The Pregnancy Countdown Book: Nine Months of Practical Tips, Useful Advice, and Uncensored TruthsQuirk Books

The average pregnancy lasts 280 days and the suspense can be excruciating!

The Pregnancy Countdown Book starts on Day 280 and counts down the biggest milestones every step of the way with one page of helpful information for each day of your pregnancy. Here are tips from doctors and midwives, amusing anecdotes and quotes, and occasional gory-but-necessary details (if you can define the word "lochia," you know what we're talking about).

Every page offers an interesting revelation. On Day 231, your baby will be the size of a blueberry but by Day 168, he'll be the size of a large avocado. By Day 124, you'll need to stop sleeping on your back; by Day 90, air travel becomes a dicey proposition. And if you haven't planned the nursery by Day 45, you're playing with fire.

A perfect gift for expecting moms of all ages, The Pregnancy Countdown Book is a delightfully irreverent look at the craziest nine months of your life.

I bought this book along with What to Expect When You're Expecting. I like this book the best out of the two I bought. I like the baby descriptions each week, along with the info of new things happening to your body each week and each trimester. It is a nice overview. I would definitely recommend this book to a friend in a heartbeat. It's a great reference and an easy and funny read. I'm excited to read each week what is happening in that belly of mine!

this has been a nice book that gives you general descriptions at the the beginning of each week, then nice quotes from real moms each day. not a strictly medical based book, but a light book to help guide you through your pregnacny day by day.

I did not want to read about all the bad stuff that could happen and freak myself out. This book was perfect for me. It has the facts of what is going on and what to expect, a little advice from other moms and a doctor. It is nice to pick it up and read what is going on in the belly day by day. I also like that is gave information as to what will be happening at the doctors appointments. Out of ALL the pregnancy books I bought this one is the one I go to the most. Don't want to be grossed out read this one. Want to know anything and everything that could happen might want to pick something else.

It seems like so many people who write books on pregnancy want to warn you about all the things that could go wrong with your baby. Yes, there are complications, but why tell all of the negative things to a hormonal woman?! This book is honest about pregnancy without making me paranoid. My husband and I read it together each week and get great information, useful advice, and some humor along with it! I agree with the other reviewer, something to stock up on for future mom's to be!

This book really doesn't hold anything back. It tells you all of the bad, messy, upsetting stuff that happens during pregnancy. It kind of scared me a bit but I definately learned some things that I did not know before because nobody ever talks about it after pregancy. Cute book, some funny parts, an easy read, overall I think it was okay.

The Good: There are some useful hints and there are quotes from experienced mothers offering good advice. It's encouraging to read that other mothers share your concerns.

The Bad: Overall, there's very little actual information beyond a handful of tidbits. Some of the information seems outdated despite the fact that this is not an old book (this book implies that you have to buy a bassinet but the fact is you don't actually NEED one). Also, while the day-by-day layout of this book is interesting, it's not very practical. If you're looking for one specific issue, you'll have a hard time finding it.

The Ugly: A lot of this book is written in a "cutesy" tone that I found annoying. When I'm looking for practical information the last thing I want to read is girly chit-chat.

The bottom line is I'm a straightforward, matter-of-fact person and while this isn't a terrible book it's just not my kind of book. I recommend "Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy" and "Baby Bargains" instead of this book.

With my first pregnancy came all the excitement plus tons of questions and fears... after browsing a lot I decided to buy this book for two basic reasons: It gives you just enough information so you are not bombarded with knowledge, and the author talks about things in such a fun and interesting manner that relaxes you.
I not only got the information I wanted but the book was also very relaxing to read... I would highly recommend this book...but if you want detailed information then this may not be right for you.

This book is really ONLY for the first-time mom who has a corporate job. I happen to be pregnant with my second child, but it will have been 4 1/2 years since my first was born, so I was looking for a book with some refreshers about the little nuances of pregnancy (so many of which i have forgotten)! But rather than focusing on body changes, physical feelings, and helpful suggestions, it is more of a focus on navigating your way through your corporate job while being pregnant.

If you fit the first-time-mom-with-corporate-job description, i bet you'll love this book!

But as for me, I am disappointed that I spent the money on it.

(Hide Review...)  A special excercise for spouses....
Reviewer Permalink
This is a great 'add-on' book. If you're on your first pregnancy with lots of questions and concerns, get another book as your primary resource. (I asked my OB for a book he recommended, and that way ended up with one that agreed with most of what he said...cut down on confusion a lot!)

BUT...as a fun day by day source for little tidbits that you might miss in the big books, or that the big books just don't cover because they don't seem that important, this book is great. Each week there is a recap on your babies growth and developement, and otherwise there will just be an interesting little bit of information...when to expect certain things, how to respond to people who are rude about your belly, etc. It also has a little section for up to two weeks post-delivery date (and I ended up reading every one of those 14 days! haha).

What was great about this book was that it was just a nice, short couple of paragraphs each day, and my husband would read each day to me just before we turned out the lights for the night. Then off would go the lights, we'd talk about what we'd just read, say a prayer for baby, and drift off dreaming of her....
What a wonderful way to end each day, and what a wonderful bonding excercise for me and my husband, and a great way to bring him closer to baby, as well. Focusing on the baby and the developtment daily really helped make everything more real for him, and helped him connect to the whole pregnancy.
I've just found out number two is one its way, and we are looking for another similar book to do the same thing with.

