The Heroin Diaries

In one of the most unique memoirs of addiction ever published, Mötley Crüe's Nikki Sixx shares mesmerizing diary entries from the year he spiraled out of control in a haze of heroin and cocaine, presented alongside riveting commentary from people who were there at the time, and from Nikki himself.

When Mötley Crüe was at the height of its fame, there wasn't any drug Nikki Sixx wouldn't do. He spent days -- sometimes alone, sometimes with other addicts, friends, and lovers -- in a coke and heroin-fueled daze. The highs were high, and Nikki's journal entries reveal some euphoria and joy. But the lows were lower, often ending with Nikki in his closet, surrounded by drug paraphernalia and wrapped in paranoid delusions.

Here, Nikki shares those diary entries -- some poetic, some scatterbrained, some bizarre -- and reflects on that time. Joining him are Tommy Lee, Vince Neil, Mick Mars, Slash, Rick Nielsen, Bob Rock, and a host of ex-managers, ex-lovers, and more.

Brutally honest, utterly riveting, and shockingly moving, The Heroin Diaries follows Nikki during the year he plunged to rock bottom -- and his courageous decision to pick himself up and start living again.

One of the best books I have ever read! I have never had a drug or alcohol problem, but I have been a Nikki Sixx and Motley Crue fan for 20 years. It really does let you know how people in that situation feel and what they are thinking. Definately a must have for anyone with someone with a drug problem in their family. I couldn't put it down and ended up reading the whole thing in one sitting everything he does is more shocking than the last. ALL HAIL NIKKI SIXX!!!

Like many others who read this book (I think), I read and enjoyed the Dirt very much. But first I have to say that I'm a bass player who is a Crue fan, so maybe I am bias.
This book reveals the life of Nikki's worst year (which ironically was also his most musically successful time) during which he literally killed himself with Heroin. This book told many things that I never know before. It is different from the Dirt that it's so depressive I can't stop reading it.

PS: This one and the Dirt get 5 stars from me but Tommyland is kinda lame really(The Dirt told Tommy's story better that Tommyland did for me).

This is the story of a man who was at the height of his career while hitting rock bottom and it's so haunting because it's all true. It's not a cookie cutter vision of being a junkie. It's rawr and naked. It doesn't matter whether you don't like Motley Crue or even know who the hell Nikki Sixx is. It will keep you wanting to read more and more. Sixx did NOT release his diary to make a quick buck, but to stop others from going down the same path as he did. If it only helped one person, it still would've made a difference.

I couldn't put the book down!!! I wished it was longer when I got the end. While reading this book I was at times discusted, shocked and yet moved. There were some parts of the book that I got a good laugh at but, there were also MANY parts that made me just want to reach out and hold the guy!!! It's amazing what drugs can do to a person's mind. The book has some great pictures of Nikki that shows you what a handsome guy he was when he didn't have his face painted up. To anyone that is a fan of Motley Crue I think you will really enjoy this book. Nikki Sixx is a very talented and creative artist and really was the glue that held it all together. I love you Nikki!!!

If you love Motley Crue and followed them all these years this book will intrigue you. Also, if you have every known or know some who is an addicit it gives some insight into their mentality. They always have some rational excuse as to why they can't stop or put the blame on others. Nikki Sixx is one lucky person to come back from the dead as many times as he did others aren't so lucky and to over come such and addiction I give him credit for owning up to his feelings and taking control of his life.

I didn't know what to expect from this book. Never been a Motley fan, however I listened to Nikki Sixx on Howard Stern and he sounded like an interesting guy. He was talking about his book on the show, so I decided to pick it up. The book blew me away. I have read tons of books about bands, rockstars, and drug abuse, however this one takes the cake. I firmly believe that nothing short of a bullet to the head could take this guy out. I have no idea how he is still living. Because the book is basically his actual diary from that time frame(with present-day comments inserted, provided by himself and those who were around him at that time), the book comes across as truer feeling than most books about rock stars. The book really gives one a realistic insight to how gripping drug addiction can be, and how easy it is to come into contact with drugs and dealers when you are one of the most successful musicians in the world. Difficult to read at times because of the subject matter, and very depressing at parts, but overall a great read. I blasted through it in about 3 days.

