with "nauseated," which is the word called for in this context. It is astounding that any competent author would confuse words with two utterly different meanings such as Scott has done here. But there's more:

Later (page 424), referring to a photograph, Machiavelli says, "It served it's purpose." This sentence is pure nonsense, for it is saying "It served it is purpose." The contraction "it's" is a combination of the pronoun "it" and the verb "is." What Scott should have used, of course, is the possessive pronoun "its" with no apostrophe. The two forms are totally different and have no similarity at all beyond their superficial spellings. This might be passed off as an anomaly except that it recurs on page 443 when Nicholas, reclining in the sun, lets "it's warmth embrace him." Again, the possessive pronoun "its" and the contraction "it is" are in no way synonymous and one cannot be substituted for the other! Has Scott's publisher hired a new (and inferior) proofreader?

One last quibble. At one point, emphasizing his fatigue, Josh is said to have encountered the cat-headed goddess. Perhaps I missed something, but I believe that Bastet never left her car and that only Dr. John Dee had the pleasure of her proximity. I cannot recall that Josh ever encountered her at all. Hasty writing?

The story continues apace. As in the previous books, the action is left incomplete to entice the reader to continue with the next book in the series (when it's published). In this case, we are left with Alcatraz full of monsters, Joan of Arc and Scathach the vegetarian vampire trapped a million years in the past, and Nicholas and Perenelle rapidly aging. Am I going to buy the next volume, which will be entitled THE NECROMANCER, to find out what happens next? You bet I am! However, I sincerely hope that it will not continue this disturbing new trend of grammatical errors and malapropisms, not to mention the fictionalizing of well-known historical figures. It is precisely such blatant errors in the text and the ineffective use of characters such as Shakespeare and Bonney that have earned THE SORCERESS no more than three Amazon stars.

I am a huge fan of this series. I have read the first book about 5 times, I believe? Also, I've read the second book about 3 times. Michael Scott is a very talented writer, and he knows how to keep his readers on the edge of their seats.

The second book was a very good one, and ended in a way that made me want the third book right then and there. However, I had to wait...and once I discovered that the third book was published, I bought it right away!

I got the book, and finished reading it very quickly. I did enjoy this book a lot, and it did have some pretty amazing events that occured. However, there was one problem that I, personally, had with it....

I didnt like how it ended! I'm not sure if anyone would agree with me, but I like a book that ends with suspense. As in, the kind of books that when they end, you have to think,to contemplate, whats going to happen next, and I didn't feel that with The Sorceress as I did with The Magician or The Alchemyst.

Although this book had a kind of...boring, I suppose, ending..I still highly await the fourth book! This series has a very exciting plot that is full of suspense. I cant wait to figure out even more of the challenges that Josh, Sophie, and Nicholas enocounter.

I hope my review helped all of those who are intending to buy this book. :)

This is the third book in "The Secrets of the Achemist" series.

If you read Harry Potter, you've come across Nicholas Flamel's name before. In the first two books, the Twins of Legend are noticed by the Flamels, Sophie is "Awakened" to her magical powers, and the group flees to Paris to have Josh "Awakened," which is done by the Elder Mars.

In this third book, Nicholas and the twins escape to London in an attempt to get Josh aquainted with the first of his Magics.

As in all the books, your knowledge of ancient history and mythology will get a full workout. You'll have already meet the Witch of Endor, seen the ancient tree Yggdrasil, met Scathach the warrior girl (my personal favorite, so far), battle ancient beasts and gargoyles. In this third volume, the usual unsuspected Immortal shows up, battles ensue, Perenelle Flamel battles ancient nightmarish beast on Alcatraz and makes an unsuspected ally, and Gilgamesh the insane king appears, wielding a squeegee. The twins learn frightening things about Nicholas; maybe he's not the good guy, after all?

Continuous action and exercise for the intellect.

