(Hide Review...)  A book for all gearheads--not just Shelby
Reviewer Permalink
This a truly remarkable book on any number of levels. The pictures, many of which I had never seen, are terrific. The book is very well laid out and touches on virtually all things Shelby. I have a couple of cars featured in the book, Viper and GT, and have lusted after others. For any Mustang guy or gal this is a "must have".

The author, Colin Comer, is a contributor to my favorite car mag--"Sports Car Market". It was in SCM that I found out about the book. Over the years, Comer has proven himself as one of the foremost Shelby experts.

I started flipping through the book late one night when I was half asleep--2 hours later I was still reading.

I have lots of coffee table car books, some of which I purge during Sping cleaning---this one is a keeper.

I bought this book because the author is a regular contributor to my favorite car mag , "Sports Car Market". I have owned 2 cars covered in the book, Viper (7 so far) and the Ford GT. I have lusted after the Cobras, but alas, have never owned one. Any Mustang fan has to make this part of his or her collection.

This is a truly remarkable book on any number of levels. The pics, the organization of the subject matter, etc are worth the price alone. I started going through it one night and 3 hours later I was still deeply engaged. It brought back a lot of memories, and included many pics I had never seen before. Having visited the Vegas Shelby facility it was interesting to learn more about that and previous Shelby operations.

As my wife will attest, our house is full of auto books and every now and then we clear some out--this one is a keeper.

(Hide Review...)  A car book for Ladies, too!

I love this book! When I first thumbed through it, I noticed the captions. They are like little mini stories of each photo.

This is a well written book that has heart, humor and honesty. I have never actually found a car book, until now, that appealed to me. Most car books are nuts and bolts, facts, and boring tech stuff. Not this one. You will love it, too. I have learned a lot while enjoying lovely photos and wonderfully told stories.

A great coffee table book, to be sure.

(Hide Review...)  A Great Shelby Book..

This book is such a great automobile enthusiast book. If you are a fan of Shelby you will love this book. There is not many books out there that have as much information as this book does. I collect many of the Mustang and Shelby books, but by far this is my most favorite. As a fellow Shelby enthusiasts I strongly recommend this book to everyone. I think Colin Comer did a great job putting this book together and look forward to much more of his work. Hope everyone enjoys it.

(Hide Review...)  The best automotive book I have ever read
Reviewer Permalink
I always take a book called "The Complete Book of..." with a grain of salt. I have never seen a book that really was complete. Until now, that is. This book is unbelievable. Either Mr. Comer has a crack team of researchers in his employment, or else the man possesses a freakish amount of knowledge about Shelby automobiles. Either way, the end result is the first "Complete Book of..." that really is the complete book on the subject.

But the stellar quality of this book doesn't end with it's completeness. Normally I'd expect a book like this to read like an entertaining encyclopedia, and I wouldn't be disappointed with that. What I got instead was an extremely well-written--gripping, even--narrative that was as much fun to read as it was to look at, if not more so. It certainly functions as the repository of information that I expected (more-so, actually, since, for once, it really was complete, as advertised), but it also tells a hellaciously good story. As a whole package, this book is absolutely astounding.

(Hide Review...)  Excellent book with a few holes

This is a book about Carroll Shelby and his cars. The author does a fantastic job writing about the Shelby legend of cars during the 1960's. There is not much about Mr. Shelby's racing world but the book focuses mostly on the 1963 to 1970's Shelby cars.

I did not know much about Mr. Shelby before reading this book and now have a greater understanding of what he went through in building his cars. But, wanting to know all I could about Mr. Shelby and having the book titled, "Shelby", I was left wondering what happened to Mr. Shelby and his car company during the period of 1970 to 1980's. This book will not give you that information. I was left with lots of questions as to how his business ventured from 1970 to the early 1980's. How did he end up in Las Vegas? These answers are not in this book.

