The Greatest Salesman in the World

What you are today is not important... for in this  runaway bestseller you will learn how to change  your life by applying the secrets you are about to  discover in the ancient scrolls.
The Greatest Salesman in the World is a tiny book, and it is a treasure. First published in 1968, Og Mandino's classic remains an invaluable guide to a philosophy of salesmanship. Mandino's clear, simple writing style supports his purpose: to make the principles of sales known to a wide audience. A parable set in the time just prior to Christianity, The Greatest Salesman in the World weaves mythology with spirituality into a much needed message of inspiration in this culture of self-promotion. Mandino believes that to be a good salesperson, you must believe in yourself and the work you are doing. It is a simple but profound spiritual philosophy about how to succeed in the world's marketplace, easily understood and easy to take to heart. --Jodie Buller

If you read through the book and follow the path of the ten scrolls your life will become so much better. While the scrolls outline a very basic foundation from which to build success, it is the basics that so many of us seem to neglect. I know, I've been neglecting them a long time.

Reading this book gives me a reassurance in my own personal beliefs on how one should be and act in this world. They may be the 10 scrolls to help you become the greatest salesman in the world but if you take them to heart and make them a part of you no matter what you do...you may become the greatest person in the world.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is feeling a little confused about how their life is going and wondering if what they are doing is right or not. If you are finding you are getting angry too fast or frustrated too easily and basically just lashing out for no reason, read just the ten scrolls and take them to heart. Reflect on how if you followed what they are saying would this make your life that much better. I know it is working for me, perhaps it can for you too. FIVE STAR READ!

The first book I have read by Og Mandino, THE GREATEST SALESMAN IN THE WORLD, is a delightful little book on self-improvement. It is a classic, and many self-help authors will borrow the wisdom, principles, and themes in the book.

The story begins with Hafid, who overseas the largest multinational trade empire in the civilized world. He possesses scrolls that contain principles that he applied in his life to become the "greatest salesman in the world." The story is uplifting, interesting and moving and briefly shows Hafid's rise from a camel boy to the "greatest salesman in the world." The idea is that we, as Hafid, can become the "greatest salesman in the world" if we diligently, consistently, and rigorously apply the principles contained in the scrolls. You want to remind yourself of these principles, apply them until they become habits.

The principle of persistence:
"I was not delivered in this world in defeat, nor does failure course in my veins. I am not a sheep waiting to be prodded by my shephard. I am a lion and refuse to talk, to walk, to sleep with the sheep. I will hear not those who weep and complain, for their disease is contagious. Let them join the sheep. The slaughterhouse of failure is not my destiny." Moreover, "nor will I allow yesterday's success to lull me into today's complacency, for this is the great foundation of failure."

The idea we are "nature's greatest miracle," and I quote:
"Within me burns a flame which has been passed from generations uncounted and its heat is a constant irritation to my spirit to become better than I am, and I will. I will fan this flame of dissatisfaction and proclaim my uniqueness to the world." The idea is that you are unique, and you must utilize your own uniqueness to achieve success. Copying others' uniqueness can only get you so far. You, your uniqueness as a person, is an advantage you must use.

Other principles and ideas include but are not limited to controlling one's emotions, enjoying each day as if it were your last, remembering to laugh at yourself, and being a person of action.

THE GREATEST SALESMAN IN THE WORLD is a small, easy-to-read book but is vast in its simple wisdom. It is definitely worthwhile reading, especially if you are in the grind of your career, educational program, small business, and so forth and need something small, easy-to-read but also inspiring.

This is a nice short, quick read with a feel good ending. There is nothing spectacular or new about the philosophy found in the book, but it is the kind of good-heartedness that sometimes can use a little reminder.

Mandino's short, powerful story of a journey toward achieving success is a must-read for those undertaking almost any adventure. His wisdom - that one's goals should be directed not towards that multi-defined idea of success; but rather, putting one's efforts into those activities that will keep them from failing is brilliant. Highly recommended for everyone.

(Hide Review...)  This book will teach you how to succeed at anything
Reviewer Permalink
If you read this book as it was intended, you will increase your self-esteem exponentially. This book will convince you that you can't help but succeed at whatever you decide to do. It is impossible to fail. This book will install productive habits and positive programming into you through repeated affirmations. It will teach you to be positive and self-confident. On top of this, the book is only about 100 pages long! Such a small book, but such a big promise.

"The Greatest Salesman in the World"? I know you salespeople are convinced. The rest of you are thinking "I don't care about sales!! so this book is not for me." Thinking this would be making a very big mistake. I think that the title of the book is a bit misleading and people assume that it is a sales book. It is not. It is a book on how to go about your daily life to get the most out of it.

The first part of the book is a story set in ancient times about a young man and his desire to become a great salesman. He is given a box containing ten old and worn scrolls. The second part of this book is the text of these scrolls. Each "scroll" is essentially a collection of affirmations to be read twice a day for 30 days each. Reading this book as it was intended will take almost a year.

