The Sea of Monsters (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 2)

Percy Jackson's seventh-grade year has been surprisingly quiet. Not a single monster has set foot on his New York prep-school campus. But when an innocent game of dodgeball among Percy and his classmates turns into a death match against an ugly gang of cannibal giants, things get . . . well, ugly. And the unexpected arrival of Percy's friend Annabeth brings more bad news: the magical borders that protect Camp Half-Blood have been poisoned by a mysterious enemy, and unless a cure is found, the only safe haven for demigods will be destroyed. In this fresh, funny, and hugely anticipated follow up to The Lightning Thief, Percy and his friends must journey into the Sea of Monsters to save their beloved camp. But first, Percy will discover a stunning new secret about his family -- one that makes him question whether being claimed as Poseidon's son is an honor or simply a cruel joke.

This series is so exciting! One of the best I've read. These books are intense and not for a light read. It's hard for me to be patient while reading these books. I want to hurry and get through the book so I can finish the journey with them and see what happens, also so I can start the next book. Read first...Percy Jackson and the Olympians book one "The Lightning Thief".

Rick Riordan does a wonderful job of continuing the story of Pereus Jackson and his friends from Camp Half-Blood. Kids will be intrigued by both the continuing storyline and by the well done connections to monsters and heroes of Greek mythology. All of this is written with a bit of humor in vocabulary and vernacular that kids understand and relate to. Jessie Bernstien's interpretations of the characters' voices adds to the entertaining quality of the audio book production.

Highly recommended

Excellent book! My son loved this series, and hounded me to read it. I did, and also read it to the fourth and fifth grade classes that I have for Read Aloud. Each week, the kids remembered what had happened the previous weeks, including specific details. And they remained quite attentive while I read, as well - which says a lot about the books ability to keep them involved. I would recomment this for any child 9 years old and up, and even for adults interested in this genre. Only one caveat - it helps to be knowledgeable of basic mythology. Enjoy!

Suspensful...engaging...Great Series for young (my 7 and 11 year old) and old 34 - me alike. Its humor sneaks up on you. you may be in the most suspensful part but Percy and his friends can find humor in any situation or the way they percieve reality is humourous for us. The scenery is decribed in such a way you cannot only see your suroundings but you can feel the chill in the air or the scorching sun on your skin....A great family read for bedtime.

This sequel to The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1) is very much more of the same: A pop version of greek mythology, set in the life of a contemporary teenager. The order matters, so you should certainly start with the first book in the series.

If you have already read that one, this sequel will not disappoint: Indeed, by not having to lay out the rather laborious introductory material, this book gets to the action (the "quest") more quickly, and is the better for it. This time, our heroes quest takes them through a contemporary version of Odysseus' journey. To give you a flavor of the book, his trials on that trip are the explanation for the Bermuda Triangle, and our heroes endure them so as to recapture the Golden Fleece. If that makes you cringe, avoid these books. If not, enjoy.

I should add that the five-star rating is from my 12-year old son (we read these together). These books are certainly targeted at kids and, unlike, say, Harry Potter, I would not read them on my own. Indeed, we are immediately on to book three in the series at his insistence. If I had my druthers, we would take a break, but they are no chore to partake in. Plus, I admire the authors cleverness in taking the ready-made, brilliant, ancient tales as a source for fun, derivative works.

This is the second book in the "Percy and the Olympians" series by Rick Riordan. This was a good book and followed much in the vein of the second book. I listened to this book on audio and the quality of the audio book was wonderful!

Percy is having strange dreams about Grover, his satyr friend who recently left on his quest to search for Pan, being in trouble. Percy and his new friend, Tyson, are attacked by some questionable students during gym class and when Annabeth turns up to help them out Percy is in for a lot of surprises. Percy finds out someone has poisoned the protective pine tree at half blood camp and tons of monsters have been attacking while Percy's been away for the school year. Percy and crew find out that Grover has found the Golden Fleece and he is being held captive by the Cyclopes Polyphemus. When a quest is granted to go after the Golden Fleece it is not given to Percy and crew. Now they are stuck with trying to decide if they should leave school anyway and go after the Fleece.

This was a great book. It was action packed, fun to read, and full of a lot of good humor and great Greek mythology. This book follows in the footsteps of the first book. There is the addition of a lot of good evil characters, as well as some good helpful characters. The plot that ties these books together, the release of the Titan lord, is not resolved in this book but promises to continue full speed in the next book. Other than that this book wraps up nicely with one big surprise at the end.

