I purchased the Scrabble Dictionary for both of my kids as we are avid players and my old dictionary was not capturing 'today' words.
My kids are 21 and 31 and they were both happy to receive their very own dictionary.
thanks! The price was great too!

Having received numerous calls from my daughter in Colorado to settle disputes in on-going Scrabble games (mother: the all-wise source), I bought her a copy of the Scrabble Dictionary. She now enjoys peaceful Scrabble games with her family and can save her calls to Mom for chatty conversations about her adventurous daily life.

This is a great dictionary for weirdoes like me who enjoy increasing their vocabulary at the cost of their sanity. On the minus side, it's insufferably light on definitions. An example is "PATAGIAL---pertaining to a patagium." O-kayyyy! On the plus side, it is absolutely filled with odd nouns, inflected verb forms, antiquated spellings, and just plain old everyday words. THE OFFICIAL SCRABBLE PLAYERS DICTIONARY is a must if you have six random consonants and two "I"s. Ichthyic.

While it's nice to have an "official" book around when playing, I've always found that any agreed-upon dictionary works just as well--if not better. Also it's a pain to carry a book around, so I'd rather just define the "official" dictionary with whatever dictionary is handy. And now with the internet, it's just as easy to check an online dictionary.

Then again I play scrabble purely for amusement. Perhaps more hardcore players have valid reasons for needing an "official" Scrabble dictionary.

I ordered this book to take on vacation in June. The whole family will be together and we like to play scrabble. I didn't want to take the huge webster's dictionary so this one looked small and just what we need. I haven't used it as yet in a game, but I have looked through it and I think it will help us when someone is stumped and needs a little word.

This book is very handy, however we're looking for a different one. I do agree with the person who said that there are so many odd words that almost anything goes. I was a librarian and there were some words that I was convinced were not real "words" - Agentry for example! In other dictinaries they aren't listed but they are in this book. We bought the paperback version - not the large print. That was a mistake because it's very small print and it takes forever to find a word. However, we're big scrabble fans and use it often but since finding the word agentry we may throw it away. If you have great eyesight and like the strange words, then it's a good buy. However, I would recommend the hardback or the large print paperback.

The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary is a must have item for Scrabble players of all levels. For years, my husband's family argued over which words were acceptable during their Scrabble games- they usually resorted to a standard dictionary which inevitably left someone feeling cheated. The Offical Scrabble Dictionary ends all arguments! It is also useful for discovering new words (especially those that start with 'Z'). The Scrabble Dictionary is a book that should sit on the shelf beside any and all editions of the Scrabble board game.

It isn't useful outside of Scrabble, but it is an interesting read if you like to discover new, strange words.

I have always kept a current copy of this book around. Especially since getting Super Scrabble with double the tiles and spaces. The only thing that gets me is since the third edition, the book has been edited "to remove the offensive words". Now I can understand the common "four letter words" being removed, but what about words like "redneck" which is pretty common among southerners and is NEVER edited from television? I hope for the 5th edition they reconsider adding some of the edited content back.

(Hide Review...)  A Scrabble Essential
Reviewer Permalink
This dictionary is an essential reference for any serious or even frequent Scrabble player.

The biggest advantage of this particular dictionary is that it standardizes what is acceptable when playing. Anyone who has ever played without an agreement on what constitutes the acceptable words knows that there are far too many dictionaries out there to easily agree upon one without an official version such as this.

That being said, it is not a dictionary that one can use to get definitions of words. Many times it will only define one usage of a word even when there are others as its purpose is really just to list what is acceptable in Scrabble play.

It is invaluable in terms of listing words that a regular Scrabble player needs to know such as two letter words, 'Q' words that don't require a 'U', etc.

One who is a frequent player will probably want to supplement this by getting a list of two letter words from the National Scrabble Association. That is definitely a good idea as it would be very difficult to be a very competent player without knowing all of those.

This dictionary does list countless words that a player may need in different situations such as qat, suq, zyzzyva, etc.

It also contains all of the latest words that a hard core player will need including such two letter essentials as qi, ki, oi, and fe. The fourth edition also includes many words that have become commonplace in recent years such as spam, email, blog, latte, etc.

This is clearly the best word judging book for non tournament Scrabble players (There is a different book for club and tournament players that also contains offensive words. This is the family version). It is an essential.

This book is just what I hoped it would be! For years my wife and I have been using an OLD small 5" X 7" 1/2" thick (thin!) dog-eared, pages falling out, out of print wonderful book of Scrabble-acceptable words. Though it listed 30,000 some words, there were no definitions, most plural forms weren't shown, and overall it was just out of date (probably 35 years old, at least!). This wonderful tome has settled a number of discussions already, and we have only had it a couple of weeks. I purchased the large print edition just to make looking up any words easier, but I realized a secondary advantage. Being larger than the pocketbook edition will allow for a longer life because I won't be tempted to break the back of the book to read parts of it! Actually, I bought two editions; my mother is getting one for Christmas, and she's in her mid 80's! Whenever we visit word games like Scrabble, Upwards, Boggle and the like cause many a controversy over spelling and word usage. This will definitely help to keep the peace. The layout of the book is easy to understand and use, has many helpful hints concerning word searching, and overall is well worth the small price we invested. Yes, I realize it does not contain all the words one might use. But then, neither am I a professional Scrabble Player. This is an excellent book for home use, and even for those playing at a little higher level. If that is the use you intend for it, backing up Dad on the homefront, or keeping Sis as the final authority, rest assured you won't be disappointed!

There's no more guessing with the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary. If it's in there, you are good to go. No more bickering resulting in combat Scrabble; no more second-guessing whether the word 'fits' the parameters of the rules - if the word you laid down in tiles is in black and white between the covers of this book, you have the points. Period. And you may be surprised at what is between the covers...it makes for great reading on the sly...

Loving the Scrabble dictionary. Now there's no more sheepish looking around for a "layman's" dictionary while playing Scrabble, and many official Scrabble words are not in the regular dictionary. And no more Scrabble squabbles! This official version puts to rest any questioning looks from across the board. Who new "qat" was a word? And having learned it prior to a recent game, "qat" helped us build the board north when it was going hopelessly south. I'm having fun learning new Q, J, X and Z words for those formerly heart-sinking moments nearing the end of the game and drawing one of them. A great gift for Scrabble lovers. Nice big print, user-friendly, easy to carry to any game. With all the interest in keeping the brain healthy and sharp as we age, learning new Scrabble words and playing games and puzzles help the brain to stay agile and functional. Who knew Scrabble and this dictionary were actually good for your health!! I will be getting another to give to a friend as a gift. You simply can't play Scrabble without it!

I'm sorry, but Qwerty is NOT a word. Neither is "Herstory" or a good number of other stoopid werds in this aggravating book that - unfortunately - somehow got isself endorsed by Scrabble officials. The definitions are slim and in many cases, nonexistent. I thought Scrabble was supposed to be played in English? well, there's lots of foreign words in here too. "Barneys"?!?! That's a name. Furthermore, we've been playing Super Scrabble (twice the scores, twice the tiles, and twice the time - but BIG fun), and another aggravating "feature" is that this book does not contain any words longer than 8 characters - so you can fuggeddabout adding onto "Further" to make "Furthermore" - cause its not in here! This book gives me an Incredulity (11 letters - not in there!) socre of 75% and an Aggravation (also 11 letters - and not in there either!) score of 99%. Every time we play I want to do a Farenheit 451 on the damn thang!!!!