I enjoyed the first two books in this series immensely, but I did hope they would improve a bit, or at least change. Each book has the same basic premise. Flamel, the twins, and their followers are running from Dee and his affiliates. During the excruciatingly long chase scene the twins stop to learn magic from some crazy immortals. Perenelle is still trapped on Alcatraz, a plot string which I found boring and drawn out. Flamel is still keeping secrets from the twins, which is irritating. Josh is portrayed as excessively cynical and negative at the beginning of the novel, so negative that I was thinking about not going any further in the book. Also, I do not like the constant stream of historical figures that just happen to be immortal. It seems like little has changed throughout the series. The most interesting parts are still the sections with Dee and the dark elders. Dee seems to be less "bad" than Flamel. They both are responsible for the deaths of millions, they just have differing viewpoints on the use of the Book of Abraham. Flamel wants to use it to restore the world to a paradise, and Dee wants to give it to the dark elders so they can do the same thing. My only hope is that the rest of the books in this series bring us something new, and finally give us a few answers. I fear, however, that the following books will be more running from Dee, a small bit of learning a new magic, and then more running. It has already gotten tiring. Yet, the stories are enjoyable, and I do want to know what happens to everyone. Here is hoping for improvement in the future.

I have just discovered these books and I have to say I am really enjoying them. I checked them out from the library but I would highly recommend buying them.

I have always enjoyed mythology but I am learning about all sorts of stories and creatures that I had never heard of. During my reading I am running to the computer to google these creatures to learn more about them. It is fascinating.

The storyline is face paced and keeps you on the edge of your seat. The author has a talent for answering only part of a question which leaves the reader wanting more. I hope he ties everything up at the end of the series. As you read through the series however you find out a little more information. The author reveals a little about what happened in previous books but it is best to read them in order, I think. He does mention characters that were killed off in the first novel and how their deaths have an impact on the continuing action.

I really like the character of Perenelle. (I'm not quite as sure about Nicholas.) She comes across as a good person who wants to the the right thing. She is smart and strong and is able to gain the respect, if not the love, of many of her enemies.

I have also grown to like both Scatty and Joan of Arc. I am curious if the author will rescue them from the past. I hope so!

My goodness, why are these books considered for kids? Just because there is no sex or graphic gore does not make them childish. Harry Potter, Eon, and this series have been some of my favorite books, and I'm almost 60! My ONLY complaint about this series is that each book ends sort of abruptly. I waited and got the Magician and the Sorceress together, and was much happier with that experience, rather than waiting between each. I thought this was going to be a trilogy, but I was wrong. Now let's see if I can wait for two of them again! Don't let kids have all the fun!! I have listened to all three of these books on audio, and that has been really a fantastic experience. Except the narrator changed in the last book, and pronounced everyone's name differently. Honestly people! that is just SO annoying

Twins Sophie and Josh Newman are on the run. It all began just a few days ago when the brother and sister helped Nick Fleming when his bookshop was attacked and his wife kidnapped. But this was no ordinary attack, and the twins soon learned that Fleming was no ordinary man. He is the immortal Nicholas Flamel, guardian of the Codex, an ancient text whose pages contain spells that can either save or destroy the world. When Josh accidentally ripped out the final two pages from the Codex, he restored Flamel's hope that not all was lost--and doomed himself and his sister to a new life in which alchemy and sorcery are practiced and myths come alive. And that's why the twins have found themselves fleeing across Europe with Nicholas Flamel, searching desperately for allies while their enemies leave a trail of destruction in pursuit of the legendary twins. Whether they want to believe it or not, Sophie and Josh are the powerful twins foretold in the Codex, and if they can master the elemental magics and reach their full potential, they might be able to save not only themselves but humanity from the evil clutches of the Dark Elders.