I have to commend Nikki Sixx for having the courage to publish this book. This is a book that gives access to a man at his most vunerable. This may not be the best piece of literary work every written. However, given the fact that the majority of the book was written as journal entries it gives a sort of real time experience into the dealings of a man lost in a sea of addiction. Good job Nikki!

I was amazed at this honest view of an addicts life. From reading the Motley Crue book I knew there was a lot of craziness going on in Nikki Sixx's life but had no clue how deep it ran. I am inspired that someone who grew up the way he did had the courage to reach out for help and become the person he is now. Nikki Sixx's journey through life has not been an easy one but he has turned acorner and made it a better life for himself and his kids.

What a ride! Anybody whose sruggled with the symptom of addiction has to be almost instantly drawn into the delimma related by Nikki Sixx in the Heroine Diaries. There is an unquestionable honesty that attatches to those of us who do,have or will face similar struggles. It is addiction in all it's facets played at maximum volume. There is,throughout the book a subtle melody of hope that is very discernable to anybody listening. A true exercise in "giving it away in order to keep it" Thanks Nikki.

Wow!!! I bought this book after hearing Life is Beautiful on the radio. I've never been into drugs and I'm extremely thankful for that. However, I've known people who've suffered with these same issues, some made it and some didn't. I had ever opportunity to try the buffet but I chose not to. I knew by the time I was a teenager that I have an excessive personality; moderation is hard for me. I'm a chain smoker and that's enough for me. Nikki Sixx has done a wonderful thing with this book, it shows others that there is and can be a light at the end of the tunnel. Addiction comes in many forms and until you recognize it you're held prisoner by your own fear. I applaud the honesty and strength it must have taken to share his personal hell with the world. A famous author said, about other famous authors, they didn't drink because they were writer's they drank because they were alcoholics. Addiction is what it is and nothing will change that. We can wish and hope that those out there who are struggling with their demons can read this memoir and find some solace. Even a wealthy rock star can fall on his face. You're not alone.
Bravo!!!

(Hide Review...)  Not a Crue Fan, but a Huge Fan of This BOOK!!!

Okay, I have to be honest and apologize at the start: I am not and have never been a fan of Motley Crue. I have seen them perform live three times as opening act for Aerosmith, and disliked their stage act more each time. Still, I find the band members somewhat intriguing.

I bought this book because of my utter fascination with the addictive personality. I have always wanted to understand how it is that some people follow this path with knowledge aforethought. And this book was a brazen, honest, frightening eye opener. I know that the book was a somewhat sanitized "diary" of a year in the life of Nikki Sixx at his addled, drug-addicted worst. Notwithstanding the clean-up, it appears to me that the content and even the tone of the diary was unchanged. I say this mostly because what is left IN the diary paints as demented and demonic a picture of drug addiiction as I have ever read (and let's face it some of the facts given are downright disgusting). So I take it at face value, and what a value that is.

I think I read this book in one sitting. Sixx's tale of degradation is one that is enlightening, maddening and pathetic all at the same time. I found it utterly riveting in its tale of drug devouring, women devouring and soul devouring activities. Sixx is not without a sense of humour even as he describes his drug-induced paranoia. But without question there was a sadness in this telling that pervades the entire book. Sadness for the loss of health, independence, trust, music (okay, I don't like it, but he clearly did). Above all, it was an honest attempt to justify a lifestyle that really defines the term "decadent." I don't think it succeeded in this last, but the effort was worthwhile because of the humanity it exposes.

Everyone should read this book. Yes Nikki Sixx survived; yes he returned to music and seems to have a family that matters to him. That he published this diary and uses the profits to support efforts to help runaway teens is laudatory. But there is so more to this tale than the redemption. Under all the hair, makeup, leather, chains and tattoos, there beats the heart of a genuinely shattered human being who has tried to share the downward spiral that got him there. And while he appears to place a lot of blame on his family and upbringing for his lack of control, he ultimately seems to accept the blame fully.

Still don't care for the music, but I almost like Nikki Sixx after reading this book. I hope that people (kids I guess) who are considering his former lifestyle get the hint.

