I am a ten year veteran advisor, and I enjoyed the book very much. Confirmation of numbers to attain and suggestions for how to get there where very good. The additional resources in the appendix where extremely helpful. One can get distracted and complicate our business more than it should be. I found Mullen's format and suggestions easy to get through, and great reminders in how one can stay on the path to a very successful career.

I usually do not comment on books. However, on this one I must. David Mullen, who I do NOT know, cuts directly to the chase. He tells you exactly what you should do and what you should expect on the road to building a Million Dollar Financial Services Practice. I'm only two or three chapters into this book; however, I can tell you it is, without a doubt, exactaly what I needed. It let's you know what to expect: high rejection, which will lead to high reward. I see why many highly educated people fail at becoming successful FAs, they can't get through the rejection phase (I'm smart, articulate, double degreed and you want do business with me - NO). I looking forward to getting as many NOs and will not as possible. Because I now know that's the only way to get to the major yes. Thank you David Mullen. Again, if you're new in financial services this book is a must read BEFORE you commit. If you read this and fail, I feel it would be because you do not follow the basic tenents of this book. This book will be a prominate resourse in my library.

(Hide Review...)  I must have read a different book!
Reviewer Permalink
I must not have read the same book as the other reviewers or I did not work with Mr. Mullen. I ordered this book looking for great things after reading the other reviews. I was sadly disaapointed. This book could be summmed up on one page.

The what: have 20 years to chase people with at least $250,000 to invest in modern portfolio theory. The How: You accomplish this by contacting 100 prospects (people you have met and would be open to meeting with you again) at least twice a month. Once via a phone call, letter or email. Once via a drop by in person. Raise at least $120 million with an ROA of .8% and you have a $1 million dollar practice. His scripts are very different than the ones on his website and the 15 marketing plans are a joke. For example, Mr. Mullen states that 52% of the millionaires in the US are business owners and he spends 5 pages on a marketing plan with three of the pages scripts. Where is the detailed step by step plan.

Great promise, not much substance.

Save your money and DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!!! I would be curious why Mr. Mullen is retired and why Merrill Lynch would let him if he has worked and produced so many great advisors.

(Hide Review...)  Best book for Financial Advisors in building their practice
Reviewer Permalink
I have read many books for financial advisors to build their practice. Dave Mullen in this book has distilled the important activities that each should do from new advisors to the business and experienced advisors who still desire to grow their business. This is by far the best book I have read in this area.

The best way to read this book is to skim the book to find the areas of interest for yourself. Then, reread specific sections and think of the activities that you will do. He does give you many ideas - it would be impossible to do all of them.

I would highly recommend any new advisor to the business to read this book. I would also encourage managers to read this book also since it will help them to give advice to their new advisors. Wholesalers who sell to advisors should read this also since they from time to time give advisors some ideas of getting business.

Dave Mullen has done a great job with this book and I look forward to his next book.

Having purchased and read most books on Amazon relating the building a wealth management business; (not HOW to advise clients) but really books on prospecting, generating leads, strategies on getting in front of clients - this is the best book on the subject.

Most books on 'high net worth selling' or 'rainmaking' are a waste of money in general. Authors who have not been in the trenches and on the frontlines trying to build wealth management books of clients have no business writing on how to sell investments - so majority of books sold on Amazon automatically fall out of the loop.

This book is obviously written by someone who has done what they are preaching and it is completely evident from the material.

Not a magic bullet, nowhere near close, but excellent explanation of what is required AND marketing opportunties that can be used to go out there and generate clients.

Reviewer Permalink
I have been in the financial services business for 25 years and have seen a lot of "Grow a Big Practice Fast" systems. This is book the best. It lays out a great template that most anyone can follow step by step to build a solid book of business. It is a reminder of the basics but also has a number of "Think BIG" type of processes and tools. I have recommended it to all the brokers in my division and most have had very good results. This is not a quick fix, but it is a template of fundamental best practices. Buy the book. Implement the system.

(Hide Review...)  Mullen cuts to the heart of the matter on how to become a top producer in a million-dollar financial services practice
Reviewer Permalink
I met David Mullen several years ago in his Merrill Lynch office in south Denver. A colleague and I visited with David for a couple of hours and enjoyed lunch and a enlightening conversation about Mullin's views and support strategies he was implementing for and with the financial advisors under his charge. I smiled as I read through this book hearing many of the same practices and methodologies he shared with me then. This book is about proven system. Mullen has helped hundreds of financial advisors become successful and achieve the pinnacles of their careers.

Anyone who is new to the financial services business, or is thinking about switching to a career in financial services would do well to read David J. Mullen Jr.'s very helpful handbook on how to become a top producer in a million-dollar financial services practice. As a former regional manager with Merrill Lynch, Mullen gained experience working with several top producers and summarized what he learned from them in this book. As a managing director at Merrill Lynch, Mullen hired and trained more than 500 financial advisers.

Mullen cuts to the heart of the matter by spelling out in detail what needs to be done every business day to achieve success. On top of the list are self-discipline and clarity of vision. After providing an overview in chapter one, Mullen takes the reader step by step along the path of developing a million-dollar practice. Most of the advice is very specific - how many qualified prospects you should keep, how much in new assets you should get under your management each month, and how many appointments you should make for each new week. And, throughout the book, Mullen stresses that there are no shortcuts in the road to success but there are clear right steps to take and each step must be taken.

