| The Power of Now : A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
It's no wonder that The Power of Now has sold over 2 million copies worldwide and has been translated into over 30 foreign languages. Much more than simple principles and platitudes, the book takes readers on an inspiring spiritual journey to find their true and deepest self and reach the ultimate in personal growth and spirituality: the discovery of truth and light. In the first chapter, Tolle introduces readers to enlightenment and its natural enemy, the mind. He awakens readers to their role as a creator of pain and shows them how to have a pain-free identity by living fully in the present. The journey is thrilling, and along the way, the author shows how to connect to the indestructible essence of our Being, "the eternal, ever-present One Life beyond the myriad forms of life that are subject to birth and death." Featuring a new preface by the author, this paperback shows that only after regaining awareness of Being, liberated from Mind and intensely in the Now, is there Enlightenment.

Ekhart Tolle's message is simple: living in the now is the truest path to happiness and enlightenment. And while this message may not seem stunningly original or fresh, Tolle's clear writing, supportive voice, and enthusiasm make this an excellent manual for anyone who's ever wondered what exactly "living in the now" means. Foremost, Tolle is a world-class teacher, able to explain complicated concepts in concrete language. More importantly, within a chapter of reading this book, readers are already holding the world in a different container--more conscious of how thoughts and emotions get in the way of their ability to live in genuine peace and happiness.
Tolle packs a lot of information and inspirational ideas into The Power of Now. (Topics include the source of Chi, enlightened relationships, creative use of the mind, impermanence, and the cycle of life.) Thankfully, he's added markers that symbolize "break time." This is when readers should close the book and mull over what they just read. As a result, The Power of Now reads like the highly acclaimed A Course in Miracles--a spiritual guidebook that has the potential to inspire just as many study groups and change just as many lives for the better. --Gail Hudson |

Eckhart Tolle is emerging as one of today's most inspiring teachers. In The Power of Now, already a word-of-mouth bestseller in Canada, the author describes his transition from despair to self-realization soon after his 29th birthday. Tolle took another ten years to understand this transformation, during which time he evolved a philosophy that has parallels in Buddhism, relaxation techniques, and meditation theory but is also eminently practical. In The Power of Now he shows readers how to recognize themselves as the creators of their own pain, and how to have a pain-free existence by living fully in the present. Accessing the deepest self, the true self, can be learned, he says, by freeing ourselves from the conflicting, unreasonable demands of the mind and living present, fully, and intensely, in the Now.

This book helps one see themselves in a world of the time bound unconscious ego. Helps one work towards reducing finally removing the ego's subversive tactics so that what is left is NOW & Being Conscious.

Eckhart Tolle, from my point of view, is the best spiritual writer for our western society. As we practice being in the Now, giving all our attention to the present moment, we become more conscious and therefore more peaceful, enjoying all that the One Life gives us.

Eckhart Tolle has certainly written a 'masterpiece' with this consciousness expanding book 'The Power of Now.'
Potent insights are plentiful along with thought provoking revelations on focused intent, inner peace, acceptance, & true joy, by means of moving beyond 'ego' into enlightened consciousness. Echart Tolle explains that in essence living in ego consciousness results in selective perception and distorted interpretation. Eckhart Tolle also shows the reader how to move beyond the ego into a more expanded awareness that leads you into the direct experience of spiritual realization. As a result you will be able to see clearly and be of light consciousness. Also important is the realization that to experience true peace you must recognize the impermanence of all forms. A highly recommended book. Better together with 'Nexus' by Morrison & Singh, an enlightening story that reflects all of the precepts found in "The Power of Now." 'Nexus' takes you on a realistic, true to life spiritual adventure with a colorful group of characters who are struggling with various obstacles in life as they attempt to journey beyond their ego to discover true peace, and transform their lives. In other words 'Nexus' takes the ideas found in "The Power of Now" and clearly demonstrates, in story form, how people try to apply these concepts in their own lives to deepen their experience of peace, to empower themselves, and to transform their lives. How much of your day is actually spent completely focused in the here and now? When you are working, how often do you find your mind wandering? How much of your time is spent thinking about what you are going to do next weekend or wishing you'd handled a particular situation differently?
The majority of us spend most of our life fixated on the past or worrying about the future. The present is just something that we gloss over until we realize that we missed out on something. Then, we yearn to have that day back. What we tend to forget is that all we really have is now. The past is gone it no longer exists, except in memory. These experiences can't be changed in any way. Dream or worry about the future as much as you want but no one is promised these things, good or bad. This moment that's all. Make it count and really experience it. It's a bit scary and freeing all at the same time to know that all we have is right now. More and more, I find myself feeling the here and now and listening to my intuition. I understand quality rather than quantity in my daily life. When I get off balance or upset, I see the fear scenarios playing and I re-center myself. 'THE POWER OF NOW' instructs you to focus on a single item at a time vs. being scattered in thought, action or emotion. This approach to life will help you obtain fulfillment and peace of mind. This seems like common sense, but the book reminds you of the things whicht are important and how to handle daily life.
The author repeats the same thing over and over in this book. I then realized it was necessary in order to have people obtain the correct mind-set. If you haven't read this book by Tolle, my advice is do so. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-21 01:10:04 EST)

