The Pregnancy Journal: A Day To Day Guide To A Healthy And Happy Pregnancy

Since its publication in 1996, this definitive journal for expectant families has sold over a million copies. Author A. Christine Harris brings a revised and thoroughly updated edition to today s parents-to-be. Still featuring daily entries, a personalized timeline, and pregnancy glossary, the revised edition provides a clearer picture of the baby's in-utero development and the latest advice about giving a growing baby every advantage prior to birth.
Whether this is pregnancy number 1 or number 10, nothing makes it easier to connect with a growing baby than knowing exactly what magical development is happening every day. Filling the need for practical information, medical data, emotional and spiritual fuel, and even "pregnancy trivia," The Pregnancy Journal is easily one of the best books available for a woman or couple expecting a baby. The journal contains about half a page of information for each day from conception through delivery. Nutrition, how to avoid discomforts associated with pregnancy, childbirth customs in other cultures, and practical parenting tips are among the topics touched on. Many days in the journal have a great section called "Did You Know"; for example, from Day 49: "The baby's arms at this point are only as long as this printed 1." At the bottom of each page is a quote from a literary or historical figure; some are sentimental, some pithy, some humorous, all inspiring.

The information and quotes seem to invite musings and speculation on the miracle unfolding inside the womb; there is some space for recording data and thoughts, but if you want to write more than just a few lines every few days, you might want to have a blank journal to accompany The Pregnancy Journal. The format of this book makes it much more manageable and inviting than most books on pregnancy, and the information is made even more accessible by the inclusion of a glossary/subject index in the back. Don't wait until the shower to give this excellent resource and thoughtful gift--moms-to-be will want to have it from the very beginning. --Katherine Ferguson

I love this book. It has day by day development for Mommy and baby. It also has lots of places to right small notes about cravings, mood, weight, and your own thoughts. I received this for my first pregnancy and bought it myself for my second. Be careful when you buy that you be sure to get the "revised" version since it has more pages to write in details about planning your feelings about the pregnancy, hopes and dreams for you baby and extra pages for notes.

i bought this book from a local bookstore and it was wrapped in plastic, so i didn't get to see what i was buying until i got it home. it has good information, but i wanted something that would let me write (like a journal should) about my feelings and put in pictures of ultrasounds. i'm keeping this b/c like i said it's good info but the title is misleading - it should The Pregnancy Book, not Journal.

This is the best book a newly pregnant woman could own. Not only does it have interesting and valuable information about the growth of your baby, your own body changes, nutritional facts and parenting tips but it has spaces for you to record your own personal journey through your pregnancy that you can keep forever and even show your unborn baby when it's grown.
This is the second time I have purchased this book, the first time was 7 years ago when I had my first child and I would purchase a third if I was to get pregnant again.
A.Chrisine Harris,Ph D has done a great job on the book and the revised version is awesome!

This is a wonderful book. You can read one entry a day at a time, according to your own progressing pregnancy. Of course, this should not be the only pregnancy book that you purchase. You will get more detailed and professional information from "What to Expect When You are Expecting". But pregnancy can be really stressful at times and you don't always want to be overwhelmed with all of the information available. That is where this book comes in. And it helps you to visualize how your baby is growing day by day.

(Hide Review...)  Great information, not really a journal
Reviewer Permalink
Like all the other reviewers said, this is a great sources of information about how your baby is developing every day. That is the strength of this book - it is great to have a sense of what is happening each day. Each day also provides little tidbits about nutrition, or pregnancy. The information is generally solid, although if you really want information on nutrition, when to see your care provider, challenges like morning sickness or headaches, etc. you should get a book with more detail and an explanation of the various thinking/approaches to the issue. For instance, this book recommends not touching any alcohol throughout your pregnancy, when, in reality, regular drinking is a problem - not a glass of wine every other week. But the key thing to know about this book is that IT IS NOT A JOURNAL. Not in the sense that there is a place for you to write thoughts each day, or keep track of memories or milestones, unless you write in the margins. There are places for notes at the end of each month, and a few places for notes throughout the book, and a place to record your weight and waist size every so often, but this book IS MOSTLY INFORMATIONAL, not an actual journal where you can keep good track of things like diet, exercise, thoughts, hopes, dreams struggles. There just isn't enough room for that. In short: great for reading about the daily development of the baby, not great for keeping a pregnancy journal.