The subjects covered in the scrolls are:
1. beginning a new life each day, and not dwelling on the past
2. greeting the day with love in your heart
3. the value of persisting until you succeed
4. recognizing your life as a miracle
5. living this day as if it is your last
6. being the master of your emotions
7. laughing at the world
8. multiplying your value
9. the importance of taking action
10. acknowledging a higher power and asking for guidance

If you want to increase your confidence, increase your sense of well-being, increase your self-esteem and increase your income, you need to read this book. I am always talking about avoiding negativity and thinking thoughts that will focus you on positive things and on what you want. This book will help you to do just that. Everyone I know who has read this book agrees with me that it had a profoundly positive impact on their life.

If you persist, keep changing your approach and do not give up, you will succeed. This book will help you "keep the faith" and persist through all obstacles.

Don't let the title fool you -- this is a success book for everyone!!!! Obviously Og is Christian, as am I, and he brings out the best in us. If you're Christian, you'll love this creative Christmas story in the first 50 pages of his book. I, personally, found it filled with wisdom and very tastefully and pointedly short, which is a nice change for a person as detailed as me. The banquet of The Gr8est Salesman in the World contains 10 Scrolls -- Affirmations and the instructions on how to repeat them to up your beliefs, persistence, happiness, faith, sales, and overall success! Superbly written and -- IF WE READ & REPEAT THEM AS PRESCRIBED -- these scrolls cannot help but increase our ability to overcome our former limitations!!! Og Mandino did a phenomenal job here! Certainly NOT a one time read. Following the instructions, I've only made it through Scrolls 1 & 2 AS PRESCRIBED, but I have READ all 10 of the Scrolls.

I bought the book a 2nd time (misplaced the 1st one) and, upon finding the 1st one, which the kids had thrashed, I tore out and laminated the 10 Scrolls in order to review them more! If you struggle with being negative with yourself or want greater success, I'd suggest you get this book and FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS!!! Habits do take at least 21, if not 30, days (depends on who you ask) to create -- 30 according to Og Mandino. Don't procrastinate using each scroll 3 times daily. I still have Scroll 1 memorized. Obviously he's a success just in the number of sales of this book!!!

This easy-to-read book offers a fictional account of the "greatest salesman in the world." The purpose of telling the story is to get to the key to this salesman's success -- a set of ten ancient scrolls on which are written the secret to great sales (and a great life). Their basic message is vacuous positive thinking: Believe that you are the greatest person in the world (and by that he means that you have money, power, status, and charisma), even if that's really a lie, and you will be.

Please, please don't believe this book. I realize that hope is a good thing, but if you base your hope on groundless positive thinking then you're just setting yourself up for a fall. If you're basing your positive thinking on your own positive thinking, instead of on something trustworthy, you're just going to hit the ground even harder when you drop.

The worst part of the book is definitely its final chapter (spoilers follow). As a young salesman the book's hero gave a fine cloak to take care of the baby Jesus (I am not making this up), and at the end of the book the Apostle Paul comes to our hero to learn the secrets of positive thinking so that he can 'sell' the message of Jesus to the world. (Again, I'm not making this up.) Surely this ending will show you what happens when you listen to Mandino: You're believing something that is totally, utterly ridiculous.

It's not worth throwing your life away to have a nice feeling, I promise. Look for hope elsewhere. Learn to live in the real world, even if it doesn't seem as sexy as the world of positive thinking.

Og Mandino's message is this: Believe the fiction that things are great and they will be. Yes, we need to be able to think positively, but if that positive thinking isn't for a reason -- if that positive thinking exists only because somebody told you to think positively -- then you will wind up frustrated, hopeless, and alone. Please don't believe him.

The worst part of the book is definitely its final chapter (spoilers follow). If you didn't believe me before, please believe me now: Mandino's philosophy will have you force yourself into believing ridiculous things just so that you can feel better about yourself. It's not worth throwing your life away to have a nice feeling, I promise. Look for hope elsewhere.

I have read all of Og's books. I like "The Greatest Salesman" the best. This is a very short book with short words. It is easy to read. The story line helped me remember the morals that the author was trying to teach. The story talks about the hard work and lonely times of selling. It talks about keeping up your spirits up even when customers keep saying no and no and no. He talks about honesty and compassion for others. The story is set back in Biblical times about a camel driver who wants to improve his meager lot in life. However, every part of this story is just as appropriate today in modern times.

Og Mandino's "The Greatest Salesman in the World" is one of the all time classics of the Sales Profession (although, I think this is a book everyone should read at least once). This book goes beyond the typical sales methodology found in most sales books and drives home the principles that are at the heart of real success in the Sales Profession. This inspirational book is one that every Sales Profesional should have in their library and read at least once a year. And, if you ever doubt yourself or are ready to give up and throw in the towel, the first passage in the book is guaranteed to motivate you to keep going.

