The Nature of Animal Healing : The Definitive Holistic Medicine Guide to Caring for Your Dog and Cat

A pioneering revolutionary prescription
for the health and long life of your pets

For two decades, Dr. Martin Goldstein--America's most successful, renowned holistic veterinarian--has healed and helped his animal patients with the same natural therapies that benefit humans. The results have been so astounding that today critically sick pets are brought to him from across the country for a new chance at life and health.

In this compelling, very accessible book, Dr. Goldstein explains exactly what holistic medicine is and how it works. By treating the root of a health problem instead of its symptoms, you too can help your animal to regain and maintain its own health, as nature intended. Dr. Goldstein also shares many remarkable true stories of supposedly terminally ill animals who have recovered to full wellness. Inside you'll discover

- Why our animals get sick, even when we strive to give them the best of care
- An exhaustive A to Z guide of pet ailments--and the best course of action
- Why vaccines can do more harm than good
- The link between diet and disease--and how the right diet can not only prevent disease but reverse it
- How acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic, and other alternative options work--safely and painlessly--to restore true health
- Specific guidance for the use of herbs, supplements, and natural remedies
- The good news (and the bad) about cancer in animals--including extraordinary new treatments and potential cures
- Coping with the inevitable death of your pet--both physically and psychologically
And much, much more

PLUS--the ultimate resource for holistic pet care: an extensive guide to holistic product manufacturers and stores, books, newsletters, Web sites, veterinarians, and associations!
As an accomplished doctor of veterinary medicine, Martin Goldstein is well respected for his 25 years worth of experience in the field--experience he effectively utilizes in conjunction with his expertise in holistic medicine in his new book, The Nature of Animal Healing: The Path to Your Pet's Health, Happiness, and Longevity. Goldstein begins with a broad explanation of the origins of diseases in pets, then moves on to taking action against those diseases, not only offering thorough discussions of specific ailments--including cancer, allergies, and arthritis--and the holistic medicines available to help in the healing process, but also speaking to the "dubious legacy of vaccines" as well as the questionable quality of pet food. Finally, Goldstein turns his attention to the spiritual realm, addressing both the bonds that we have with our pets--and how those bonds aid in preventing and fighting our pets' health problems--as well as dealing with the death of a beloved pet. Goldstein's expert advice, inclusion of inspiring real-life cases, and thorough resource "compendium of holistic books, newsletters, Web sites, veterinarians, and associations" make this book a valuable addition to any pet owner's library. --Julia King

A real eyeopener. The chapter on vaccines was good & as stated had my dogs tested & they did not need vaccines . Its a shame the vets don't tell you a titters test is avaiable instead of over vaccinating. Start reading pet food labels in more detail even if it says its organic find out from the manufacturer if they get food from another source and if thats the case they don't have to list the chemicals in that part. A must read if you want a healthy animal.

If you are looking for more information, as I have been, this is a good book. It was very helpful. I am reading practically everything I can find regarding dog health as my 4 -year old Siberian cross just developed epilepsy. I have discovered that each book I get has an extra bit of information that I did not glean before from other books. (Good for the booksellers, right?) But seriously, it has good information! I recommend it.

Within four days of following many of the suggestions in this book, my two huge ailing dogs started smiling abundantly, staying awake more, and enjoying life again! I love knowing I am making a difference in their lives by giving them a healthier and more delicious diet. This book stays on my bedside table for frequent reference, and my friends are buying copies as well. It inspires me to be a better mama for my loving furchildren! Nan Shaw

For everyone who lives with dogs and/or cats, this is a must have book. It is comprehensive and full of invaluable information. He discusses everything from diet to cancer to vaccines. He provides rather detailed information, not just skimming the surface of the topics. He includes lots of useful sources as well. I was so excited when I got this book that I immediately ran to the store to implement some of the changes.

I am so glad I found this book! It opened my eyes to so many things that I had wondered about. Dr. Goldstein writes in such an easy manner, and though it is very informative it's also enjoyable to read. I highly recommend this book and I think every animal lover and pet owner should own a copy. I have used the reference portion in treating my pets for ailments when I couldn't get to a vet or to supplement their veterinary care. This will be a mainstay in my library.

I am still fininshing this book because I skipped the chapter that was about each individual illness that animals can get. I am going to go back through and read them later minus the cat illnesses as I don't have cats.

This book was well written although it gets a bit technical at times and I had to read some stuff 2x but it gave me a lot of insight on the damage that pet food does to dogs and for that matter what is really in pet food!