(Hide Review...)  A fun ride back to 1987
Reviewer Permalink
The Heroin Diaries is a twisted, fun ride back in 1987 that will having you laughing and crying at the same time. Although this book is Nikki's pity party, there are some touching moments in the book that deal with his childhood and his realtionship with his mom, grandparents and siblings. The testimonies from his biological family are the best parts of the book because they give you a glimpse of the man, not the narcisstic rockstar. These beautiful moments in the book stand-out and save this tale from being the typical a boring, "woe is me" read.

This book would not be complete without Denise Matthews (aka Vanity). I am so glad she participated in this tale as she was a huge part of Nikki's path of destruction. She is portrayed as the evil pied piper, although as the reader, I think this is a bit of revisionist history on Nikki's part. He probably strung her along as much as she strung him along. Matthews' wacky, God-inspired exerpts are hilarious, thought-prokoving and just plain weird and I'm so glad they were included. Nikki & Vanity were two peas in a heroin pod.

Everytime Mick Mars and his Yoko Ono girlfriend, Emi Canyon got blasted by Nikki I was rolling! I found myself turning page after page.

I don't know if the average Joe would find this book worth going through but as a Motley fan, I was enlightened by it and am glad to hear how it "really" went down. I don't know if his writings were written back then but it doesn't matter. Its an entertaining book.

I have been a Crue fan since the 80's. I really enjoyed this book and one of the good things about it is it's a daily diary so you can put it down and pick it up whenever you want and not really lose the thrust of the book. One thing I learned is that Sixx is basically the entire brainchild of the band. He wrote the music and the lyrics. If he played all of the instruments he probably could have recorded albums by himself (not taking away from the rest of the band - I think they're great). The fact that everything is coming from his diary gives the wild and crazy stories some credibility. I've read some of other RNR biographies and I just want to know how they can remember stories from 20 years ago in such detail - especially in the state of mind they were in at the time. I can't remember what I did last week in that kind of detail.
The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is the story gets a little monotonous in the last quarter of the book and the graphics and fonts are very cool, but I found them annoying to read.
If you're a Crue fan - buy this - you won't regret it.

I am and also will be a Motley Crue fan-in an herculean way. I have always loved Nikki Sixx and yes I knew he was the lyrical prodigy of the group. Yet, when I read this book and realized while I was having my 14th surprise birthday bash complete with Nikki Sixx portrait cake-Nikki was hiding in his closet (needle in arm-shotgun in hand).

I could not put this book down. It was deviantly addictive. It was so parasitic, devouring my willpower prohibiting me from carefully walking away . Watching him unravel, yearning for what was brewing inside his infested vortex of an existence. This is the book. Kids, addicts, parents reality for all. This is REALITY puked up in your face as if it was projectile vomitted by Linda Blair herself. I'm sure his shananigans were infamous but he should also be given great nobelity for his honesty. Hey Oliver Stone get typing damn it.

The only misconception I was disappointed to read was the info on Robbin Crosby's AIDS' contraction. I loved Ratt and King will be sadly missed. AIDS is horrendous and it stole my hero-Freddie Mercury; however, with all the promiscuity, swinging, swaping and syringing-disease was mestatisizing in a realm of sexual petry dishes.. All and ALL AWESOME BOOK and NONA is upstairs staring down an angelic goddess with her halo and wings smiling-SO PROUD..

Seems that person was proud to have been already in recovery himself.
The book and or that lifestyle is nothing to as I felt that reviewer did
at least if not brag about similar problems and as if he was thrilled to
copy deadly habits! I was in a band and would never of wanted to relate
such abuse or be proud or brag as he, the reviewer, sounded to "follow the leader" so to speak! Sad book and admitted the damage but nothing to be proud of. And certainly, I would hope NiKKi Sixx would agree that he would not want his fans to live such self debasing and life threating habits. Be responsible for your decisions and concious of your choices to avoid becoming powerless over your self control. Again, I say I do not believe that was the books intention at all to hear a new musician was proud of or relating to it as maybe cool already to have been in recovery and reviewer... ( Hope you do not read again)
Rock and Roll careers certainly does not a drug addict make! That is a personal decision and a problem wide spread. Good Luck. Your review made me want to give o stars!

