The Going-To-Bed Book

Serious silliness for all ages. Artist Sandra Boynton is back and better than ever with completely redrawn versions of her multi-million selling board books. These whimsical and hilarious books, featuring nontraditional texts and her famous animal characters, have been printed on thick board pages, and are sure to educate and entertain children of all ages.
For a little one who is reluctant to go to bed, sometimes a silly book is just the ticket. And when it comes to silly books, Sandra Boynton is the undisputed queen. In The Going to Bed Book, an ark full of animals watches the sun go down and then prepares for bed. They take a bath ("in one big tub"), find pajamas, brush their teeth, do exercises up on deck (imagine an elephant jumping rope, a moose lifting weights, and a pig doing handstands), and finally say good night.
The moon is high. The sea is deep.
They rock
and rock
and rock
to sleep.
Boynton's inimitable animal characters have graced the pages of scads of picture books over the years. She has an extraordinary knack for knowing what appeals to small children: simple rhymes, goofy animals in goofy settings, and sweet, comforting stories. This book, along with her many other board-book titles (Moo, Baa, La La La!, But Not the Hippopotamus, and others) will surely remain a favorite. (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter

Sandra Boynton's books are the PERFECT GIFT for baby showers....they are wonderfully rhythmic to read and babies love these! I always purchase these little board books for new parents who generally get all kinds of baby clothes etc. for showers but rarely get books to start a baby libary. You just can't go wrong with any of the books by Sandra Boynton, they beg to be read aloud!

This was our first Sandra Boynton book and one of our favorites. It's usually in our stack of bedtime books and our son often wants to read it more than once. It's so fun to read. Our whole family highly recommends it!

I love the Sandra Boynton books. This one is one of my favorites along with Pajama Time, Birthday Monsters, and the Belly Button one. Kids can turn the thicker pages and they always love the drawings and rhymes.

This book is okay, but it doesn't seem to draw my 2-year-old's attention very much. The storyline is interesting to him, but I believe it's the pictures that are not too appealing to a younger child, as they're more like a drawing rather than distinct separate animals, etc. that he can clearly see.

I would buy something else :(

I love this book. I love to read it to my little boy before we go to bed. It is a nice, short, sweet little book going through the bedtime routine of a bunch of cute little animals. It rhymes and flows well. I really have nothing bad to say about any of Sandra Boynton's work. In the three years we've had it the cover has worn a lot, but the inside pages have held up really well and are in great condition.

There is something about this book that has stuck with me for years. I'm almost 30 years old, and still the words "to take a bath in one big tub with soap all over-scrub, scrub, scrub!" are as clear to me as they were when I was about five years old. This is just a wonderfully simple and fun book that I imagine most kids would want to read every single night before bedtime like I did. Clearly the benefits of storybook time with kids works! I highly recommend!

My daughter LOVES this book! She is 4 months old, and we have been reading it to her for a month now as part of the "going to bed" routine. It is simple and fun, and the rhyme includes things she can relate to - taking a bath, getting pajamas on (both of which are also part of her bedtime routine), etc. Even when she is fussy, her face lights up when we get this book out, and she quiets down for one run through. She has several other bedtime books that are very popular, but she will not sit through them. Most are too long for an infant, or have content that is not as meaningful to her.

I bought this item well before my son started appreciating books. And now that his love for books increase, he understands that he can pick own books to read before bed, this has been one of the most consistent one he picked.
Always the last one before we turned of the bed.
The word phrasing is great and catchy enough for a toddler to pick up and repeat.

This colorful board book is a real joy! The moose, elephant, bunny and cat get ready for bed together in the most entertaining way. Boynton encourages children to take there bath, put on their PJ's, brush those teeth, and exercising in a nightly ritual. This so closely matches our child's bedtime ritual that she excitedly exclaims that she has PJ's also!! If you child is shy of the scrub, scrub, scrub of the bath or the brushing of teeth then this is a fun way to get them involved with their new friends who are also getting ready for bed. Enjoy - you can't go wrong with this one.

I loved this book, it is sooo cute and soooo funny. It became a regular of our bedtime routine when my twins were toddlers. No matter what other books we read that night, this was the last one and they knew it signaled time to turn off the lights and go to sleep. We finally found it after our move and I've now started to read it to my 20-month old son, and my girls, who are now 4 years old, come in and recite it while I'm reading it to him.

