I thought this is a straight forward book. It provides lots of examples but it is hard to sometimes learn from each questions (students I find keep making the same mistakes over and over).

Also, from the test maker I would like to see some more free material since they are making lots of money off of each student that takes the exam. If you are going to pay for a book, check out rocket revolution or Gruber's book for great material.

This book, obviously, is massive. I personally did not find almost anything in the whole of the book, very helpful. It is so wordy and vague at parts that it is very easy to lose interest. I highly suggest one of the test prep companies SAT books. I have ones from Kaplan and Barron's and they are much, much more helpful, and are more to the point.

At first I honestly didn't want this book AT ALL! but my parents thought that I should use it to get me prepared for the SATs. I went through it and it really helped, it told me what the questions would be like and what to expect. It was pretty useful to me but what works for me doesn't neccessarily work for everyone else.

Like all things associated with the collegeboard these days, their "Official" SAT Study Guide leaves much to be desired in a test prep book, yet because it is the only book with real SAT tests, it's really the only one I would recommend for students to use.

I've been teaching SAT prep for 20 years, and the subtle differences between the real test questions and those made up in publishers' cubicles do translate into better prep for students. The SAT is hard enough without having to suffer the fact that the practice questions you may be working on are not exactly what you will see on the real test. The research and development that the SAT does on test questions provides consistency that other publishers just can't match.

With 8 complete tests included, the Official SAT Guide provides more than enough material for aspiring students, and the tutorials in the front of the book are good enough to help most motivated kids. The weakness of the book is the lack of explanations to go with the answers. One can buy the "SAT Solutions Manual for over $20, but that really is irresponsible on the part of the publishers, or a boondoggle that isn't fair to the consumers. For heaven's sake, include the explanations... isn't hundreds of millions a year enough profit?

But that's the CollegeBoard!

I've looked over this book in detail and it is great. The best part is the practice tests.

The only problem I have with it isn't the book itself - it's the teen who I bought the book for 6 months ago & is taking the SATs in 2 months. He hasn't even cracked it. I think if there was an online Official SAT study guide - or one made for the xBox - I'd have better luck getting him to look at it. He is overwhelmed by this enormous book.

(Hide Review...)  You Need This Book
Reviewer Permalink
Everyone wanting to get into a top college needs this book. The practice tests are THE most like the actual test. If you are an average or above average student, this book may be enough to prepare you for the SAT. You will definitely find out your weaknesses and then can decide if you need additional help.

I am a Mom and have helped two daughters study for the SAT. We tried all the books: Grubers, Princeton, Barrons, McGraw-Hill, Kaplan. These books provide very good explanations and give lots of material to review, but their practice tests are not actual, old SAT tests. You need the Official SAT Study Guide and you need to give yourself enough time to do all the tests and to review all the answers you get wrong. A teacher or fellow student might be able to explain the answer because this book does an AWFUL job of explaining the answers. Most of the time there are no explanations. Nevertheless these practice tests are most like the real SAT.

If you need additional help (and we did), your local school may know of someone who gives SAT review classes. Of the other review books out there we liked the KAPLAN books best. They had excellent explanations. Please make reviewing for the SAT a priority the summer of your sophomore or junior year. Treat it like a summer school class.

If you still are not getting above a 600 on each section (above 600 is what most top colleges want to see) then focus only on your weakest section and ignore the rest. After taking the official test, identify your weakest section again and study only that and take the test again. (My daughters each took the test four times!)

The top colleges want to see scores above 600 (if possible), community service, decent GPA, challenging high school coursework, and something in your essay that suggests you are a person who will contribute to the school environment or classroom discussions.

I do not like the SAT. I think many of the questions are unfair and depend upon your experiences and NOT your abilities. But what can we do----it's required. Best wishes on your studies. I still have one more child to train for the SAT!

This book is written by the College Board the makers of the SAT so you would think it would be a great resource for all sections of the test. Unfortunately, it is not a great resource for the SAT I essay. First, they promote several misconceptions about their own test (ie all examples are weighted equally which Adam Robinson has shown to be false). Second, the high-scoring essays included as examples have very little in common with each other. Because of this it is difficult to glean a formula for writing a high-scoring essay (and there is a formula as discovered by Dr. Les Perelman of MIT). So I cannot highly recommend this book for SAT essay preparation. I give this book a mediocre rating because at least it has writing prompts from the test-maker which no other book can claim.

Everyone who is preparing for SAT or PSAT needs this book. It includes 8 test that are as close to the real SATs as possible since they are prepared by the same people. I would recommend using it after reviewing most of the math and verbal subjects as a practice book. I use it in my prep sessions as homework and quiz material as well.

One con is that the first part of the book that reviews Math/English subjects are not very useful which makes it unsuitable for being the only book to use.

The SAT examination is a test of a different character; it purports not to test a given set of skills pertaining to a specific subject, rather it claims to measure one's "readiness" for college-level work. In many aspects, this is true: learning a bunch of facts will not increase your score drastically. However, the key to success on the SAT is the knowledge of a few basic facts and a plethora of practice. This book will provide both.

