| The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday: Making Navy SEALs | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
The essence of the toughest military training in the world, known as Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL or BUD/S for short, is captured in this handsome, large-format book of award-winning photography. From grueling predawn conditioning runs to six-mile ocean swims, Richard Schoenberg documents every daunting step in one BUD/S class's journey toward becoming professional warriors. Along the way, his incisive photographic essay elucidates the physical and mental struggles of the men who seekand often failto join the ranks of Navy SEALs.
Every aspect of the BUD/S experience is presented, including training in frigid ocean water, lifting 205-pound logs, and surviving underwater without oxygen. Through the faces of SEAL hopefuls, each picture gives insights into this unique proving ground. Like the training itself, the photographs, all in color and most full-page, are more than the sum of their parts. Taken together, they paint a textured picture of BUD/S training and document the transformation of successful SEAL candidates from student to warrior. Such an intimate look at the oft-talked about, but seldom documented, world of the U.S. Navy's most elite fighters is rarely seen. |

Great illustration of BUDS. Whenever I need to get fired up, I dust this one off and go for it.

Now this is one book I proudly display on my coffee table (keep those beers away!). Chronicling a class through BUD/S indoc, hell week, and beyond (a mere fraction of the training potential SEALS must endure before their first op), every photograph in this massive book is interesting and sometimes shocking. I sat down and flipped through it in one setting and was exhausted afterwards. Navy SEAL's are absolute studs and any man who can make it through BUD/S was blessed with godlike MENTAL toughness and gets my respect. Anybody thinking of volunteering for BUD/S should look here first. Hooyah!

Fantastic book; and excellent read, extremely accurate.
I recommend this literature to anyone interested in the REAL DEAL about the Navy SEAL. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-06-22 18:32:48 EST)

Let's face it, we don't have a clue - not unless we've been there. Most of the pictures we see, the stories in the press, they only tell half of it, if at all.
We don't know what it takes to want to be one, a Navy SEAL, not really. And we don't have the slightest idea what hardships these men have to go through to be able to be called one, in the end. I needed stories and pictures for research I'm doing on a manuscript. I found a handful of great books on the Navy SEALs and Special Forces, but photographs - and I mean those that tell a story - they were hard to come by - which of course is logical. These guys don't wait around for someone to snap their picture. Then I found this. It's huge in every sense of the word. Richard D. Schoenberg sure knows what he's doing. Not only do you get tons of pages with just about anything you would want to know about Navy SEAL training. Richard won the trust of these young men so his portraits show you a depth that is hard to find, most certainly during the harshest training conditions imaginable. Sure, in the end we still don't really know what it's like cause we have not been there but with this we get as close as we can get. If you're interested in Navy SEAL training, this book should be in your hands and on your shelf. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-01-24 18:02:09 EST)

I would recommend this book to anyone seriously wanting to get an idea of what it takes to become a Navy SEAL. This photo essay chronicles the journey of an actual BUD/s class from start to finish. While I have read other accounts, the pictorial evidence really clarifies some of what happens and why so many would-be SEALs drop out during the process. Only the most determined and mentally tough make it through these lengthy, grueling tests of strength and character. These men have my respect and my admiration.

Bravo to Richard for his hard work and dedication to the SEAL/SOF community. I was an instructor in BUDS during the making of Richards book and couldnt have asked for a more genuinely interested person to be around us. Richard has the unique ability of photographing his subjects in the most intimate situations, all while maintaining unshakeable rapport with instructors and students alike. Richard has given a much needed inside look (without going too far) at what these men go through during training. Hats off to Richard for a first class photo journal. BH

This book is absolutely great for anyone aspiring to be a Navy SEAL, or if you're just interested in the SEAL community in general. There are over 100 pages of pictures with captions that will immerse you in this mentally and physically demanding course. You'll not only see, but learn the effort, heart, self-motivation, mental/physical strength, and sacrifice men of this caliber will go through to stand among the best. HOOYAH!!!

I must admit I am a bit biased. My son was in Buds class 246 which is the subject of the book. It gave me a real life insight into what BUDs is really all about. I had a difficult time finding the book a local books stores and really appreciated the fact that Amazon carried it. Some hard to find dealers wanted as much as $120.00 for a used copy of it.

This oversized pictorial book describes the training conducted at BUD/S in pretty good detail. In my opinion the photographer, did a fairly decent job with the capture methods used to entail the rigorous training involved in the six month training program.

First of all, it's HUGE and BOLD! ... not wimpy on presentation. Very interesting narrative you don't normally see in photographer's projects; you can really follow these soldiers through their intriguing training process and their "becoming".
