(Hide Review...)  Don't Tour London Without It!!!
Reviewer Permalink
We could not have toured London so thoroughly without this guide. It was VERY helpful & we had it out all the time. Small enough to carry in you bag. It is full of great information with easy to see large maps of the city broken down by neighborhoods. This is not really a review guide but an informative guide. It has information that you need to know, hours of operation, overview of what the attraction consists of, locations on maps, etc.

I also purchased the AtoZ but found it had too much detail & was much larger, not as easy to carry around. I think it would work better for someone living or staying in London for an extended period. For the average tourist just wanting to see the main parts of the city, this is perfect.

I highly recommend you don't go to London without this guide, great price for such a wealth of information.

I repeat: Do not go to London without this map!

The BEST guide book that I spent my money on. I am not a city girl, so I relied on this map heavily during my trip. I would have been lost without it. Every street and site is clearly listed on this map. Excellent!

I had a previous edition of this book that I used repeatedly until it was out of date. This edition is just as great. I love that major stores, hotels, etc. are listed. Also this is about the only map I can find with bus lines.

(Hide Review...)  Great guide... choose this over Streetwise
Reviewer Permalink
This is an excellent map for getting to know London, as it says in many of the other reviews. The main reason I'm writing is that I was on the fence between getting this guide or the Streetwise maps for a recent trip. I ended up getting this mapguide for London and the one for Paris, but we used Streetwise for Barcelona, and I definitely found that the map books are far superior.
The books show a level of detail that Streetwise can't match. We walked all over London and never found so much as an alley that wasn't on the map, whereas it was often hard to locate streets on the Barcelona map (I realize this may reflect a difference in the cities, but no one ever called London an easily navigable grid). Also, this mapguide can be folded and put in a front pocket, and it's small enough that you can read it on the street without looking like the quintessential tourist. You pretty much have to unfold the whole Streetwise any time you want to use it and since it's laminated it can't really fit in your pocket.
I can see where some people had problems switching between pages on the maps, but I found this pretty easy - it definitely helps to spend a little time studying the overall city map in the book before setting out. This mapbook does have a small London guide section and we actually found some good recommendations in it, but it won't replace a full size guide book for planning a trip.
All in all I loved using this mapguide, and I still look fondly at the dogeared copy I brought back. It's not that Streetwise maps are horrible, but if you have the choice, I'd bring the book.

(Hide Review...)  The one with the best advice
Reviewer Permalink
We brought several maps and guides for our first trip to visit London museums and top tourist sights. The London Mapguide was the easiest to use, had the clearest maps, and the most useful advice. We especially appreciated the suggestion to travel to Greenwich on the River Themes.

Although other guides had more detail, this actually made them harder and slower to use.

(Hide Review...)  Inconspicuous and handy, but best used in conjunction w/a fold-out map
Reviewer Permalink
The inconspicuousness of having a small booklet to consult when I got lost in London made this mapguide a great buy for me. As at least one other reviewer has noted, however, this map's strength -- its detailed subsections of central London -- is also a weakness because you lose the bigger picture of where the neighborhoods are in relation to one another. Granted, there ARE arrows at the edges of the maps showing the page numbers for where you can find a map of the areas north, south, east, and west of the area you're looking at; but you still don't get the at-a-glance sense of the city you can find by looking at larger maps. And that's important to me. Especially because that bigger picture helped me realize that a lot of places to which I might have been tempted to take the Tube were actually within walking distance.

So although many users evidently found this mapguide useful enough on its own, I definitely got a stronger sense of the layout of central London by using this otherwise great mapguide with the London A-Z fold-out map of central London.*

A few other things of note. First, do remember that this mapguide covers only central London. It's true that there's a page that covers Hampstead. But if you want to venture away from central London, you'll need another map. Second, although this guide does devote a few pages to tourist attractions of note, it does not provide the kind of helpful info and detail that a tour guide such as Let's Go or Fodors does. If you like to plan your itinerary ahead, do not rely on this book. Third, although this book does include a system map of the Tube, the trademark colors that you see on all other Tube maps are printed funny here, esp. the Piccadilly line. Clearly, this is a minor detail, but it was noticeable.

All told, if you consider that most laminated fold-up maps with impossibly fine print run between $6 and $8, the price for this detailed and easy-to-use mapguide is quite the steal.

* Several others have mentioned the London A-Z Guides. Note that there are several versions of these maps, some at the same level of detail as the Thomas Guides by Rand McNally. If you're ordering online, make sure to note the area coverage so you don't inadvertently buy a map too detailed for your needs! Also, the fold-out map that I ended up getting had bus routes on it, which was great. Someone mentioned that there were bus routes in the mapguide, but if there were, I didn't see them, and I pored over many of the pages during my six weeks in London.