I liked this book and am looking forward to the third one!

Sea Of Monsters-by Rick Riordan

Sea Of Monsters is the second book in Rick Riordan's modern day spin on classical Greek mythology featuring the adolescent hero Percy Jackson and his demi-god friends. In this follow up to "The Lightening Thief" we see our hero a year older and starting to come to terms with his newly discovered lineage and the skills that come with it.

Having survived another school year, thirteen year old Percy Jackson makes it back to camp half-blood only to discover that camp mentor Chiron been sacked as the activities director. The camp is also under frequent monster attacks because the magical defenses that protect it have been poisoned. Percy's best friend Grover is no where to be found, except at night when he appears regularly in Percy's dreams and in mortal danger. Where is his former mentor Luke? And what about this prophesy that no one wants to talk about? Is this all just coincidence or could it all be part of something much bigger and diabolical?

Fortunately his wise young friend Annabelle, his new pal Tyson, and the odd Olympian deity are there to assist Percy through the collection of classical adventures befitting this young hero.

"Sea Of Monsters" is more action packed than "Lightening Thief". Author Rick Riordan does a very entertaining job of moving Percy and his friends through their paces in this episode. Whether they are trying to stop another Monster Donut store from opening, hanging out with a dead confederate crew, or sampling the local fair at C.C.'s Resort & Spa, the characters seem to move freely and rather whimsically through this story.

I highly recommend this series to anyone who studied classical mythology, and especially if they have read and enjoyed the Harry Potter series. While it does seem to parallel the Potter series on some points; unknowing hero discovers he's important, smart girlfriend, comical best friend sidekick, the lighter tone and twisted humor sets it apart.

National best-selling author, Rick Riordan, has captured the mythological world once again in, The Sea of Monsters. Percy Jackson, our young hero, has finally made it through a whole school year without any trouble from humans or monsters. The only problem is . . . he's having dreams about his best friend Grover, who seems to be in terrible trouble. But is Percy dreaming? You find yourself thinking that maybe the dream is a message of some kind or maybe even a glimpse into the future. But Percy doesn't get a chance to write or call on his trusted teacher, Chiron.

Percy finds things have changed over the school year at Camp Half-Blood and not for the better either. Chiron has been replaced by a bitter ghost who can't eat or drink anything. Grover is still on his mission to find Pan and Percy has no way to contact him to find out if he is indeed in trouble. Annabeth, Percy's other best friend, isn't too keen about his latest friendship. The Aries cabin has found new ways to make his life miserable. And to top it all off the magical boards around Camp Half-Blood are failing.

Percy asks to be sent on another quest to find the Golden Fleece; only to be rejected. Clarisse from the Aries cabin is chosen instead and sets off. Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson (Percy's newest friend) sneak off to help Clarisse find the Golden Fleece; who doesn't want any help from anyone. Percy must find a way to get to the island of an ogre through the Sea of Monsters before Clarisse in order to save Camp Half-Blood.

The book has a fast, but enjoyable pace. I found myself not wanting to put the book down. Every chapter ends on a climatic note and the next chapter doesn't disappoint in keeping the action going after you come down from the high of the chapter before it.

Kids looking for the next Harry Potter will find it in this series, Percy Jackson & The Olympians.

Although Rick Riordan's young fans don't know it, they're getting something of a classical education while they're reading his Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. The stories are set in today's world, with side trips into pure fantasy, but they're told in a simple, down-to-earth way that has won Riordan readers throughout the world.

Greek gods walk through the pages of Riordan's novels for juvenile readers, and they bring with them all the old stories from Greek mythology. I read the first volume of the projected five-book series to my nine year old and we had a blast with it. He was amazed at how I always knew the stories behind the stories and knew so much about the gods themselves.

I explained to him that I read a lot of Greek mythology when I was in third grade. Since getting his interest piqued, he had me buy him a compendium of Greek myths and has been reading constantly. His knowledge has surpassed mine at this point. That's the power of Riordan's storytelling.

Percy Jackson is a great hero for the series. He's an average kid for the most part - ADHD, video game junkie, pop culture freak - except that he has extra problems: he never gets to stay in the same school because some weird thing happens, he gets blamed for it, and then he's expelled. The weird thing that happens is usually some god or monster tries to kill him. Thanks to the Mist, the mystical spell that keeps mere mortals from seeing the gods or their creatures, everyone believes Percy did something.