Much like a movie that continues to linger in the minds of the viewers for days, Heroin Diaries grips you from the first page and refuses to let go.

The diary entries in this book haunted me for days. Sixx's use of words and prose, even in the midst of depression and drug-induced paranoia, is eloquent and rivetting. As much as I detested and was horrified by the actions of the author as described in his diary entries, I found myself longing for resolution and health for him (it amazes me how this is so relative - readers will find themselves "rooting" for the person whose actions and thoughts were so vile).

I would recommend this book for those who enjoy biographical literature, although would caution younger readers for explicit and sexual content and language. Illustrations are graphic and appropriately bolster the content.

After reading this book, I also recommend the accompanying soundtrack by Sixx AM.

Great book - you live the nightmare that was Nikki's life during the heroin days of 80's Motley Crue. If you happened to read "The Dirt" then this is a must have. The books are similar in style. There are several guest writers that show up to give their version of excerpts from Nikki's crazed herion diaries. Nikki also interprets several of the excerpts so you can better understand where he was coming from today. Simply excellent and brutally honest. Drugs are portrayed as an evil in Nikki's life that it took several attempts to kick.

This book is like a warning sign to all those that are thinkin of/or have already started down the path of substance abuse.

(Hide Review...)  Motley Fooled: How Nikki Sixx ripped off Dave Navarro
Reviewer Permalink
Nikki Sixx's struggle with heroin addiction in the 80's and temporary death in '87 is well known and documented. Now the Motley Crue bass player has come out with The Heroin Diaries: A Year In The Life Of A Shattered Rock Star, a revealing memoir documenting that one fateful year during the height of Sixx's addiction, supposedly culled from his own diaries and inserted with retrospectives of those around him during this time. There's even a soundtrack of original music composed by Sixx and friends coinciding with the release. Sound familiar yet? That's because it is.

Former Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro came out with a book in the exact same format three years ago. Don't Try This At Home: A Year In The Life Of Dave Navarro documented....well, a year in the life of Dave Navarro during his peak heroin/cocaine addiction, through the pen of both Navarro and writer Neil Strauss (who witnessed most of the events documented in the book). Like Sixx's memoir of a similar title, pages from Navarro's own diary and essays are examined, and events are documented on a linear timeline with interjected retrospectives from friends, family, and Navarro himself for corroboration and perspective. The similarities don't end there. Both books share the same style artwork because they share the same designer: P.R. Brown. If that weren't enough, Navarro's solo album Trust No One was meant to serve as an accompaniment to Don't Try This At Home in 2001 before Navarro pulled the book off shelves just three weeks prior to it's release. At the time, Navarro had relapsed and felt it inappropriate to release the book considering the circumstances. Though the solo record came out as planned in the summer of 2001 and the book finally hit shelves in late 2004. By sheer coincidence, Nikki Sixx also has a solo album as an accompaniment to The Heroin Diaries. Both authors also donated a portion of their books proceeds to charities that help musicians struggling with addiction.

While The Heroin Diaries is certainly an interesting - and often frightening read; Don't Try This At Home comes across as more genuine, honest, and even artistic. Snapshot photobooth strips serve to illustrate the types of people that came in and out of Navarro's life during that time, as well as document his rapid physical and mental deterioration. Unfortunately, Sixx's memoir comes across more as a shallow opportunity to sell himself and his infamous past, yet again. Aside from the numerous songs and documentaries that covered Sixx's addiction and experience with death, that year in his life had already been documented by Sixx himself in another book: Motley Crue's 2001 rock n roll memoir, The Dirt. The journal entries Sixx had supposedly found in his attic last year that were included in The Heroin Diaries seem to be derived right out of The Dirt itself.

With all this in mind, it makes one wonder how much of the book is genuinely from 20 year old journal entries as claimed, or if it was written by Sixx and a ghostwriter more recently in an attempt to cash in on the success and format of Navarro's book. Also, considering the heavy amount of marketing and mass media promotion that went into all this, one can't help but wonder if Sixx's solo album - sorry, "soundtrack" - would garner nearly as much attention were it not attached to the book.