As a frequent traveler to London, this is the only mapguide I use. I never go to London without it. I have the A to Z and find it way too detailed to easily read on the go (and the print is way too small!) This mapguide is clear, easy to read and just detailed enough to get you where you want to go. I have two older versions and am buying this newer version today because my old one is getting very worn. Love this mapguide.

Cumulatively, I've spent several weeks in London strictly as a tourist, and I've used this guide exclusively. In terms of guide books, this is about as lightweight and inconspicuous as they come; however, be warned that it does not include information pertaining to hostels/hotels or eateries (if you are looking for that kind of information, the more cumbersome Lonely Planet guide might serve you better.) This guide includes short histories of various sections of London, as well brief descriptions of each museum/point of interest listed in the book. While I've found the maps to be wholly accurate and easily navigable, there are some errors in the index (Courtauld Institute Galleries and the National Portrait Gallery, for example) that have hopefully been corrected in the latest edition. I would also advise everyone to double-check the opening/closing times of their destinations for seasonal changes or publishing errors before finalizing their itinerary. Enjoy your trip!

This is a fantastic book. It's not just a map of the London area, but much more than that. It has places of interest, small descriptions, even restaurants. You can easily get by with just this book in London. I used it not only to get around the main streets, but also off the beaten path areas and it was dead on accurate.

In fact this book is so good, that a lost tourist on the underground offered me money for it!

I bought this sight unseen based on the positive reviews here. When I got it, I thought, "Is this the right book? What were those people talking about??" And I also had some cynical thoughts that I'll withhold.

I kind of get a headache looking at this guide. It's got too many words running in all directions, the text is all different sizes, there are too many colors....it just isn't calming to look at.

Isn't that just because there's lot of streets in London? Well I was at the bookstore and looked at the Knopf mapguide, and it's much better. I don't think it omits any information; it just presents the same thing in a cleaner way. This pamphlet of maps is busy and unreadable.

The images from the "search inside" don't actually show the map. I've scanned and uploaded one of my own. I think to some extent the scanned image speaks for itself, but I don't think it captures the degree of busy-ness of the mapguide. The difference between how I feel looking at this book versus the one I saw in the bookstore is enormous. I am thinking of going back to get it, even though it's redundant.

I bought this along with several other guides for London and England. This is the one I took with me everyday. It is small enough to pack inside a handbag and has plenty of useful information. The maps themselves are terrific - they are large enough to be easy to read and they got me out of multiple jams when I got turned around after getting off the tube. If I ever go back, I will definitely carry this one along again.

I recently returned from 5 days in London - no tour group, no guides, and no prior knowledge of the city. Not wanting to carry around a large guidebook, I took this mapguide with me each day. It was absolutely essential! Everything from restaurants to tube stops is well-labeled and easy to decipher. It fit right into the side pocket of my small, over the shoulder purse and was easily tucked away when I didn't need it. I love to "get lost" in the small side streets and when I did need to find my way back to the main roads, it was simple to see where I was. Quite frankly, this was as essential to my trip as my passport! Don't leave home without it!

Excellent choice for our first trip to Central London. I pondered over ordering the A-Z guide that was recommended...or this one. This choice was better for me. It is a good guide to the tourist areas of London and the best plus is that the map is fairly easy to read...it has the largest print of most guide books I've seen! Some of the other maps type was just too small to read. This book is very compact, as well, which made it easy to store in my purse.

The London Mapguide is the one map I always bring with me to London. Certainly the A to Zed is more comprehensive - but also much more difficult to read when you're on the go. The Mapguide has all the streets, attractions, and points of interest the London traveller could want plus useful info like post offices, tube stations, bus routes, some common shops and hotels. It's not too big to lug around, easy to read, and even has a page on the outlying village of Hampstead. Highly recommended.

I had 3 books and a map with me in London recently, but this proved to be the one that was most useful, whether making plans in my hotel room, or travelling the streets and Underground. It had the best and most convenient maps of streets and the Underground, plus useful (and accurate) information about museums and tourist spots. We were able to visit several lesser known (but fascinating) sites because I had read about them in this Mapguide. I was even able to give directions to some Brits who were looking for a particular mansion.

I carried it everywhere (it is thin & fits in a coat pocket) and used it constantly. It is so much more convenient and readable than large fold-out maps, yet has all the necessary street and site information.

