After the success of the dreary and verbose "The Bible", God (under the pen name Allah) has dished out another fantasy novel. The main characters are different, but the whole thing is really the same. Allah bosses some people around, nonbelievers should die, women suck, blah blah. To be honest, I fell asleep a few times reading this book. I always make myself finish what I'm reading, but I almost stopped to read my new copy of Balloon Farm (5 stars) about halfway through. Maybe the Qur'an fanfics will be pretty cool. I would suggest checking some of those out to get a feel for the characters and universe before purchasing this.

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

1. When the hypocrites come to thee, they say: We bear witness that thou art indeed Allah's Messenger. And Allah knows thou art indeed His Messenger. And Allah bears witness that the hypocrites are surely liars.

2. They take shelter under their oaths, thus turning (men) from Allah's way. Surely evil is that which they do.

3. That is because they believed, then disbelieved; thus their hearts are sealed, so they understand not.

4. And when thou seest them, their persons please thee; and if they speak, thou listenest to their speech. They are like pieces of wood, clad with garments. They think every cry to be against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. May Allah destroy them! How they are turned back!

5. And when it is said to them: Come, the Messenger of Allah will ask forgiveness for you, they turn away their heads and thou seest them hindering (others), and they are big with pride.

6. It is alike to them whether thou ask forgiveness for them or ask not forgiveness for them -- Allah will never forgive them. Surely Allah guides not the transgressing people.

7. They it is who say: Spend not on those who are with the Messenger of Allah that they may disperse. And Allah's are the treasures of the heavens and the earth, but the hypocrites understand not.

8. They say: If we return to Madinah, the mightier will surely drive out the meaner therefrom. And might belongs to Allah and His Messenger and the believers, but the hypocrites know not.

9. O you who believe, let not your wealth nor your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah; and whoever does that, these are the losers.

10. And spend out of that which We have given you before death comes to one of you, and he says: My Lord, why didst Thou not respite me to a near term, so that I should have given alms and been of the doers of good deeds?

11. But Allah respites not a soul, when its term comes. And Allah is Aware of what you do.

If one wants a detailed commentary of the Qur'an with matching Biblical references, here it is.

I picked up this translation of the Quran in Barnes and Nobles and I was extremely dissapointed. I have no problem with the translator being Ahmadi, as long as he is faithful to the original text. So please don't take this negative review of the translation to stem from animousity towards the Ahmadis. I have several problems with this translation. First of all, it divides the suras (chapters)of the Quran into sections, each section having a title given to it by the translator. A person who has never read the Quran in Arabic may conclude that these sections are divisions that are in the original Arabic text. They are not. The sections created by the author are problematic because the author, through each title, injects his own interpretation into the actual text of what the main lesson of this section is. Some of these titles lead readers to conclude that the Quran is intolerant of Jews, Christians and other monotheistic religions. This is not true. Instead, the author injects his own intolerance in the Quran. Another example of this is the "explanations" the author provides before each sura. The author's extreme intolerance distorts the meaning of the actual text. For example, in his introduction to the second surah, the cow, the author claims in some way or the other (I don't remember his exact words) that this surah is about how Jews are evildoers and have betrayed God. However, in the actual text, the Quran refers to these people as the children of Israel and not jews. Note the difference. The author's translation and interpretation is anti-semetic whereas the original text is not. The author's intolerance can also be seen when he attempts to explain the verses in the Quran that are tolerant to Jews and Christians. He discounts the meaning and importance of these verses by saying that this only refers to Jews and Christians that existed before the Quran was revealed, or alternatively those Jews and Christians that follow the uncorrupted versions of the Bible and the Torah. Yet the Arabic text is clearly in present tense. So his explanation does not make sense.

It is true that some commentators of the Quran aspouse to SOME (not all) of Ali's intolerant views. An example of such a commentator is Ibn Al-Kathir However, Sayyid Qutb and Allamah Tabitabi'i, who wrote two of the most extensive and notable commentaries of the Quran (they used the recommended method of explaining the Quran using the Quran) provide more pluralistic and tolerant interpretations of the verses of the Quran.

I highly recommend Yousef Ali's translation over this one. The only reason I gave it two stars instead of one is because the quality of the actual publication is good and it is very organized.

A good translation of the texts of the most evil and intolerant religions in the history of man. You have heard Islam is a religion of peace and love. It is not read the Koran. Islam is a religion that teaches Hate, Intolerance, War and Murder.
According to Islam Non believers (anyone who is not Muslum) have only three choices, 1. Conversion to Islam, 2. Subjugation (slavery) and 3. Death.
The Koran teaches Hate and intolerance on every page. Muslums are tought to hate and distrust all non-muslums. Which of course makes it absolute folly to try to engage Muslums in any kind of negotiation or contract.

This is the best translation into
English Holy Quor'an in my opinion. I bought this as a gift for a friend of mine.

This is an excellent translation of the "unholy" book of the death-cult commonly known as "Islam". In this book, you'll learn that: Jews are pigs; infidels should be beheaded; a woman's testimony in court is worth 1/4 of a man's testimony; jihad (struggle) against the infidels is mandatory, until the infidels all are either killed or converted; and much, much more!

I will preface this note by referring to the other comments here about how well researched this translation is and mention that probably about 900 of the 1300 pages of this volume are the translator's detailed explanations of exactly why he translated things the way he did. You'll see in other reviews as well that not only Ahmadis (the author was one of the immediately followers of the founder of the Ahmadi movement) but many others consider this to be without doubt the best translation of the Qur'an into English.

All I can say is I wish the world would read and understand the Qur'an as translated here. I am not a Muslim but a long-time student of early Christianity, and I came to read this Qur'an in an effort to try to understand the increasing number of comments by many Western scholars in recent years that, of all the world's present religions, that which probably represents Jesus' actual teachings is Islam. I can now see why they say this. Islam, as embodied in this translation of the Qur'an, is nothing short of a noble, highly ethical, and peaceful religion.

In case these comments should be seen as "Christian-bashing," I should mention that not only are Ahmadis, from whose ranks Maulana Muhammad Ali came, generally not recognized as Muslims by the bulk of Muslims, but they are even outlawed and actively persecuted in some Muslim areas. And yet, even mainstream Muslims seem to agree that this is the best translation!

In our presently very troubled world, if the scholars are correct that indeed the actual teachings of Jesus are most similar to at least Qur'anic Islam, as revealed in Maulana Muhammad Ali's translation, it would appear that Jesus' teachings are equally misunderstood by a very large number of both Christians and Muslims.

You can read the Quran and see that Allah wants people of all different races to know each other and cooperate with each other. You on the other hand, with your racist and xenophobic attitude will not succeed in your plan.

Could someone help me? I tried reading the Koran...but I could not understand it? Who is the prophet talking to? Who is speaking at times?...it it Mohammed or Allah? There are terms and expressions that I do not understand AT ALL!! Where is the organization to this book? I tried to read it logically but there seems to be no order in the material translated here?
Is there a book that explains the Koran? I have never read a book so hard to follow or understand before in my life...what is trying to be said here?
I find it amazing that people are willing to kill and maim over this text...it has no clear message to mankind.

If we lived in a islamic country with Sharia Law implimented...then this Kafir Translator would be put in prison. He has NOT translated this most HOLY Book of Islam the mother of all books into proper English. He will mislead others and call error upon the heads of unbelievers. He would be punished most severely in a proper islamic society.
