I was really nervous about buying a used item online, but I am very happy with this book. It's in GREAT shape and I paid way less than my friends did for the same book! It also came in pretty good time and I didn't even have to go to the store. Love it.

This is a recipe book for blending essential oils to treat specific illnesses, injuries, or other problems. The book covered 10 oils in limited detail and had no information on many of the oils that are included in the recipes. I was very disappointed and got very little of value from reading this book as I wanted to learn about many different oils and their properties.

Here is a much better book and the best one that I have found to date on essential oils: Chemistry Of Essential Oils Made Simple: GOD'S LOVE MANIFEST IN MOLECULES

This is an awesome book. The remedies work great. I have not been to see a dr. for 2 years. I have used natural meds and essential oils. It has worked for me. I am not a medical professional so you have to use your own judgement.

(Hide Review...)  Great book for humans, can be deadly for pets.
Reviewer Permalink
Warning: Before I start this review, everyone who reads this book must know that her advice on pets and essential oils is wrong. Dogs and cats cannot process the chemicals in essential oils and so it is such a strong poison to them, that it can kill them. I would have given this book four stars if she hadn't included that section.

With that said, this book is a good book for essential oil beginners, of which I am one. There is a lot of preamble based on how to use them, how to recognize quality essential oils, and their uses. Users who are very familiar with essential oil usage and are looking for something without a lot of background information that contains mostly blends and suggestions might not be as happy with this book.

What I particularly like about this book, is that she lays out 10 basic oils from which many blends can be made. This is very good for those of us who don't have hundreds of dollars to spend on creating a huge kit of essential oils. As you go, you can start adding oils that you particularly like or need to the basic ten, but the basic ten are pretty affordable.

The book contains a handy quick reference near the beginning for common ailments, has chapters with blends for many health issues, children's health, women's health, men's health, perfumery, beauty, cleaning, and creating pleasant aromas for your house.

I think that most people (especially beginners) will have the best experience with this book and their blends if they are very circumspect about making sure that they are truly using therapeutic grade essential oil, and since essential oils aren't regulated, this can be difficult because there are many companies on the market that claim they sell therapeutic grade oil, but actually dilute it in a carrier base, or use a combination of ingredients that smell the same, but aren't really the true product. Thankfully, Worwood provides not only a detailed explanation of how to test for purity of product, but also provides a list of essential oil companies that she as a practitioner has found to be trustworthy.

The main drawback of this book is its section on pets. As I stated in the warning, it is critically important that you not use essential oils on pets. However, with this caveat I can recommend this is a great book for essential oil beginners.

I'm new to essential/oils aromatherapy and after a bit of online reading I decided I needed to order a book with more details and recipes. As a self teaching kinda girl, I've learned to be very selective in looking for books so that I don't end up spending a fortune on many books when I could have looked a bit further and just found one.

This book has a ton of information, is logically laid out and I think it is a good choice for a beginner because the author seems to touch on all aspects of the subject giving you a good idea of the full scope of the craft.

I'm pleased with my purchase and would recommend this title to any newbie, or someone who just wants to study for themselves and family. Two remedies that I'm using from the book have helped me immensely and well worth the price of it to me. One for dry eyes (a great relief for my computer worn eyes) and a humidifier blend for my lungs (have congestion issues)

Hope this helps!

I was excited to get this book - until I turned to the chapter on cats. The advice there flys in the face of well-documented information about feline metabolism and liver function. The veterinary sources I consulted told me following this advice could likely KILL YOUR CAT. And, that's enough to discredit the entire work. I would not recommend this book or anything else by this author.

This book opens a window for me to a whole new world. I have used a lot of the recipes it offers and they work! Now I am sooooo intrested in essential oils that I even consider it as my career now, isn't that amazing? The only down side is if you really try to use some of the recipes mentioned in this book, you almost need to get all of the oils. Sometimes, missing one or two can be very frustrating, however oils can be expired in a short time.

Reviewer Permalink
I bought this book hoping that it would have an A-to-Z on all the different oils. Say if I have black pepper oil, what are all the different ways of using it. This information is not available in the book.

The book contains a lot of recipes of different mixes of oils for various conditions. So the book would be somewhat useful if I have a condition and want to mix some oils together. Most recipes contains around four oils so you probably need to buy a lot of oils. One mix for sand flies, another for burns, another to be more concentrated, another for ... You don't get any alternatives to the mixes suggested. Surely there must be substitues. Quickly you'll have 40 oils in your cabinet. With the huge amount of recipes and conditions, I would say this book is squarely targetted to professional aroma people.

However, the book has sections on scenting your house, scenting for holidays, oils for coooking, cosmetics, which are more useful for the general reader like myself.

Normally I like lots of information, but the lack of an A-Z of the oils as a compliment makes the book very disorganized. That's why I give it only three stars.

I have several books on essential oils for medicinal purposes and I must say that I liked this author's approach and easy to understand dosing compared to so many others. She reminds the reader of the DOs and DONT'S when it comes to oils, which can quite literally burn a person or even worse, a child. While there aren't too many advanced mixings, I think its a MUST for every household. You needn't be "earthy and granola" to appreciate and use essential oils; more and more MD's are prescribing their uses, along with going back to steamings, chicken soup and the likes. Of the many, many books I've read on essential oils, I think this is a great one to most certainly start with but also stay with.