The Sorceress and indeed the entire The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series may sound incredibly twisted and confusing from that summary. In fact, The Sorceress is virtually impossible to understand without having read its prequels The Alchemyst and The Magician, as each subsequent novel picks up precisely where the previous left off. Even if you have read the prequels, this novel can still be somewhat confusing with the constantly shifting points-of-view, the incredible slow passage of time, the incredible amount of different creatures and characters, as well as the multiple names and titles given to some characters; the various plots and subplots are at times difficult to keep track of. However, I declare this as just a side effect of any good fantasy story; great fantasies are born from imagination, and it takes a very vivid imagination to create an entire new history of the world. The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series is indeed a very good fantasy. I was drawn in from the very beginning with the nearly nonstop plot action and all the magic and creativity put into this story makes it very addicting for me. I'll admit that the characters could be worked on a bit more to be made more believable, but overall, The Sorceress and its prequels are simply fantastic, and I greatly look forward to the next installment in the series, The Necromancer.

I highly recommend starting The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series to any fantasy lover and those who enjoyed The Abhorsen Chronicles by Garth Nix, Foundling by D.M. Cornish, and The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien, although I do warn potential readers: this series is a huge time investment.

Thingy, watusi, hornswoggle...my children learned these words well.

As I read aloud from the third book in Michael Scott's Nicholas Flamel series, certain words had become so common that it was annoying, to read and to hear. My reaction was to replace these common words and phrases with silly substitutes. "Flesh" became "thingy" (courtesy Monty Python). A nod turned into a "watusi." If someone shook his head, he "hornswoggled." And I could have done more, many more. Too many "mutters," "wry smiles" (and if they weren't wry, they were grim)...oh, you'll find your own favorites. For example, I'd like to believe an overzealous editor inserted all those "hads." The mad tense corrector strikes again!

Reading aloud, one has a harder time smoothing over wordiness and overused phraseology. Editors should be attentive to these problems. We'd like to see more effort put into the craftsmanship, as the lack of polish gets in the way of an interesting story. Mr. Scott shouldn't come across as though he's writing this in a rush.

The series is rewarding; no one should try starting with Vol. 3; start from the beginning. It's worth it. Mr. Scott weaves legends and real historical figures into an imaginative new mythos. If you do read it, though, feel free to use my substitutes.

Indeed, too short, I read the whole thing in less than a week. I usually read at night and it was extremely difficult to close the book and go to sleep, this one its more intense than the previous ones (The Alchemist and The Magician)and it just leaves you wanting for more.

The Sorceress is nothing but BRILLIANT, it's raw, darker, and it's action packed from the beginning to the very last page. This series are for both adult and young ones, make no mistakes.

So far, so good....the only sad news......THE NECROMANCER will come out in about a year....can't hardly wait.

Can't go wrong with such extraordinarie series.

Thanks Mr. Scott, bring more.

Sophie and Josh are still on their whirlwind adventure. They've moved from Paris, leaving confusion and disaster in their midst, and are traveling to London. When they arrive in London, they've been noticed and are being tailed.

Dr. Dee is still after the twins. However, the stakes have been raised.

With them both awakened, he doesn't need Nicholas Flamel alive. He also needs to find the twins fast without letting them slip away again or his master will inflict terrible consequences upon him. Meanwhile, his partner in crime, Machiavelli, heads to the island of Alcatraz to finish off the Sorceress. His master's also concerned about the number of failures in regards to capturing the twins and the Flamels.

Time is of the essence to seize both the twins and to open the doors between worlds. Plus, every hour the Flamels grow weaker and older. Can they hold together and combine their strength to fight off the evil beings?

Michael Scott blends mystery, fantasy, and history perfectly together into an adrenaline-filled, action-packed, fast-paced, addicting novel in THE SECRETS OF THE IMMORTAL NICHOLAS FLAMEL series.

Michael Scott is really getting into a groove with this series. I started with the first book as a freebie, and picked up the next two at full price (guess that worked!! :)). I felt the first was too predictable, but each book in the series has gotten progressively better. His style is obvious (Like withholding an immortal's name for 2-3 pages, then hits you with some big name from history), but very enjoyable. I like knowing what I am going to get out of a book. I thought he did an excellent job of making you want more in this book, and I truly wasn't able to predict everything that happened in it, which is a good thing. I think you will find this book and the whole series, a very enjoyable read!