Besides being very specific, the author also takes a global, comprehensive approach when covering such broad topics as sales, prospecting, marketing, and time management. The broader looks produces his system that offers "how to" advice on such things as getting the appointment, converting prospects to customers, balancing current customers with prospects, building relationships, retaining customers, using niche marketing to your benefit, increasing the services each customers depends upon you for, and attracting millionaire clients.

Mullen also provides sample letters and model scripts that are proven templates to success. The sample letters and scripts are why many of my friends are keeping Mullen's book on their desktops to be referred to often. Especially useful for repeated reference is the his15 Market Action Plans. The templates alone provide reason to buy this book but the real benefits are those gained from paying attention to the advice of a man who has succeeded and wants you to succeed also.

Reviewer Permalink
Just recently licensed, I was searching for a book to help me get started, since I will be working as an independent financial adviser. Ordered this book because of the high reviews and I have to say this book did not let me down. It was better than I expected. This book breaks down exactly what you need to do, step by step, to grow a million dollar practice. My favorite chapters were the first (Overview) and the third (The numbers you need to succeed).

The Overview basically tells you what to expect, explaining that as a new adviser 70% of a 10 hour day should be spent on marketing. Also provides a break down for your weekly marketing goals, time commitment, and target markets.

The Numbers chapter breaks down how many appointments you must set weekly, how much assets you must get under management on a monthly basis, the minimum qualified prospects to keep, and a specific road map to growing your business to a million dollars.

The book also contains marking plans, scrips to help you get started and much more. This is a great book for any new adviser that is serious about growing their business to a million dollar practice!

This is a very good, practical guide, on how to become a million dollar producer. The book is straightforward and full of practical information that anyone can immediately put to use.

The author is a former regional manager at Merrill Lynch and refined his system over many years of working with top producers at the firm. New advisors and those looking for a significant jump in productivity would be well advised to adopt the book as their business plan.

I use the book and have worked with draft copies of the materials for two years and have seen a significant lift in my productivity, client satisfaction and my own professional satisfaction.

The book has info on how to structure your practice, what activities matter, managing investments, niche marketing, working with your assistant and much more.

This is a great companion to Nick Murray's classic book "The New Financial Advisor"

As I begin my own financial services practice I find this book to be very helpful in two areas.

1. The author gets at motivation first. We need to ask the WHY of what we are doing. We need to answer that question in our own lives if we are to be successful. Set goals and then work to achieve those goals. It begins with the reasons we are in this business.

2. Practical steps. The author takes the reader through very practical steps of time management, and even lays out some very basic marketing plans and ideas.

This is a marked up book that will be a constant reference for me.

David Mullen's main theme is a variation of Thomas Edison's oft-repeated words that "genius is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration." Although his book is repetitive and circular, he adds a little more information each time he loops back to an idea. Aspiring brokers will find the effort of following Mullen's train of thought worthwhile: He provides scripts and sample letters, and describes helpful techniques for handling rejection, communicating with prospects and closing sales. He includes information about how to work in teams and how to train sales associates. Mullen's advice is not groundbreaking, but it is specific and practical - although, strangely, he never mentions the importance of developing investment expertise. Thus, getAbstract recommends this book to those who already understand the field and want to use what they know to start selling.

Dave Mullen Jr. has put together the essential steps to success in the EXTREMELY difficult process of building a financial services practice. I am one of his disciples and the concept of clearly defining your market action plans, understanding that it takes 100 clients that are constantly being upgraded and 100 prospects that are constantly in your pipeline is the key to success.

Reading the book is step one, consulting directly with Dave Mullen should be your next step. Bravo for a process that works if you are willing to commit!

Dave Mullen's book is tremendously value added, and is a must read for financial service professionals serious about growing or improving their practice. Dave provides practical advice in granular detail about what it takes to achieve an extraordinary level of success in our highly competitive industry. He provides an excellent blueprint or roadmap for achieving one's goals. If an advisor follows the formula that Dave outlines in his book, success will absolutely be achieved. Dave's message and method can be helpful to those just starting in the business, as well as those with significant experience who are already considered successful by any measure. Most books of this type are simply motivational in nature and filled with platitudes that we have all heard before. Dave provides a specific formula for success. I wish that this invaluable resource had been available earlier in my career!

As a new financial planner working on an independent platform, I was seeking help to develop a marketing plan to get my business ramped up as quickly as possible. This book exceeded my expectations. Dave shares what your goals should be depending on what stage in the business you are, then proceeds to explain how to go about achieving them. I appreciate that he spends little time covering motivation, other than to recognize that to work as hard as one needs to build a million dollar practice, you've got to have your own deep motivation to do the marketing required. The most value is in the "how to" go to market which sets this book apart for most others.

My only regret is that the book was not published prior to my start date. If you are new to the financial services business or looking to make a career change, this is a must read book. If you are a seasoned pro, but not a million dollar producer and want to break through to the next level, this book will be of great assistance.