(Hide Review...)  good information in an easy to read format
Reviewer Permalink
i like this book because it's short enough that i can read a few pages and then put it down. i like the countdown format but i would advise reading a few weeks ahead because some of the experiences are right on for where you are and some you may experience before the specific week/days that it's mentioned. i also have the mayo clinic guide to a healthy pregnancy which is excellent for more medical info but this book talks about physical and emotional aspects of pregnancy. for those that are concerned there is a medical doctor as a co-author. i felt relieved reading about the tiredness (which i've never in my life experienced like this) so the book is good for letting you know what you might feel while pregnant. it's good in the first weeks when you aren't openly discussing your pregnancy with everyone to get advice and hear what other pregnant women experience. the short format and easy read is great because i just don't have the energy right now to read through pages and pages of text. highly recommended.

I'm only 11 weeks into this book and loving it. After reading all of the medical books surrounding pregnancy, this book is based on the literal experience. At some points comedic, and others sympathetic with your feelings. The best use for this book is reassurance. When you need to remember your crazy emotions are normal, or that your S.O. isn't the only one acting weird, this book reminds you. There's cute quotes from other moms, and a detailed explanation week by week of what you're going through. So far it's perfectly timed. SO worth the money.

The pregnancy countdown is in my personal top 3. I love the format of the book (light, small, 1 day of pregnancy=1 page). Helps you visualize your baby (mine's the size of a lemon right now), you get advice (usually coming from other moms and dads), a to do list (join a bulletin board), baby's activities (flipping, yawning, etc.) and so on. Reads very well. On the downside...no pictures at all.

I really like this book. It counts down your pregnancy day by day, and each page has helpful information, especially for first time moms. At each new week, it tells you the approximate size and weight of your baby, and the rest of their development at that point. Each page provides you with tips and advice from doctor's and moms who have been there. I look forward to each new day, but it's hard not to read ahead! ;-) It's a very fun and easy read. With that said, this book throws out many random facts and 'tidbits' of information. It does not take the place of a true pregnancy guide that covers everything from fetal development to labor and delivery options, to newborn care. I think every woman expecting should have this book. My husband loves to read it too!

Me and my husband are thinking about getting pregnant this year. I bought this book to learn more about what was going to happen to my body. This book covers all "four" trimesters, as she calls it. It has wonderful information, and input from real mothers and a wonderful doctor. I really learned so much. It covers how doctors determine your due date, how the baby is changing and growing inside your belly, the changes that will happen to your body i.e. stretch marks etc., changes in your relationship with your significant other, preparing your home for baby, what to take with you to the hospital, exactly what happens while you are in labor, when to ask for drugs, exactly how an epidural works and is administered, and what to expect afterwards when you have your baby at home. It covers even more than what I've described here. I really couldn't put this book down. I would definitly recommend it. The author gives us this information, but keeps it light hearted and quirky. I'm so glad that she wrote it.

I have to admit that I was looking for books with more straight forward information on pregnancy without all of the humor and frills. But decided to get one book that may lighten things up a bit. This book has been great. There has been so many times when I have read this book on a day to day and find that they were so right on how I was feeling or what I was thinking. It tells you how to get through some things and at the same time seems to really understand the pregnant woman. This is not a reference book by any means but is still a good book to add to your library.

I started off with this book and two others when I found out I was pregnant. I really enjoyed this one because it is easy to read, has honest information and advice from real moms, and unlike almost all the other pregnancy books I read, it didn't concentrate so much on EVERYTHING that can go wrong. It was a lot more upbeat and I looked forward to reading it every week. The layout with the days countdown at the top of every page also made it easy to go back and reference. A friend of mine gave me this book early on in my pregnancy. And I will continue to pass it along to my other friends who are pregnant.

I've enjoyed this book tremendously. It presents useful and honest information with humor! How refreshing! I looked forward to reading this book each night, to lighten things up a bit, and to make me laugh when I was feeling so lousy during the first trimester.

I purchased the Mayo Clinic's Guide To a Healthy Pregnancy (which is excellent, by the way) to satisfy my need for in-depth, professional information regarding all aspects of pregnancy. The Pregnancy Countdown Book is a wonderful supplement to your "more serious" reading.

Bottom Line: anything that can make me laugh in the face of daily nausea and vomiting deserves 10 stars!

I really enjoy having this book in my "pregnancy library"; it sits on the nightstand beside my bed and once or twice each week, I review the milestones my baby is encountering.

The book is not intended to be a medical text or comprehensive guide to all the biological changes that pregnancy causes, but don't we [pregnant women] already have enough of those? The book is fantastic in helping to visualize my baby's size and appearance, and also in helping me prepare for the delivery without turning me off by interjectng her stance on certain issues.

Too many of the books available dedicated to pregnacy claim to give you all the information you need, but if you read word-for-word, you can easily discern the author's bias on many controversial issues (for example: "breast is best!" or the circumcision debate). I love that Magee simply informs you that you need to make a decision and doesn't make you feel guilty for making that choice!

I also love the often-humorous quotes provided by real moms. I will certainly buy this book for all of my friends when they're having their first babies. It has certainly helped the past 34 weeks speed by!
