MR. KELBY DID AN EXCELLENT LOB WITH THIS BOOK, I HAVE BEEN USING IT FOR ABOUT A MONTH. I HAVE LEARNED A LOT. VERY EASY TO FOLLOW.

HOWEVER THE QUALITY OF THE BINDING ON THE BOOK IS THE WORSE I HAVE FOUND. I OWN ABOUT 12 BOOKS ON ELEMENTS. THIS BOOK IS FALLING APART AFTER 1 MONTH. I AM NOT HARD ON BOOKS. I AM GOING TO HAVE TO TAKE THE BOOK APART AND PUT IN A LOOSE LEAF BINDER. I ALMOST THREW IT AWAY. I WILL THINK TWICE BEFORE I BUY ANOTHER ONE FROM THIS COMPANY.

I bought this manual for my 13 year old daughter, so she can get more out of her new digital camera. She and her friends used the book to manipulate photos they took and they loved it, as they found lots of new and exciting things that can be done with Elements. She found the explanations and the language used very clear and easy. I'm not sure to what 'advanced' level it takes you, but it's definitely great for learning the basics of Photoshop Elements.

Shame on you, Scott Kelby.

"The Photoshop Elements 6 Book for Digital Photographers" was cleverly timed to come to press at the same time as the release of Photoshop Elements 6 for the Mac. Since neither Mac nor Windows are mentioned in the pre-release press, like an idiot I assumed the book would cover both.

Yeah, right.

I had used PSE6 for Windows some months ago, until my XP laptop died the true death (thus giving me an excuse -- uh, opportunity! -- to switch to Mac) and was very disappointed by having to go back to version 4 on my iMac. When the previews of PSE6/Mac mentioned that Bridge CS3 would be provided instead of Organizer, I got even more excited, because I hadn't been that thrilled with Organizer to begin with and didn't see anything it could do that iPhoto couldn't do better.

Then Kelby's book arrived.

Chapter 1: The Organizer.

I had to look through the fine print in the introduction to find that -- oh yeah, there *is* a chapter about Bridge for PSE6/Mac users ... ONLINE.

Thanks. I needed to have to go download a PDF that should have been printed on the same durable paper as the rest of the book, instead of the 24# crap I have in my printer.

If I could, I'd send this book back for a refund. Unfortunately, I wrote my name on the bleeping thing before I even opened it.

A must have if you use PSE6. I have Scott's "The Digital Photography Book" volumes 1 and 2 and they are great; but don't compare with his latest book! My first impression when it arrived was 'WOW it's BIG!" 8x10 and about 1" thick with 473 pages. Every page has easy to understand step by step instructions with several screen shots and a "before and after" at the end. Well written, beautiful quality graphics and worth every penny.

Love this book. It has the answers to most of the problems you have with digital photography that you want to fix. Things like something else being in the picture that isn't supposed to be there and taking away flaws in the skin. It gives you the simple way to do these things. I've only had it for 2 days and I've already learned a couple of things I'll use over and over. It even tells you the setting that you need to use as defaults on Elements. The other book I bought with this one "Photoshop Elements 6 the missing manual" is good also but it's so huge. This one goes into more detail on do this and do that. Love it!

(Hide Review...)  The Good, Bad, and the Ugly
Reviewer Permalink
Photoshop Elements 5 by Scott Kelby has some great features. First let me say I have only gotten to the third chapter before Amazon asked for a review. The "Good" is that this book is very easy to follow. Mr. Kelby has laid out the instructions so a first timer can easy follow them. Not only that, but he has created a web site where you can download the examples he uses in the book. This is fantastic and much appreciated touch! You do the corrections just as he does and learn by doing. The "Bad" is that it took me an hour to figure out how to download into "Elements" (my fault?...maybe I am 66 and may be slow on details).
The ugly is that some moves are either not explained in enough detail or Adobe has released several versions of Elements 5 w/ very small changes which don't correspond to the book.
What you really want to know, would I recommend this book? YES WHOLEHEARTEDLY!!!

Reviewer Permalink
I just got the new publication for Elements 6 and am more than disappointed that there's nothing on Layers. They say, "[Layers is] already in every other Elements book out there." I don't HAVE every other Elements book; this is the ONLY Elements book I have and I bought it mostly because Layers are so mysterious to me and, I think, one of the most difficult parts of Photoshop to learn to use. I'm new to Photoshop and counted on this book to teach me everything. What a disappointment.

(Hide Review...)  Perfect Straightforward Photoshop Book!
Reviewer Permalink
This book is so great. It's straightforward. It doesn't go into general Photoshop ideas - it's about specific things you want to do to your photos. It says "Sharpening" and has several things to do to sharpen your photos. Each method has clear and to the point directions. The author adds his two cents saying which method usually works better and other such things. The best part is that it's straightforward and easy to flip to any page if you want something done specifically - you don't have to go looking through paragraphs and paragraphs to find what you want. This method is great because you may flip through the book and find something new you may not have searched for or thought about before. It's great :)

Reviewer Permalink
I am a complete beginner with Photoshop and purchased Elements 5 several months ago, loaded it and was lost. Based on the reviews, I ordered this book and over a couple of days I was amazed at how I could impact my photographs. I have a long way to go but my primary goal was to remove unwanted objects from my pics and this alone was worth the price of the book.