"The two that are one will come either to save or to destroy the world."

Nicholas Flamel believed it. The twins started to believe it. The problem is that now Dr. John Dee and all the rest of the Dark Elders believe it as well, and they will stop at nothing to capture the twins prophesied in the Book of Abraham.

Their plan:

(1) Kill the Alchemyst Nicholas Flamel.
(2) Kill the Sorceress Perenelle Flamel.
(3) Capture the twins of legend.
(4) Retrieve the stolen pages from the Codex.
(5) Summon the Dark Elders from the Shadowrealms
(6) Take over the world.

If only it were that easy. John Dee has spent the last 600+ years trying to catch the Flamels and has failed time after time. Now, his Dark Elder has given him one more chance. Or else! To help him, Dee has hired the powerful immortals Niccolo Machiavelli (famous author and art collector) and Billy the Kid (infamous gunfighter). The two of them have split up across the world to take on the Alchemyst and his wife.

Perenelle Flamel is still trapped on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco, and as if having the deadly magic-sucking Sphinx hunting her down isn't bad enough, Billy the Kid has arrived with reinforcements. However, the bad guys seem to have underestimated the Sorceress. She has had a little time to recharge her powers, and is ready and waiting for whatever he brings her way. Too bad it's the Crow Goddess and the Old Man in the Sea. They could be trouble. Especially if they unleash the bizarre army of monsters locked in the cells of Alcatraz Prison.

Nicholas Flamel has traveled to London with the twins. Both of them have had their powers awakened, and their gold and silver auras are the strongest and purest anyone has ever seen. Sophie has already been trained in both the Magic of the Wind and the Magic of Fire. Josh, however, is still powerless and a bit jealous of his sister. The goal is to have Gilgamesh the King train them in the Magic of Water. The only problem is, the last time Flamel and Gilgamesh talked, the King tried to kill him. All their hope lies in the crazed mind of the oldest being alive. And Machiavelli is hot on their trail. If Gilgamesh can't help them, then they might be stuck without options. The Flamels are aging faster with each day and desperately need to find the Book of Abraham the Mage or they'll die.

So get ready for some entertaining reading. Michael Scott is a master of his genre. This third book of the hexology continues the thrilling romp through history's myths and mysterious faces. (NOTE: If you're like me, you'll even end up Googling a few of these interesting characters.) King Arthur's knights, ley gates, the four swords of power, the enigma of Stonehenge, time travel, Cernunnos the Archon, the Wild Hunt, and even William Shakespeare himself show up in this new installment of the bestselling series. Check out THE ALCHEMYST (book 1). Enjoy THE MAGICIAN (book 2). Then pick up THE SORCERESS (book 3). It would be a tough task to write a book that's better than the first two, but they sure seem more riveting every time.

I have long been a fan of the "Modern-Day Mythology" genre, and having read others in the catagory, I can honestly say that this series takes the cake. The Sorceress adds to the excitement brought to the reader by The Alchemyst and The Magician and leaves the reader anxious for more. While casual readers will devour the excellent story, people with curious minds will be rushing to whatever resources available to find out just who people (or beings) like John Dee, Palamedes, and Scathach (each of whom were both characters in this book and persons of either mythological or historical significance) are. This book is perfect for someone just looking for a good read or a fantasy buff looking for a new series to get into.

The Sorceress, by Michael Scott, starts off right where The Magician left off. If you thought that the first two books in the series were enthralling, then just wait until you read this one. Sophie and Josh Newman, the fabled twins of legend, have now both been Awakened, and now they are searching for the oldest, and most insane, Immortal: Gilgamesh the King. He can teach them the Magic of Water. Of course, reaching him is not as easy as it seems, since they are trapped in London, Dee`s headquarters. Now, must they not only escape the Magician, the twins must also decide whether they can trust Nicholas Flamel. Perenelle Flamel has defeated the Morrigan, but she is still trapped on Alcatraz. The Sphynx is hunting her, ghosts are haunting her, and now she has new terrifying creatures to deal with. Not including the 'split personalities', of course. In this eciting adventure, new characters are added, the old ones change, and the stakes keep rising higher and higher. The Sorceress is beautifully written, the suspense and thrill never stop, and things are revealed that you might never have wanted to ever know. The prophecy continues to haunt and intrigue you, and I can't wait for the fourth book to come out, The Necromancer.

