I LOVE THIS BOOK!! It reminds me so much of my childhood. I bought it for myself, but had a wonderful time sharing it with my Nanny (my grandmother.) Although I'm pretty yound and my Nanny is pretty old, we both had fun reading through this book and remembering the things we did when we were little! This is a great book for a mother and daughter or a grandmother and granddaughter to share, and will be charrished for years and years!

I was buying the "Dangerous Book for Boys" for my husband's nephew when I saw this book. I ended up buying "The Daring Book for Girls" for me, and two copies of the boy book - one for my husband's nephew (aged 9) and one for him. I love this book so much I recommend it to everyone, and I'm buying a copy for sister for her 12th birthday next month. It has loads of fun information on real life princesses, how to power a clock with a lemon, how to tie knots, etc. Very useful and entertaining.

"The Daring Book for Girls" by Andrea J Buchanan and Miriam Peskowitz is just amazing. Girls just don't chit chat or play with dolls. Girls can perform many intelligent, creative and skillful activities like padding a canoe or changing a tire. This book was recommended by my friend. She has given it to her young daughter. This book does not ignore girly behavior like girls reading about queens or making friendship bracelets or pressing flowers. It also embodies functions like playing basketball, being a spy, and hiking. This book is multicultural as it talks about how to wear a sari (mainly women in India wear a sari), explore Africa, learning French and Spanish words. I liked how the book talks about famous historical figures who were women like Joan of Arc and their brave deeds and the women who served in war. The book appreciates a girl for her dainty qualities and need to keep her pretty, as it demonstrates how to tie up your hair with a pencil or make daisy chains. But it also requests girls to be brave and learn to defend themselves by learning yoga and karate and making their own tool kit. The topics are so diverse. They tap on the all round development of the girl. One finds activities that encourage inventiveness and creativeness like writing letters or math tricks or using impressive words; and it also talks about how to make a willow whistle, building a campfire, riding a scooter, using cart wheels and making an airplane. The book teaches girls basic activities that will help her when she grows like how to negotiate a salary or how to speak in public. I think the girl can do twice as many activities as a boy can do as she can play outdoors and do housework at home. I just find this book to be so innovative and not at all prejudiced. It's got activities that would enhance the all-round development of the girl to be sensible and independent and enjoy life. This book also explains in details and simple language the history or meaning of terms and the procedures. It motivates the girls to not give up and keep trying. I would recommend this light hearted and fun book to all girls.

This book is in great condition. The information included is wonderful.
It shows how to do many things that girls will find intersting. I purchased it for my 11 year old grand-daughter and will buy one for a younger grand-daughter in a few years when she is old enough to appreciate it. Included are games long forgotten and many"how tos". I plan to read through it and remember.

Wow! What a great book for girls. I wish this book was given to me when I was growing up. It is an excellent "how to" book for anything girl or boy, and can help when they are faced with lifes little "curve balls" as they grow up. I think The Daring Book for Girls should be must read for every girl and woman.

Yes, great people like homemakers such as Abigail Adams and a list of women inventors and scientists are mentioned in this book. I appreciate that. That helps girls do daring things that build their self worth rather than hurt it.

I think our world is heading more toward an upswing for girls where not only courage, but moral caliber is being encouraged, because its deeper purposes are becoming more and more understood. This book, as good as it is, is unfortunately laced with a number of contrary messages. So just keep your eye out for them.

This book is wonderful. I got a copy for myself and now feel obligated to get one for any family member that has a young daughter. I picked up this copy for my sister-in-law and had a great time reading some of the stuff to my niece. My sister-in-law was thrilled to receive!

Wow. I must be the only reviewer who sees this book for what it really is -- a politically correct tome that encourages girls to be like boys. Some of the recommendations, to wit: always bring duct tape, carry a Swiss army knife, use a compass, tie knots, learn karate, change a tire, etc. Come on.

This book is another leftist attempt to blur the distinction between the sexes at a young age. I'm surprised that the author didn't include military ranks (in case the girl wants to become a Marine), how to dig a trench, and rules for playing poker.