In the first book, THE LIGHTNING THIEF, Percy finds out he's the son of Poseidon, the god of the seas. He also finds out he has a lot of cool powers while in the water - like being able to breathe underwater and swim superfast. Percy's character, and his pals Annabeth and Grover, are true highlights of the series. I also enjoy the adults as well, Percy's mom, Chiron, the centaur mentor, and Mr. Dionysius, the camp director. Every summer, Percy goes to Camp Half-Blood, where the half-gods go hang out to learn how to fight and be champions, and where they learn their powers and go on quests.

I also like how Riordan is incorporating his own world-building into the myths of the Greek gods. He borrows a lot from the original mythology, but he changes it and warps it to fit the modern world as well. That's important because his young readers get to see how dysfunctional the Greek gods were and how their problems might apply to their own families. That's just one of the lessons that become apparent throughout the books.

THE SEA OF MONSTERS starts out with Percy getting in trouble at school again. He's become friends with a new kid, Tyson, that no one likes, and he's become a target for school bullies that turn out to be monsters in disguise. Their grudge dodgeball match literally destroys the school and it isn't long before it's just a memory and a burning ruin. And the battle will leave most readers laughing their heads off, even though they might be worried about Percy at the same time. Tyson ends up having secrets of his own.

Pursued by the monsters, Percy beats a fast retreat to Camp Half-Blood with Annabeth and Tyson in tow. As soon as he gets there, though, he knows trouble has broken out all over. Thalia's tree, the one that protects Camp Half-Blood, has been poisoned and is dying. The blame has been placed squarely on Chiron.

The tree is important, not only because it protects the camp, but because Zeus turned his daughter Thalia into it as she lay dying. So a lot of bad things are about to start happening. This whole plot point shows how good Riordan's storytelling and world-building is. I knew about the tree and the history from the first book, and now all of that is menaced. You can't help but be drawn in.

Furthermore, to see Chiron take the fall for someone else's evil is just wrong. I couldn't wait for Percy to undertake a quest to figure out exactly what was going on.

But Riordan had some surprises to unveil first. The biggest one is that Percy has a half-brother, and it's a person that Percy would never have guessed. Not only that, but his half-brother is someone no one else at the camp likes. So Percy is shunned by everyone at camp and is more mad at Poseidon than ever.

The second surprise is that Grover, the satyr that has been Percy's friend the longest, is in BIG trouble. He's masqueraded himself as a girl by stealing a wedding dress and has been taken by a Cyclops that plans on marrying him. And if Grover lets the monster find out that he's a satyr and not female, the Cyclops will eat him.

Just as Percy's getting ready to go to Grover's rescue, he also finds out that the Cyclops has the Golden Fleece, and that it can be used to heal Thalia's tree. From that point on, my son and I were swept up in a whirlwind of adventures that placed us on the sea in a ship, shanghaied by zombie pirates, trapped between Scylla and Charybdis (monsters that Jason and the Argonauts and Odysseus had to face in their respective adventures), aboard Blackbeard's pirate ship, and face-to-face with Luke, Percy's archenemy from the first book.

Riordan's Percy Jackson novels are great reads. They're filled with incredible adventures, lots of dialogue and jokes, magic and monsters, and real-life stories that kids (and adults!) can enjoy. We've got the third book in hand, THE TITAN'S CURSE, and are anxiously awaiting Book 4: THE BATTLE IN THE LABYRINTH.

I recommend reading the series in order, but there's enough explanation that you can jump on anywhere. Kids who love fantasy novels and haven't yet found these will thank you forever.

I'm sorry I ever bought these books for my son. This second Percy Jackson book is even worse than the first one. The story was so uninteresting it couldn't hold my interest or my son's.

My other "complaint" is that the characters were so flat. There was not one person who was described physically; especially there was no psychlogical depth to these people. The search for the *prize* was all we knew about any of these folks.

The holding out of some of information was too staged, to obvious. A disturbing event which was introduced early on, was not exposed until much later, but it was referred to over and over. Even the explanations given in two different parts of the books were insufficient for all the build up.

Except for some minor introduction in the beginning, we didn't know much about anything. I can accept a story that is totally plot driven, but so many characters were marched out who were not really developed, they just peopled the landscape.

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless they are bored and the book is free.