I would recommend it to anyone interested in improving thier pets life but wouldn't use it as my only resource I have bought several books to see what is in each of them and learn as much as I can mainly so my dogs can have a healthier lives and so I can be informed when talking to my vets who are very conventional.

The book is written by a veterinarian first trained in standard medical education. He took his education and added holistic training with experiences added by his brother who is also a veterinarian. I don't buy all the concepts presented, but it certainly gives hope to all of us who want our pets, and ourselves, to live long and high quality of life, lives.

This book is fantastic! I've gotten so many tips that have benefited my 13 year old dog. I wish I had this many years ago so I could have prevented some of the problems she is experiencing. I've already noticed a huge improvement in her health and I've only had the book for about a month.
Dr. Goldstein's approach to the health and well being of animals just makes perfect sense. I will never again feed my dog commercial dog food and I feel like an idiot for believing it was healthy for her in the first place.

If you want your dog (or cat) to live a long, healthy life, get this book!

In July of 2006 my beloved Bogey was diagnosed with TCC of the bladder. The vets that I took him to said that he probably had less than 6 months to live. I did not accept their opinions as final so I started researching alternative treatments when my mom gave me this book. After reading it I contacted Dr. Marty at his office in New york and he began treating Bogey with supplements and we changed Bogey's diet to a raw diet. Unfortunately, we lost our battle with cancer on July 7, 2007 but Bogey lived 6 months longer than any of the other vets expected him too under Dr. Marty's care. I don't believe that every treatment works for every animal but I truly believe that Dr. Marty gave me 6 extra months with my baby when other vets wrote him off. This book gives you a different perspective on pet care and it works. Bogey was living proof.

This book is more than just a "take this vitamin for this problem." He really gets you to think about wellness and nutrition as a whole and he backs up much of the information with footnotes and actual facts. This book was the final motivator for me to switch my dogs to a homecooked diet AND it finally got me & my husband on the right track with our own diets. If you want your dogs to live a good, long life without being bogged down by drugs and foods made from "rendered animals" (road kill, euthanized pets, etc) - READ THIS BOOK.

This book is extremely well put together, concise, and easy to understand. I especially liked the source guide at the end that has names of all recommended holistic veterinarians and where to buy food, etc. We all need a "reducation" on how to truly care for our beloved pets. I would recommend this book to anyone who owns a dog or cat (the book seems to be geared more to dogs). The pet food industry is poisoning and over running our televisions and supermarkets with false information to line their pockets. And unfortunately, most veterinarians are as ill-advised as we are.

I WAS LET DOWN DUE TO THE LACK OF USABLE INFORMATION. LOTS OF USELESS WORDIENESS. SOME WHAT SIMILAR TO A CHEAP NOVEL. I EXPECTED MORE. ON THE OTHER HAND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND 'HOMEOPATHIC CARE FOR CATS AND DOGS', BY ,DON HAMILTON,DVM. HIS BOOK IS WRITTEN AS A GUIDE OF INFORMATION GETTING TO THE HEART OF THE MATTER, WITH A REASONABLE OPENING TO FAMILIARIZE ONE WITH THE IDEA OF HOMEOPATHIC CARE. HE INCLUDES NAMES AND ADDRESSES AND PHONE & FAX NUMBERS OF HOMEOPATHIC SUPPLIERS HE INCLUDES THEIR WEB SITE AND E-MAIL ADDRESSES. PLEASE KNOW I HATE GIVING BAD REVIEWS BUT I ALSO HATE HAVING PEOPLE WASTE THEIR MONEY AND THIS IS DEFINITELY A WASTE.

Very practical, down to earth and easy to read...gets weird in the "channelling" at the end, but ignoring that, it will give you excellent insights AND you will never have to buy a cookbook for your dogs as he tells how he simply makes his food for his brood----no calorie info or portion size but it does not take rocket science to figure that oot. He also informs you of the bEST dog foods available as he knows not all dogs will want to switch off dog food entirely. Love the common sense.the Natural Health Bible for Dogs and Cats is a fantastic companion to go w/ this book.

From personal experience, I know Martin Goldstein is right on with feeding pets real food.

For years, my Pug struggled with crystals in her diet...both acidic and alkaline. She was put on different Hill's Prescriptive Diet foods.

She was also going blind.

Two years ago, I thought--enough of this crappy food--I want the rest of her days (at that time I thought very limited) to have more quality. I started to feed her free-range chicken and premium canned food (because I knew it was balanced.)

