I used this book along with the Real ACT book, the McGraw Hill 10 Practice Tests, and Sparknotes Guide to the ACT. I found that this books was one of the more helpful ones. The strategies given are insignificant, as it is a conflict of interest. This book's value is attributed only by the 3 practice tests. The three practice tests are exactly the same as you would see them during test day. The answer sheet is exactly the same, and there are also blanks for you to add your personal information as you would during test day. That example shows that the book prepares you so that you will not be unpleasantly surprised during test day. The tests are exactly the same in content as you would find during test day. The answer explanations are one of the best aspects of this book; you will find out exactly what you did wrong as the explanations are completely thorough. By practicing on a real ACT, finding out what you did wrong, and using the corrections through the extensive explanations to deter future mistakes, the Real ACT book is the way to go.

This book helped me get a 33!

The 2008 Copyright Second Edition, Revised and Updated by ACT, The Real ACT Prep Guide, has exactly the same sample questions, tests and test questions, as the 2005 Real ACT Prep Guide. If you have the 2005 Copyright, this new, second edition will not give you any additional, original practice. Misleading advertising.

I think that this book did a pretty good job helping me prepare for this test. The practice tests are the best part. The rest is okay, but the practice tests seemed pretty similar to the actual test. By using this book, I made a 33 composite on the ACT.

If you would like some pointers or interesting ways to remember hints, try The ACT For Dummies in addition to this book, but not alone!

(Hide Review...)  Great practice tests, -1 star for lack of review material

This is the best book for ACT practice tests. for starters this book actually contains 3 "retired" Act tests from the past. For EVERY question it has: The right answer + explanation, and the wrong answers + explanation on why they are wrong.

for those of you looking for more review material i suggest Kaplan ACT 2008 Comprehensive Program (Kaplan Act) or Kaplan ACT 2008 Premier Program (w/ CD-ROM) (Kaplan Act (Book & CD-Rom)) . Not only does it have a ton of review, it has practice tests that are very similar to this book(which means they are also very similar to the real thing)

btw with the help of this book + kaplan i got a 28 composite score on the June ACT (93 percentile)

I can tell you what this book tells you here in this review. Guessing is ok which they tell you when you take the test. Other than examples of questions there is not much that really helps you in this book. Maybe I'm slow but if I'm going to pay for help on a test I expect results.

I'd have to recommend this book. Remember to practice for this test!

Essentially, the test breaks down into having to answer every question within a 30second time span (they give you about 30min divided by 60questions per test, essentially). On top of that, they make the questions a paragraph long and/or make you need to re-read the question after reading the answers. This all equates to not having enough time (hence their instructions say to "fill in all answers regardless").

Unfortunately, I got this book right before my test date, so it was of little use to me. However, I can see how it would have helped my test scores - I definitely was not prepared for the time-issue on this test as I'm a quick reader/test-taker. I can't help but say it, but it's almost set up so you have to buy this "official" book (hence they get 4 stars instead of 5).

So be prepared and do all three tests in this book multiple times, it'll help!

The Real ACT book is one of the best books of its kind. I teach SAT and ACT prep, and this book not only is well formatted with REAL ACT problems (by the test-makers), but the book gives the fullest explanations of the correct and incorrect answers that I have ever seen. I'm using it exclusively in my classes. Parents looking to help their kids get prepared should buy NO OTHER BOOK.

I'm a college student and I coordinate an ACT tutoring program for the inner-city high schools and we purchased 5 copies of this book. So far, it's been a very good resource. I felt that the best way to prepare for the ACT exam is to PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE -- so we just work through problems from the exams and go over the answers. And this book comes with 3 REAL ACT EXAMS! PERFECT for what we're doing. :D

Not the best review or test taking tips; ACT is not going to give too much away. The value of this book is in the three practice tests it contains. There is no substitute for practicing on the real thing. Answers and detailed explanations are included.

(Hide Review...)  Same book as 1st edition!!!!
Reviewer Permalink
Please note that this book is exactly the same as the 1st edition. So if you can find the 1st edition cheaper go for it.

If you can't find the first edition, then get this one bacuse it is well worth the price. This book has 3 tests (though they are a bit dated- I was hoping for an updated set of tests, but meh-no biggie), answers and explanations. While the tests are valuable, the explanations make the book cheap, since with CB's book (Official SAT Study Guide) you need to buy the Onlone Course for explanations ($70)or buy some guy's (who no one knows) solution manual here on Amazon.

In conclusion, great prep book for the ACT, and the SAT sux vag.
