This book picks up where Vol 2 stops. He breaks it down and teaches you those tips to enable you get those shots that you see in magazines. It's like you are being taught by a friend. It may not work for everyone but it does work for me. His books are easy and pleasant to read and understand.
Overall Volume 3 is a good book and you will learn new tricks. If you enjoyed Scott Kelby's other books you will enjoy this book. (Review Data Last Updated: 2010-04-29 08:30:43 EST)

Like the Volume 2, Volume 3 builds of the other books as opposed to being a 3rd edition. This seems to be Scott Kelby's little scheme to get people to buy three books instead of just one. Kelby continues his same tell it like it is writing/teaching style in this volume. Each page of the book covers a different topic and contains a tip to improve your photography.
My only disappointment with this book was that it seemed to repeat some of the material from the first book. Overall The Digital Photography Book, Volume 3 is a good book and you will learn several new tricks. If you enjoyed Scott Kelby's other books you will enjoy this book. I have all 3 Digital Photography books by Scott Kelby. I like his simple explainations and easy "this is how you do it" instructions. Sometimes you don't really want or need all the technical reasons for why certain settings work, just that it does. I've reread these books multiple times, picking up something new each time.

I love Scott Kelby but thisbook disappointed me. I was misled by he title. I expected a full book on camera techniques but what I got was intended for the professional photographer with lighting set-ups that are not in my range of interests.

A good follow up for Scott Kelby's previous two books. I was expecting a little more detail on lenses. But true to form Scott just tells you how to get great shots. And that's just fine. I do recommend his books for all amateur (like me) photographers.

I love this book. I do have the first two...which are great as well. Scott writes in a fashion that is more like talking to a friend than getting an analytical talk-down-to by a pro. The book is a very easy read and while some of the material may have been covered in the other two books, Scott touches on the topics again based on questions he has recieved from the other books. He does not cover the repeated material in that much detail, but reiterates the topic to satisfy those of his customer base who requested that info. I can't wait for Book 4!!

I'm a big fan of this series. It really cuts to the chase and has helped me improve my game enormously. This volume adds information; it's not just a rehash of Volumes 1 & 2. Where I found it most helpful was in cutting to the chase in setting up remote control flash units. Continuing the tips begun in Volume 2, it saved me a lot of time and did away with having to navigate the overly technical Nikon flash manual.
The intro pages to each section are getting sillier and sillier, so I just skip over those. But the real content in the ensuing pages makes the purchase very worthwhile. It's written so anyone can understand it. (Review Data Last Updated: 2010-02-15 08:24:28 EST)

It's very informitive. It Does repeat some of the same things as in his other two volumes but sometimes we need reminding. It was worth the price for me.

I have several of Kelby's books related to Photoshop, so I decided to try one of his other books. Notwithstanding his lame jokes (I would love to meet someone that really thinks he's funny. What could they be like?) and religious incantations that he always sticks in his preface, this is a fun book to read and you can pick up some info that I've never seen anywhere else. He devotes one page for each item, so you can pick it up anytime and focus on it with ease. I liked it and will probably check out his second book in this series.
So, if you want a quick read that you can pick up anytime (during football halftime)to learn some new things and confirm things you already know, this is a good choice. It's easy and fun. God bless! (Review Data Last Updated: 2010-01-13 02:24:49 EST)

I have Kelby's two earlier volumes of this book and found them to be excellent. I am and 'old hand' at photography as to 55 years and back to the time of film and wet processing. The books helped me recall many of the things I did in the past and it did so in the light of the digital medium. Kelby is a run writer and a real treasure in photography.
I recommend the highly and even purchased a second copy for my photography lady friend.....she is delighted as well. Darryl (Review Data Last Updated: 2010-01-04 01:07:03 EST)

This item was purchased as a gift and arrived in plenty of time for the holidays. Like almost all of Amazon's items it was packaged well and arrived without incident. I purchase a few books a year from Amazon and have yet to have an issue. Thank you and keep up the good work.

My brother is starting photography school in January and I thought this would be a good reference book for him. I bought because it says "Volume 3" believing it to be the most evolved edition. Instead, the first chapter tells you to jump back in the car and buy the previous volumes. It was such a disappointment when he opened it during our family Christmas party last Saturday and asked if I knew where he could buy the first two. I wanted to give him something he could use, not something he'd have to go back to the store and purchase.