I prefer actual practice style of learning and Kelby's approach works for me. I loved being able to read a direction, implement on my photo and see the results. I also like that each chapter is stand alone and you can learn a specific technique without reading everything that came before. I think even a beginner can get started with PSE5 using this book and develop skills as they go. I am really glad I ordered the book.

I am pleased with the purchase of this book. I find it very informative regarding the features of Photoshop Elements. I am enjoying learning how to use Elements by following along with the book's instructions. I like the presentation of the photographs that depict the progress made in the editing of the photographs. Also, the before and after photographs help to drive home exactly what the lesson is all about. Thanks to this book, I feel that I have much more control over the look of my photographs and I have achieved this in a short time. Having said that, I must also state that I am far from done with this book. I look forward to learning a lot more about editing digital photographs. This book was recommended on the Adobe web site and I agree with Adobe. I recommend it to those who want to get the most out of Photoshop Elements.

Thankfully Scott Kelby sticked to his highly successful and proven style -instead of showing you what the program can do he simply teaches you how to do things you need to do using the program.

If you are a beginner or a beginner-intermediate user - this is exactly what you need. Personally, I don't need explanations what layers are in Photoshop - just tell me how to fix my photos (step-by-step, with every step shown as a diagram, and the whole thing described in easy-to-understand, fun tone.)

In summary, beginners - rejoice, this is what you were looking for all along!

The book is actually pretty good. I was disappointed in the chapter on raw. I am new to this software and processing in raw format. What the book shows and my version 5 is completely different. I sent an email asking if they could explain the features since it is so different. I listed each, they said "I believe that Camera Raw was updated after the publication of our book." Also they informed me that they don't have a help desk. I have seen publications print corrections etc. that you are able to obtain. If raw is unimportant get it, if you want to learn about raw get something else.

I've always used Microsoft Digital Image Pro, but found Photoshop Elements on clearance one day and decided to buy it. However, I kept going back to Digital Image Pro until I ordered this book. I am constantly referring to this book and slowly I've started to memorize the steps of my most favorite techniques. I've since upgraded to Photoshop CS2 and I still use this book. I either refer to the Table of Contents or the index to find what I'm looking for. The directions are listed step by step and are easy to understand. What I find very helpful are the "screen prints" of Elements so you can actually see what the author is referring to.

Some of my favorite tips are how to whiten teeth, how to change the color of an object, and how to change the background. There are many, many more tips in this book that I use often and love - these are a just a few examples.

I bought this book on the recommendation of my daughter because I wasn't happy with photoshop Elements 5 and was still using photoshop 7.0. The reason for this was that I never could seem to get Elements to do the things I wanted and I already knew photoshop 7 inside and out.
After buying and reading this book I found that Elements 5 was very powerfull and it is now my main software package for working images. I thank the author for this because the book is so well written and eay to follow that anyone can learn the tools and techniques needed to turn out professional looking images.
The author takes every tool or technique and explains it in detail so that it is easy to follow. Once you perform the task on several images it becomes automatic when you need to use it on another image. The book is the best one period I have tried that explains photoshop image editing and is well worth the price.

Absolutely a perfect job. NO BS just a great and entertaining text all based on HOW YOU DO IT, NOT WHAT YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DO OR ANY THEORY -- ITS ALL NUTS AND BOLTS, it focuses on getting the job done. Great sense of humor, and paced just the way you want it -- your own speed. It covers a tough subject with ease and comfort. He understands his readers --students who don't want a lecture, they want a lesson.Best software book I've read in 20 years --a must if you want more than a dust collector on your shelf. Somehow the theory, etc. just sink in. You don't know how great it is until you sit back and can say not "just look at what I learned", but "look at what I can do"!

I purchased this book because I know "NOTHING" about the Elements 5 program which I had recently purchased. I glanced through several books but when I saw this one, it was right to the point, didn't have a lot of info that I wasn't interested in (like how to shoot a perfect exposure, etc.) I just wanted to know how to use Elements 5.

I have been able to get started and have tried several of the lessons and they work! The only reason I gave it a 4-star is because there are still "simple" things I don't understand and haven't found the answer as of yet! Like when I am in the Full Edit mode and want to go back to the place that has all my photos - how do I get there?

I'm sure as I try out the different lessons, I will find it! This books is still the easiest one I've seen yet - so, don't hesitate to buy it if you too are a beginner!

I just bought Photoshop Elements 5 to go along with a new Olympus 510 DSLR camera. There are so many capabilities in the software that I would not even know where to start, especially as I am not an accomplished photographer. The book empasizes the tasks you will typically want to do with the software and then shows you how to do it in easy steps. It gives you ideas on what you can do, and then shows you how to do it.