I wanted to start my own home business by creating a line of natural facial care products, but I needed a reference guide for all of the essential oils. I wanted to know how they could be used therapeutically, as well as for aromatherapy purposes. I did quite a bit of research into the various books available and read all the reviews before I made my purchase. Five years later I am thrilled to report that I use this book as a reference guide QUITE frequently, and her knowledge has always proven right on the money. As a freelance writer, I have even had opportunity to use this book as a reference when writing articles on natural home remedies. I recommend this book to anyone without hesitation. Thank you for writing such a fantastic reference guide; it's been one of my best investments to date!

I LOVE essential oils. I started using them after I went into the health food store with a headache I couldn't shake and came out feeling great. I talked with the owner and she told me the names of the essential oils she was using in the store that day and I bought both. I now have probably thirty or more and I have a plastic chart that tells me what each of the oils will do. My little chart is better and easier to read than this book. The index is horrible. I wanted to know about the oils and this book does not do that. Go inside the book, click on the index, and see how many names of oils are there. I tried her remdies for several things---didn't work.

I read the low reviews on this book but I did not listen to them because there were so many great reviews. Now I am back looking for a book on the oils, not on her thoughts. She even goes into the morality of having oils that your employer might use in the air system to get you to behave a certain way. I HATED that---I just want to know about the oils, what they do, what combines well with what---and let me decide how I want to use them. If you want information on oils, this is not the book.

This is a good reference book for the physical aspects of aromatherapy. However all positives stop there. She does not explain the oils and their function or contradictions. There is nothing about the effects of the oils on emotions or moods. The recipes include too many oils as I was taught the more simple the recipe the more effective, I.E no more than three E.O's, this book has recipes that have over 6 different oils, and she fails to explain why the oils in the recipe work. Not one mention of Rosewood or Ylang ylang. I disagree with the selection of oils. Over all I was disappointed with this book. It's a good book for a home remedy kit. Not a good book for an Aromatherapist.

The reason I gave this book a 4 instead of a 5 was that it covered many remedies and concerns in depth using a few select oils. Handy charts in the back were a plus. But it is not comprehensive in that it went in depth into only a few select oils. Many are not even mentioned. Perhaps the book would be several times more thick if it did this? So, overall, it's a good refernce.

As an aromatherapist, I have many titles in my library of reference material. This book is one of the few that is unique. It is a great book for someone just starting to delve into aromatherapy, but it goes farther than that. You will find yourself going back to this book over and over and over again as you develop and hone your skills. I have been using essential oils for almost a decade, and I picked it up just the other day to look something up. When I grabbed it this week, it hit me just how good a book this really is. I decided I had to review it here so others could benefit from reading it as well. I hope this helps someone :)

Reviewer Permalink
This has a lot of interesting explanations on how the oils mix, about synergistic blends. It is a great overview of aromatherapy.

However, I find the book to be a little bit too preachy. When the author wrote this book, did she consider the audience? Every other sentence explains about the toxicity and the poisons of our every day products. It's a bit much. One doesn't need to convert the choir. They are already converted, at least part way. One can do without such overt preachiness.

My second criticism is that the book is designed for a beginner. As a beginner, it seems to me that the recipes should be a little more basic. While in the beginning, she discusses the 10 essential oils that everyone should have in their basic care arsenal, the other recipes often go far beyond those 10. As a beginner, I have yet to acquire all of these costly oils, and then some. It would be helpful to have recipes that didn't contain 6-10 different oils. An example would be: these two oils is a basic recipe for this, and if you really want to go further, add these as well. (There are a number of recipes like that, but they are far and few.) Also, it would be nice to know why one essential oil was chosen over another for a certain mixture. Is it for anti-inflammatory reasons? For general antiseptic? Anti fungal? One has to do a lot of guessing. This is supposed to be a beginners book, after all.

It explains everything there is to know. For example, what is safe to use in the home, around children and pets. Its also explains what the scents are, which I plan to use to making greater Gel Candles. Most Important, what not to use cause it can be dangerous to your health. I really recommend this book.

The information and rememdies in this book are good but I found very important information on toxicity of oils to be lacking. In short, I tried a remedy for bunions by following the instructions given in the book, but I started feeling very strange and it wasn't until I read another reference book on essential oils that I found tagetes oil is listed on the toxic oil list. The warning is to use it only very diluted (which her recipe was NOT)and for only two weeks. There are some other oils in her recipes that are photoxic for the skin but there is no mention of this in her book. It's of vital importance that the consumer know the complete information about all the oils they will be using. I would recommend buying a complete reference book of esential oils as a companion to this one.

Its exactly the same as The Fragrant Pharmacy of the same author! I had originally purchased this book based on the recommendations from the website as I was purchasing the Frangrant Pharmacy and the Fragrant Mind. I am now returning all as I find them a bit old fashioned with their choise of ingredients. I believe there is more to the world of aromatherapy than Lavender, Teatree, Peppermint, Chamomile, Eucalyptus, Geranium, Rosemary, Thyme, Lemon and Clove. If anything they are my bottom 10 in essential oils! I absolutely hate Lavender (reminds me of stale nanas!) and it features in pretty much most of the recipes. For a more contemporary flavour, try Judy Chapman's books. Thank you to Amazon.com though a quick and efficient delivery once again!

A good book to help you understand essential oils and aromatherapy. I have used much of the advice the book gives to keep chemicals out of my environment.

The book I turn to for just about everything! This is an especially great jumping off point for those just starting to investigate aromatherapy. Very informative without being condescending nor hoity-toity.