I studied at the London School of Economics, and I undertook a serious effort to become familiar with London prior to arriving. The Mapguide is useful but there are many additional maps that are free and, in my opinion, superior to the Mapguide. In fact, I found the "The London Guide" maps, provided free from the city, to be the most useful.

However, four stars are warranted. The London Mapguide is particularly useful is you want to become very familiar with certain sections of London. That is, the Mapguide provides enlarged sections of the city which can be very useful, especially if you are interested in walking tours.

Many of the maps I had used for London did not include many of the small streets. The Mapguide certainly does include them, which enchances its utility. The Mapguide provided the most thorough map of London I had used.

In conclusion, I do recommend the Mapguide if you are interested in or require a great deal of information on certain sections of the city. Nevertheless, I would not exclusively use the Mapguide if you are visiting London for recreation, business, etc. Further, the Mapguide also includes information on many attractions in London.

I hope the above is helpful.

I ended up buying a London "A to Z" map book when I was in London. They sell them at almost any bookstore. The A to Z map guide was so much better and much more comprehensive. I even got a pocket A to Z. That was the most useful thing I purchased on my whole trip!

I bought The London Mapguide at the last minute, and only because another map I'd tried to order was sold out. Talk about serendipity! This guide is excellent and so easy to use- seemingly every street, alley, thoroughfare is listed in the book's index, so you just look up whatever it is that you need and turn to the correct page. Everything is well marked and simple to understand, and the book makes it easy to navigate around London with confidence and a sense of just where you are in the city. The book-style format is also excellent, as you don't have to stand in the middle of the sidewalk unfolding some behemouth monster the size of your living room carpet. Musuems and the like are all listed in the front of the book with brief descriptions and their respective page numbers. Grab this and a copy of a thorough city guide (I liked the Lonely Planet one) and you'll be set.

So, I strongly recommend this mapguide if you are headed to London. It is an investment well made!

I've spent a year in England and have made >30 visits all together.

Here are my reviews of the best guides....to meet you r exact needs.....I hope these are helpful and that you have a great visit! I always gauge the quality of my visit by how much I remember a year later......this review is designed to help you get the guide that will be sure YOU remember your trip many years into the future. Travel Safe and enjoy yourself to the max!

Fodor's
Fodor's is the best selling guide among Americans. They have a bewildering array of different guides. Here's which is what:
The Gold Guide is the main book with good reviews of everything and lots of tours, walks, and just about everything else you could think of. It's not called the Gold guide for nothing though....it assumes you have money and are willing to spend it.
SeeIt! is a concise guide that extracts the most popular items from the Gold Guide
PocketGuide is designed for a quick first visit
UpCLOSE for independent travel that is cheap and well thought out
CityPack is a plastic pocket map with some guide information
Exploring is for cultural interests, lots of photos and designed to supplement the Gold guide

MapGuide
MapGuide is very easy to use and has the best location information for pubs, hotels, tourist attractions, museums, churches etc. that they manage to keep fairly up to date. It's great for teaching you how to use the underground and the double decker buses. The text sections are quick overviews, not reviews, but the strong suite here is brevity, not depth. I strongly recommend this for your first few times learning your way around the classic tourist sites and experiences. MapGuide is excellent as long as you are staying pretty much in the city centre. When you get to be an old London hand, remember that the classic Londoners guide will always be an A to Z (zed) map and guide. If you want to go a bit beyond the central core of the city (perhaps to Windsor, Hampton, or further away) you really need the proper AtoZ to be able to find exact routes and streets.

Time Out
The Time Out guides are very good. Easy reading, short reviews of restaurants, hotels, and other sites, with good public transport maps that go beyond the city centre. Many people who buy more than one guidebook end up liking this one best!

Blue Guides
Without doubt, the best of the walks guides.... the Blue Guide has been around since 1918 and has extremely well designed walks with lots of unique little side stops to hit on just about any interest you have. If you want to pick up the feel of the city, this is the best book to do that for you. This is one that you end up packing on your 10th trip, by which time it is well worn.

Michelin
Famous for their quality reviews, the Red Michelin Guides are for hotels & Restaurants, the Green Michelin Guides are for main tourist destinations. However, the English language Green guide is the one most people use and it has now been supplemented with hotel and restaurant information. These are the serious review guides as the famous Michelin ratings are issued via these books.