She's still eating it and is now a healthy, almost 14 year old Pug! (I have since added meatloaf from free-range buffalo, brown rice and grated carrots.)

I love this book. I use it frequently. I agree with all the wonderful praise in all the other reviews here. So, why do I give it only four stars? SEE THE NEXT PARAGRAPH.

A word of warning. If you're looking for a particular company or product or vet or animal-related anything in the Resource Guide, be prepared to spend a long time thumbing through twenty-eight poorly-formatted pages. The cutesy fonts are irritating. The lack of clearly defined headings is inexcusable. I finally marked every page with a heading of my own: VETS, ANIMAL COMMUNICATORS, HERBS, FOOD and so on.

Also, I found only one website listed in the entire Resource Guide (Goldstein's own, I might mention). Hopefully any further editions of this book will update the contact information.

Bottom line -- This is truly a book every dog or cat person should own and use. I believe what Marty Goldstein says. I even quote him in my books. I know my cats are healthier as a result of my using THE NATURE OF ANIMAL HEALING. Just beware the final pages.

Every pet owner should have this book in their library! Unlike most pet health books, it is an easy and enjoyable read with personal anecdotes scattered throughout. You can read about particular treatment case studies, and understand how and why the treatment worked (or in some cases, didn't). Some of Goldstein's beliefs are a little hard to swallow, but he allows for that in his writing and doesn't shove his opinions down your throat. The ailment section is extensive, telling you what a disease is, why it occurs, and how to treat it. Because he specializes in treating cancer, owners facing this disease with their pets would be well-advised to check this book out.

I purchased this book after watching Dr. Goldstein on Oprah. I was most interested in his advice on what we should be feeding our pets. In the book, he provides eye-opening information that convinced me to adjust my dog's diet. She has flourished on her new diet and is truly a "new" dog. This book also includes lots of other info. on vaccines, ailments, etc. Fortunately, I have not used those portions of the book, but if my dog were to ever get sick, I would certainly refer to the book for advice. If you are an open-minded person who is frightened by the recent pet food revelations and is interested in alternative health methods, I would certainly recommend this book to you.

I was expecting a lot from this book after the reviews I read and it exceeded my expectations. I'm only half way through but already it was worth every penny! From vaccinations to your pets diet Dr. Marty goes over everything you can do to keep your pet healthy. I am a research associate for a large pharmaceutical company so of course I was under the impression that synthetic drugs help the body in the healing process. After reading this book I have been converted to the other side of the spectrum. Dr. Marty's manner of explaining holistic healing is not only authoritative and convincing but also easy to understand. Just last week my 4 year old miniature dachshund got into my vacation bag and ate some TUMS and Advil. I of course took her to her vet for a blood test to make sure she was ok but instead of giving her the conventional medicine that the vet prescribed I used methods that Dr. Marty outlines in his book along with supplements that he recommends and my dog is doing just fine after ingesting what her vet called a "lethal dose" of ibuprofen.
I think that anyone who reads this book will come away with at least one easy change they can make to help their pet live longer!

Reviewer Permalink
This is a book that drips with compassion, page by page, chapter by chapter. If you own a pet or are thinking about getting one, this is not merely recommended. It is required reading in my opinion. Once in awhile, we come across an individual, who has risen above his peers and made quantam strides in a field, but yet has no ego about it. Such a person does so, I believe, because it is their goal to achieve the product, and not so much the reward of their labors. Dr. Goldstein is one of these rare individuals who has risen to greatness treating animals with the purpose of increasing their health and quality of life rather than merely treating them in methods that the veterinary industry, as a group, has evolved. His practice is holistic in the sense that he uses what works. And that does include some conventional veterinary methods. It's all about what's best for the pet.

In reading this book, you will encounter case histories of Dr. Goldstein's, what he did, what he learned. You discover how he became a holistic vet, having practiced conventionally for a number of years. He was interested in treating animals and improving their lives. Compassion.

Dr. Goldstein has a lot to say about diet. And it makes sense that this one point is such a vital element to an animal's life. The chapter titles says it all: "It All Starts with Food." I could never understand how vets prescribe a diet for cats with renal problems that is so low in protein when a cat's natural diet is diametrically opposite. While it makes sense to not stress the kidneys, removing protein is not necessarily the best approach. Especially when cancer is so prevalent and cancer thrives on carbohydrate diets.

