I'm sure this book will (or has) drawn criticism, but I figure anything that gives us motivation to take the high road for ourselves and those around us, is a good thing. I like the way the book isn't just the author explaining their point of view, but rather a collection of various voices (many famous folks like Churchhill, Lincoln, Einstein, as well as contemporary thinkers) .. This book, if you let it, will give you a lot of things to think about.. and give you hope for better things to come. I didn't know before I bought it that it was an "Oprah Selected" book, as to me, with no ill-will toward Oprah, might cause some to think of the book as the latest "Pop sensation" ... this book in my estimation, goes well beyond that.
Some will dismiss this book as fluff, I say, where's the harm? Why not give it's ideas a try? The DVD, by the way, is also excellent. I give both 5-stars without any hesitation. Don't miss the website, either -[...] - you can watch the entire DVD, or just the trailer, as well as sign up for email "daily thoughts" kinda stuff. Great motivational book, try it before you buy it! I picked this one up at my local library and after giving it a decent effort to use the technique in the book " affirmation " i started to realize that it was working. I checked my local 2 major bookstores and i was beginning to feel like it was greatly overpriced but after checking amazon it was about 70% cheaper. I promise if you buy this book, you will not regret it. It is definately home library material. Its a short book detailed book, Enjoy!

This book literally changed my life. I've always felt that choosing your thoughts was powerful, but now I understand how your thoughts are literally creating your experience. Soon after reading it I realized it was only a basic outline of the law of attraction, a wonderful stepping off point. I learned more in-depth law of attraction concepts through the 11 Forgotten Laws by Bob Proctor and Mary Morrissey. Check it out at [...]. Enjoy all the abundance you deserve!

This book could be somewhat of an inspiration, but most of the concepts within I've already read in the Bible. (Ask, Believe, Receive). It just supplants "God" with the "Universe". The book has nothing groundbreaking in it-it's mostly about positive thinking and manifesting things with thought. I'd simply recommend being more positive and expecting good things in life.

I first saw the movie three or four years ago, right after it was released. I found it to be very powerful. I had read about similar concepts, but never really "got" it like I did with the Secret DVD.
Got the book version expecting that same "magic." It's good, but to me, not as good as the movie. All the same concepts are here, and much of it seems to be a transcript from the movie, but I feel there is something missing. The emotion just doesn't come through like it did in the movie, at least for me. The layout is very nice. This is a book that is very well done. Nice photos to illustrate the content, color pages, and everything you'd expect from a book about abundance. Looks great on the coffee table and makes a great conversation piece. I thought everybody had heard of this book, but I have had a few people wonder "What is the Secret?" when they see it on my coffee table. I loved the content. I felt it was well-explained. Some people have said it is more like "wishing" and lacked anything about action. If you're one of those people, you may want to look at The Rich Switch, which I feel explains this aspect of the Law of Attraction better. It's about ALIGNMENT, not action specifically. Action is part of being in alignment, of course. A good book. 4-stars, because I feel the movie is a better version of it. I have heard there is a "Secret 2" coming out. I hope so!! 'The Secret' has all the basic elements to introduce people to the Law of Attraction. But it lacks a lot of substance and specifics of How To make the Law of Attraction work for you.
It is a great way to introduce someone to the Law and give them an idea of what it is. But the truth of the matter is, the Law of Attraction is ALWAYS working and people need specific instructions on how to make it work for them instead of against them. The most important element to the Law of Attraction is missing from the Secret is the fact that you MUST take inspired action. The thought that simply sitting around and thinking about what you want will bring it to you is putting many at an unfair disadvantage...no matter who you are and how much you practice the Law of Attraction, the fact of the matter is that you MUST take inspired action, and that element is missing from the Secret. As I said, it is a good introduction to the Law of Attraction, but lacks specific instructions on How to Use the Law to attract and act on what you desire. Go Big! I've always sort of known this in a deep inherent way, but after I saw the movie and read this book, my life did a 180 degree turn for the better. Read this book, and apply 100% everything it says and you will definitely see a complete transformation in your life like you never have seen before. Not only has it worked for me but almost all of my friends as well.