Let's Go
Let's Go is a great guide series that specializes in the niche interest details that turn a trip into a great and memorable experience. Started by and for college students, these guides are famous for the details provided by people who used the book the previous year. They continue to focus on providing a great experience inexpensively. If you want to know about the top restaurants, this is not for you (use Fodor's or Michelin). Let's Go does have a bewildering array of different guides though. Here's which is what:
Budget Guide is the main guide with incredibly detailed information and reviews on everything you can think of.
City Guide is just as intense but restricted to the single city.
PocketGuide is even smaller and features condensed information
MapGuide's are very good maps with public transportation and some other information (like museum hours, etc.)

Lonely Planet
Lonely Planet has City and Out To Eat Guides. They are all about the experience so they focus on doing, being, getting there, and this means they have the best detailed information, including both inexpensive and really spectacular restaurants and hotels, out-of-the-way places, weird things to see and do, the list is endless.

This is the best eight bucks I spent in preparation for my trip to London. These maps are thorough, clear, and up to date. You can tell the wide roads from the narrow roads, and the tiniest streets are included. When you travel off the map, the page on which your route continues is clearly marked. And while each page is just a tiny section of the city, the layout of the book keeps it all in context. Theaters, hotels, pubs, Underground stops, and other handy locales are even marked (by name!) on the maps.

One of my traveling companions carried a guidebook around and kept referring to its inferior, confusing maps. If I had relied on that, I would probably have ended up in Finland, scratching my head and looking for the train. This book is worth buying just for the confidence you gain just by knowing where you're going, not to mention the arguments avoided and time saved.

I found this map book extremely helpful on my recent stay in London, particularly the information on bus routes. I would never have had the courage to take buses, and I am glad the book gave me the info I needed to do so without fear of getting lost. The tube may be quick, but there is nothing like sitting in the front topside of a double-decker bus to really see London!

I found the dimensions of the book somewhat awkward, and I kept wishing it was skinny enough to stick in my back pocket, since I wasn't carrying a bag. As is, I was always having to hold it, and therefore afraid of losing it.

But all in all, you couldn't ask for more information, or a clearer map of an often confusing city.

Recommended.

I'm old and my vision is not what it used to be. The Mapguides maps are actually big enough to read without being segmented into more pieces than a jigsaw puzzle. The Eyewitness guides are very good. I especially like the walking tours, but with a bit of research, you can litter the pages of the Mapguide with enough notes to roll your own tour.

i spent hours and hours at amazon looking for the "best" books when i found out i was finally going to get the opportunity to travel to england. this is by far the best book!!!! it's very thin and you'll need it to get around! the first thing i'm going to do when traveling to another place is check to see if their is a mapguide book! i felt so much safer being able to see where i'm at and glance around on the map to figure out where i want to go next! it's a must...please don't hesitate to buy it!

The guide has gone with me on 7 trips to London over 10 years and I have notes in all the margins. I love it since I don't have to stand on a street corner with a map spread open. It is a convenient size for a purse and it covers the cental portion of London, though very little of the outlying districts. It doesn't go north of the Angel underground stop to the North, Harrod's to the west, or Putney to the southwest, and hasn't been updated to include the Tate Modern or the Globe on the Southwark side of the river. I am now forced to buy another mapguide, but really wish Penguin would put out another copy of this handy little book.

The London Mapguide was indispensable during our recent trip to the city. Each page's map is jam-packed with information: sites, museums, post offices, parks, hospitals, churches, and even select pubs, restaurants and clubs. Aesthetics are important to me, and I can vouch that this guide is very well put-together, colorful and easy to read. Also, the book handily has pages at the beginning and end with plenty of info about museums and other sites, including hours of operation, their map location pages, pricing, etc. as well as emergency numbers, service info important to tourists, a large Underground map (yes, the famous one) and a fairly comprehensive index of street names.

The most unexpected benefit of the guide was how handy it was for figuring out the public transportation system. We bus-hopped all over London using this guide alone, seeing much more than we would have if we had just taken the Underground. The maps very clearly illustrate all of the bus routes and Tube/railway stops and it's super easy to trace how to get from one part of the city to another, seeing as much as possible along the way.

We used this map guide so much during our stay in London that it feels like as much a memento as anything else we brought home. Just flipping through it now brings back a lot of memories. Another reviewer complains that this guide doesn't cover a very extended area, and while it is true that it doesn't include maps for the outer fringes of London, it covered a perfect area for we tourists spending a week trekking all over the city's heart. I strongly recommend this guide!

It's fine, but I don't get all the raves. It's a rather expensive map, not going much beyond central London. The textual information is limited to bare essentials you'll find in any other guide, and you'll need another one anyway. The map itself has remarkably little information, considering the scale, because streets are represented by double lines 1/8" wide, leaving little room for anything else. And check the size: my clothes don't have pockets that size.