Don't be mistaken - addiction is a horrible disease and anyone willing to open up personal wounds for public consumption in hopes of helping others is admirable. But it seems more like Nikki Sixx is interested in helping himself by ripping off Dave Navarro and his book.

Like just about everything he's done with his career in the past decade, this seems like yet another attempt by Nikki Sixx to rely on the past for success in the present.

Good Book. Easy Read. I done this for a book report at school and the teacher asked to borrow it. I would read it again.

This book came to me in excellent condition, but after having it for a month, the pages are coming out.

However, reading the book puts the reader right there with Nikki Sixx....his troubles, his triumps. I believe it is a completely honest book about the author. If you like autobiographies not written in the first person, then this book is not for you. If you want to read this book, you will be delving into his own personal hell, but will relish in his triumps. Get ready for a ride that you, the reader, will have no control over!!!

The book the DIRT by and about Motley Crue was much much better. Here we have a visually overcrowded memoir by Nikki Six that lacks a clear storyline and does only cover a small part of his career. It simply does document his excessive llifestyle in a not very interesting way.

In a word, 'riveting'. It is hard to imagine someone could abuse themselves to this degree and make it out alive. Shockingly graphic, brutally honest, impossible to put down. I read this book in one day. Readers will be amazed at how lucid, and often funny, Nikki's thoughts are, even at the height of his drug and alcohol abuse. Truly incredible story.

An Amazing Book!!! Nikki Sixx bares his soul in this Diary. Nikki exposes the devastating toll that his drug and alcohol addictions take on his life and those around him. This book is filled with very graphic depictions of the life of a Rock Star who has it all and hits rock-bottom with his Heroin addiction and severe depression.

There are many reviewers who have criticized how sincere Nikki Sixx is in releasing this book and I have to wonder why they are being so hard on Nikki. Releasing this book is a very courageous move on the part of this very famous and talented man. Nikki Sixx could very well have kept all these horror stories to himself but instead he hopes that his story can hopefully help others. In his Introduction he makes it clear why he has written this book. "So why have I decided to publish these insane diaries and show the world just what a f*****-up, strung-out madman I was at the height of my success? Well, it's simple. If one person reads this book and doesn't have to go down the same road as me, it was worth sharing my personal hell with them. I'm also donating profits from this book to help runaway kids at a charity I set up called Running Wild in the Night through Covenant House.... They say to keep what you have, you have to give it away. I believe that.... If life is what you make it, I've made mine great. It took a lot of hard work and if you need to, you can do it too."

Nikki Sixx demonstrates his sincere desire to stay in recovery from his addictions; one of the surest ways to help stay on track is to reach out to others and try to help them avoid the route he took. By writing this book to help others Nikki is able to help himself stay strong and stay drug-free. As a celebrity he is able to reach out to so many people and he is using his position and influence in a positive way. It is wonderful that the profits from this book are donated to his charity Running Wild in the Night with Covenant House to help runaway kids!

This book is filled with hope and inspiration and can be useful to anyone who is going through a hard time and thinks things will never get better. I highly recommend this book and the Soundtrack of the Heroin Diaries to any Motley Crue fan! Thumbs up to Nikki Sixx for being brave enough to expose his weakness in the hopes of helping others. May Nikki Sixx continue to remain sober, drug-free and free from the burdon of depression.

This book is amazing, not just because I am a Crue fan but also as an avid reader. The way this book is done is refreshing, the diary entries and then modern day comment from Nikki and others around at that time. A whole new insight to the then and now type of writing. I loved it! He brings you into the darkness of his closet and then with modern entries bring you back into the light. This book should be read by anyone dealing with addictions and depression issues because it will give you hope.

As a recovered heroin addict myself, I found this book to be horrifyingly real. Not only did it touch upon the disgusting reality that is sticking a needle in your arm, but tt also touches on what happens to those around you. Drug abuse and addiction harms more then just yourself. I feel that this book is a beautiful yet necessary grotesque way of encouraging me and others to stay sober.

