Where has this book been all of my teaching career? This book is such an easy read and true to its words. I didn't really think that my students would respond to the ideas in this book. Not only did they respond, they soaked it up. Never before have I had all of my students quietly engaged in meaningful reading activities. I am sharing this with my faculty. Thank you sisters!!

This book had so much information about workshop AND classroom management. It was worth the price I paid and it would have been worth double the price. Excellent for anyone who teaches children whether you are new to teaching, have many years experience, do workshop in your classroom or not.

I heard so much about this book, so I decided to purchase it. What a great resource!! I have done many of the ideas in this book individually, but not together as an organizational piece. Great book! Great examples! Great Motivator!

I am a first grade teacher and wanted to improve my literacy program by getting away from using worksheets during centers. This book offers great practical ideas including lessons and charts to use for "reading to self", "reading to someone" and "listening to reading" which I will implement in my classroom. I currently have a fairly successful Writer's Workshop and do a lot of making words activities but the book offers ideas in these areas as well. So many books just deal with concepts of literacy but this one breaks the teaching procedures into easily followed steps that I am excited about trying out with my next group of students. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to create an authentic learning atmosphere in a classroom and get away from a "packaged" curriculum so every student can work at their reading/writing level independently.

This book is a quick read with great charts and information in getting started using this approach. The daily five really streamlines the student activities/routines that are practiced during independent work as the teacher works with small groups. I plan to use this approach in my classroom next year. The best part is that it will work with any school system's standards.

WOW!!!...is all I can say. I am on my 14th day of "training." I can see a lot of pride in my students. THEY take the ownership of their learning with this fantastic program. I have found that I do, indeed, spend much less time maintaining those students that I am NOT currently working with. No "gentle reminders," "pulling cards," "deducting time from recess," etc. They are so proud of their ability to use stamina (a big word they really like to refer to)and build their mental memory.
This is my 13th year of teaching. I highly recommend using this. It is very successful with my first graders, even though others felt it wouldn't.

When I first heard of Daily 5 I thought, "Sure, another fad for classroom teachers." but what I've found is that it truly is a management system that allows me to teach. I am only part way through implementing, but it has already made a huge difference in my ability to focus on students who need help or who are ready for more. The biggest moment of truth was when my I.E.P. student who fights reading by himself every step of the way, read to himself for 15 minutes and was disappointed when it was time to stop. Well done Sisters!

This book is a must-have for teachers who do guided reading and are tired of the noisy, messy centers! I started implementing this program in Nov. and now my students are completely independent on it! I have more time to meet with my guided reading groups (I have 6 groups and I see them all EVERY DAY!) and my students aren't bothering me during group time. Plus, I know my students are actually being productive and I can already see a difference in my students' reading abilities. BUY THIS BOOK! You will not regret it!

I am a first year teacher (kindergarten and first grade) and I love this book. It fits my teaching philosophy that most of reading time should be spent reading, not doing busy seatwork. This book is particularly useful because it tells you exactly how to get your kids reading more, but it is also flexible and adaptable to your particular needs. I would definitely recommend this book to any teacher, new or veteran.

I bought this book NEW for my wife, a second grade teacher. She loves it, and started using it right away. In fact, she was so excited about it that she wouldn't let me return it for an undamaged copy. Although it was clearly new, somewhere along the line a 1/4" bite had been chomped out of the book's spine. Nothing that some heavy duty book binding tape couldn't repair, but I expect better when paying for a new book.

This book is a must have for a new teacher and this book is a must have for a veteran teacher. This book will walk you through your daily 90-120 minutes literacy block. After reading it, I requested that my fellow teachers purchase it and we do a school wide book club. ALL of us love it and find it extremely useful. This book was a great recommendation from RealWriters blog...a blog for K-12 teachers as well as professional published authors and writers.

Read and implement this! This would definately help you start you classroom off on the right pace to more independent learners without getting into the paper trap of worksheets, worksheets , worksheets! Gail's ideas to increase independence from gradual release of responsibility would help all students learn more and also permit you to teach in the smaller groups for greater differentiation.

I found the book very easy to read and quickly finished it. I love all the ideas in the book and think they could be easily implemented. Be forwarned though you to might love the ideas but also find that you can't use them all everyday due more to time constraints and required teaching methods. I will definately implement ideas from the book although I won't be able to do all of the daily 5.

Practical and accessible, this book can bring joy to the teaching of reading and writing in the classroom. The authors, obviously expert teachers themselves, have developed a plan that creates independence as well as a love for reading and writing. The methods presented here make a lot of sense and are written in step by step fashion that makes them easy to implement. Teachers using this book will bring to their classroom teaching practices that are solidly grounded in research. They can be comfortable that they are creating a basis for life-long literacy learning. The book is a real find!

The Daily Five is an easy read, which is different from most professional books about literacy. It is easy to understand and follow, even for a 2nd year teacher like me. I read 1/2 of the book the first day I recieved it, and was implementing the Daily Five within a week. It truly allows the students to take more ownership of their learning, and the 5 daily things the program has the students do every day encourage authentic learning. I don't have 1/2 as much to grade, and even my most reluctant readers are excited about reading during the daily 5! I'm excited about the changes that are happening in my classroom, and so are the students!

I purchased this book and read it within a few hours. This book is cleary written, conscise, not full of jargon, and truly written for the classroom teacher to implement effectively. I teach 1st grade and can easily transition my students into this routine. The authors offer practical advice regarding teaching of behaviors, management, assessment, and references for further reading and research. What a refreshing change from dense, heady teacher-reading! An ASSET to any professional library (literacy teacher or elementary teacher)!