I bought this book when it first came out, and I still have it and enjoy reviewing it to this day.
I have wondered at the hypocrisy of 'enlightened' people wanting to share their knowledge and at the same time collecting huge publishing royalties. i.e. Deepak Chopra, Andrew Weil, Dalai Lama, Pema Chodron et al. The singular fact that only Eckhart's books are sold at cost speaks volumes to the reality of his enlightenment. Think about it. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-18 01:11:13 EST)

I read Eckhart quite some time ago , and put the book away.Much time later I read another one, and put it away too.I wonder why people write so many long and so vehement reviews about how great he is or how silly he is.I have ordered two of his DVD's in german, and they are a very good way of improving my skills in that language.I have also noticed that most of the one star reviews come from people who think some author should be read instead of him,be it the Buddha,Krishnamurti,Ramana , this great man or that great man.I am not saying they should not read what they find serious, nor am I saying they should read Tolle.I have nothing for or against this author.I even enjoyed some sentences in the book, but that was all,no matter from where he got those ideas.

"The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle, is a informative book, with a fresh and new perspective of ideas thrown in. The main focus of the book is "how to live your life in the Now, and making the most of it." I own most of Mr Tolle books, after I first discovered his live recorded sessions on the web.
I recommend the following: Amazon Kindle The Definitive Guide - Includes all Kindle tricks and hidden features, Kindle user keyboard shortcuts, how to use Kindle for internet and email, also where to obtain free Kindle books which includes everything you ever wanted to know about the Amazon Kindle and eReaders in general. This book was a revelation for me, and helped me tremendously. That said, it was unfortunately boring, repetitive and "full of unnecessary words". I believe Tolle could've achieved the same result with 50 pages instead of the 224 in the book.
It should've been either fully psychological or fully "spiritual". I don't doubt Tolle "seeing the light" but it was less believable once I felt that he was listening to himself talk. Again, the first part of the book was very powerful, and helped me be in the 'NOW', after that, for the second part, I had to skip passages, and run toward the last page. To read with a manual on how to use it fast. ;-) (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-09 01:12:13 EST)

My wife and I have listened to this book over and over. Each time we get another nugget. If you are ready and willing to "wake-up" to the truth and beauty of your own true Self, this book will help a great deal. It is couched in modern terminology, with a clear aim to help move past the false "ego-self". Life often seems to make no sense at all - this book helps see through all that. Not as the main text, but woven in, are a few quotes from Jesus and other spiritual masters I have never understood. They are clearly explained and I feel I understand them now. I suggest you get the audio copy. Listening to some of the same things several times over has helped me get nuances I may have missed.

'THE POWER OF NOW' by Eckhart Tolle relates to Buddhist philosopy that highlights focusing on one thing at a time & not being scattered in thought, emotion, or action. This approach to life seems to make you feel peaceful & content, not matter what else is going on around you or what your concerns/challenges may be.
To focus on the 'NOW' IS POWERFUL & HEALING FOR MIND, BODY, & SOUL. Recommended as a highly beneficial book. Also recommended is a spiritual novel by Deborah Morrison & Arvind Singh, Nexus: A Neo Novel (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-04 01:11:02 EST)