If we traditionalists take any consolation, it's that no matter how much the leftists try and push girls to become boys, it never works.

this book is trying to milk the success of the dangerous book for boys with content not quite on par with what was in that book. the book for boys had interesting and slightly obscure facts and activities one would enjoy reading about, and not just for little boys but in general for adults as well as kids, its an interesting book to flip through. the book for girls on the other hand had some activities in there that were... more widely known about, or in other words, common sense. examples can be found in the video provided above on this page... like bandana tying? tree swings? what do you need to know about those things other than the fact they exist? to need an instruction manual on how to tie a bandana or paddle a canoe is kind of sad. to compare the girls book to the boys book one would think we patronize our girls (which we do unfortunately but lets hope we grow out of that). i found most of the activities to be hands on and not so much intellectual, which is not completely bad, but the funny thing about 'active' activities is you learn them best by doing them, not so much reading about them. don't get me wrong, the fact that there are more so called 'hands on' activities in the girls book is not what makes it bad, its the fact that those activities are so juvenile and uninteresting compared to the information in the boys book. there were a few interesting things in the book, but overall not worth the time. the only way in which it is as good or maybe better than the book for boys was the recommended reading list at the back. there were a few good books and it was a more extensive list than the boys list (hint hint, go read those books instead of this one).

of course the problem with both of the books is that they attempt to make the information gender specific which just perpetuates stereotypes and closes minds, but short of writing your own book or writing letters there's not much you can do about that other than tell your child its ok to like reading the book with the name of the opposite gender on the cover.

my advice to you, buy the dangerous book for boys and give it to your daughters. or if you are really keen on getting a reference book with the word girls in the title, go with one called: Science Book for Girls and Other Intelligent Beings by Valerie Wyatt. that is a good one that will get them doing something and teaching them at the same time.

My daughter is an avid reader and seeks out challenging reads. She also craves adventure and is not really a girly girl in the traditional sense. She is the middle child with two brothers and loves riding her bike and skateboard. We had so much fun with this book. Highly recommended.

There's a disclaimer in the front stating ... " a number of activities may be dangerous if not done exactly as directed or which may be inappropriate for young childen" The chapter about sleepovers may be too much for young girls, especially the story of Bloody Mary and the game involved with that.

I really enjoyed reading this book with my daughter who is 10. It gave me a great excuse to get more quality time with her and she stayed interested. We even copied down things to refer to later.

I'm a guy and have not read this book straight through. My sister got this book for christmas and I was curious abouit and looked through it. there is some good stuff in here that will counter "this time of video games and cell phones". What to do at a slumber party, how to press flowers, what to do/how to act around boy, etc,etc, etc. i hghly recommend this book to ANY GIRL. Kids or Adullts, old or young, this has something for everyone and will encourage kids to go back to a better time where there were no computers and not everyone had a TV. i like using my computer and occasionally watching TV as well, but I don't spend my life doing that stuff. So Overall: GO FOR THIS!

This is such a wonderful book for girls! There is everything that a girl could imagine in this book. It's also a treasured keepsake that can be passed on. If you are doubting purchasing this book, doubt no more...buy it!

A really great gift for girls ages 9 - 12. Everyone at my granddaughter's 9th birthday party loved it. No one was able to flip through it without stopping to read about several subjects. It's a book she, her friends, and parents will enjoy throughout the coming years.

This is a great book for any girl of any age. It has information on playing various games, crafts, history. Its like an owners manual for girl things. Very informative and very much recommended any one would love this book. A KEEPER :)

The Truth: I'm a Girl, I'm Smart and I Know Everything As a Positive Psychologist, I'm all in favor of this book for girls. It talks, shares and teaches about so many of the subjects that girls want to know more about. For example, Double Dutch Jump Rope, How to Tie a Sari, Every Girl's Toolbox, Joan of Arc, Making a willow Whistle, and Sleep Outs, and even Boys. Here is a quote from the Boy's section: "Wherever you fall on the specturm of how you feel about boys, do treat all your friends, boys and girls, with kindness. This has gone out of fashion and that's a sad mistake."

Oh, who am I kidding, I loved this book because I am me, a woman who still has a daring girl inside of her! I want to Jump Rope (the knee-I have to be careful, though.) I want to learn how to tie a Sari and really know how to use tools and learn about famous women through the ages and have maybe not sleep outs but pajama parties with women friends once in awhile and leave the men at home. Did I say, men? Yes, let's treat them with respect! That is good advice at any age.

Whatever your age, this book will make you want to do and learn and have fun. It will infuse you with energy and your daring side will come to life. I say read it whether you are 8 or 98! I dare you!

As an adult, I felt like I was taking a trip back into my childhood days as I read favorite games and activities I enjoyed as a kid. Sometimes I found my laughing as the games brought back vivid memories and other times I found myself saying, "Oh, I remember playing that."

I think this book is a great resource for things to do with your kids.

Having spent most of my childhood up trees or in a craft cupboard creating whatever I could think of, this book came as a wonderful surprise. Even after church, I and my friends would run outside and create elaborate games that probably do not make sense but seemed so fun at the time. My best friend gave me this book for Christmas so that we could enjoy the fun. I read the introduction and fell in love. Done with endless streams of DVD's, cell phones, and instant messenger, I am ready to play as God intented.