And Dr. Goldstein introduces invaluable information about vaccines. The link between vaccines and ailments, including cancers, is now well-known among many vets that your vet today may well ask if your cat is indoor or outdoor to determine if Fluffy really needs all the vaccinnes. Compelling information is provided that our pets are grossly over-vaccinated to the point where the vaccines are introducing more problems than they are solving. Don't count on your local vet to know all of these details. As pet owners, it is really our responsibility to have the final say on what is put into our animal's body.

An entire chapter is devoted to cancer. This has become a disease that your pet may well develop if treated conventionally with vet-recommended diets and annual vaccinations. It is what Dr. Goldstein sees daily. His brother's pioneering work with cryosurgery is part of the regimen that Dr. Goldstein's clinic uses to this day to remove or kill tumors. It is far less costly without the nasty side-effects of radiation and chemotherapy.

Finally, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the more spiritual aspects of the book, which includes a chapter on the spiritual nature of animals and the death of a pet. Our friends don't live forever, unfortunately. This part of the book touched on something I experienced that I had previously believed was merely my imagination, yet it was something other pet owners experienced after the death of a pet. It made sense.

As I mentioned at the outset, this book just plain drips with compassion throughout. You can't help but feel it, see it and understand it.

I like this book. Dr. Goldstein writes not only informatively, but interestingly and with compassion, too, and includes examples from his practice. I bought his book as a reference but have read the entire thing, some parts more than once.

The chapter on vaccinations alone is worth the price. It is a real eye opener, a "must read".

We have 4 cats and no dogs, but even so I found the information on dogs helpful and interesting, too.

This is a wonderful pet health book and a great introduction to holistic pet care (or holistic medicine in general). My mother is a nurse, and I've always had pretty healthy eating habits and have taken care of myself. However for some reason it never occurred to me to apply that idea to my dog until I started hearing about feeding fresh food to dogs. I started researching about pet health since my dog had his tumor removed, and I wanted to keep him as healthy as much as possible in his old age. This book and its assertions about how to keep your pet healthy through diet and natural healing methods are unconventional, mind-blowing, and yet, so completely sensible that you wonder how people who love animals could have been duped to slowly kill their pets by feeding them waste materials of the food industry, supressing their natural warning systems (i.e. illness/alergy symptoms), and poisoning by way of conventional medicine. How could we have ever believed that "table scraps" (i.e. real food) is bad for our pets? It makes you wonder about your own health, too. Having read this book, I am more confident that I'm doing the right thing by my dog, and his eagerness at every meal (cooked weekly by me) is proof enough.

Last year I went through a cat with Cancer, another cat with Kidneys stones, another cat with a abcessed tooth and a dog a ear infection. After $3000 in vet bills and little help from conventional treatmeats, I wanted to give Holistic medicine a try. This book has opened me up to a new way thinking and been a life saver to my animals. The book is greatly detailed about natural feeding, supplements, dangers of vaccines and flea meds etc.. Also lots of info on Herbs and natural remedies. Useing the Herbs listed in the book my male cat has had no more stones in over 2 years and they are all thriving all natural foods, flax seed oil and supplements. I have also learned to go more natural with all household cleaners etc., keeping us all safer from toxic dangers we use everyday. Thank you Martin Goldstein for this excellent book, I wish you practiced in my area. I also recommend "Dr Pitcairn's New Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats" by Richard H. Pitcairn, both books have been very helpful to me..

If you can only afford one book to help guide you to a healthier dog & cat this is it. This is without a doubt the best book on the market for improving the health of your dog or cat through improving the food you put into their bodies and thus improving their health and their immune system. Just like people... you are what you eat and so it is with our pets.

Dr. Martin Goldstein has been treating animals by improving their food and with natural supplements for many years and has seen amazing results. After using his methods I saw results in just weeks with my pets. I believe his methods have saved the life of one of my pets who was ill with Cushings Disease.

This book has quickly become my Bible. I buy multiple copies and give them to friends. You will wish you had found this book much sooner!

This is the best book you could ever buy for your dog. I have two copies of this book, one for my office and one for home. I recommend it for anyone who owns a dog. Marty Goldstein is an outstanding vet. I have had the pleasure of meeting him myself. I wish I can say that it was for a book signing, but my dog had bladder stones and I brought my dog to him, hoping to avoid surgery. My baby is currently under his care.

excellent book for learning more about your pets and their nutrition and how to help them be healthy w/o a lot of allopathic intervention which sometimes does more to hurt than to help.