(Hide Review...)  Excellent Journal for IVF Pregnancies!!
Reviewer Permalink
As an IVF mom who's never experienced periods, I especially appreciated the author's including the 38 week(266 day)Expected Delivery Date along with the LMP method to determine the expected date of delivery. This type of journal actually works great for me because my pregnancy began the day my physician transfered my 3 day embryos into my uterus and lasted 37 weeks and 1 day. Not having periods, I found myself making up a date for LMP because I got tired of being asked that question at appointments. The constant reminding that my pregnancy was IVF became tiresome. It really helped that Dr. Harris' journal includes both methods for pregnant moms like me. I'm now beginning my 2nd pregnancy and know that the day my embryos were transfered is day 4. It's great to know exactly where in the journal to began and contrary to the few that didn't like the daily aspect of this journal, As a person experiencing a miracle pregnancy I found it very comforting to know exactly what was going on and enjoyed the many diet and parenting tips. Highly recommended if your pregnancy is assisted through reproductive technology.

I am so glad that I purchased this book. It is fun to read each week and see how your baby is growing and what to expect. My husband and I love to read it together. I also like how it gives tips for nutrition and relief for common aches and pains. It does not create "anxiety" like most pregnancy books. It also is a great gift for expectant mothers (I have purchased a few for friends). You will not be dissappointed.

I started using this book when I was about 3 months pregnant and since I didn't know when I conceived and didn't remember when my last period was I counted backwards from what my doctor said was my due date. My husband and I would read a page everyday and it was a nice bonding experience. Even thought it's not written by a doc I found it pretty accurate as far as the comments that tell you you'll be having backpain, swelling, etc, etc. I would not take this as a medical resource book but more as entertainment

Pros:

As a mom to be of color, this is one of the few books I've come across that doesn't have a mom or baby of a particular race on the cover. I like that.

There is daily information about the development of my baby, nutrional info, fun facts about childbirth and child rearing in different cultures, and small quotes along the bottom of each page. (I'm a sucker for quotes)

There are places for you to write in your own unprompted observations, thoughts, etc. Cool.

Cons: Teh spiral format can be a little weird at times. Every so often, it gets in this weird "way" and it can be difficult for me to close the book properly.

This is my biggest con and so far, a huge pet peeve with this book: The author lists the day of conception as being the third week of your LMP. This continuously throws me off because while reading the book, it is constantly a week off.

Other than that, good book.

Reviewer Permalink
I absolutely love this journal! Day by day it tells me so many tidbits about myself and my growing baby, as well as great quotes. I feel closer to my baby as I learn what is going on and even tell my husband! There is just enough white space each day to write a little bit if you needed to. Depending on the day, I have written events (ie Today we got your crib! or a short story) I even added sonogram pictures. However, if you are a person who likes to write a lot on a daily basis or add lots of pictures/mementos, this is not the journal for you. If you like to write 1-2 sentences every few days, or sometimes a little more, and would like fun and interesting info, this is perfect!

I looked at every pregnancy journal before choosing this one - it is a different format from most others, it takes you through the pregnancy day by day with details of how the baby is growing. It has spaces to record, weight changes, moods, food cravings etc, and some pages for more detailed logging with questions, spaces to write your own notes etc. I found most journals to be overkill - I don't have time to detail everyday of my pregnancy. If you want a lot of space to document changes, add photos, include doctor visit info - this is not the journal for you.

Those 40+ weeks of pregnancy can seem like forever. I was sent this journal at the start of my first one and really enjoyed it. I did not use the journal pages, though I'm sure this is a lovely thing for many people. What I did do was read each day's entry every evening with my husband. Every night we'd read about the development of our child - a short snippet with just enough info to allow us to visualize the baby.