I just got this book in the mail today. As soon as I saw the box, i ripped through it and pulled out The Heroin Diaries. I'm already hooked. When I read The Dirt I was 15 and I couldn't put it down. I'm not big on reading, in fact I don't like it much at all. But there's something about the way it's written. It's real, it's raw, and it's relatable (at least it was for me). For anyone wondering what it's like to be an out-of-control addict, this is THE book. The pages flow with euphoria, paranoia, and psychosis. It grasps the desperate, helpless, hopeless feeling of hitting rock bottom, surviving the fall, and finding the will to get up again.

This is a very cool product. I expected a straight-ahead diary, but found a graphic scrapbook of sorts; very engaging. He starts out quoting one of my favorite rockers, Alice Cooper, which roped me right in. Like most diaries, it left me wanting to know more, but it's a very honest, often funny look at one year in the out-of-control life of an addict--who happened to be a rock star.

This book is a great testimonial about what its like to be under the control of a drug addiction. Through Nikki's diary entries, you see first hand how twisted a person get when they have an addiction. The entries are often shocking and keep you waiting to read more and to see what happens on the next day.

this was the most brutally honest personal account of addiction as i have ever read. as i recovering meth and heroin addict, i found it humbling and written with a pure heart. this book challenged me as a reader and addict to take myself back to my own closet of despair and to remember my life as it was, and to realize how far I have come. Nikki is really merciless to himself and effectively portays just about the ugliest picture of addiction and depression that the mind can comprehend. As I read these memoires and their respective commentaries, I felt a mixture of pain, humour, sorrow, joy and inspiration, encouragement and redemption. I actually cried and prayed after having read the final pages of this groundbreaking book of unprecedented truth. The Heroin Diaries is not for the weak minded or the squeamish. It is a priceless addition to my collection of autobiographies. A must read.

(Hide Review...)  Some Comments for the few critics of the book
Reviewer Permalink
I loved the book - it was very disturbing look into the senseless behavior of a drug addict. I am surprised by some of the negative comments that people have posted about the book. I want to counter some of them since the negative comments may sway someone from buying or reading the books.

I have been a huge Motley fan since 1983. I have seen the Crue in concert many times including the Girls x3 show in Tacoma, WA in October 1987 - which he described in the Book. I looked forward to the Tacoma/Portland entries because of his local ties to Seattle and I was told by a fan that went to the show in Portland that he passed out on stage there.

Several people have made the same criticism of the book - they say:

"I doubt he kept a diary during this time, it seems too contrived" - Since I have been a fan for a long time, I know that Nikki has kept web diaries while on tour, and he would write daily and extensively. I also know that the entries are very short at times, very repetitive, and not very flattering to him. So why would you write that intentionally. If he wanted to write something today about his addiction in the 80's he could have written much more glamorous and self-serving behavior. The Tacoma entry did not mention that they sold out a large venue near the city that he went to his first concert at (Seattle) it was all about his mother visiting.

"Sixx claims that by publishing these diaries he hopes at least one person can be helped - but Sixx actually tries to glamorize his lifestyle". I find that comment the most ridiculous. Nothing that Sixx has written is glamorous; it would be embarrassing as hell. The fact that he repeatedly tells people that he OD'd and died twice is not taken as glamorizing it - he knows he is luck to be alive and thankful for his extra days to live.

"How can Sixx keep complaining about a bad childhood, and whining about not knowing his dad or Mommy issues - that does not excuse the drug use, because many people have these issues and deal with them just fine". In the book Sixx does frequently mention abandonment issues to explain his despair. I can somewhat empathize - why does he constantly mention it? It is a diary - so it is what it is I guess. Also I assume that he is just writing about the issues in general and not going into very personal childhood experiences. One longtime friend added in the book that Nikki has told him some very detailed stories of his childhood that absolutely shocked him.

Regardless - every person responds to there upbringing differently. Why does a little girl in Harlem grow up with a prostitute and crack addict for a mother and end up with a full ride scholarship to Harvard? Why does a kid that seems to have great parents and all the advantages in life commit suicide or become a worthless contributor to society? Nikki seemed to be a very sensitive kid that whatever he went through growing up was a catalyst to what he became.

I could not put down the book - it was funny as hell some times, pathetic and shocking at other times. I cannot see how any of it was flattering to Nikki.