(Hide Review...)  LOOK UNDER RELIGION - AWESOME MANDINO
Reviewer Permalink
There are only so superlatives to describe the writings of Og Mandino. I have included 2 quotes below from his books. The first is similar to something I read by W. Clement Stone 35 years ago. Paraphrasing Stone, in every adversity, seek out the positive and focus your mind on that positive rather than the adversity.

I went around for months repeating in my mind, "find the best in every negative". 35 years later, I can say it still works.

Og Mandino quotes:

"Search for the seed of good in every adversity. Master that principle and you will own a precious shield that will guard you well through all the darkest valleys you must traverse. Stars may be seen from the bottom of a deep well, when they cannot be discerned from the mountaintop. So will you learn things in adversity that you would never have discovered without trouble. There is always a seed of good. Find it and prosper."

"Let your actions always speak for you, but be forever on guard against the terrible traps of false pride and conceit that can halt your progress. The next time you are tempted to boast, just place your fist in a full pail of water, and when you remove it, the hole remaining will give you a correct measure of your importance."

Incidentally, if you go to Barnes & Noble looking for any of his books, you will find them in the "Religion" section.

Not bad for an alcoholic who could not keep a job nor a wife and who contemplated suicide. Mandino's personal success is highly questionable and one has to wonder how much of his preachings did he practice. The influence of Napolean Hill and W. Clement Stone are apparent in this succint gem of a book.

Don't let the title fool you. This book is not just for salesmen, it's for everyone. The story was written in 1968. I have read this book many times. As I just started reading it again, I'm reminded of how much I've missed the wisdom held within those one hundred and eight pages. This is an easy reader; probably most sixth graders can read and comprehend the material. Simplicity does not negate wisdom. Perhaps that's one of the secret's of the book's success. Simplicity.

Og Mandino uses the story of Hafid, a young camel boy that lived in biblical times, to promote the values that he wishes to extend to the reader. These values are presented to Hafid in the form of ten scrolls who is then instructed to read each scroll three times a day for thirty days before proceeding on to the next scroll. This method is intended to help Hafid internalize the principles. Read the book straight through, then go back and study the scrolls.

I was first introduced to this book in 1989 by a friend and it has made a profound difference in my life. It's probably considered a classic by now since over 13 million copies have been sold, and there are entire seminars, that focus on this book and the ten principles. Mandino wrote 17 books during his life and was one of the most sought-after motivational speakers in the country before his death in 1996. I had the pleasure of hearing him speak in 1994 when he was 71. His legacy is the vast quantities of love and decency spawned by the reading of his books. People still pay attention.

I read it though, and then threw it away. It was a waste of my time. I am an ontrapanuer looking to sell my own product. The advice contained within "the secrect scrolls" (ha, ha) was just pure crap. Og discouraged higher education by stating that it is not neccarry to the sales man. He said to look at your potential customer like you love him/her (anybody selling anything appreciates their customers money, but come on I love my wife but to love my customer to make a sale. Why not just sell an excellent product at a fair price and satisfy both yourself and the customer. Good luck reading this and becoming the greatest salesmen. Do yourself a favor and save the five bucks you are going to spend on this book and apply it towards a marketing class at your communtity colloge.

So much wisdom is jammed into this book that even after 5 years of starting it, i'm still learning new things from it. Love Og Mandino's works.

The book is written as a story during the days of Jesus' birth
and I loved all the details that kept me wondering how Hafid
made his business so successful. The secrets are revealed and
are so basic that every person in sales needs to read it!
It was a quick book to read and easy to place in your bag when
on the go.

This is a great book. The author has chosen a written style that really relates to the salesperson in such a unique way. When you are reading the "scrolls" you almost feel privileged to get to read them. That's how captivating the beginning of the story is. Yeah it does not give you techniques on how to sell but I feel it's the foundation of sales and how to treat people. I wish the sleazy car salesmen type would read this. Maybe they would have more of a conscious about how they treat people and themselves. This book should be read over and over again for anyone in sales or any type of direct sales, or multi-level marketing business. It's a very lite version of "Think and Grow Rich."

(Hide Review...)  Excellent mentality enhancing sales book
Reviewer Permalink
I am a sales manager and I found this read to be excellent and well worth the time of anyone that must sell products, services or ideas on a daily basis. The concept he covers as, I believe, his second scroll is using love to combat all the challenges we face on a daily basis. I have, indeed, found this concept to work and that it may seem "cheesy" to some or not "macho" enough to others but that it does work.

This book is really not a book that focuses on enhancing your actual skills as a sales person or sales manager but on enhancing your mentality that you attack each day with. As many successful sales people already know success is derived directly from your mentality and attitude and that is what this book helps the reader with. It is an easy and quick read and well worth the time.