This was also a perfect way to keep my husband in the loop. When it's all going on in your body, you are far more likely to read all the books, cruise all the web sites, and do all the research. This kept my husband up to date on the process, without making him read What to Expect or something similar that is clearly geared toward pregnant women.

My only gripe is the bizarre cover art.

We used this journal with our first. Filled it in faithfully and wished there had been slightly more space to write in. As we are expecting our 2nd, it just seems we have less time to record the journal which makes the space available to write in seem perfect now. For the critics that the pregnancy progress was generic, well we read everything (funny or technical) for the first pregnancy. We didn't need to have the journal contain in depth technical info wrapped around our personal thoughts during the pregnancy. The journal is for our thoughts at different stages of the pregnancy. There are many other technical books for 1st timers to read and read and read... For the seasoned parents less is more. Hard cover, Spiral Bound, It has held up nicely. Shipped with 4 to 5 bent pages. It now goes nicely with the autographs our 3 year old added.

If you are looking for a blank journal - this isn't the book for you. If you are looking for a way to daily connect with the child growing within your womb - this is the perfect book for you. It was a psychological lifesaver for me. When my back was aching and nausea overwhelmed me I would often go to this book and read and it always reminded me that all the tough times of pregnancy are well worth it! I love the in depth detail on the estimated events that are happening. I realize that we all progress differently so the timing may not be perfect. However, as a nurse I am impressed with the accuracy of the material.

I have two sons and purchased a book during each pregnancy. I love reading through my notes in the books and recalling the sweet (and not so sweet) memories of pregnancy. We are planning on trying for another baby soon and this is the top book on my list! It will be a very special part of each of our children's memory chest.

I bought this book on Amazon and after actually looking through the pages decided that it really isn't much of a journal at all. This book has very few places to write anything - I ended up just buying a journal and writing in it weekly about my pregnancy. I wasn't looking for a book that tells me about my pregnancy and how it is progressing (let alone day-by-day) - I already had tons of books on that topic! Anyway - there are much better pregnancy journals out there. I just wish I could suggest one but since I decided to keep my own I can't. Sorry! On the other hand, if you are looking for a great journal for AFTER your baby is born I loved the one I bought - "Cradle the Thought - A Journal for the New Mother's First Year". Good luck!

This journal/book gives you daily info on the progress and growth of your baby based on your EDD. It's so amazing to know exactly how your baby grows into a baby.

This provides exact details of how folds turn into head, spine, heart, when the amniotic sac starts providing blood, circulation, so truly amazing!

It also provides space for waist & weight measurements & general notes.

I think it could use some more notes pages, as I would like to keep track of daily symptoms, but maybe thats just me.

What an amazing book! I took notes in my copy four years ago when I was pregnant with my first child, and it was so cool to read about his growth each day. Now that I'm pregnant with my second, I'm actually using the same copy to record things along side the first notes. Not only is the book a wealth of developmental information and tips on how to stay healthy through your pregnancy, but it offers space to record your own thoughts, feelings, and physical changes. Very fun the first time around, and even more so now, when I can compare how I was feeling at the same stage of each pregnancy.

This book helped my husband and me connect with the baby's development day to day. My husband read it every day and it kept him involved in all the phases of the pregancy. I ordered the First Year Journal after our daughter was born and he is just as glued to that. I especially like the quotes of little bits of wisdom, humor, or just reflectionsat the bottom of the pages.

I used this journal to document my first pregnancy. It had a lot of interesting information about the development stages of the baby in utero. It also had some room for journaling and such but I didn't think there was enough room to write much. I also found some of the journaling prompts repetitive.

I found this journal to be very interesting and informative about both the baby's development and changes I was experiencing. All the side notes about other cultures are interesting too. This does not cover much of the medical/technical stuff in detail so I would not purchase as my only pregnancy book.
