The Lupus Book: A Guide For Patients And Their Families

Lupus, a disease of the immune system, can be quite deadly, claiming the lives of thousands of patients yearly. Dr. Daniel J. Wallace is one of the world's leading authorities on this disorder, an eminent clinician who has treated over 2000 lupus patients, the largest such practice in America. His The Lupus Book, originally published in 1995, immediately established itself as the most readable and helpful book on the disease. Now Dr. Wallace has once again completely revised The Lupus Book, incorporating a wealth of new information. This Third Edition discusses the newest breakthroughs in drug treatments and alternative therapies as well as updated information on the immune system--all laid out in user-friendly language that any patient could understand. Readers will discover new blood tests and new drugs introduced since the last edition, an extensive table of herbs that can be used for the disorder, and a large section on cognitive therapy and biofeedback. And as in past editions, the book provides absolutely lucid answers to such questions as: What causes lupus? How and where is the body affected? Can a woman with lupus have a baby? And how can one manage this disease? There is also a glossary of terms and an appendix of lupus resource materials compiled by the Lupus Foundation of America. Over a million Americans have lupus and some tens of thousands of patients die every year from the disease. The Third Edition of The Lupus Book offers these patients and their families a wealth of reliable, up-to-date information that will help them manage the disease and live a happier life. DT Endorsed by the Lupus Foundation of America DT A portion of the proceeds goes to Lupus research

I bought this b/c I thought a relative had lupus. While she does not, I am still keeping the book b/c it is a wealth of information on all types of arthritic diseases, the origins of the disease, symptoms, various treatments and what to expect from the treatments. I am keeping this as a great medical reference book !

And trust me, I've read them all. The only thing is - if you have ZERO background whatsoever on this disease, or in science in general, don't start with this book. Instead, start with one of the more general, introductory books like "living with lupus" or "lupus q and a" to just get a background because this is one heavy-duty book, laden with science that is very thorough, comprehensive, and sometimes complicated. It's amazing though, and a must-read. I'm VERY happy this exists.

I have been struggling with autoimmune diseases with them potentially evolving into Lupus. This book has been helping me get through some really tough times. It also has helped to be able to talk to doctors with a clearer understanding of this disorder. I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and this book along with Dr. Wallace's fibromyalgia book have really put things in perspective for me. I have read many books on the subject and this book by far is the best!

This is the book whether you are a patient, a family memeber, or just trying to figure out if you might have Lupus! I've had multiple life-threatening manifestations of Lupus over the past 10+ years and I always go back to this book for answers. I have yet to read anything that comes close to covering all the bases...and since there are SOOOO many bases to cover with Lupus, start here. More than likely the it's the only book you'll need. I bought many other books but this is the one I always reference first, and I usually don't need to look further.

I have Lupus, and have bought each new edition of the book as it has come out. It's the best book on Lupus out there. Now I have also been diagnosed with MS, if only I could find a book about MS that was as concise, organized and well written as this one, I wouldn't feel nearly as "alone" in the land of MS as I do.

Thank you Dr. Wallace for such a great book that helped me navigate the uncertain road of being newly diagnosed with Lupus 15 years ago, and for the continued information you provide to all of us who have or are affected by Lupus.

The Lupus Book provides current information by a noted expert on the illness of lupus. I personally use this book as an "encyclopedia" whenever info is needed in my journey with lupus. It has been a comfort to be able to reach for answers to my most immediate questions. Of course it doesn't replace my physician, but it rests at my bedside ready to offer info at any time of the day or night. An invaluable resource.

This is one THE best books I have ever read about Lupus. As a Lupus sufferer, it is important to know aspects of this illnesses. This book goes from the diagnostic phaze to the definition of and the treatment of Lupus. It is very detailed and concise in its approach. Doctor Wallace must be one heck of a rheumatologist because he took very complex subject matter and made it coherent for the average American. This book is filled with information on various treatments for Lupus, a prolifera of testing procedures and an explanation of co exsisting autoimmune diseases.

Any individual with Lupus, their families, physicians and social workers should have this truly well constructed text!

This book is one of the best out there on Lupus. Mr. Wallace disects the disease into many parts because Lupus had many frustrating facets to it. After reading this book, I am going to talk to my doctor who does not think that I have Lupus, because I don't fit neatly into a box. I can't wait to tell this doctor that my last blood test showed the anitphospholipid levels were extremely high. I noticed it, he didn't. Thank you Mr. Wallace for naming the symptoms, and the cause of it. My "gut feeling" was right.

If you wish to know about what is actually going on in your body with this disease, this is the book for you. Many other books about Lupus teach you how to live with the disease and that's good. But I wanted to know in detail what the heck was going on in my body, what to watch for, what drugs and treatments I might try and how they would affect me. This book covers all that in detail. This book might be a bit too technical for some, but I didn't have any trouble understanding it. Rhuematologists are few and far between, and really good ones are even harder to find. The author of this book is very knowledgeable and experienced. It's good to have "him" by my side, to supplement my own local Rhuematologist as I continue this journey.

I have seen more than my fair share of Lupus books in 30 years. When I was first diagnosed it was thought that Lupus was terminal ... now it is chronic. It is still w/us day after day after day. I used to think if Lupus didn't put me out of my misery, reading about it would probably give me a stroke. However I have a very, campassionate Doctor who has been on this journey w/me the entire time and the support of family and friends. But the Lupus Book by Dr. Daniel Wallace is fabulous. I wish I would have had it many, many years ago. Now, we have a friend whose son is really suffering from Lupus. I gave him and his son and their family a copy of the book. Their praise of this book is awesome. It is very simply laid-out, easy to read, and so imformative. Thank you so very much, Dr. Wallace

As a newly diagnosed Lupus patient, I am eager to learn more about this hard to diagnose and currenty incurable disease. While I have an excellent rheumatologist, he could not provide the detailed answers I sought. And I now realize that I didn't know enough to even ask the right questions!

I read several other books on Lupus before reading this one. None of them provide the detailed information to be found in this book. I am the type of person who needs to know the details - but if your not - the book is organized so you can bypass the more detailed explanations.

After reading this book, I can now ask my doctor more intelligent and meaningful questions - letting me re-gain some control over my life - and how I live the rest of my life with Lupus.

I was diagnosised with Lupus 27 yrs ago at age 17. Since then, I have literally seen 100's of Drs, most of whom were, to be kind, not very knowledgeble about SLE. This book has been instrumental in getting me the care and treatment that I need. I take it with me to nearly all Drs appointments and have given copies of it to Drs who need the information that it contains to competently treat my illness.

If you're looking for a factual, well written and easy to understand book about Lupus, to either read yourself or to give to family and friends, this is the book you've been looking for.

I had been suffering more than 6 years w/almost 30 different doctors all with different misdiagnosises and no relief when I met Dr. Hallegua who is Dr. Wallace's partner. In a week I had the blessing of a lupus diagnosis, a Dr who cared and meds that made a world of difference. I highly recomend their books to sufferers of lupus as well as their friends and family. They are the best in their feild, passionate in their work, and if you are not lucky enough to be their patient you can still be lucky enough to read their wise words.great aid in educating loved ones

I was recently diagnosed with lupus and bought this book to try to help me understand what it was I would be facing. If you or someone in your family has this disease, this book will help you understand. I highly recommend having it as a reference.

It does tend toward medical-ese (as opposed to some other "how to live your life" books that are more geared toward the common denominator), so it may take a while to grasp some of the information.

But, it provides a very good overview of what to expect from all the medical tests and symptoms you can expect with the disease.