Whatever catches my eye I am destined to see? "There are no accidents". Call it The Law of Attraction.
No, I don't think so. We normally recognize such pronouncements as ridiculous -- unless the pronouncement is well packaged, or professionally "branded". In moments of calm reflection we see that we have been propagandized, the buyer remorseful, if not ashamed of h/er gullibility. Thales of Miletus sold it to the Greeks (the Earth floats on water), carnival barkers hawked it in the 19th Century, L. Ron Hubbard offered it in the form of a "Bridge" fifty years ago...and now, yet another repackaging. Nostrums for another, herd-able generation of `pale criminals'. At least in part, I have agreed with James Taylor "the secret of life is enjoying the passage of time". It appears, based on this book, that I have been misguided, that instead the secret of life is equal parts skullduggery, manipulation, and outright fraud--outwitting a malevolent `counter-universe'. Ms. Byrne translates Calvin Coolidge's notion that "the business of America is business" to something like the ruthlessness of one's intention assures the triumph of (one's) ruthless intention. Work and personal responsibility have nothing to do with success. Just be in the right place at the right time (a la M. Gladwell), or, follow Byrne's advice to petition the "universe". Go ahead, the "universe" will reshape disorder and chaos to suit your personal needs. Go ahead! It would seem, on the basis of popularity alone, another generation of greedy degenerates (calling a spade a spade) is being coddled to believe that "greed is good", "you can have it all, "there _is_ a free lunch". How, I wonder, is it possible, under today's economic conditions, to have lost sight of the ramifications of the behaviors Ms. Byrne encourages? Is the "secret" that only those "in the know" -- those who have read and apply her nostrums are, in some mysterious or transcendental way, more advantaged, than people "playing by the rules" and working for what they want? Should we give up entirely on personal responsibility? Can we afford to ignore Shakespeare's wise dictum: "The fault, dear Brutus, lies not in our stars, but in ourselves...." Ms. Byrne would have you believe the obverse, with predictable consequences, as we have recently seen. To believe that the "universe" will deliver on-demand like your cable network is not only simpleminded and foolish, it is delusional. Wait; let me not show my contempt prior to investigation: `Dear Universe: I want another Mercedes, a new house on the Riviera, an endless flow of cash. And, please keep away from me everyone suffering mass hypnosis. Waiting...' The OPEN SECRET is that Americans -- at least those who cannot see into this gimmickry - still don't get it about transcendental swill and snake oil. Is Rhonda Byrne a talented writer? Absolutely not, nor does she pretend to be one. But she is genuinely enthusiastic about the world view that shares with you in this book, giving you an easy to understand introduction and many pointers for further study. I found this book at a difficult time in my life, and it made me hungry for more. Since then I have read extensively, and applied many of the ideas in my everyday life. Have overcome unnecessary phobias without therapy of any kind, stopped complaining or worrying, dared to be optimistic. Is that so wrong?
I guess you really need an open mind to grasp the meaning behind her simplistic writing, but if you can do that you will immediately get a wonderful overview of this New Thought and practice. Then you will be ready to look for more if you're so inclined. I am thankful for this book and for the numerous tangible benefits and inspiration it brought into my life! I love and have read many, many metaphysical books. I get a lift from
them and I even feel a shift in my life after some. "The Secret" by Rhonda Byrne is one of those books. It's easy to read and fun. I found myself laughing out loud and excited to try some of the exercises. They were fun, too. I'm a little bit of a skeptic too, which is probably why I waited until after the hubbub died down a bit, before I read it. I'm so glad that I did. It reminded me of why I know there is something more and that we can have it, everyday. Another book, that has that life-affirming lift built in, is Ariel and Shya Kane's Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: The 3 Simple Ideas That Will Instantaneously Transform Your Life. Additionally, the Kane's book(s)... Yes, there are 3... won't leave you worrying that you did your life wrong before you found and read up. I'm loving life, all of it, happy that everything I did before this brought me to this moment. The one in which I can let you know: You can have it all! Get these books, read them and be supported in having the best possible life. You'll surpass your dreams. How cool is that! (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-07-12 04:09:29 EST)