Even though I loved reading the book and would recommend it easily, I was left at the end of the book with some disappointment. It seems the author ran out of paper to write what happened after 1970. I know Shelby Automotive is still operating in Las Vegas, but not much is said, in relative comparison with the first 2/3's of the book, about what happened after 1970. The author seems like he was rushing to get it over with.

It is a very positive and glowing report of Mr. Shelby and his cars up to 1970's. Sure there are chapters about the 1980's to present but they felt rushed and incomplete.

I really had no interest in Shelby until I visited their factory in April, 2009 while participating with the "Mustangs Across America" Caravan. Since this visit, I came across this book in an advertisement, ordered and purchased it from Amazon. I couldn't be more pleased with the information as presented which has broadened my horizon as to the Shelby and the various Mustangs and others which the Shelby Company have produced.

This is really close to being the complete story, it even covers the Dodge Shelby cars of the 1980's. It leaves out the debatable Unique Performance cars (a mess all around) and the continuation cars but has odd ball things like the Mexican Shelby's and his Toyota efforts. Probably the best picture book around on the man and his cars. If you are a life long fan of Shelby you need this.

I consider this a fairly good book in terms of inclusivness. I was in the management of Shelby American, Inc, during the period for 1997through 2002 at which time I retired, and was pleased to find that era covered, as well as subsequent.
However, I was very disapointed there was no interview with the man himself, Carroll Shelby, nor, I suppose, did the book have his input.

(Hide Review...)  A "Best Read" for those with casual to complete Shelby interest
Reviewer Permalink
This is not a "I love everything about Shelby and everything he has done" book, but rather a comprehensive look at the person and the machines he has built in his long history. Author Comer has an excellent grasp on the history as well as the importance of the various projects that Shelby has had his hands on. Very well illustrated with many photos that I have never seen before, with well done layout in a quality print job. I bought it for myself but I would think this book would make a great gift for just about anyone who has ever owned, or dreamed of owning, a Shelby automobile. For those with a more than casual interest in automobiles, it's a must read.

(Hide Review...)  Warning: This book causes sleep deprivation!
Reviewer Permalink
I can usually read automobile books in about fifteen minutes, about the same time I spent studying just one of the countless rare photographs in this incredible work. The dust jacket ought to carry a warning about sleep deprivation as I suspect many will find it impossible to put this book down as I did. Carroll Shelby is an American hero, the kind of man about which they used to make movies staring Jimmy Stewart or Gary Cooper; a one-time chicken farmer who reached the top of the automotive racing world with little more than what we used to call "American Ingenuity" (something I wish Detroit could have held on to...but I digress). Shelby has given us a treasure trove of performance cars unmatched in our history. And now there's a book that tells the story of these cars and the people behind them in delicious detail. As a fan of his first book "Million Dollar Muscle Cars" and his musings in SCM, Colin Comer's writing here is made all the more rich knowing he has driven at speed virtually all of Shelby's offerings from the Allard J2, the Shelby Cobras, the Sunbeam Tiger, the Shelby Fords, the Ford GT40, the Dodge Viper, and even the world champion Daytona Super Coupe. Add to that a gratuitous supply of photos, scores of which are candid, fly-on-the-wall vintage snapshots of Shelby and his men in the act of designing, testing, and building these legendary cars and you have a book befitting its subject. This raises the bar for car books. I've never owned a Shelby and likely never will, but after reading this book a few times I feel I know exactly what it would be like, and that's pretty damn good. Just like this book!

(Hide Review...)  Best Shelby book out there
Reviewer Permalink
This book, unlike previous efforts on the topic, tells the entire Shelby story from the early 260 Cobras to today's monster Shelby GT500s. While most books have featured a narrow band of Shelby history illustrated with vintage black and white photos, this one covers the entire spectrum with a balanced combination of old black and white photos (many not seen before) and a plethora of crisp color photos taken in more recent times. Every model, both old and new, is deliciously illustrated.