I am a big fan of the Flamel series, having devoured both books one and two. The Sorceress is Scott's best work to date. It is not only incredibly compelling and keeps one on the edge of his seat with suspense, it is also very funny, as clever characters are conjured up to bring mischief into frightening situations. Jumping back and forth between Alcatraz and London is highly entertaining and Scott has proven himself as a leader of the pack in this genre. Can't wait for the next book in the series. I am a huge fan.

(Hide Review...)  Who is Perenelle Flamel?
Reviewer Permalink
This third installment of The Secrets of The Immortal Nicholas Flamel series is far more action packed than the previous two books. Nicholas Flamel and the twins have made it safely to London. The only problem is that this is Dee's town and he has more allies here than any other city on earth. From the moment they step off the train, various creatures of legend pursue Nicholas and the twins. They eventually join up with Palamedes, an immortal Saracen knight and friend of Comte de Saint Germain, and William Shakespeare, Nicholas' former apprentice. Palamedes takes the twins and company to King Gilgamesh so the twins could learn the magic of water, but Dee and his cohorts are never far behind. Meanwhile, Perennelle, Nicholas' wife, is trapped on Alcatraz where Dee imprisoned her. She's managed to free herself and has gathered a few unlikely allies to her defense.

This installment is loaded with action, and more of Nicholas' past is revealed here as Palamedes and Shakespeare come onto the scene. He is most definitely not a clean-cut hero as once thought. His pursuit of the legendary twins of the prophecy has left many casualties in his wake. This latest bit of revelation makes the twins and Nicholas uneasy allies in their pursuit to get the book of Abraham the Mage back from Dee and prevent the dark Elders from entering the world. This installment also asks an important question that, no doubt, will be revealed in later stories: Just who is Perenelle Flamel? And why are the dark Elders afraid of her?

I enjoyed reading this. It was easy to get caught up with the action and the emotional turmoil of the characters.

The roller coaster continues, but this time the dips are punctuated by glimpses of the darker history that predates the current story. A more interesting book than the previous two, smaller, more private battles, both within the characters and between the characters. The first two books were fun, fun, fun to read. This one is also fun, but is more deeply plotted. Dr. Scott had me on the internet a couple of times looking up references to characters.

All in all, the best of the three. The first two were pure action adventure fantasy. This one begins to build a fantasy world that breathes and lives. Great book.

These are fast-paced can't put it down until your finished kind of books, and this edition to the series is no exception. However, I find myself wanting a lot more from them and the world that Scott is creating.

Don't get me wrong, I really do love these books, but I have a lot of general qualms with them. I want more magic, and I want to know how the magic is being created. When we all were transported to Hogwarts, there was an explanation of how the magic worked throughout the world, which had very particular rules about what one can do when and how long it takes to acquire that knowledge.

So, ok, I know that Scott is not trying to recreate the Potter world, but it would be nice to know what rules the magic of this world operates from. The best explanation that we get at any point from either of the twins is, "I don't know, somehow you just know how to do it." I think this is a travesty and is missing out on a crucial element of drawing us into the story. How are they developing these abilities? How do they feel as they're creating the magic?

Every once in a while we get a peek into the whole thing, but it's not nearly often enough. Even the other immortals have cool spells that I'd like to get a little more depth on. Most of the time, they simply say, a shaman taught me this, or I learned this from Circe. You learned what from Circe? Is it a spell that you say? How are you creating the magic?

Anyway, past all that, it's a fun read and, in my opinion, more engaging than the first two. Josh and Sophie have generally become less whiney and are starting to jump into this whole being special and having magical abilities thing. Also, not to spoil it, but there's an interesting plot twist that happens right at the end of the book.