I am suspicious of any self-help book that has a back jacket photo of an over-made up female. Clearly she doesn't like herself, so what do I have to learn from her?
It gets worse. She gives as examples of those who knew "the secret" Beethoven and Einstein. Everyone knows they were very creative. Fewer know they were miserable people who made those around them miserable, too. We don't get self-help books to be miserable. We get them to be happy. If you want to get this title so you can be more like Beethoven it's because you know nothing about him but, "Duh duh duh DUHHHHHHHH." A previous reviewer noted that by calling it "The Secret," it was made exclusive, scarce, and therefore desirable no matter what the content. Another noted that the author wants you to believe positive thinking works after a while, but negative thinking works immediately. This is a combination of loophole, ("If it doesn't work it's because YOU didn't try hard enough,") and victim-blaming ("YOU attracted that rotten job.") that makes me ill. Women, of course, are made to feel responsible for nurturing just about everything so this fits perfectly for those most vulnerable. Add to that a cutesy, pretty layout and you've got a perfect combo for making a sad woman feel even more responsible for her sadness. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-07-12 04:09:29 EST)

Obviously this book has received huge attention and is helpful to people. Being familiar with positive thinking and the law of attraction, however, I found this book to be more of an outline. It also helps one find other authors that appeal to them for further reading. There are many more detailed books that are more helpful, from book by Wayne Dyer to Deepak Chopra to Abraham-Hicks and Dr. Norman Vincent Peale. In addition to that, true seekers who want to keep themselves ahead of the curve on staying in this law of attraction zone, continued reading is a must. I also recommend reading about people who have mastered this philosophy in their lives. A recent book that's entertaining and helpful in this regard is about an active modern American centenarian. It's called Elsa's Own Blue Zone and there is also a website by that name to learn more about her. She lives this way daily.

Earl Nightingale, arguably the father of the concept of positive thinking, planted the seed for books of this ilk when he averred: "We become what we think about". Although this book contributes to a shift from negative to positive thinking, it's so lite that anyone who is into this topic, or wants to get real information on this topic, will take offense to the many randomly scattered statements that often make you say "duh". They possess the double whammy of not telling you much while lacking support. On the opposite scale, and I do mean opposite scale, there are books like Ordaining Reality which provide enough information as to how thoughts change outcomes to allow you to debate this topic with professional physicists. A newer version makes the case with a less hard science. It's not an easy read or real cheap, but this book clearly piques the interest of any serious reader of this topic.

I ordered a used copy of this book, "The Secret". It is in excellent condition. When I received it, I did not think anyone had read it previously. It is a great book. There are plenty of well-researched, elaborate detractions for this book. I invite you to check those out for more in-depth analysis. I will add a shorter one.
At every turn, this book, DVD, and overall concept are flawed to the point of being dangerous. Few people with any amount of self-awareness would deny that positive thinking is a useful tool for our daily lives. The person with the ability to problem-solve, to seek solutions rather than focusing on what has gone wrong, puts himself at a great advantage in dealing with the inevitable hardships on any level in any life. How quickly this positivity turns to the self-deception of a lunatic. Do not look to this horrid book for anything that will address your personal, spiritual, and emotional needs. For the author, only emotions are useful, and only as a stepping-stone for the clarification of our mighty THOUGHTS. Happiness is the only emotion that exists for this cult (yes, CULT). All other "feelings" are prohibitive and harmful. It is astonishing to encounter an utter ignorance and disregard for the realities of the human existence on such a level as this. WEALTH, POWER, MONEY, CARS, HOUSES, MONEY, LOVE, MONEY, WEALTH, WEALTH, WEALTH. The keen eye will notice a trend here. Items on this list are all the authors of "The Secret" feel are important enough to help you with. The infinite nuances of being a human being in this existence? Eh, you can worry about that when you're vacationing in the Hamptons. In short, this book is disgusting and appalling. It is no Secret how this got published. I have no doubt that the publishers are printing their own money at this point. As with religion, and any other belief system, I feel that each individual should take what they find useful, move on, and try not to bother everyone else with your personal "epiphany." In regards to this book, I can't imagine that any person with a modicum of self-awareness and intelligence (hell, with more than 13 years of life behind them), could fail to see this book for the vicious scam that it truly is. l (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-07-03 09:25:12 EST)

I checked out the 4 cd set from the library last week, just to see what this was all about. I've been listening to them on my morning jog, and as of this morning I am on the 3rd CD, and have been cheesily putting these positive visualizations to work for about 5 days. Several things have happened. Three I won't even mention, because there's too much backstory to make it interesting to a review skimmer, but they were significant and, in one case, just unheard of.
But the one I know people will be interested in is the little money miracle: We're looking to buy our first home, and are coming up short in the downpayment department, right? There's this house in a nicer part of town that really interests us, but it's a bit out of our reach. So last Friday morning, I kept visualizing $100,000 coming into my life, pretty much with each footfall of my jog. About 3 hours later, the husband calls me at work and says, "guess what?" Yep, he had just been idly talking to a relative about our househunting experience, and the (not rich! as far we knew) relative volunteered that he'd be willing to give us $100,000 toward that particular house. I had not even spoken to my husband about these CDs and my morning meditations, and this amount. So, you know. I'm just sayin'. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-07-03 09:25:13 EST)

Perhaps The Secret could be of help to readers that need a shift from negative to positive thinking. However, many of the naive, inane and largerly unsupported statements that are chaotically scattered around in this so called book, are very quick to thwart the trust, interest and patience of a more serious reader...