The Critical Reading review section of this book is necessarily devoid of much factual review (other than your basic test taking strategies), but contains much practice. And, if you think about it, how else can you study for a reading test than by practicing?

The mathematics review section is extremely good. It has sections for arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and miscellaneous topics. Every item that can be tested makes an appearance in this book. In addition, there are plenty of problems at the end of each section review, as well as a final math practice set. Reading this section will remedy any basic math weakness.

The writing section of this book is also extremely good; It has numerous drills and real practice questions to help solidify the writing rules given. If you master the writing review section of this book, you're, in essence, guaranteed to score a 700+ on the writing section of the real exam.

Finally, the real meat-and-potatoes of this book is the set of 8 practice tests that is included. Doing all of these tests under timed conditions will dramatically raise your score as you will learn the test better as well as solidify your knowledge of the topics by putting them to use.

Do note that those of you preparing for the PSAT should also grab a copy of this book. Not only will you be prepared for the PSAT, but you'll also become prepared for the SAT. One of my students and I dramatically raised our PSAT scores with this book -- you can too.

This book will get you familiar with the format of the SAT. The SAT is basically a trick test and once you understand the questions being asked, it is quite easy. I also recommend Testmasters- Complete Solutions. That book will give you the reasoning to see why each answer in the practice test is either right or wrong. Grammatix- The Complete SAT and PSAT Strategy Guide is also one I highly recommend. Happy SATing!

Reviewer Permalink
Quite frankly, I could not get through the tediously basic review section of this book. Unless you're really struggling or have had a particularly inadequate education, skip it and get a more challenging review text, such as Barron's SAT 2400.
However, the official practice tests in this book are invaluable. As you might expect, they're by far the closest you'll get to an actual SAT. The Princeton Review's math sections tend to be disproportionately difficult, while Barron's practice tests tend to be too hard all over, and both occasionally contain some completely irrelevant questions you could bank on not seeing on the actual SAT. After taking the real thing, I found that the practice tests in this book gave me the best idea of the general difficulty and content of the test, and of what kind of score I could expect.
Bottom line: take the practice tests in this book to familiarize yourself with the content and format of the SAT, but look elsewhere for review and test strategies.

The SAT Official Guide is a great book for practicing SAT questions, it offers a little bit of all types of questions. This book is especially good for starters, but the major drawback is that it doesn't offer too much of mathematical review or strategies. I got a 1990 on the PSAT, and I thought I could do better, so I bought this book a few months before I took the SAT. I studied a little bit every day, and I think it improved my score significantly. On the SAT, I improved on every section (700 writing, 710 math, 720 critical reading). Being able to take several practice tests from this book made me much more comfortable when taking the actual tests. The only problem was the essay, on which I earned a 7 out of 12 ("partial mastery") I usually get excellent grades on essays at my high school, and I wasn't sure what went wrong. This book doesn't really help much with the essay, but most colleges don't consider it yet anyway.

This book is the filet mignon of SAT prep, but it has one drawback.

I've tutored the SAT for over two years, and have scored over 2300 twice as an adult. This title is superior to the Kaplan and Princeton Review books, because it is designed by the people who produce the SAT. This simple fact is enough to elevate it head and shoulders above the rest.

When you use the College Board book, you'll be exposed to the perfect difficulty level of questions - not too easy, not too hard. Therefore, you'll learn perfect pacing - not too fast, not too slow. And perfect feedback - not so easy that you think you're a genius, not too hard that you'll think you should go back to seventh grade. And perfect test perception - you'll see just how many "oh my god!!!" questions there are and will handle them accordingly.

The only drawback is the lack of an answer key. The College Board is much more interested in a "fair test" than in helping you out. But if you combine this book with an established, talented SAT tutor, you'll improve your score tremendously with this book.

This book is essential for preparing to take the SAT. It has test questions that are most like the actual SAT questions. The "getting started" section with pointers and recommendations is too vague to be of much use. Unless you can work with a tutor, I suggest you pair this with one of the study guides that provide a more thorough review of the concepts and types of questions on the test (preferrably one that includes an SAT vocab list). My daughter paired this with Maximum SAT, and felt well prepared for her recent first SAT sitting.

This is the best book to prepare for the SAT. I used this book and "10 Real SATs" to prepare for the SAT. The Official SAT Guide is the more useful of the two since it has practice tests that are like today's SAT but both gave me a very good feel for how the actual test turned out to be. The practice tests in this book looked and felt like the real test with both the format and difficulty very similar to the actual test. The practice tests have questions that start out being easy and get progressively more difficult, just as they do on the real test.

The only downsides to this book are:
1. Not much by way of concepts review
2. No explanations for answers to test questions
3. The practice tests give a possible score RANGE that you are likely to score (though the tests in "10 Real SATs" give you the exact score you would have scored).

However, no other test prep materials had tests as close to the real test as this book. The practice tests were just like the real test other than the experimental section which you have only on the real test.

This book is definitely worth the price just for the eight practice tests.