When this book was first published I highlighted my copy in several colors, so much so that each page resembles a rainbow! I didn't post a review because there were already so many that mine didn't seem to be needed. Years later, I find that this book continues to have a profound impact on my life, as have some of his audio tapes that were available then also.
If you haven't read this book by Tolle, my advice is do so if you are at all interested. It will stand the test of time, no matter how many other books you have on this subject. If it were possible, I would offer to buy back your copy if you don't agree it is one of your favorites! Read it, and then read it again. You'll be surprised at the new insights each time. If you do not read this book you will probably die and go to hell.
[Seriously though, it was quite amazing... and if I was not so stubborn when it comes to applying truth, my life probably would have been changed. Every word rings so true that it is like a hammer is rebounding off the anvil of your brain every time you turn a page... you know it is true, you know he is right.... But there will be plenty of time next week, next year, next lifetime, to employ this stuff into your life-agenda. Right? An amazing book. And sobering. Because there is not so much time as we think, to begin living in the Now. We all live in the Now. It is the POWER of the Now, we are missing out on. I'm sorry, but this book is terrible. I wish I hadn't wasted my hard-earned money on it. I fought to just get through it so that I could write this review in good faith of having read the entire book.
My major problem with this book is Eckhart Tolle's writing style. It's obnoxious and condescending. If you believe yourself to be even remotely intelligent, you'll likely be offended by his writing style in this book. Not only that, but he jumps around so much and repeats and re-repeats himself that it's actually confusing, along with being dull and repetitive. In my opinion, this book was crafted by taking most of it's ideas from Zen Buddhism and turning them into pop-psychology love-yourself nonsense with some buzzwords thrown in. A reader would be much better served by buying an introductory book to Zen Buddhism. Of note, I also found his description of women during their "menses" extremely offensive, and his attempt to sound non-homophobic after repeated references to the "completeness" of the man-woman relationship came off as completely insincere. If Oprah feels this nonsense helps her, that's wonderful, but it certainly only left me with an empty feeling in my wallet. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-29 01:09:53 EST)

"The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle was recommended by one of my doctors. I had a rough time really getting into it until half-way through the book. BUT I always complete a book that I start and was very happy I did. At first I felt like the author was repeating the same thing over and over. Then I realized it was necessary in order to get my mind in the correct mind-set. From then on I couldn't put the book down, wanting to see what new thoughts would come next. I found many wonderful ideas to help me live a more wonderful life. On completion I immediately ordered Mr. Tolle's newest book, "A New Earth" and am learning and enjoying it equally.

I was whining to my new dentist (and I don't even know him!) and he suggested this book; said he felt the way I did before he read it. Then I bought the 2nd book, then I watched Eckhart (see how familiar you get with him?) on Oprah's webcasts...thank goodness for his insight and presentation. You may have been chasing these "answers" for many, many years as I had been, or you may be new to this enlightenment stuff. No matter; just get the book, you won't regret it. Neither will your dentist.

I rather liked the Question and Answer format of the book. It provided a good transition to further explain some of the concepts. But I was disappointed that the practical application was lacking. If I can't use these concepts everyday, and know how to apply them in specific situations, they aren't very helpful. One example is "All you need to do is end the delusion of time." Huh? How do you incorporate this in your day to day activities? And don't forget to pick up your kids at school at 3:30 and file your tax return by April 15th, whenever that might be in this delusional world.

This book is an example of how we need to be told over and over and over again the same thing before we actually make a change and implement it into our lives. I personally appreciate the repetitive approach and that is how Mr. Tolle has ultimately achieved such mega-success. I plan on putting his plans into practice and I appreciate his teachings on a very profound level.

This was the best book ever, to create a new way of thinking and to help you change your life toward the positive. I also have read the New Earth and took the online course and together they are a wonderful way of putting a new slant on life that at 62 I had never thought of before. I am now staying in the NOW, and it feels so good to let go of all the past garbage, and not to worry about the future that is not here yet. Thank you Eckhart Tolle for this refreshing new look at life.

One often reads in spiritual works that a teacher will appear when the student is ready. I like to say that there is nothing that can be written that has not already been applied to paper, parchment, or stone. When the individual is ready he or she will be lead to the version that will resonate with them. That's why some love this book and others don't.
I find the writing a bit tedious and redundant, but it does drive home the message about living in the now. That may or may not be a spiritual truth but it is definitely a psychological one. That's why there is so much hate in the world; people can't or won't let go of the past, and their drive to bring about their idea of a bright future clashes with the contrary desires of other egoic individuals and groups I rated the book a four because moving people to think about their mind-body thoughts and the resultant thought forms, the good and the bad, is a giant step toward personal and collective improvement and maybe even to enlightenment. As I wrote in my novel, Standup Comedian: The Secret and Beyond "If your dogma craps on your brotherhood you need to housebreak your religion." i have mixed emotions about this product.
i love the message, but i am not crazy about the messenger. excellent teachings and advice. the problem is they got the author to read it. maybe they should have gone with an actor or a singer. the author's voice is an annoying monotone and it has little to no projection to it. this makes it difficult to understand what he is saying and i have to crank my cd player up and often rewind to listen to parts i couldn't understand the first time through. this can be annoying and disrupts any continuity in listening.again-i love the message, but perhaps this item is best if dealt with in a book format. And it is now. Many scholars and theologians have proposed that it was actually five to seven minutes ago, with some going so far as claiming it to have been last Tuesday. Still others say that it will be in the next few minutes, with Dr. Chuck Woolery being the strongest voice in the "two and two" school. But Eckhart deftly melds the seminal works of Van Hagar and Jesus Jones, into the definitive survey "Now That's What I Call Music" and produces an ironclad defense of immediacy. Do these alternate viewpoints still have a leg to stand on? Not now!