This book is complete in comprehensively documenting not only the better known Shelby efforts but all of the side trips he made as well (Sunbeam Tiger, Viper, Toyota 2000 GT, Shelby Dodges, Series 1). The author's passion and expertise permeate the book. While authoritative, the text is easy to read due to an engaging prose style. This book is a must buy for both new and established collectors of the marque as well as those with a more general interest in one of the greatest automotive success stories in America.

(Hide Review...)  Its not a book; its an encyclopedia!

It is hard to imagine how many years it took Mr. Comer to educate himself, accumulate the inventory of photographs, and then write it all down in such an entertaining manner for this book. I confess that I do not have the aptitude or stamina to even begin to accomplish a task such as this. I am very glad though that Comer did, and even more so that I can own a copy for less than the cost of a mediocre bottle of wine. This is the seminal survey of all that is Shelby - the man as viewed by each and every one of his creations. I admit to being a loyal and steadfast fan of Mr. Shelby, and in fact had my first experience with one of his creations in 1966 at the wheel of a GT350 H outrunning an Ohio State Trooper. Today, over forty years later, I own a collection of original Shelbys and learned more from Comer's book in one weekend than the last twenty years of attending Shelby meets. While impressive works like the SAAC Registry exist, I have never seen a book on Shelby like this one. It is long overdue and much welcomed. The question is not really whether you should purchase this book but instead, how many you should buy so that when your buddies steal a copy you aren't missing the best book ever written on the subject.

(Hide Review...)  Excellent book
Reviewer Permalink
I just finished reading Colin Comer's new book "Shelby" and it provides an
excellent overview of the cars that Carroll Shelby built or inspired. After
more than 45 years, there are not many car enthusiasts who do not know who
Carroll Shelby is or what a Cobra is. The car is a legend. Right behind it
are the Shelby Mustangs. But there are dozens of separate models of these
two cars that are not as well known. Colin Comer does an excellent job in
describing them and explaining where they fit in the Shelby story.

Beyond the original cars built from 1961 to 1970, there were a large number
of other cars that Shelby was involved with, either directly or indirectly.
The guy has been going practically non-stop through the 1980s, 1990s and he
is still going today. He is the Energizer Bunny of the automotive world. Not
all of these cars have come up on the enthusiast radar yet and it can all be
very confusing. This book identifies them and cuts through the confusion.
When taken as a group, they form one man's legacy.

The pictures in this book, alone, are worth the price. They are used to
answer questions and explain things that are hard for the average enthusiast
to understand. If you like Cobras and Shelbys you will love this book. If
you want to learn more about them there is no better place to go. Comer
should be congratulated for providing some order and logic to a subject
which has been all over the board.

I buy a lot of car books, and mostly just scan the photos.
Colin's book is different.
Besides the incredible period pictures, most of which I've never seen before,
his keen knowledge of Shelby's comes through in the text.
This is not someone who got an assignment to write a car book.
He loves these automobiles, and it shows.
Kudos.
Highly recommended.

(Hide Review...)  Finally a book worthy of the man and his cars!
Reviewer Permalink
My first car was a 69 Shelby Mustang GT 350 convertible and I drove it everyday from 1974 until 1984 and have been a student of Shelby and his cars ever since. Presently as an owner of three vintage Shelby Mustangs and two new Shelby Supersnakes I continue to drive and enjoy Shelby's rolling works of art and have probably read every book ever written about him including the SAAC registry cover to cover. Colin Comer's Sequel to his best selling Million Dollar Muscle car book is simply in my view the first Shelby book worthy of the man and his cars. More importantly even if your not a car person Comer's writing style is witty and irreverent making it an easy and fascinating historical read for anyone curious about a certified American icon. Carroll Shelby will be remembered as one of the two or three most significant people in automotive history and this book artfully takes you along for the ride on one of the best adventures anyone ever turned into a life.

I just got my new book by Colin Comer, and, was truly amazed at the amount of new information, and especially, never before seen pictures that the author has been able to include. Lots of books have been written about Shelby cars, but, this has got them all beat by a wide margin.