In the second book of the modern Greek-mythological Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, Percy discovers that Camp Half-Blood is in danger as their borders are weakening. Even worse, his cross-dressing satyr best friend Grover is in danger of getting married. Percy, his friend and daughter of Athena, go on a quest to save Grover and retrieve the Golden Fleece, doing a great impression of Odysseus along the way. While the book isn't as imaginative and strong as the first in the series, it continues Riordan's witty prose and clever updating of Greek mythology and Greek hero quests (I just go geek for that stuff). Percy's issues with his absent father are compounded with the discovery and shame of his half-brother. Percy's father-issues reflect a very grown up issue: that of feeling abandoned by our God. At heart, this intelligent series isn't just about the greater and universal truths of Greek mythology and the problems of identity and growing up, but about family and the bonds of blood, even the most dysfunctional family in history: that of the ancient Greek divinity. Grade: A-

The next edition of the Percy Jackson series, picks up a few months after the first book The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1)left us. This time Percy, our young half-god hero, has to deal with even more problems then ever.

The half-blood camp is now in danger of being attacked and over run by monsters who were once held out of it's grounds by a tree. The tree has been poisoned and time is running out before the camp will be over run for good. It's up to Percy and his friend Annabeth to get the golden fleece from an evil cyclops who has also captured Grover, his satyr friend.

Joining Percy this time is a young cyclops, Tyson who turns out to be more then he seems, much to Percy's surprise. His great strength and immunity to fire will come in more then handy for Percy on his quest to stop things before they even get worse. Now with Charon banned from camp, his rival daughter of Ares being put on the quest instead of him and Luke, his former friend still out there causing trouble things have gone from bad to worse over the short summer break.

The follow up is pretty good and continues the story nicely. It was lacking in a few places that the first book did deliver on. Like the variety of monsters and fun that seemed to flow through the first adventure. This time it was mostly focused on cyclops and lacking of the character development that was fun the first go around. But that is minor problems if anything. The book delievers the same fun and situations that we fell in love with the first time around. The action is constant as are the refernces to mythology that Rick Riordan uses nicely in a cute and fun twist to relate it to modern times. The explanation for why there are so many Starbucks around was just one of many weird notions that Riordan came up with and for some reason in this universe as we are reading it, we don't question the logic we accept it and want more of it.

If you enjoyed the first, this is must get. It picks up the characters and adventure where it left us and adds in even more twists and turns then we were left with the first go around. Its a never ending story that keeps building up to more and more to look to and figure out. Slight bits of info are leaked to us in this book that will come into play later but are still left open for interpretation.

I can't say this book is better then the first but it is just as good and will most certainly leave you wanting more. Riordan seemed to plan everything out quite well and the reader will also realize that this is getting quite good and deep. As an older reader I can say this book is fun for people of all ages. Check it out, its an adventure you will love to continue on gladly.

Percy Jackson returns for another round of battle with monsters. Last summer he found out that the father he'd never met was a Greek god. Then he had to save the world.

This summer he finds out that he has a brother. AND he has to save the world again. It's a lot of pressure on Percy who until last summer thought of himself as your average everyday ne'er-do-well.

The Sea of Monsters is interesting because Percy reconnects with his friends Annabeth and Grover and makes a new friend in Tyson - a cyclops! Then they all set on a mission to find the Golden Fleece and bring it back from Polyphemus who also happens to be a cyclops.

This page-turner keeps you on the edge of your seat as Percy embarks on this second quest (that really isn't HIS quest after all.)

Riordan is a master of fast-paced action. His quick wit and wonderful talent for dialogue and description make this book a real gem. I love learning more about Greek mythology through these stories too!

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys adventure, mythology, fantasy and action. If you are looking for smart writing and a fast pace, this is for you.

Grover is trapped by the cyclops that Oddysseus ran into, and the cyclops thinks Grover is a lady cyclops and he wants to marry her. Percy is denied the right to go on a quest to save him, and the quest is given to Clarrise, so he, Annabeth, and a baby cyclops Tyson, who is also Percy's half brother, sneak out of camp half blood to rescue Grover themselves. The cyclops also has the golden fleece, the only thing that can save the dieing tree that protects the camp from being overun monsters, so their mission is doubly important. This is a very funny book, even the names of the chapters are funny. For instance: Chapter two is "I Play Dogeball With Cannibals", Chapter three is "We Hail the Taxi of Eternal Torment", Chapter six is "Demon Pigeons Attack", and Chapter fourteen is "We Meet the Sheep of Doom".

great book with hero age 12 and friends looking for The Golden Fleece to save a tree that protects their camp.
One myth error Helle is the girl who falls off the golden ram and lands in the sea. Even today that area is Hellesport, the people of that area call themselves Hellenes and their country Helles (Modern Day Greece by the rest of us)

This book is the 2nd book of a series...The Lightning Thief is the first book and Titan's Curse is the 3rd book. We are anxiously awaiting the 4th and 5th books. The book is exciting, adventurous and fun to read. My boys couldn't stop reading it. This book is good for advance readers in 2nd grade and above. The setting is modern times with Percy being the son of a God (and I won't tell you which God) and his adventures. Fun fun book. The author is a great speaker if you ever have a chances to go see him--he delights the kids with his knowledge and his questions and is very entertaining.