One of the most stupid books I've ever (almost) read.
There is something you can't deny: good publicity campaign. An empty promise otherwise. Nothing new or secret about the secret. The whole concept is plain common sense, you are indeed responsible for your life and you should be very careful with what you wish or are afraid of because both have a tendency to become part of your reality. But the way this book, with all those false "doctors" and "authorities" (like Joe Vitale) put it is just plain Disneyland: "Think happy thoughts and you will fly". And the focus is extremely materialistic and narcissistic. If you want to read about the same thing in a compassionate, deeper, almost poetic style, I recomend you Creative Mind and Success by Ernest Holmes. This material is as old as the hills, though some of it IS very useful. I would suggest you read 3 Magic Words, (also available on Amazon) written in 1952 by U. S. Aunderson. Many of the passages in this book look suspiciously like exact extracts from his book with a slight rearrangement of the words.
Again, let me stress, positive thinking IS a fine thing but when your health goes south in a serious way, go to a doctor or the only thing you're going to be attracting is an undertaker. I found that out the hard way! I recommend you buy 3 Magic Words instead. As a side bonus, that book gives you the only plausible explanation I've heard of what God may be like or doing with the Universe -- just a theoretical concept not a religion -- but it has the extra bonus of curing you of Christianity (if you need it, which I didn't) as he thoroughly and simply debunks the concepts of heaven and hell and a loving God overseeing a world full of misery and suffering. I suggest reading it when you need it, when you've bottomed out, and are willing to pay attention to his philosophy and trying his interesting 30-day mental diet-- an incredibly simple exercise that turns out to be extremely difficult to do. I can't argue with those who have had their lives transformed, because even the blandest pablum will be transformative for some. All I can do here is plead with those in search of better karma, chi, destiny or what have you to turn to any the great thinkers she misquotes instead of this tripe.
First of all, what bothers me is the vagueness of the assertions such as her claiming that "the greatest teachers who have ever lived have told us that the law of attraction is the most powerful law of the universe." (She also cites numerous world religions--many with conflicting beliefs--in support of this outlandish statement.) The only way one could accept such sweeping generalizations is gross ignorance of the thinkers in question--if this book had even been brought to a publisher in a more literate time period, it would've been laughed out of the room. That is, if Plato, Shakespeare, and the many other luminaries actually said these things, it wasn't in any of the works I read as an English and Philosophy double major. The rest of the book continues in much the same vein: feel-good assertions so nebulous as to defy argument, and positive-thinking principles so simplistic they defy parody. To wit: "If you can think about what you want in your mind, and make that your dominant thought, you will bring it into your life." I'm not saying this is the worst self-help book you could buy--I'm just saying you could do so much better. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-07-03 09:25:13 EST)

When I was first introduced to this concept by a former "good" friend of mine, I was intrigued. But I have discovered that this is a hateful book and philosophy. I am a breast cancer survivor, and have lost friends who believed this book TOTALLY. To think that people believe cancer or any other disease is like a common cold, only transferrable by thought or association, not deed, is deplorable in this day and age. My "once upon a time" friend truly believes that if I even say the word cancer, use my experience to help more recent cancer survivors, visit patients after surgery in the hospital, read up on new treatments and better nutrition and exercise, and share my knowledge and experience with others is detrimental to me and I think of more concern, to her. I believe her premise is that saying the word "cancer" is rather like the old pink elephant example, where just to think it brings it into your life. You know, if you think it, you will get it. "The Secret" recommends that you isolate yourself from illness in others, and let the medical field deal with it. How easy is a life like that, if you isolate yourself from the life trials of others. This book merely gives people who are fearful of dreadful diseases the crutch to blame others and isolate themselves from people going through difficult times in their lives. How can anyone believe this stuff? It is cruel and deplorable. She is not longer my friend because I am the sum of all my life's adventures, not the Typhoid Mary of breast cancer. If the section in the book on dealing with illness is the author's idea of positive thinking, let someone else read it. Then when they get a disease like cancer, AIDS, diabetes or other diseases which invoke superstitious fear in others, they can experience the rejection of their friends and loved ones too. So much for compassion.