Of several maps & guidebooks purchased, this was the book I took with me to London. It covers the entire city, shows great detail in streets and public buildings, and fit in my purse easily. Even my British London-savvy friend was consulting it.

The other books (with the exception of London for Dummies) were good for preparing for the trip, but would just have been unneccesary weight once I got there.

I've lived in London for a year, and have traveled there over 20 times in the past 15 years and I never found any London map or guide that is in the same class as this one.

Easy to read and follow, but most of all the extra identifications of pubs, hotels, tourist attractions, churches etc. make this the fantastic companion for your trip. The book format makes it much easier to find the part of London you want, but unlike a London A to Z book, this one is small enough for your purse or pocket.

Also, the brief textual sections on Museums and galleries, points of interest, entertainments etc. are invaluable. Just a quick look in this area gives you the phone number, times open and closed, and address for just about any thing you will need.

This is simply put the best, bar none, map guide book out there. Certainly an essential whenever I travel to London.

Comprehensive, detailed, easy to use, easy to reference, inexpensive. I walked London, and used the tube, confidently with this in hand for several days; and then, so well had this guide allowed me to absorb London areas and their relationships, I walked London without it!-- Bloomsbury to Fitzrovia to Soho to Covent Garden to Piccadilly to Knightsbridge (admittedly, I had to recheck the guide at the forbiddingly complicated Hyde Park Corner underground walkway). Use this with a good set of suggested walking itineraries-- I found Insight Pocket Guide London particularly useful, detailed, and inexpensive-- and you will make London your own.

AMAZING. Such a small book, already worth the piddly amount I paid for it and I haven't GONE to london with it yet.

It it extermly detailed, showing train sations, routes, bus routes and route numbers, underground map and stops onthe street map, shows bars, restruauntts, cinemas, theatres, cultural, churches, tourist, sites walking tours, the works.

it's a full city map - two pages at a time, I think if it were printed as a whoel page it would be a HUGE map, scale is 6" to one mile, so that should give you an idea of what kind of detail it has.

Want to see what's north of yoru page? go to the page number listed, there you go! Along that edge it shows the bus routes going to that new page - JUST AMAZING. I know I won't be able to LIVE without this map while there. Parks, monuments, cemetaries, museums - all of it.

Imagine my surpise to get it and FIND my hotel before we even get there. I mean it's LISTED on the map! Southwark Rd. at Bear Lane and Burrell! All kinds of hotel are ON the map! Right there! I'm tewo block fromthe New Globe! and 3 blocks from the OLD Globe!

BACK FROM LONDON: This book was the only book we used! We left all the others untouched in the bags at the hotel. We never left the hotel with out checking our pocket for the Mapguide. Once we got to our destination, and were not lost, just not sure which direction of the busy wide intersection to go and asked a passing local. She took one look at the guide and went "Wow, this is a great map!" and asked where we got it. She wanted one for her car!

To say this mapguide was essential would not be high enough praise. We still tell any friends we have to buy the book when they go over. We loved using it so much, and told so many folks about it, we are going to Paris we hope soon and already ordered the Paris edition just in case! Any large cities we travel to will always be hopefully with a Penguin mapguide! This is worth it's weight in gold.

This map took me around London for three weeks. It's clear and detailed, and has so much information right on the page: stores, restaurants, pubs, post offices, theatres, museums, hotels, and even statues. It includes a tube map, of course, overlaid on the streets, so you can find the stations easily. Small and thin enough so that I never went anywhere without it.

We bought a HUGE stack of guidebooks and maps for our first trip to London. This was by far the most useful of all of our purchases. The map pages were large scale showing the names of all of the small streets and alleyways. We had several other maps that just didn't show enough detail to find our way around. We used the tube map and the street map the most. The information on museums and other sights gives a short description and the important details like location, hours, whether there is a cafe, etc. Other guidebooks were more descriptive and helpful in deciding what to see (we liked Rick Steves and Frommers the best). But, once we made our itinerary decisions, we left the other guidebooks at the hotel and carried this one with us wherever we went.

I have used the earlier edition for the past 5-6 years and would't go to London without it. Even the English guides use this book. I just received the 9/5/2000 edition and it contains even more information. Now, many of the well known stores are marked as well as some of the 'must visit' pubs and restaurants. It is hard to believe that this one guide contains all the bus and underground routes, hotels, museums, theaters, shops, places of interest. If you only buy one guide to London, this should be it!

The large scale, easy to follow maps and labels make this booklet, in its convenient 5" x 7" format has served me well for several trips to London. I consider it a MUST for anyone going to this city.