This book embraces all that play should be. It has everything from tying knots and building campfires to making your own paper and an alarm clock powered by a lemon. A tomboy by nature, this book appeals to my mind and my creativity at the same time. It gets back to old values like imagination, doing something for a purpose and spending time with people. It embraces so many areas of life. One minute your in the kitchen the next you're backpacking in the woods and then you find yourself building a tree fort in your back yard.

I absolutely love this book and have already used it at the age of 20. Someday, I hope to pull it out and use it with my kids. This book has no age limit to its fun. I am so grateful to see todays overly technological culture combatted with the opening up of the good value in the world around us.

The Daring Book for Girls is intended as a companion to "The Dangerous Book for Boys" with it's title and similar cover design, but it has a very important difference. Since I have no sons, I relied on the opinon of some of my Catholic friends who loved that book for their sons. I was thrilled for my adventurous 10 year old to have a similar book. Isabella loves outdoor activities, sports, and tradtional music, and this book contains all this and more.
I got a preview copy to review for a possible TV appearance on the "Good Morning America" with my girls to endorse the book before it came out in October. Within five minutes of reading this attractively packaged book, I noticed the occult elements and had to decline the invitation. I couldn't speak positively about a book which may lead young women into sinful practices (fortune telling, necromancy) which are forbidden by the Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
2116 "All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan, demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to 'unveil' the future. (Deuteronomy 18:10) Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens or lots, the phenomenon of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone."

This book with all it's interesting chapters like flower pressing, making your own rip line, campfire songs, etc. mixes in harmful elements like Palm Reading p 8, evoking "Bloody Mary" p102, and Yoga on p 191. That these elements are included within a largely wholesome book is even more insidious as it implies they are harmless. I asked author Miriam Peskowitz to consider removing these elements, and haven't heard from her. She would have my most hearty endorsement if she did.

This book has taken a lot of heat for including "girly" things such as hair. It has a lot of craft projects but also a lot of information on everything from grammar to simple machines. Book that will change your life. How to be a friend (anti- mean girl syndrome makes all parents happy). My boys also enjoy this, and were gifted with Dangerous Book for Boys so neither group sees so much difference in attitude.

I got this for my just-turned-15 daughter. She loves it...not as a sit down and read from cover to cover kind of book, but one she can pick up in her spare time or on a rainy day. It's full of bits of girl-empowering info, projects, and how-tos...like how to whistle through your fingers. It's just a neat book for girls of all ages :)

I bought this for my niece for Christmas and she absolutely LOVED it! She couldn't put the book down the entire weekend we were with her. She's 10, and especially loved the practical joke part - we played one on my husband, we got him good!
It's filled with how-to advice on cool stuff for kids. One thing that I disagreed with was the cursive writing section - me nor my niece were taught this form of cursive. Also, one of the pronunciations of a French word was incorrect.
Overall, this was a great choice for a young girl.

Having given the Dangerous Boy's book to my adult nephews for Christmas, I was in hopes that the Girl's version would be equally compelling. While there are entries that do meet the challenge (women explorers, women royals and their personal missions), many of the entries are far from the good ol' bolstering for women adventurers. The five parts of a personal letter? --yawn--. How to sew a 'sit-upon' pillow? --Brownie project from the '50s. Where's the inspiration? Challenge? Excited imaginative approaches for self-realization? Support for original, challenging thinking and creativity? Save your $25 bucks. Read Ann Morrow Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart.

WONDERFUL, FUN, INFORMATIVE BOOK. GREAT TO KEEP ABOUT 5 COPIES AROUND FOR BIRTHDAY GIFTS FOR GIRLS 7-11 YEARS OLD. IT'S ALSO A BEAUTIFUL COVER THAT THE PICTURE DOESN'T DEPICT WELL ENOUGH. I WOULD THINK THAT ABOUT 90% OF YOUNG GIRLS WOULD LOVE THIS BOOK

My daughter was a Girl Scout for 10 years (and I was a leader during that time). More than anything, my daughter appreciated the crafts featured in the book and the histories of various activities. The Daring Book for Girls is not a Girl Scout publication, but it is right up their alley.)

She loved the instructions on how to put your hair up with a pencil! This is a convenient way to perform hair magic when a claw or scrunchie is nowhere to be found.

We were happy to find instructions on how to make a Sit-Upon - remember those? We made ours 10 years ago - and, even though it has been through many activities, it is still worthy of being sit-upon!

I saw an advertisement for this book and purchased it for my granddaughter in Florida. When it arrived, I perused it and found many things of interest. I used many bookmarks to have her access things I thought were timely and would be of interest to her. I shall not be seeing her before this coming April, but it is on its way to her for Valentine's Day. I shall be talking to her soon after, I am sure.

I love these books. My husband told me about them, and I just had to buy them even though we don't have children yet. I think it's wonderful that there's a book out there to encourage kids to do things other than sit inside and watch TV or play video games all day. This book has so many activities that I did when I was a little girl, and I think every little girl should do. I highly recommend this!