Reviewer Permalink
This is a great snooze-time book, although our child prefers the Margaret Wise Brown classics (Big Red Barn, Goodnight Moon) before going to bed, this whopper-sized book makes for a great chaser. If that doesn't work, I just find an additional book. The reason I'm giving this book 4 stars is that the animals take a bath and get into pajamas before excercising and going to bed. Excercising before going to bed? Taking a bath before excercising? What are these animals thinking?

I am forever searching for bedtime books because we rotate them out at night and it is always good to find new ones. I was really excited by reading the reviews of this one as we are big fans of Boynton. It is a cute book, but I think it is too short. Perhaps my daughter just likes to have a little more time reading before going to bed but I really wish it was just a few pages longer like some of her others.

This book is utterly delightful! I bought it 3 years ago for my youngest son and it was hands down his favorite book. We read it so much that we still recite it by heart. Sandra Boynton has a way of writing books that not only delight the child, but it's infectious! (My little 1 year old daughter who is fascinated by belly buttons- also adores The Belly Button Book by the same author.) The Going To Bed Book is an absolute must for snuggly, silly bedtime routines (that actually are looked forward to!) with your little ones. It sits right next to another old favorite of ours...Goodnight Moon. =0)

Sandra Boynton is amazing! I have been reading these books to my daughter since she was born. I have yet to find a Boynton book that we both don't love. We both enjoy this title as it helped my family set up our own bedtime ritual. Melodic in phrase and pictures that really helped keep interest. My daughter just turned 4 and can recite most of these books to us with a great big smile on her face. Definitely worth making part of any little person's collection.

I brought this book home because my son liked it at the store. My husband and I read it...didn't think it was anything great, and hardly read it. When our son was 12mo. old. This became his favorite book. It is very simple. The words are simple and rhyme. Our son first started acting out the words to books when we started reading this book. He loves to "scrub, scrub, scrub" his belly on the bath page, and he show us his muscles on the exercise page. It is a great book. He is just turning 2 an still loves it. (along with all of the Sandra Boynton books).
It reads..."The sun has set not long below...so everybody goes below...to take a bath in one big tub...with soap all over, Scrub, Scrub, Scrub...they hang their towels on the wall, and find pajamas big and small...with some on top and some beneath, the brush, and brush, and brush their teeth, and when the moon is on the rise, they all go up to exercise, and down once more, but not so fast...they're on their way to bed at last...they say good night, and somebody turns off the light. The moon is high, the sea is deep, the rock, and rock, and rock to sleep."

We have the board book edition of this, and even though our 'baby' is 5, we still read it often. I just can't figure out WHY people get rid of their 'board books' once their baby is past the toddler stage. These are little treasures. I think I'll probably keep all of ours and read 'em for myself to keep me young when I'm in the nursing home! -At least the grandkids will have something fun to look at when they visit.:)

The rhyming and the illustrations in this book are great! You get to see the animals go through their nite time rituals of getting ready for bed. We enjoy reading this as well as our daughter. It's a short one and she's memorized it, so she reads it to her dolls sometimes.

My 28 month old daughter absolutely adores this book, as does her 32 year old mother! It has a remarkably calming effect on her when she's all wound up at the end of the day, and fighting sleep as children her age are wont to do. The wonderful rhythm of the words is soothing, and easy for her to understand. She has begun "reading" along with me, and it's delightful to actually witness her learning. Thank you, Sandra Boynton, for putting your remarkable talent towards such a wonderful thing as children's books!!! My big thanks go also to Boszenna Nowiki for creating inspiring series of children books titled Why Some Cats are Rascals ( Book 3). Check also The Giving Tree, Corduroy, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Why Some Cats are Rascals, Book 1, Why Some Cats are Rascals, Book 2

Rituals and patterns are so important to children. It's a great idea to get in the habit of reading a bedtime story and this one is a super choice. Each night we read this book to our son as we are completing our bedtime routine. How appropriate that the animals in this book are doing just that, completing their bedtime routine. The animals see that the sun has set, so they take a bath, find pajamas, brush their teeth, exercise, turn off their light, and rock to sleep. Each page shows Sandra Boynton's famous silly animals. The wording consists of fun rhymes and the last page, "The moon is high, the sea is deep. We rock, and rock, and rock to sleep," is perfect for snuggling up in a rocker and getting ready to drift off to sleep.