This series is truly progressing. And I think Scott as a photographer (Photographer, not as a Photoshop Wizard) has also improved tremendously since the time volume 1 was written and published. Just one prime indication: in vol. 1 many pictures used to illustrate the tips are from istockphoto, rather than the author's own takes. Here in volume 3, I remember only the two pages on Underwater Photography are from istock, the rest are either by Scott himself or his assistants.
The really useful tips have increased widely from Vol 1, Vol 2, to Vol 3. The chapter on Sports Photography in this book, for example, is meatier and useable. The studio shots are also more complicated and more varied. There's even a devoted chapter for Product Photography (new chapter) Just to cite two pages of solid tips: there is one regarding experimenting on white balance, and another on getting that starry effect from sunshine. You'll feel the sincerity in the informal teaching. Imagine: there's even one recommending to shoot puddles during travelling. Well that's been a technique not straightly being said in many books on Urban Photography, but you see it indeed every now and then on portfolios of "good, creative" travel photos. The studio shots and setup are superb, the guides to getting these shots are very clear, there are even more inputs on manipulating sofboxes. The instructions are now longer, no feeling of being rushed. The accompanying website is also very useful and on a teaching mode. Other useful bits: a clear line drawn between continuous and hot-shoe flashes, a whole chapter on lenses (not afraid to take a stand and recommend what he actually uses). I also like how Scott shows what he packs for wedding, portrait, travelling shoots. One of the unintended consequence though: Scott's recommendation for gears is getting more and more EXPENSIVE. From just discussing the several sizes of softbox in volume 2, we know have strip banks, grids, ring lights, beauty dish, cubelite, triflectors,... and these are just from one chapter! I think that's the point, however. If you are serious a photographer, your expense will also increase. You have to spend to get to the next level. This is a very good book to complete the selection. But if you've started at Vol 3, best to just go back to Vol 2... then skip Volume 1. You'll feel shortchanged by Vol 1, and most tips in there are repeated in the last two volumes. I have no idea what is left to discuss for volume 4, except perhaps even more expensive gears, more serious location shoots, more complicated "recipes." One other thing: Scott should also be congratulated for the choice for the girl model. Very expressive, very versatile, very pretty. :-) I rambled too much here. But in a nutshell Im just saying, this book is easily the best in the series... so far. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-12-27 00:59:46 EST)

Narrowly directed at users of Nikon lighting systems, particularly the CLS system, the book provides a wealth of information and tips for taking excellent photos both inside and out using such Nikon lighting systems (flash). A question that perplexed this reviewer was how to override the pre-flash of the Nikon SB 900. It was effectively answered by the author; this is hard information to come by, and was not answered by the manual as far as I could determine. The SB900 manual is overall not very helpful; this book provides all the "how-to" one needs.

I purchased Scotts first book and I really like it and then got two and now three and I can say that all of them are excellent. Scott has a way of explaining photography so that you get it. Just the right things to do to get great photos.
I teach beginning photography and I use his material all the time for my students as it is so well versed. This series is a keeper. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-11-20 00:31:45 EST)

Was rather disappointed witn this book. Expected more details for someone who has been a amateur photographer for 50 years, even though I haven't had any experince of digital camera untill 3-4 years ago. I don't have much experience of computer, got my first only a year ago.

I have the first two volumes of Kelby book and I would highly recommend them to anyone who wants to take better photos. The third volume on the other-hand has a lot of repetitive information from the first two books, probably only a few chapters are new which he didnt mention in the first two books. The new information which he added are only useful if you plan to do shoots in a studio, otherwise it will be useless. Like his other books there are lots of advertisements for products which can be good or bad depending on you. I have brought some new equipments because of it(of course not the ones he recommended because they are just too expensive for me, better but expensive).

I'm a beginner in the photography field and found this book very useful. The fact that I could look into the contents of the book before purchasing was very helpful when comparing to other books.
It is written in a way that is understandable to me, even when my native language is not English. Great flow throughout and useful explanations about equipment, how to use them and many tips in how to make your shots better, all from an experienced photographer in a hands-on practical way. Scott Kelby mostly uses examples with Canon and Nikon equipment, so bear in mind if you are a beginner not familiar with the terms used with those brands. I do not own the previous volumes and had no problem getting started on the first chapter of volume 3. I'm considering to buy the previous volumes, this book is so straight to the point that leaves me wanting to learn more. The on-line access to equipment and videos is a great complement to the book. Well after having read Volumes 1 & 2 I had to purchase Volume 3. Yes...as some have said there were many things that I thought were recapped from the previous books, but so what! It gave me a review immediately in a new format instead of having to go back and sig it out of the other volumes. It is very easy reading...read it off and on in about 2 days. Again, Scott shows you a picture and then shows you what settings he used and how to capture that photo. For the money, all 3 of Scott Kelby's books are worth adding to your library as a photographer!

SCOTT KELBY DOES IT AGAIN!
Yes - you absolutely must buy this book and yes you should have them all. If you are not a "techie" person and just want to get to the nuts and bolts of taking good shots you must buy these books. Scott Kelby talks to you like he's with you on a photo shoot and tells you exactly what buttons to push and settings to use without going through a long dissertation about why you should be doing things. His light hearted, comical style will keep you having fun while you are learning the secrets of the Pros. You'll also find out that if you've been waiting to break into the Pro world, you probably can start sooner then you think. Using these books as a wonderful guide will help you to improve not only your photos, but your whole work flow. You will gain more confidence so you can feel comfortable going to the next level in your photography. I buy everything Scott Kelby. If you go to [...] you can sign up to get on-line training by some of the worlds top photography and photoshop professionals. Can't wait for the next release. This is the 3rd in a series by Kelby. He is far and away the easiest author to read, especially in the area of technical help. If you are a photographer, from amateur to pro, you will get a lot out of these books. Scott writes to you as if you are the only one he's talking to. He takes you on a shoot and tells you what to do to get any particular shot. I would like to get to meet him, if only to personally thank him for his books, tapes, etc. He is a genius in communicating his ideas. Do you get the picture?