My granddaughters absoutely love this book (the boys love the companion book "Dangerous Book for Boys". I think it may have been their favorite Christmas present. They have read it from front to back and will refer to it over and over.

My daughter just picked up this book from the school library, and is having a great time going through all the all the different topics. It's a bit sad that some reviewers immediately tag this book as everything from "belittling" to "Satanic." Geesh. As we went through the book, she attempted to put her hair up using a pencil (a useful trick; how is that belittling?), I told her about how my friends and I always did "Light as a feather..." at every slumber party, and she told me the variation of "Bloody Mary" that she had heard at school. The variety of topics covered in this book would make a pretty well-rounded kid; a goal I hope to achieve with my own. Not every entry hits the mark, but all in all, a fun and informative read.
And crying out loud, lighten up, some of you. Do you really think that your daughter knowing how to make a daisy chain will turn her into a future Stepford Wife? Or the palm reading entry will turn her to the occult? Go through the book with your daughter, and though you may not love every entry, you will find a lot to talk about and inspire.

I ordered the book for my niece for Christmas. It arrived within plenty of time and was in perfect condition.

this book was pretty good. i brought it to see what it was about, and i have to admit, i'm 22, and even I learned something! truly recommended for all the daring girls out there, this book isn't just girly tea-parties and dollies, it's fun, adventure, and possible (minor) injuries! buy it, get it, read it, love it!

I bought both of these books based on your reviews. What terrific books! I gave The Dangerous Book for Boys to my twelve year old son for Christmas. He loves it and has dragged it on every outing since to read in the car. The books have been passed around the family and all have thoroughly related to the descriptions and approved of the presentation. I am saving The Daring Book for Girls for my daughter's birthday. The exact target age is definitely age 12. These are the things that make growing up fun and memorable for a lifetime.

This book is a mixed product. Though some may have you believe this is the most empowering thing to happen to girls since lighter fluid for their bras, others seem to think this book is of the devil and teaches girls to become witches. Others find it a feminist diatribe. Others shun the cooking and frosting sections as if such things are demeaning to women.

My suggestion? Page through the subjects before you buy it. This book feels very defensive and yes, a little feminist, as if the authors were aghast at the idea that boys might have a little fun for themselves. That being said, there are some very clever and entertaining ideas...so do some research to see if it fits your values and interests.

I have 2 Boys and 2 Girls and so we bought both "The Dangerous Book For Boys" and "The Daring Book For Girls" and my children LOVE these books! They are absolutley FANTASTIC! My only regret is that *I* didn't have these books growing up!

The book seems endearing at first - lots of fun, interesting things for girls to learn and do. However, my niece will no longer go upstairs by herself, or shower without having her mother right there, thanks to the section on conjuring up the spirit of "Bloody Mary". This terrified her, and quite honestly, I don't see why there needs to be sections on Conjuring up the spirit of Bloody Mary, Palm reading, Levitation, and Summoning spirits. As SaraBella said, it IS in fact Satanic garbage and this book DOES fail girls. There is nothing educational or fun about any of these things. It's a waste of money, a huge disappointment, and it breaks my heart to see how it has effected my precious niece. I wish it had shown me the pages full of garbage when I clicked on "Search Inside the Book" and I could have avoided the whole situation. Do yourself a favor, let your little girl read the book for boys - she'll be much better off.

Although my daughter got lots of things for Christmas, she started reading this book right in the middle of opening presents and guests. She has been trying to whistle ever since and will randomly tell us some fact she learned in the book. It is quite funny. I like the topics and think they wil serve her well as she gets older. Quite informative.

My daughter is a senior in college. I bought this for her for Christmas since she liked her brother's Dangerous Book for Boys. She commented that she wished she had this book around when she was ten to sixteen. She said it would also make an excellent book for activities with her children when she has them in the coming years. There are pratical things that everone boy or girl need to know.

bought this for my 11 yr. old niece, she's not a big reader;glad i got her a GAP card too.I found it engaging.

We like the book other than the fact that is was damaged when we received it. Unfortunatley,it has bad water damage!

The book is extremely well written. The problem is that it encourages teenagers to be too daring.

Bought it for my 15 year old daughter. She loves it. It is full of useful and useless information. Would be a great gift for graduation.

I loved the Dangerous book for Boys, because it contained all of those cool ideas that I had when I was a child. You know, all those things that are now Politically Incorrect. I was hoping that the "Daring book for Girls" would be the equivalent for girls. However, it wasn't. It seemed like the ideas in this book were all of the left over ideas that they didn't put in the Boys book. I was hoping for a plethora of feminine projects.
Disappointed.
