A very lovely addition to anyones Golden Book collection. This is a timeless book, fit for every new generation!!

We bought this for our first grandson. The book was my favorite childhood book and I had each word memorized. We want our grandson to learn to "stop and smell the roses" in life and this is THE BOOK to suggest that.

But it's not my favorite. The illustrations are lovely and soft. The story, however, is a little lengthy for my taste. I owned it as a child; I own it now. Who doesn't?

This is one of those baby books we all grew up with and still remember.

The precious illustrations and repetitive refrain make it a perennial favorite! This is a great book to share with the children in your circle.

I bought this book because I had happy memories of reading little golden books when I was a child. The story is well written and the pictures are very cute. The kids love the repetitive nature of the story.
But I had some concerns after I read the story. The story shows that the puppy is rewarded for being "poky" the first four iterations of the story, and then punished the last iteration after the other puppies catch on to what he's been doing. So the message it seems to send to kids is "if you misbehave, you can get away with it by letting others take the blame and you can even get a reward if you're careful about how you do it." My 3 year old has read it many times, and I don't know if its impacted his behavior. But it just left a bad taste in my mouth.

Excellent Childrens Book. My Favorite as a child. I try to share with all my friends children.

I was an early reader. I started reading books by myself at the age of 2. The Poky Little Puppy was one of my favorite stories as a child. I must have read this book tens of times... even though I had moved on to longer, more intricate stories. The morals of the story still ring true today.
I will be purchasing a new copy of this book for my baby once s/he is born. I intend to start reading the book to the baby right away. :)

I recently revisited this little golden book, a favourite story of mine as a child, I bought it to read to my daughter.
I find it to be an odd story, about a cheeky, puppy who tricks his siblings out of their dessert two nights in a row. He get's his just desserts (excuse the pun) in the end.
Really odd, but cute story, hasn't lost it's appeal.

The whimsical way in which this beautiful book was written has been copied many times but it is still fresh as ever at each repeated reading.
The tumbling sentences perfectly describe the movements of the five little puppies and they traipse "down the road, over the bridge, across the green grass, and up the hill, one after the other." One of the original twelve Golden Books, this classic will likely never go out of print, there will most likely be a fresh hole dug under the fence EVERY morning, and all the puppies eventually get to eat dessert like Poky.

This books was one of my favorites growing up. I bought it to start my collection of books for my children in the future. I intend to buy most of the Golden Books since they are the books that I grew up reading.

cute story - we had a dog named Pokey - 15 years old who just died - this was her namesake. The adventures of this puppy are fun to follow - good illustrations, too - a classic!

I was disappointed in the quality of this book. It seems flimsy and not of the quality I remember from when I was a child. In fact, the cover isn't as wide as the book pages, so they stick out and are sure to get tattered with time. Since it was only a few bucks I might try to find another copy that is of better quality.

The Pokey Little Puppy has always been one of my favorite stories, and now my children can enjoy it, too. Little Golden Books are the BEST!

The book is a large version of the original. The drawings and story are still a hit with the pre school set. A bit overpriced.

"Now where in the world is that poky little puppy?" is the prevailing question. The persistence of this puppy can lead to two understandings of this book. One being if you break the rules, you get what you want most of the time. Two being, being pokey won't get you anywhere. The good puppies proved to their mom that they knew what was wrong and corrected it to get treats. Positive reinforcement. As a child I enjoyed this book, now that I'm grown I would rather read something else.
This book would sell more if it was updated with colorful, more realistic pictures.

I got married a couple of years ago, and my husband and I were talking about childhood books. This was always one of my favorites, however, he had never heard of it. So right away, I bought this and "The Shy Little Kitten." No collection is complete without a couple of Golden Books.

In the realm of philosophical hermeneutical research, seldom has this reviewer come across such a taughtly and vivid example as "The Pokey Little Puppy." Dealing with complex topics such as, the meaning of Truth; Good vs. Evil; and cute lil' puppies; this book represents a complex glimpse into the brilliant mind of the protagonist. Not since James Joyce's "Ulysses" has the reader been rewarded by taking the time to read and digest the crunchy goodness of this watershed book.

Originally published in 1942, this strange little story still appeals to beginning readers ready for a longer story. Colorful illustrations complement the tale of a mischievous puppy who manages to trick his siblings out of dessert two nights in a row -- can he pull off a hat trick? Maybe their mother will have omething to say about that! Personally, I think the story is goofy, but little ones enjoy it.

My beagle looks EXACTLY like Poky. I have never seen an artist's version of a more adorable dog than Poky. His adventures are always sweet and brighten up my day. I loved these books when I was about three and my mom and dad read them to me. I still love them even though I am older. I wish they were more widely available. It is REALLY important to teach kids to love and respect animals. After school every day I volunteer at an animal rescue shelter with my older brother and his girlfriend. The things I have seen and heard break my heart and bring all three of us to tears. Hopefully if more kids grow up learning about how to treat animals and reading books like this that show animals as sweet, adorable, and VERY REAL the next group of older kids and adults will not be so cruel towards our best friends, the four legged ones.