Like every other philosophical or religious book, this has a few pearls of wisdom. But, like most books, you need to separate the wheat from the chaff.
I do find it interesting that after he claims that he "attained enlightenment" by realizing the illusory nature of the mind (and ego). Yet he then had enough mindfulness (and ego) to change his birth name from "Ulrich Tolle" to "Eckhart Tolle". Why? To invoke the mysticism of Meister Eckhart (one of his favorite authors)? As a marketing ploy? A successful marketing ploy, it turns out. This incident is avoided in the book, but biographies on the author mention otherwise. Anyway, the first five chapters were very good, practically an exposition of a single verse of the Bhagavad-gita: "For one who has conquered his own mind, his mind is the best of friends; but for one who has failed to do so, his very mind acts as the worst of enemies." (Bhagavad-gita, Chapter 6, verse 6). After the fifth chapter, though, this book goes way downhill: although the author keeps hammering in the point that "we are not our mind", he then says and stresses that "we are our body" (page 116). This is backwards thinking. I'm happy that others have found this book to be useful. It may have some truth in it, but it is not the whole truth. I just hope people understand that. A friend was really excited about this book and asked for my opinion. Here is my response.
I wish Eckhart would just leave Jesus out of his book because he is only using Jesus, incorrectly, to support his own ideas. This may also be true for his quotes from Buddha. However I am no authority there to give an opinion. Piously Eckhart states, "When I quote from the ancient religions or other teachings, it is to reveal their deeper meaning and thereby restore their transformative power - particularly for those readers who are followers of these religions or teachings. I say to them: there is no need to go elsewhere for the truth. Let me show you how to go more deeply into what you already have." (Now, p. 9-10) Since when does Eckhart Tolle have sole insight into truth! Eckhart's god is Now (He wants us to always focus on Now and our self.) Then he goes on to say that we are god. This is ego to the max! And I thought he was trying to go beyond the ego and to stop allowing himself to be controlled by it. Whatever we choose to focus our energies and thoughts on IS our god. Eckhart is encouraging us to think of ourselves as "I am" (Now, p. 127-128). If you know the Old Testament, God revealed Himself to the Israelites as the great "I AM." This was to tell them that He was self-existing and could not be compared to anything else. During Christ's crucifixion trial he said "I am" in response to one of the Pharisees questions. For this he was condemned because the Pharisees well knew that in saying "I am" Christ was equating Himself with God. Eckhart is dangerously suggesting that we are "I am." This was Satan's error too: to want to be equal with God. Here are quotes from Tolle's writings in which he claims that we are god: "...what was left was my true nature as the ever-present I am" (Now, p. 5) "Yet you are still there - the divine presence that you are" (Now, p. 196) "The word God is limiting ... because it implies an entity other than you. God is Being itself, not a being. There can be no subject-object relationship here, no duality, no you and God" (Now, p. 224) "The way of the cross... forces you to become as nothing, to become as God - because God, too, is no-thing" (Now, p. 225) Eckhart's books are all about "me," and how "I" am to free myself. For someone who is trying to escape from "egoic delusion"(Now p. 200), he is very hung up on himself! It might be very enlightening to count the number of times he uses the word "you" and "I" in his book! His books are all about you. As he says in The New Earth, "This book is about you." (New Earth, p. 6) He also states that "It can only awaken those who are ready." This is a very egotistical statement to make. He's saying, "I'm awakened. And if you don't get what I'm talking about, then you aren't part of this inner circle of special people." Here is the quote from The New Earth: "This book is about you. It will change your state of consciousness or it will be meaningless. It can only awaken those who are ready. Not everyone is ready yet, but many are, and with each person who awakens, the momentum in the collective consciousness grows, and it becomes easier for others. If you don't know what awakening means, read on. Only by awakening can you know the true meaning of the word" (New Earth, p. 6) Tolle refers to the Bible and the teachings of Jesus without ever quoting the exact words or giving a reference. All the times he does this, he is misinterpreting the Bible. It is as though he has something to say and then looks through the Bible to support his own thoughts. He does not understand the Bible at all. He twists its meaning to serve his own purposes. Why does he even bother to mention Jesus? Is he trying to give his readers the impression that Christianity and Buddha and New Age are all one big family? Eckhart writes, "When I occasionally quote the words of Jesus or the Buddha, ... I do so ... to draw your attention to the fact that in essence there is and always has been only one spiritual teaching, although it comes in many forms" (Now, p. 9). It has been said that those people who say all religions are the same and all paths lead to God have never actually followed any path themselves. Steve Turner in "Creed" writes "We believe that all religions are basically the same - At least the one that we read was. They all believe in love and goodness. They only differ on matters of creation, Sin, heaven, hell, God, and salvation." Here are some specific examples of misinterpreted Scripture: Eckhart writes, "You take a journey into the Unmanifested every night when you enter the phase of deep dreamless sleep. You merge with the Source. You draw from it the vital energy that sustains you for a while when you return to the manifested, the world of separate forms. This energy is much more vital than food: `Man does not live by bread alone.'" (Now, p. 132). Here Eckhart is quoting from Matthew 4:4: "Man does not live by bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." Eckhart misses the last part of the quote which tells exactly what is meant by the first part! Eckhart is saying that the "vital energy" is what sustains us, not God's Word. Eckhart writes, "You `get' there by realizing that you are there already. You find God the moment you realize that you don't need to seek God. So there is no only way to salvation: Any condition can be used, but no particular condition is needed. However, there is only one point of access: Now. There can be no salvation away from this moment," (Now, p. 147). In the Bible, John 14:6, Jesus says, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father (God) except through me." There is only one way to salvation, through Jesus Christ. And the Bible says that you do need to seek God. In Jeremiah 29:13, God says, "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart." Eckhart writes, "The Unmanifested does not liberate you until you enter it consciously. That's why Jesus did not say: the truth will make you free, but rather: `You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.' This is not a conceptual truth. It is the truth of eternal life beyond form, which is known directly or not at all," (Now, p. 133). This is a quote from John 8:31-32 which actually reads: "To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, `If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.'" And a little further in the same passage, John 8:36 says, "So if the son sets you free, you are free indeed." The "son" here refers to Jesus himself, not an unmanifested being. Jesus is equating Himself with truth. Eckhart's books clearly lay out a dangerous philosophy that is very enticing to a self-centered world. Eckhart wants to do away with the past and future. If there only is "now" our faculties have become like an animal which considers neither the past nor the future. The truth is that the past is a valuable teacher and the future is our hope. God has given us the gift of knowing the past and looking forward to the future. The problem for us is that we do not trust God. As a result we worry about things that we have no control over. This is what Eckhart is trying to achieve by centering in the "now." However, he is misguided. The solution for worry is not denial, but trust in God. The main page of Eckhart's website has a quote: "The world can only change from within." This contravenes Christian teaching. The power to change for the better is not within us, it is from God. To say that we, ourselves, can by our own determination and strength, change the world for the better, denies the power of God and pretends that we are gods ourselves. We are not the ones to change ourselves. A better quote would be, "The world will only change when people's hearts are changed by God." (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-19 00:49:10 EST)