The idea that one can acquire ANYTHING they want is somewhat laughable. I mean, I want the ability to fly by jumping off a roof and flapping my arms. If I "believe" hard enough, will this happen? I wouldn't bet on it. Of course, I guess you could chalk it up to the fact that I have too much doubt. That's where the trickiness of the book comes into play. If something good happens, it's because of The Secret. If something bad happens, you just didn't believe in The Secret enough. Right. Also, the idea that everything bad that happens to you is a direct result from your thinking is just ridiculous. The book is essentially saying that people WANT bad things to happen to them. People WANT to be raped, murdered, kidnapped? What?!?
On the other hand, I do believe in the power of positive thinking. I think the book is right in that your thoughts have a lot of influence over your life. As a psychology major, I definitely agree with this. There have been countless studies showing how thinking positively can influence your health, happiness, etc. Overall, the underlying premise of positive thinking is one that I can support. However, I think The Secret, and the dozen or so life coaches that provide quotes for it, takes this way too far. If you want to read the book, read it for it's general idea of thinking positively and how that can change your life. Please don't actually buy into the idea that the "universe" will give you every little wish your heart desires. Isn't that one of the first things we learn as a child? You don't always get exactly what you want so be happy with what you've got. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-05-29 02:35:44 EST)

Rhonda Byrne had developed a most interesting compilation of 'creation wisdom' in her book 'The Secret.'
All that I can say is I've read this book a few times over. With each reading I understand the wisdom more completely. I highly recommend that you read 'The Secret' because it works like magic! Also read: 'Nexus' by Deborah Morrison & Arvind Singh a fascinating New Age novel about people who are attempting to transform their lives & they are using some aspects of 'The Secret' to do so. This cd set is great if you believe in a higher power. It really reminds you how to think more positive. These cd's tell you things most people already know but a lot of us never really apply it to our everyday lives. I have the book, cd's and dvd. I bought it last year and a few things that I have focused on has happened. Read this if you want better health, more money, or just to remind you to be thankful for the little things in life.

This book is filled with insights into the nature of soul, and how, those who embrace who they are can find abundance on every level of living. This book has a series of authors known in the field of metaphysics who share how energy and the information we choose to focus on enables a lifestyle manifesting itself into physical form the moment emotion and thoughts begin to form within you.I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to live their life intentially and build the life of their dreams. Each page is filled with wisdom that each of us has and ours to use however we choose.

The marketing on this book is so blatently not hidden I commend the author. At least the hypocrisy goes only so far. The content has been said in many other books through the century. There is a discrepency in my opinion when they focus on materialism and wealth. There are positives in most all books. The Secret also has some positive aspects, however the fluff and simplicity sugars down the practicality.
Too many hurting souls will bury their heart into this book, only to find that getting through life crisis is not as simple as rubbing the cover of this book as a magic lamp. Dan Williams author of " Above His Shoulders" (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-05-29 02:35:44 EST)

I read this book in just a few days, I keep it around the house at easy access at all times.
It has been repeatedly noted by those around me that since I read this book, something fundamental in me has changed, or emerged would be a better word. This book...or rather the Universe, showed me that while I am a realist, I am also an optimist. Read it...it changes things, because YOU remember that you are the creator of your reality. This is the worst book I have ever read. Thank God I borrowed it from a friend and didn't spend a cent on this money-making plot. Save yourself the money and the wasted time. Here is the secret: whatever you think about will happen to you. Think good things, get good things. Think bad things get bad things. The end. The book has no structure, no real chapters, just weird paragraph after weird paragraph saying the same thing over and over. Was there an editor involved? It doesn't appear that there was. It is completely incoherent. Does anyone quoted have a college degree? It sure doesn't seem like it.
Law of Nature? What are you talking about? The sad thing is that people are buying this book and the author has become rich. Wait, maybe there is something to this "secret". All she had to do was think "I will write the world's worst book and people will buy it and I will become rich" and it happened! (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-05-29 02:35:44 EST)