"The Sea of Monsters" isn't quite as strong as "The Lightning Thief," but that won't deter readers from racing through this breakneck-paced book. Like the first book in the series, this story follows the summer adventure and quest of Percy Jackson, half-blood son of Poseidon, and his friends. The story is a lot of fun, and there are many exciting moments and mythological lessons to enjoy. However, the escapes seem too easy and convenient, and it hardly seems as if Percy is ever in any real danger.

Overall, this was enjoyable. I hope the author ups the danger in the next installment.

(Hide Review...)  Another delightful Percy Jackson adventure!!

I love this series. It captures together mythology, magic, teenage angst, the battle between good and evil - Our hero, Percy (Perseus) Jackson, son of Poseidon, anticipates his summer trip to Camp Half Blood - the training ground for demigods - half gods/half mortals - but something's wrong - the magic protection around the camp (including the tree that holds Thalia, Zeus' daughter), has been compromised and monsters and chaos are entering. Percy has also been having dreams about Grover, his bud and satyr, who has gone on a quest to find Pan. Grover is in trouble and needs Percy's help.
It is determined that only the Golden Fleece will negate the chaos at the camp, and Clarisse, Ares' daughter, is chosen by the camp to get it. Percy, Annabelle, and a new character, Tyson, also go - they find out that Grover is in Florida, and the Golden Fleece are on an island in the Sea of Monsters - where else - located in what the mortals call The Bermuda Triangle!!
The book beings mythology to life, and it is so much fun.
Percy finds more of his powers, and we see a well rounded battle between good and evil growing. People (and gods) are choosing sides.
It helps to be versed in Greek mythology, but Riordan has made a delightful mix of gods and monsters and relates that to the backdrop of the 21th century.
It is a great continuation to the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series.

This Percy Jackson and the Olympians series is well written, fast paced, interesting and has been loved by my grandchildren from age 9 through the 20 year old, and their parents have loved them too, as have I.
Heartily recommend all of this series to all: good English, good values, teaching about Greek Mythology, and really fun!

Percy Jackson is my guy!

I love the clever way Rick Riordan makes the ancient Greek myths come alive. The stories are fresh and exciting, with terrific characters that are incredibly fun to follow on their adventures. Percy is a sort of modern day Holden from Catcher in the Rye, kicked out of too many schools to count. His life takes a dramatic turn when he finds out the truth of his parentage and gets involved in the hero business. Book one is a fast paced introduction to Percy, his friends and enemies. Book two is just as delightful as the original, and the plot twists will keep you guessing until the last page!

My seven year old mythology nut and my ten year old who never got into the HP craze both loved The Lightning Thief and The Sea of Monsters. My daughter actually read the second book all the way through in a single sitting! It's that enthralling.

The reading level is probably about 5th grade, with kids who know Greek mythology having a decided advantage in understanding the subtle jokes and foreshadowing. The stories contain magic, violence, and oblique reference to the extramarital sex lives of the gods and goddesses.

I was recommended this book when I ordered Jason Rider's fantastic Tucker O'Doyle series and am very glad I decided to try it. Wonderful use of Greek Mythology and a fast, fluid plot keep the pages turning. Better than the original!

Still the wonderful humour and great adventure story that the first book was. Riordan pumps this full of all sorts of mythical references, mainly Golden Fleece and Oddyssey in this book. Kronos is up to his old tricks of treachery and there are some great scenes of Percy having to work with people he normally wouldn't.

I'm still waiting for the whole Annabell as the daughter of Athena thing to clear up ('cause that is so not part of the mythology cannon).

Percy is doing a great job of keeping his head straight in this adventure and we get to see a little bit more of what he can do as the son of Poseidon. There is a great new character, Tyson, a baby cyclopes that Percy comes across (their relationship is great). And the book ends with quite the big drama, definately will have to see what happens in the next book!