I've read hundreds and hundreds of books and Eckhart Tolle's "The Power of Now" is probably the best I have read yet. It speaks to the person in you, the parent in you, and the friend in you. It is simple yet deep in it's message. This is the best investment you'll make this year. You may end up buying several to share with friends it's so great. It will change the way you view things forever...

Are you looking for instant enlightenment? Or a quick way to awaken your spiritual life? How about a new method like spinning on your head while saying the mantra "Hubba, Hubba?"
Well you won't find any of those weird short-cuts in this book. You might find them in an unsually beautiful spiritual book Nexus: A Neo Novel about people at a spiritual retreat reminiscent of Findhorn that I just read. What "The Power of Now" does offer is stirring, evocative writing that is a call to spiritual growth through meditative awareness of the present moment. Tolle rightfully contends that our difficulties start when our mind strays from the NOW and grazes in the guilty pleasures of the past or the projected fantasies of the future. The past is gone and the future is yet to be created. By focusing on the present can we effectively create new dimensions in our life and shape our future destiny. This is a must book for anyone interested in spiritual thought with a distinctly Buddhist feel and universal in its appeal. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-19 00:49:10 EST)

The information that this book provides is invaluable. Being able to grasp Tolle's concepts and awaken one's consciousness in the midst of the "madness" that exists in our world today is invaluable. Would suggest that anyone who is making the trek and attempting to WAKE UP...should be buying this book!

There is not much different in the two books. If you have already read A New Earth, don't wate your money on this because there is not much difference in the two books.