I like Scott's first two volumes. But this one is lost in repetition, filler and useless information. I am not sure what kind of photographers' author is trying to target, typically it should be advanced photographers as it is 3rd volume. Some reviewers mentioned that it's good for beginners but I don't think so it contained some advance info and some very basic stuff and it also keep referring to 1st and 2nd volumes.
Good: If you are product photographer then you have got some information in this book. Bad: Repetition Topics: A few examples... 1. Sharpest Aperture: We already discussed this in first two books and same info is shared as topic. 2. Wake up early in the morning. 3. Most of topics in Sports are already covered. 4. As usual screen shot of B&H Photo-Video site. Ohh wait! This time it's different page not homepage. Filler: This is interesting. A few examples... 1. There is separate whole topic on how to change lens. (May be in Vol-4, Scott will cover how to properly charge/install battery) 2. How to clean lenses. 3. Shortcut for formatting memory card. 4. Resetting camera setting. Come on! These topics are covered in detail in operating manuals of every DSLR/Lens. 5. As usual too much advertising of websites and expensive gears. I was expecting real professional info/tips and going beyond volumes 1 and 2, not the same information/filler. This book is certainly not for me. If you really want to get some interesting tips, you may want to check out `Understanding Exposure:...' by Bryan Peterson. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-10-05 05:29:53 EST)

I just finished reading the 3rd book in "The Digital Photography" series and overall got some great tips from it. Being a new photographer there is some great useful information, but I am sure that some of the tips will go unused by more seasoned photographers.
The chapter on lenses was great since I was looking to add some new glass and wasn't sure what to add next. I ended up buying 2 more lenses to round out my equipment. But as good as this book is, there are some minor flaws. Some of the content is repetitive if you read books 1 and 2 as I did. If you haven't, then you miss some of the tips that are needed to get you up to speed. Overall it is a good book to add to your photography library, but I would recommend reading the 1st 2 books first or buying the 3 book set. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-10-05 05:29:53 EST)

I am not a pro photographer but certainly a newbie and love it. I've been reading stuff from Brian Peterson, Joe Mcnally and Scott.. And No one beats Scott.. He makes this art look like a childs play and that camera the most user friendly thing.. I had great expectations from this book because both the earlier volumes were awesome and I should admit, I am not let down.. I really really hope he releases the volume 4 soon. Take my word! This is a must have book.

I purchased this book having already purchased the first two. I am happy with the book. I have learned a lot about photography in the first two books and even more in this one. The only thing is that this book has occasional references to the first two books so it would be helpful to purchase those books as well as this one.

I have really learned a lot from Scott Kelby's "Digital Photography" series, as well as his Photoshop Elements 7 Book for Digital Photographers book. Great information, and I use it as a reference as well as re-read it occasionally to drive home all of the great advice. I've read the theory books before, and this series really gives you the up-to-date "How To" advice for a variety of situations -- well worth the purchase!

I have all three in this series. And, I am also a beginner. The third book is for the more serious photographer. The book is very interesting, but I don't think I will be referring to it as much as the first two books.

I passed on the first two volumes, as good as they might have been, because I considered them too basic, but figured I would give the 3rd book a chance. Well, it too is pretty darn simplistic; and I returned my copy.
Very light reading, considering this is the 3rd in the series, and many items could be learned by simply reading the manual that came with your camera; like how to power down your flash via the flash exposure comp button. How about the page devoted to carrying a back-up flash on a pro shoot. Really? I like Scott's software books, his blog, and these books may be great for the beginner but if you have at least some experience I suggest saving your money. Take a look at the books by Kirk Tuck for starters. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-09-24 12:13:47 EST)

This book picks up right where the first two left off. More excellent advice for taking many different kinds of shots. I highly recommend it.

After reading the first two books, I cannot help but feel that this one is a disappointment. Very little information was really useful for the amateur or beginning/intermediate photographer as the focus went to product and professional studio recommendations. If you are a person learning photography (or a hobbyist) you wouldn't use those chapters extensively (they mostly recommend what additional equipment to buy, which can expensive and of limited use for the non-professional) and if you are a pro, I would think you already know most of what is mentioned there. Then, the lenses chapter was very thin on information and its contents consisted mostly of knowledge that someone reading his third book would already know, given that most people would have read the other two volumes (and probably any number of magazines, blogs, etc). While the other two books are really good (especially the first one, which I would highly recommend), I wish I wouldn't have bothered with this one. It will sell, but I dare say that it would happen on the merit of the first series not on its own value.

This book is an easy read and consistent with his earlier books. I enjoyed reading it you have to like Scott's easy going style.

After reading volumes I and II, I was really looking forward to volume III. As this book was well written, and provided good advice in the typical "Kelby" fashion....I was a bit disappointed with the book. Volumes I and II are better in my opinion.
